AMERICAblog: "Outrageous breach of security and privacy" at State Department as Obama's passport file accessed

  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
    lets see..

this was done before by Bush I.

this was done (the first time) right after Iowa.

this was done 3 seperate times and neither Obama or anyone else was notified (not even Condi)

whoever read these files knew it was illegal to do so, and was fired immediately (in other words they cant be compelled to talk to the inspector general in an investigation).

are all these facts coincidences? not on your life.
  • Sanders · 1 year ago
No offense, but in my opinion you are wrong. Hillary is behind this. She has been nothing short of egomaniacal in seeking the Presidency and I wouldn't put it past her to breach security like this. We need to support media outlets like Matt Drudge and Michelle Malkin who at least have the guts to challenge the Billary dynasty and report the truth about her desperate bitchery and dirty tricks. STOP HILLERY NOW!!
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
How can Hillary be behind this at State? Come on...I don't like Hillary much either, but there's no conspiracy here.
  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
read above. the person running the place this happened was made an ambassador by Bill Clinton.
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
    hmm.
  • Sanders · 1 year ago
Mr. McCormack said the officials did not appear to be seeking information on behalf of any political candidate or party.

    From Matt Drudge:

"As far as we can tell, in each of the three cases, it was imprudent curiosity," Mr. McCormack told The Washington Times.

Give me a break! What other reason would they have to illegallly access the information than to scandalize Barack? I guarantee Hillary and her minions are behind this. I encourage everyone to keep checking back with Drudge as he seems to be on top of the story. God help us if Shillary get away with another security breach. We need to keep tabs on that "monster" and at least Drudge is willing to buck the MSM and report the truth about Billary.
  • LawMichigander · 1 year ago
Probably some government worker snooping just like the hospital workers that are routinely fired for looking into Ms. Spears and others files.
  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
Olbermann just reported that the head of the place where these breaches took place was made an ambassador to paraguay by.. wait for it.. Bill Clinton.

sounds like the Clintons called in a favor.
  • GrantinHouston · 1 year ago
Karl Rove has nothing on the Clintons. That Machiavellian couple will say, do anything to grab power....the end justifies the means. Maybe if the Clintons were really behind these "non political" contractors, it could be the reason that Condi Rice was kept out of the loop and it was kept hush-hush at the lowest levels.
  • MimsyBorogove · 1 year ago
Yes! If that damn Red Queen didn't control all the deck, everything would be better!

Wait!?!?! All the cards turn to dust when Alice wakes from her dream. Hmmm. Perhaps there are simply stupid bungling low-level snoopy humans? Putting their noses where they don't belong?

Noooo! That would wreck everything! No bank clerk has EVER LOOKED AT MY BANK ACCOUNT! EVER! I am sure of that. I can blame everything on the Red Queen!
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
OMG. That's what it sounds like.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    I love Keith Olbermann!
  • AngelaChanning · 1 year ago
Why did these supposedly low level contractors have access to the records anyway? It is standard operating procedure at banks, investment houses, etc, that VIP account data is locked down to only a few individuals. According to reports on MSNBC, the contractors received a pop up warning message about the privacy of the data, but then they were allowed access. That is absurd -- lock down the data and then record the attempts to access it---then investigate why people are making attempts -- not when breaches actually occur.

So taking out the "move along, nothing to see here" approach, and why this was not investigated or escalated properly, their whole data security structure is FUBAR. The Inspector General does not have jurisdiction over fired contractors. They really screwed the pooch. This is really a kettle of fish. I am trying to think of a third cliche, but I am pooped. Thank you for listening.

It sounds like this was just a couple of curious people doing something stupid (and illegal.) We should be careful about jumping all over this too hastily- for all we know it's a couple of overzealous Obama supporters a little too obsessed with him. Of course if it is dirty tricks, such action needs to be revealed and appropriately handled. Still, even if it is, these are amateurs. I seriously doubt that if anyone at the top wanted to look at such information they'd get caught by their own people doing so.
  • AngelaChanning · 1 year ago
Of course, many times in history, the cover up is much worse than the actual crime/incident. On one hand I am not surprised that Eric MacCormack at the State Dept was notified by a reporter but on the other hand I am. The problem is now that this has exploded the chances for an impartial investigation are much less. I would imagine the file peekers have lawyered up by now. I would also imagine that President Bush is still asleep and might find out in a couple of days. LOL. Thank you for listening.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
Gee it wasn't Drudge, but the Wahington Times that got the story. Not what I've heard all night here. Maybe we should all join forces with the Moonies.

Keith Olberman had just said that one person in charge had been made ambassador by the Clinton adm. or some office like that, anyway, there is a Clinton lead here as you can see. The old saying goes "give them enough rope and they will hang themslelves" hope it is true this time.
  • GrantinHouston · 1 year ago
The woman in charge of that passport office was Laura Hardy, a BILL CLINTON appointee to the embassy in Paraguay during his administration.
  • GrantinHouston · 1 year ago
Correction. Her name is Maura Harty. She was appointed by Bill Clinton as Ambassador to Paraguay in 1997 to 1999. Until February, she was United States Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Consular Affairs and was overseer of the passport office.

TPM said the first was the day after NH. The second on the day of Texas debate and the third the day the Wright story broke.
One good thing. Tomorrow Hillary is have a major economic speech on bail outs as a Hail mary pass to deny Obama the nomination. However, it will get little play as the Passport Affair will be the major story in the news all day. The news will be preoccupied by who and why and breaking news reports.

The legal way to obtain for a third party to obtain Passport records.

    From the State Department Website
    Obtain Copies of Passport Records

    Third-Party Requests
Third party requests must include one of the following:
Notarized consent from the owner of the passport records,
    Proof of guardianship,
    Death certificate, or
Court order signed by a judge of competent jurisdiction requesting the Department of State to release passport records.
The only exception to this requirement is when the owner of the passport records was born 100 years or more ago. Your third party request does not have to be notarized but should include the information described in the section above that covers requesting your own record and a $60.00 search fee for each individual for whom a record search is requested. Checks or money orders should be made payable to “Department of State".

  • MichaelS · 1 year ago
Obama might have a way to score some major integrity points here. He should hold a press conference, give a short speech about privacy and how the REPUBLICANS are making such violations routine... and then-- he should voluntarily release all his records. "Here they are... all anyone had to do was ask." And he should demand, in a coordinated effort with Pelosi and Reid, an aggressive and full-scale investigation.

Let's call it what it is... WATERGATE.

(PS - John... HATE the new comments format... I'll bet you get many fewer now.)
  • Sanders · 1 year ago
It was not "Republicans" but the Clintons who are at the root of this. Admittedly they are Democrats "in name only" but we can't let the details of the story get lost in the GOP spin. Hillary most likely used security-clearance authorization to leak the Obama records and she needs to be held accountable. No matter what we need to teach the Democratic Party a lesson that they have no right to let her press on in her campaign.
  • GrantinHouston · 1 year ago
Here is a picture of Maura Harty, until recently in charge of the passport office. Folks at DU say she is from a Democratic family but she has had appointments under Ronald Reagan, and the latest by George W. Bush although some Republicans like Charles Grassley (R-IA) were against her confirmation.

    http://usinfo.state.gov/journals/itps/0207/ijpe...

She was also drafted to assist in the opening of the American Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania. In 1994. Harty served as the Managing Director of the Directorate of Overseas Citizens Services, where she created the office of Children’s Issues. The establishment of that office focused attention and resources for the first time on the tragic problem of international parental child abduction. The abduction unit of the Office of Children’s issues has since grown to a staff of seventeen full time employees. In 2001, the office was actively involved in the return of 170 children from foreign countries and also handled over 400 “prevention” cases. Harty was selected as a Deputy Executive Secretary of the Department in 1995 and subsequently served as Executive Assistant to Secretary of State Warren Christopher.

She's a Clinton appointee without Congressional oversight. Bill positioned a lot of those back in the day when he and Hillary were putting the superdelegate system in place in order to preserve their power. I will interested to see if a site such as "Raw Story" is able to penetrate the FOI restrictions and finally get the truth out about the Clinton cover-up. Matt Drudge and other journalists have attempted to unmask Hillary but have hit roadblocks. I really respect Aravosis for at least having the cajones to challenge conventional liberal attitudes and stick it to the corrupt Clintons. I really respect journalists like Andrew Sullivan for all along mistrusting Bill and Hillary and questioning their values, especially when they were trashing the White House with their San Francisco values. Good riddence to those slime.
  • GrantinHouston · 1 year ago
Gee, Sanders, you have a -19?. Seems if one doesn't kiss up to the Clintons here they get bashed with a negative rating. I went from +3 to a -4 just with my post above and all I did was state the truth that Bill Clinton appointed Ms. Harty to some high positions in his administration! This rating system sucks, gives a chance for one poster to flame on another.

  • Measured_Response · 1 year ago
20 I have noticed some have blamed Clinton already. A careful review of the evidence clearly shows the Bush administration is in charge of the Dept. in question, not Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Obama or even McCain. Let me point out some quick facts according to the link http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/ar...

    1) " an initial investigation indicated that the employees -- all of whom worked on contract -- were motivated by "imprudent curiosity."

Contract employees in my estimation are not career employees, so they would have less to lose if they had "imprudent curiosity." The reasons for those "contract employees" looking into Obama's file was clearly stated based on the Dept. " initial investigation ". Any blame to Clinton by any blogger or media pundit would be based on a biased opinion and not factual evidence. I don't think even conjecture is warranted based on the facts.

    2) From the same article: " Kennedy said that he did not know yet whether any laws were broken or whether the employees shared the information with others."
The facts again clearly show there is no evidence that those "contract employees" shared their findings with anyone. Suggestions that Clinton or anyone else other than these "contract employees" is not rooted in factual evidence once again.

    3) From the article again: " The employees were each caught because of a computer-monitoring system that is triggered when the passport account of a "high-profile person" is accessed, department spokesman Tom Casey said."

From this we know that an inquiry into a "high-profile person" will set off alarms . My conjecture is that these "contract employees" did not know about the alarms or were to curious to be concerned. I'm leaning to them not knowing, although I have no proof of that yet.

    5) From the article once more: "The system, which focuses on politicians and celebrities, was put in place in recent years, after the State Department was embroiled in a scandal involving the access of the passport records of then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton in 1992."

From this we know that this same thing happened to Bill Clinton and that's why they have put in place a trigger alarm that will alert when a passport intrusion is made. We can reasonably presume Bill Clinton was made well aware of this, as he himself was breached. It would be streaching to think Hillary Clinton would also not be aware of this trigger alarm, therefore for her to be involved is not logical in the least.
  • Mikki --SE Pennsylvania · 1 year ago
Your response is organized and logical, I see only one flaw and a very large one at that. It requires one to assume that information handed out by State Dept. functionaries at any level is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Considering the characters involved and the track record of the administration, I find that way too big a pill to swallow. Sure its probably Bushies, but it could just as easily be agents of the Bilary Campaign or indeed Insane McCain.

`I'd rather finish my tea,' said the Hatter, with an anxious look at the Queen, who was reading the list of singers.

`You may go,' said the King, and the Hatter hurriedly left the court, without even waiting to put his shoes on.

`--and just take his head off outside,' the Queen added to one of the officers: but the Hatter was out of sight before the officer could get to the door.

`Call the next witness!' said the King. The next witness was the Duchess's cook. She carried the pepper-box in her hand, and Alice guessed who it was, even before she got into the court, by the way the people near the door began sneezing all at once.

`Give your evidence,' said the King. `Shan't,' said the cook. The King looked anxiously at the White Rabbit, who said in a low voice, `Your Majesty must cross-examine this witness.'

`Well, if I must, I must,' the King said, with a melancholy air, and, after folding his arms and frowning at the cook till his eyes were nearly out of sight, he said in a deep voice, `What are tarts made of?'

    `Pepper, mostly,' said the cook.

`Treacle,' said a sleepy voice behind her.

`Collar that Dormouse,' the Queen shrieked out. `Behead that Dormouse! Turn that Dormouse out of court! Suppress him! Pinch him! Off with his whiskers!'

And off with his whiskers it shall be. We shall never see the evidence of he who let loose the file of Obama. Mad Hatter, Cook, or Bill the LIzard. Only Alice knows, and she's stoned to the bone with that mushroom the Caterpillar gave her.

    Let's get some!

A hah! Tthis is SOOO why I took my name:

Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table: she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words "EAT ME" were beautifully marked in currants. (read Obama's file</i) "Well, I'll eat it," said Alice, "and if it makes me grow larger, I can reach the key; and if it makes me grow smaller, I can creep under the door: so either way I'll get into the garden, and I don't care which happens!"

She ate a little bit, and said anxiously to herself "Which way? Which way?", holding her hand on the top of her head to feel which way it was growing; and she was quite surprised to find that she remained the same size. To be sure, this is what generally happens when one eats cake; but Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.

So she set to work, and very soon finished off the cake.

    Privacy, anyone?
