I was surprised to see this on the AOL mainpage this morning. Less suprised just now to find they have also taken it down. There is still a link further down the page, but following it I got a message saying "operation aborted"! (So add that to Petes list!)

Gee, he's upset that he would have to make stuff up to finish? Now he has a whole show dedicated to making stuff up.

I'm gonna say he had a falafel-related malfunction that day which must have chapped his ass but good.

Have you tried the newest Firefox, version 3.0? It's actually supposed to be much better and less CPU intensive, plus it has some nifty new features.
  • RenoAnne · 1 year ago
Awww. He's so young. This must be before he was threatening to rape young staffers with baked goods.

P.S. What moronic media company bought ad space for Gampy McCain on this site? LOL.

How bitter and angry the right wing gas bags seem. The couldn't be the two faced phonies most people claim they are, could they? After all they are only doing their circus acts because they love us all. And yes,as a long time Firefox user I am finding it more bloated and prone to lock ups that ever before. I have even gone back to Internet Explorer, but just can't stay with it. I am still using XP.
  • castellan · 1 year ago
John, I'll second the comments for Firefox 3.0. It's not quite ready for prime-time yet, but it's slimmer, less of a resource hog, and much faster.

On a side note, are you installing a lot of extensions into Firefox? Many of those third-party plugins aren't particularly well-designed when it comes to system resources, and it can cause all kinds of pain. Check your list of addons and see if there are any that you can remove. You might notice a speed increase.

Aren't you using a Mac now? If you aren't using Safari 3, you really should give it a shot. I've found that it's the best version of Safari yet, and it really gives Firefox a run for its money (though Firefox is still better on a Windows machine).
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
    John,

Make sure you clean up/delete your downloaded files in Firefox in the tools menu. It caches everything you download through its browser for quick access, which slows the application down considerably.

you know, a guy like O'Reilly must get his ass kicked on a routine basis.
must be why he wears so much make-up on teevee...
  • SteamingPile · 1 year ago
What a cheesy rug that guy has on his head. It looks like somebody's cat curled up there and took a nap.

Oh yeah, and Firefox does indeed suck. Less than IE, but something's going on.

Funny you should mention Firefox. About a month ago I moved over full time to Safari, with more than a little disappointment. But I couldn't take all the problems anymore. Safari doesn't do all the things I liked about Firefox, but it works.

Looks like someone rubbed O'Liely the wrong way with the loofah!

It is pretty unbelievable the people like him, Limpballs & Mann Coulter are employed! Amazing!
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
OT but delish...Good ole Bob Barr is running as a Libertarian which should help fuck up McCain pretty good this year. Looks like only wingnuts will vote McCain anyway and they will ADORE a Barr instead...he's much kookier to the right than McStain. So the GOP might just get Naderized!
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
A new angle on the Obama is a Muslim smear. Since the pastor Wright controversy, most people know Obama is a Christian, so now slime balls are claiming Obama "was a Muslim" then converted. Daniel Pipes launched this new smear over at the National Review last week. America is not West Virginia, and most Americans have said his religion is of none of our concern.

Firefox has always had notorious problems with "memory leak". You can tweak the software to make it perform better:

Re: Firefox. Mac user here. I've always preferred it and have avoided using Safari. But over the past 2 weeks, Firefox has been like a hog, scrolling stutters, page loading is slow... And all this after I upgraded to the fastest service my ISP has to offer.

I actually did a shocking thing, and decided to open up Safari (as much as I don't dig the feel of it as well as hate the fact that unlike Firefox, it's mini-search window in the upper right hand corner is limited to Google, and doesn't allow the addition of search engines for, say, Wikipedia, IMdb, YouTube, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Food Television, Amazon.com etc.

That said, Safari now seems surprisingly faster. Or is it just that Firefox has now suddenly become a a slow drag? Gawd, I hope not. Although I'm a loyal hard core longtime Mac user, I really don't wanna switch to Safari.

FF + Flash seems to be where a lot of the issues are, at least in my experience. The FF 3 beta 5 occasionally freaks out - but that's to be expected, I suppose, in a beta :)
  • fredndallas · 1 year ago
I'm a heavy user of Firefox (2.0) with many windows. Got sick of the memory hogging poor performance and spent a day researching solutions. Did a number of things, but the biggest impact came from installing Flashblock from http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ It has made an enormous positive difference. Apparently as more and more sites have all kinds of flash windows running, Firefox turns to sludge. Flashblock solved it for me.

Great to see O'Reilly being further exposed. That he has the following he does is stunning. Some people are in astounding denial.

What amused me was that he blew up because he didn't understand the phrase "playing us out" on the autocue, like he had never worked in television, or watched any, before that day.
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
That was wonderfully funny. Who acts like that?? I bet he's still just as fun to work around today.

He sure did have a gorgeous lump of hair back then.

    to Joshau Norton and acknight...

i took Joshau Norton's advice to "tweak" Firefox's "memory leak" (http://www.thinktechno.com/2008/02/17/how-to-fi... it really helped (with Firefox 2), so thanks.

On top of that, i decided to (just this one time only) download Firefox 3 Beta and what an amazing difference... not only with speed, but with the smoothness of scrolling and a lot of other cool goodies, such as resizing either just the font size in a webpage, or resizing every single thing proportionally on a webpage, and, i'm sure, more, as i continue to test the Beta version -- so thanks acknight.

FWIW i never download any "beta" version of any software, but my reluctance to start/go back to using Safari is too great to simply give up trying to see whether there was a way to either improve (with available easy fixes, see below from Joshau Norton and rileypb) and/or check out what Mozilla had in store for Firefox users with their Beta Version 3 of Firefox.

As a result, I definitely won't be switching to Safari.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
I tried the beta and it totally choked, froze up,right from the git-go. Got rid of it fast :-)
