AMERICAblog: Palin: Why is everyone talking about the economy when we should be talking about abortion!

October 12, 2008 Warning signs of an Israeli strike on Iran David Owen
Some key decision makers in Israel fear that unless they attack Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities in the next few months, while George W Bush is still president, there will not be another period when they can rely on the United States as being anywhere near as supportive in the aftermath of a unilateral attack.
In the past 40 years there have been few occasions when I have been more concerned about a specific conflict escalating to involve, economically, the whole world. We are watching a disinformation exercise involving a number of intelligence services. Reality is becoming ever harder to disentangle. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/column...

One big problem, they said, was the banks. They were slow to own up to the full scale of their losses, so the financial authorities wasted years fighting fires in individual banks instead of reforming them at one stroke. That meant that Japan’s banking system remained too weak to do its job of sustaining economic activity by borrowing and lending. Only government action eventually forced the issue.
“The Japanese told us that we will have to nationalise not just a few banks — that would be just the first step,” said Michael Fallon, the deputy chairman of the Treasury committee. “They told us that we would have to nationalise the entire banking system.” Such radical advice seemed fantastical at the beginning of last week. Few thought that the UK, home to some of the world’s largest private banks, would have to resort to such drastic measures. Yet events in financial markets were moving so fast that within days the government had to act on a previously unimaginable scale. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/...

John: just curious, if Sarah Palin is so concerned about ending abortion, then why does her husband work for a company that, according to pro-life site Cogforlife, is a supporter of Planned Parenthood? See here - http://www.cogforlife.org/ppsupporters.htm. Let's not kid ourselves - corporate donations directly lead to abortions. Sarah Palin's position on abortion is that she wants to "leave it to the states." That suggests that she thinks that the federal government doesn't have a direct impact on abortion policy. So doesn't Sarah and her family, through her husband's employment, support abortion far more than Barack Obama? I don't understand why liberal groups don't point out this inconsistency. Conservatives always say that the free market has way more of an impact than government, and this is a perfect example.

This nation is on the precipice of disaster. Studies have shown that abortions, under Clinton, dropped down to tiny numbers. Will the Republican party PLEASE step away from the Baptist white trash red states and no one will get hurt. or rather keep it up, assholes. Party on with Joe Six Pack. You are about to walk into the history pages of oblivion as a blip on American political radar. How's that Revolution worked out, Gingrich?

A candidate should be talking about all the issues. However, when the country is about to implode the main focus should be the economy. Then again, the Fascists that want McCain elected believe it was the Democrats fault because the Republicans controlled congress. Logic of a 5 year old. Maybe that's why the Fascists hate higher education.

You don't think when the economy is in a free fall it's a good time to remind the American people that the majority of them disagree with her about choice too? Where was she campaigning, Massachusetts or DC? McCain-Palin is spiraling out of control...

OK Sarah and the rest of you who hold that every life is precious. You are correct that there is more to talk about than the lousy economy that you and your fellow republicans are greatly responsible for. So let's talk about human life and how precious it is. Your specialty.
Let's talk about the reckless and endless war that Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney started with the wrong country and for the wrong reasons. This war has already taken over 4,100 American lives, and unless non-Americans don't count, scores of thousands of Iraqi lives, and many of those innocent lives at that. Just as innocent as those terminated pregnancies. Maybe more so.
Of course taking another's life is OK if it is for a just cause (or one that you want to believe is just but in your heart you know is unjust). Because this war that you and Mr. McCain insist must be won is not about honor, it is not about revenge for 9/11, this war is about OIL. You know it. Mr. McCain knows it. And the American people know it. But being Republicans means never admitting you made a mistake. So you will continue taking innocent lives, perhaps even that of your child or Mr. McCain's child. You are nothing but a hypocrite, Mrs. Palin.

Sarah's in denial of her abuse of power, but she will find an icy reality check when she comes home. We Alaskans intend to hold her accountable for her empty promises and spun delusions.
The Anchorage reporter who originally had the contract for the Sarah book (now #3 on N.Y. Times best seller list) was recently asked why she decided not to do the book: "She hadn't traveled. She couldn't name her favorite book. She doesn't struggle with any kind of the big issues of the day. She has not experienced anything like adversity. It took her five colleges to get a journalism degree. Her mother didn't know who Sarah's idols were. She also didn't know how she became the kind of born-again Christian she says she is. She couldn't remember Sarah having interest in public policy, or in reformist movements, or in anything, much, except for sports. Both Sarah and her family are obsessed with Trooper Wooten."
Any surprise why the McCain camp still keeps her sequestered some serious interviews?

Hello AKaurora: Like your name:) Are your feelings really the feelings of the majority of Alaskans? And, what do you think Palin's chances are for getting reelected as governor?
AKaurora
We'll see Nov 4! 55% of us are registered independent, but Alaska's swung Republican ever since big oil. With the FBI's 4-yr corruption investigation of Republicans here, and now this, it's been a wild ride. Sarah looked like breath of fresh air, but her amateurism is appalling. Under national scrutiny we've learned so much more about her.
Political activism is not a big thing here, but two anti-Palin rallies brought out record crowds (1200-1500) in Anchorage in Sept. and 300 in Juneau yesterday in front of the Capitol. I was born here before Statehood, and like many others felt compelled to attend our first protests ever. Whether that sentiment will carry in Fairbanks and our remote villages is yet to be seen. I think a recall petition is likely if she continues to deny accountability. The legislative session begins in January, and further action there may depend on the strength of the bipartisan coalition given it is Rep dominated. A second term--no way!
blackwolf

Wow, thanks for the information. I had no idea the FBI was actually investigating corruption there--and for four years. This information has never hit the main stream media south of Canada. No doubt, Palin was in fact a breadth of fresh air, and a great assest in shaping up the status quo. The only probem is, she seems to be morphing into the status quo. I have a lot of respect for the Alaskan people. You're a tough breed, no questions about it:)
Let's keep our fingers crossed. Thanks for sharing:)

It blew wide open in 2006. We have 3 former State legislators in federal prison now, 2 more awaiting trial, and US Sen. Ted Stevens' trial is in progress in DC. Plus various associates awaiting sentencing. It's hard to keep track. US Rep Don Young has spent $1,000,000+ of campaign funds on lawyers and he's not even under indictment yet. Ted's son Ben will get nailed too. www.ktuu.com and www.adn.com can fill you in.
blackwolf
Again, no one has an idea these things were going on. We just aren't privy to that type of information. This amazes me that Palin is focused on the past connections of Obama, and she's in the middle of such questionable poltical events.
Is there a trend of corruption with respect to your Republican politicians, or is it a trend across the board. And, do you feel that Palin and drifted into this realm of corruption?
AKaurora
Palin has no part in the FBI cases; she just doesn't know how to check her personal life at the office door. Most of the corruption is focused around connections to former oil services company VECO. All that have been charged are (R), however we have some left with integrity, hence the Troopergate probe.
US Rep Young (R) will lose for sure after 18(?) terms to Ethan Berkowitz (D). Anchorage mayor Mark Begich (D) has a 50-50 shot at upsetting Sen. Stevens (R, 40-yr longest held US Senate seat)--many are loyal to Uncle Ted despite his ongoing trial which is weaker than others. But so far, the FBI's had a perfect record. KTUU and Anchorage Daily News are national award winners for journalism excellence, so check them often. Hope this helps!

Just shows how out of touch she is with the events of the day. This is good for the Dems. Give Palin just enough room to hang herself. Consider the top Republicans who want McCain to focus on the economy--and then consider this woman is running around trying to make a woman's right to choose the main topic. It's important, without a doubt, but the issues has been addressed on both sides of the table!
This just gets better by the day.

And what does Palin plan to do on this issue exactly? Republicans have been in office for 20 of the last 28 years and they've done NOTHING. The notion that the overwhelming talk about the economy is making people forget about an issue that presidents in her own party do nothing about is a joke.
And furthermore, the majority of people in this country are Pro-Choice and it also happens to be the long-standing law in America. Is Palin implying that America is 'imperfect'? Hmm....

The overriding choice in this election is not between McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden, it is between two very different philosophies.
Thirty years ago America was sold a bill of goods by Ronald Regan, a charismatic Hollywood actor, and the Republican Party. Their beliefs were simply this. Government doesn't work so lets get rid of it and you'll see howwell the country can do without it. Rich people really care about the country so it is best to give them as much money as we can and because they are "Good Hearted Patriots" they are the ones best able to determine how to share it with the rest of the country. Culture Wars are a good thing. In a culture as mixed as the Americans the best idea is to let the smallest most vocal radical frenges have an equal voice in deciding the laws that govern eveyrone in the society. America, while it is supposed to be a "Nation of laws", it is above the law when it comes to "National Interest". Since "Whatever is best for America must be good for everybody else."
So what the voters have to decide in not wheather they want Obama or McCain. They have to decide if they want to continue folling the old idears of the past on this path to distruction or if they want to try something new.

My Liberal fellows, apparently the abortion topic IS very important to you. From what I have read on the web, most of the dems see it as the main difference between conservatives and liberals, and oh boy, how many liberal ladies have been bragging about the amount of abortions they had! To mgrardener: Palin's son is defending you and all of us, our freedoms and lives. Being a mother, I can not even imagine what she is going through every minute while her son is fighting for us. Do not worry, Sarah thinks that you are "worthy" since she sent her son to protect all of us including you. Sarah does respect and values human life, and she proved it by giving birth to a child with Dawn syndrome . How many of us could do it: giving life to this child and sending anotehr one to defend this country?

Rony, Rony, Rony, you obviously have never heard of the Commission of Presidential Debates. If you think that our presidents run our country, you are sadly mistaken. There was a reason that Ron Paul was excluded from debating. It wasn't because he mopped the floor with the competition (which he did), or because he knows how to fix healthcare (being a doctor for 17 yrs.). Some people think it was because he was an expert on the economy (and that's the last thing we need - lawyers are better fit to deal with our problems), and other think it was because he was the only candidate who stood for the same values ever since he started his political career and never "flip-flopped" on any issue (can you say that about any other politician that has ever existed?) I think it was because, he would've changed this corrupt and bankrupt nation for the better. This is exactly what the corporate-sponsored (owned & controlled) Commission on Presidential Debates DOES NOT WANT. These guys (lead by 1 Dem & 1 Repub) are the ones who have the final say in who gets to debate on national TV (and have their voices & message heard throughout the country). If you've never seen "Zeitgeist: The Addendum", then you clearly can not say that you know what you're talking about. My word is bond.
