AMERICAblog: Palin thinks there's an inherent right to privacy in the US Constitution
PhilipGraham

An idiot, yes.
So this is what will happen tomorrow: Palin will avoid all specifics when possible, and concentrate instead on cultural resentment. Mockery of me is mockery of the ordinary American out there, I'm a good conservative girl, my beliefs are their beliefs, etc etc.
At this point, it'll all be about shoring up the base, by fueling resentment. It's the only play left for her.

The weird thing is that she's done quite well with the debates in Alaska. So we'll just have to see.
sukabi1
it's easier to come up with local bullshit answers, because you've grown up hearing all the locals piss and moan about everything that's wrong locally and what should be done to fix it... and being a small town girl she would have a lot more exposure to that type of thing (local pissing and moaning) than if she were to come from a more populated area simply because there aren't that many other outlets for diversion...
PhilipGraham

Remember all the initial criticism of Palin right after she was picked for VP? And yet she came out and gave a speech that worked for her.
Same speechwriters are writing more zingers for her, and she'll use those to avoid giving specific answers to specific questions.
And of course, if she's asked again, in the debate, What magazines do you read?or "What Supreme Court decision do you disagree with?, she'll be prepared.
But especially, watch out for the zingers.
sukabi1
are the debate questions given to them to take home and "study" prior to the debate? If so, it doesn't seem like a very good way to judge how prepared / knowledgeable the candidates are for the job they are interviewing for...
PhilipGraham
The zingers will be all-purpose zingers . . . after all, the idea is NOT to answer the question, but to overwhelm it with a snappy comeback.
The media loves that shit, so if she feeds 'em enough of it, all will be forgiven . . .
sukabi1

if she wants to play to the media, that's fine... it worked well for McCain at his debate... but the undecideds didn't have the same opinion, did they???

She did well because she knew the material. She grew up there, she spent her entire life there, the questions were all relevant to Alaskans and she knew the subject matter. We're talking issues that she obviously hasn't a grasp on and has never 'needed' to understand.
And of course, remember, during one debate she had colored coded note cards...

OT-
Harry Reid told reporters today if no bailout then a major insurance company, one everyone knows, would file for bankruptcy.
If this is AIG, then this should tell everyone why this bailout plan must be a no go. If it is AIG then the government is pushing another $700 billion in order to make sure it gets back the $85 billion already wasted on AIG. You can count in many more trillions to follow after the bailout chasing the prior lost money. Genius.
I would guess Allstate. It was indicated it was a household name company, that everyone would recognize. AIG is not as well known as say, Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide, Farmers, GEICO, etc. In Texas, Allstate has been having problems the last couple of years and this year started non renewing tens of thousands of policies...
sittenpretty

sukabi1

they've been doing the "not renewing" thing for years depending on among other things your credit score... or if you've had a claim -- whether or not it was your fault...
And I'm pretty sure that prior to and immediately after Katrina they had cut back insuring against flood / wind in areas prone to hurricanes...
sukabi1
I did a quick peek at the stocks and financial headlines for Allstate, it was down a bit today and is down about 8-10 bucks over the last year.... but looking and clicking through the financial headlines for them, there is another one that's probably the one that Reid was alluding to... MetLife and other insurers that deal in annuities ... they're dropped farther than Allstate and there is concern about getting the bailout done to keep their annuities flowing...

Biden is going to destroy Palin in the debate. ALL he has to do is simply answer the questions as presented and let Palin do a bad imitation of Tina Fey. Tonight, if I were Palin, I'd be drinking. Heavily. No wonder McCain's eye is getting all twitchy, he knows it's over.
ShirleyGoodnessanMercy
Yes, the debate is Biden's to lose. He needs to be polite to Palin and just give good, serious answers. No humor necessary. It's all about THE ECONOMY and showing who the SMART team is to answer those rough questions.

Obama and Biden also voted for it, so will be a wash politically. It however kind of undercuts McCain's pork-barrel spending argument, but he won't get much traction from that in any case.

I think John's point is that "privacy rights" are against conservative dogma and some of her own statements, because conservatives like her say if a right is not literally spelled out in the constitution, it doesn't exist.

I've been telling a conservative at work that he's going to have to move to Mexico after Obama wins.

I can hardly wait to hear her rambling on for 2 minutes after each question tomorrow. The more time she has, the deeper she digs. I actually am beginning to wonder if she is the Jessica Simpson of politics -- not really a dumb blonde, but plays on so everyone thinks the worst of her and then can surprise them by the lowered expectations. This is her way of relating to the "common man". I hope this is the case and that she really isn't this unprepared. I know ... its probably wishful thinking.
kcook338

I don't know if anyone's picked up on this yet, but she said she's a "Federalist" - then went into a rant about how she supports states' rights. The problem is - federalism is the exact opposite. Federalists support stronger federal government and weaker state government.
sukabi1

I think her "trainers" have tried to cram in too many of their talking points / positions and she's getting them all mixed up... she's basically repeating McCain's supposed positions and doesn't really understand what she's saying. Chances are her "trainers" haven't bothered to take the time to explain them to her...
Really, how much can you really learn AND UNDERSTAND in a couple of days of "cramming"? This really is a failure of McCain, for picking a grossly unqualified person. And a failure of his campaign staff for trying to cram in "talking points" without taking the time to explain the terminology they expect her to use.

The woman clearly in her whole life never gave a shit about anything outside of Alaska. Never got a passport in her whole life until last year so that she could visit the Alaska Guard in Kuwait.
Now all of a sudden she is McCain's running mate and has to act like a real American politician, and she plainly can't do it in the time she has. I think its a real possibility that she might not even know how many justices are on the Supreme Court.

Palin has been every bit as effective a running mate as Joe Biden has. That's because they're BOTH working for Obama, apparently. The cornerstone of every conservative argument on a wide variety of social issues for the past 40-odd years has been that the Constitution does NOT have an inherent right to privacy. This argument is DEAD WRONG, of course, but that hasn't stopped the GOP from packing our sorry excuse for a judicial system with fascist hacks.
Manda
it does not state in the constitution that there is a right to privacy, however, it falls within the penumbra of a specific constitutional protection. so yeah, to some there is a right to privacy, like plenty of those in the supreme court, and to many there is not because it doesn't say word for freakin word.
So this is what will happen tomorrow: Palin will avoid all specifics when possible, and concentrate instead on cultural resentment. Mockery of me is mockery of the ordinary American out there, I'm a good conservative girl, my beliefs are their beliefs, etc etc.
