AMERICAblog: Palin's smear to change the subject: "False" according to CNN. AP calls it "unsubstantiated." Wanna bet Brokaw makes it a debate topic?

  • hopelesspedant · 1 year ago
Nothing would be better for Obama than for this to come up on Tuesday,

    It could seal his victory.

Obama will be ready with a killer response, McCain would have to speak to the issue, it would spike this right away.

Tom Brokaw would be doing Obama a favor by asking it.

Not sure why that isn't the most obvious thing in the world - this is Politics 101.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
The adenoidal Brokaw, totally full of shit, his sinuses sounding more clogged than ever today, claimed that the Ayers-Obama connection just isn't "clear" and launched into the question with Begala without saying that the NYT definitively established that there was NO connection that cast Obama in a bad light. Brokaw, that old mediawhore for McCain (who must be a member of the Greatest Generation), is irresponsibly and unprofessionally muddying the issue.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
Brokaw......another one who has sold his soul to the culture of corruption.
  • GrMtGirl3 · 1 year ago
I am so in agreement. No way should he moderate the upcoming debate . . . he has openly picked his candidate and does nothing to hide his preference . . . he's been bought out "lock, stock and barrel" as have most of the so-called TV news casters.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
Here's a big part of the problem:
"The centerpiece of Sen. McCain’s economic plan — actually, the whole plan — is large tax cuts for corporations. It would deliver $1.44 billion in tax cuts to the five largest media companies..."

  • petefitSD · 1 year ago
first-this attack comes out the same day the Wa post is running a story about McCain and his military background; whatever honor or integrity he might have once had has been shredded by the constant stream of lies and misinformation coming out of his campaign...way to go Johnny boy, I'm sure your admiral dad and grandad would be very proud

second--no suprise that the campaign is trying to take a personal tack since they have absolutely no new ideas or vision to put forward as the new direction they want to take the country--this would be a third Bush term, the campaign is certainly being run like a Bush organization

third--given how the pentagon killed 1000's of innocent vietnamese civilians during the war and 1000's of innocent iraqi's have died as a result of this illegal way anyone who planned to bomb the pentagon should receive a commendation instead of a terrorist label

granted that is a rather extreme view, but trying to link Obama to someone who allegedly was involved in these activites when he was in grade school is pretty extreme in its own right; and didn't palin's 'first dude' belong to an organization that promoted Alaska's secession from the union? couldn't that possibly be viewed as a the actions of a terrorist???
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Fun fact: estimated number of total Vietnamese dead (both North and South): 3 million.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
If Ayers can still be considered a terrorist, why is he a distinqused Professor at the University and what about all the students that he has taught over the years, are their careers over before they even really started?

Does John McCain have a list of everyone that he has ever sat on a board with or that has held a fundraiser in his name or who has been to one of his many, many, many homes so that we can get a background check on all of these people.

What about the PTA that Palin was a part of can we investigate every parent or teacher on the PTA that she was a part of?

great questions. here's a partial list:

Thanks, I think McCain and Palin actually believe that either no one will bring those relationships up or that they can talk around it, because ya know they are 2 mavericks.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
I think his relationship with Keating who went to jail and to Delay and the kickbacks and bribes from casinos where McCain is a know heavy gambler should be the source of a great attack.
The truth doesn't matter to these right wing assholes. Lie, cheat, bribe, toe tap, wear a diaper, chase hookers, grab young interns everything is up for grabs as it were. Palin, knocked up daughter, hired her friends and unqualified just at Chimpy did. They are all the same. Once you pull off the wrapper they are the devil underneath. Nothing is sacred except themselves. They don't like people playing by the same rules. They are bullies and when challenged just shout and lie harder.
Look at this list of offenders who are Republican. It will take you a week to read all the files.

What CNN is tagging to is a repeat of its "truth squad" report saying that the charge is false.

Attacking CNN in this case. Their debunking of this is already on line.

Here's the thing ... ANY wrong doing Ayers was involved in 30+ years ago has already been prosecuted and he's paid his debt to society. If he hadn't he wouldn't be a professor at a university, he'd be hiding out somewhere... Besides his legal debt debt to society, he's been giving back through his community projects and teaching. ... or do the values that this country were founded on only apply to a select few?

There's an imbalance here, which a lot of Americans "get".

Biden, in VP role as campaign attack dog: convincing, since Biden and McCain are both Senators. Both have equivalent Senate careers. Biden is at least equal to McCain in terms of smarts, record, etc.

Palin, in VP role as campaign attack dog: unconvincing, since Palin NEVER, EVER achieved a record of accomplishment equal to Obama's, educationally, politically, personally, and intellectually.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
I agree there is an unbalance and Palin should have been respectful and called him Senator Biden, I bet her own running mate gets angry if she calls him John.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
Obama should address the political tactic of this attack if it's brought up at the debate.

Obama's Fight The Smears website is good.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Adriane: I don't think Brokaw will be that stupid to open up the door on the issue. All Obama has to do is graciously answer the question, and then bring up the question of the Keating 5 and McCain's involvement. In all fairness, Brokaw allowed the subject to be brought up on Meet the Press this morning.

    Otherwise Obama's ammunition will be.

    1. The Keating 5 scandal
    2. McCain's ties to lobbyists, Fannie and Freddie to name just two.
    3. McCain's gambling issues etc.
    4. McCain's ties to Hagee etc.

I'm hoping the moderator won't be that stupid.
  • martha · 1 year ago
He may be that stupid. I just hope Obama will HIT BACK with the points you just listed.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Obama can control the flow of the debate. Palin opened up the door for that last week. If I were Obama, I would announce at the outset that I expected things to be fair and balanced. Ask any question, but ask it of both candidates.

  • 4dogs · 1 year ago
I watched some of the highlights from MTP this morning. There was Tom Brokaw saying something like: it's not clear what Obama's ties to Ayers was. Well actually it was, and it was in the New York Times just the other day. I really am very disappointed in Brokaw, and I worry and how he's going to handle the debate. Obama better be ready to deal with this head on, because not only will he be up against McCain, but Brokaw will probably do everything he can to help McCain. How sad is that.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
A sad day for journalism thanks to Brokaw.
  • martha · 1 year ago
Yes, so sad. In my young adult years I looked to Brokaw as a smart, unbiased news person. I have been disgusted by his bias in this election. He is like so many people I know. They get a little money and all their morals and values go out the window. W has been great for the rich. They are getting richer. Tom Brokaw goes to cocktail parties with McCain in Georgetown. He is elite and he wants more of the same.
  • GrMtGirl3 · 1 year ago
4dogs: Totally sad and could be avoided. The problem is the McCain campaign has absolutely nothing to run on. All that remains is hate and character assination.
I have done everything I can in an attempt to get him disqualified.
    Obviously to no avail!

I ventured into this abyss yesterday - went to the Palin rally. I was flabbergasted to a new level of the LIES LIES LIES. Firstly, starting with the Shelley Mandell (LA NOW chapter President) who introduced Palin! Talk about women on women cat fights! I uploaded some video from yesterday. I have still not recovered. I believe that this election will be stolen & yesterday seeing the fanaticism of the attendees, I am convinced dirty politics like never seen before in USA will happen in the next month! Sample clip from yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzs56M9QCbk

Well if it IS stolen, it's time to overthrow the damned thing
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
Of course he will, and I hope he does. I have been SO impressed with the Obama campaign and Obama's preparation that I am confident it will all get turned back on McCain.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
It works, even thought it makes us nervous. Obama can contrlol the flow, and the more stupid stuff Brokaw brings up, the better it is for Obama.
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
Agreed. And every time I have been nervous so far the Obama campaign has come through in spades. Though still worried, I DO feel much better that they will be all over any rigging of the election. At least one can hope.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
I'm right there with you on the fear thing. It's just that I know people are so ignorant, and that they'll believe anything put in front of them. It would be great to have a dem for president, and a congress controlled by the dems. This means we could get things done! It looks like this might be the case this time.
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
OMG won't it? What a different world. However, if the Repugs steal it, I say it's time to go Founding Fathers on them and wipe the slate and start over.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Don't fret. The rethugs won't steal it this time. America has reached a point of critical mass, and Sarah Palin, at the end of day, will be viewed as the last nail in the coffin of the straight talk express.

McCain is on the ropes, and his health is becoming a question as well. Today, the Keating Five scandal will set the stage for tomorrow's debate. It'll weaken McCain considerably. All of the democratic pundits will be setting the stage for tomorrow's headlines. Palin is under attack in Alaska, and the state supreme court isn't blocking the investingation from moving forward. Expect a revelaing revelation about this soon!

It's about the economy, and everything happening now move this country in the direction of Obama and Biden. Obama is going to tie McCain into the present Crisis: McCain didn't learn from the past. Few peoplel know that McCain's involvement, and documented involvement is what led him to be a so-called reformer of his party. His conscience got the best of him back then, and he felt he had to do something to reform Washington corruption.

Obama will be able to tie all of that in to the John McCain of today, and his continued involvement with lobbyisists. In short, McCain hasn't learned the lessons of the past.
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
Excellent analysis and I do tend to agree. I've been voting since Goldwater and have never, ever seen this country as it is now. It is certainly not land of the free, etc. Furthermomre, the Republican Party is not the Republican party. These people have utterly ruined a once great nation. I am sure that is why I, and others, are gun shy. But, as I said, I do think your analysis is strong and based in fact and tend to agree. Except for the social wackos that have taken over the Republican Party, the a-political powers that be, i.e. corporations, etc. do realize that the country, and they, can't survive any more Republican rule.

    Headlines Scream Bailout Failed

Essentially, the bailout achieved zero. Actually, it did enrich the Wall Street crooks and probably some of it ended up in Bush’s secret overseas accounts, say maybe $400 billion of the $700 billion. But stopping the panic, restoring order, saving homeowners homes ending the predatory subprime variable rate ballooning mortgages that caused this crisis, nope! Nothing doing. Of course not. The CEOs are the real Americans, the movers and shakers, the ones whose hard work built and drive America, make those stupid, lazy, loutish, worthless peons, commoners, surfs, and slaves work, work, work, work, work, work and work.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Unfortunately, McPain and Palin have this record of repeating lies, again, and again, even though it has been disproved again, and again. The woman kept repeating the lie about the bridge to nowhere "thanks, but no thanks" ad nauseum, even though the media called her on it. McLiars keep lying about Obama raising taxes for the middle class, even in the debates, which is blatant.
So what makes anyone think that they will now shut up about Ayers? Last week, the dumb one, Hasslebeck brought this up a couple of times, it looks like their mindless supporters in the media are already spreading these false accusation. I hope Obama is able to nip this garbage in the bud.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Oh yeah, I expect Brokaw to do just that. I saw a clip of him interviewing Paul Begala in which he showed tape of what Palin said and then asked Begala if Obama should not have addressed this earlier. BTW, I think Begala did very well in answering him. Obama will be expecting this Tuesday night, but I just wish the Obama campaign would do an ad or two in kind, attacking John McCain for his associations.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
In the interview with Begala, Brokaw stupidly or dishonestly called the Ayers-Obama connection "under the radar." Hardly: not a day goes by without Hannity, for one, harping on it vocally.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
If anyone can understand Brokaw...today, on the Meat Press, his impediment, more pronounced than usual, made his speech less than crystal clear.

  • davidinchelseama · 1 year ago
Seriously, where are the 527's with an add about Palin's Alaska Separatist Group?

It should go something like this:

"Sarah Palin says she one of us - a regular American , Joe Six-Pack...........REALLY?......Then why did she speak at a group that wants to SEPARATE ITSELF from the rest of us? Sarah, why do you HATE AMERICA?
  • burro · 1 year ago
    The antidote for Ayersism:

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/10/5/102...

    And if Sarah Palin,

    Or Tom Brokaw...

wants to talk about palling around with people who find America less than perfect, then it's time to talk about her association with the Alaska Independence Party (AIP), the secessionist group whose founder, Joe Vogler once said:

The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government...and I won't be buried under their damn flag...

I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions.

Palin's complete dealings with the group isn't entirely clear, and unfortunately we can't ask Mr. Vogler about it since he was murdered in a plastic explosives sale gone bad," but we do know this: Sarah Palin probably attended the AIP convention 1994, the McCain campaign admits she attended in 2000, and as governor, Palin taped a welcoming message to them in 2006, saying:

Your party plays an important role in our state's politics. I've always said that competition is so good, and that applies to political parties as well. I share your party's vision of upholding the constitution of our great state... So I say good luck on a successful and inspiring convention. Keep up the good work, and God bless you.

Add to that, Todd Palin, aka, the "First Dude," was a registered member of AIP from 1995 until 2002, coincidentally changing his party affiliation when she began her first campaign for public office.

So, we have Sarah Palin, actively involved with a secessionist group that professes its hatred for America, and whose husband was a card-carrying member of the group for seven years. And don't forget, Todd Palin isn't just the spouse of an elected official. He has been called a Shadow Governor, attending private meetings, being sent on fact finding trips, and being copied on emails that were later "prohibited from being released to the public due to executive privilege." This man would be a 72-year old heartbeat and a pillow away from the presidency.

So if Sarah Palin wants to talk about questionable associations, bring it on.
  • wmforr · 1 year ago
If Brokaw wants to bring up Ayers, perhaps Obama should give the public a brief education in the history of Charles Keating.
  • KingCranky · 1 year ago
"Toady Tom" Brokaw, or "Toadying Tom" Brokaw, both have such an accurate ring to them.

"Toadyin' Tom" would play just as well since Palin drops far too many "g"s in an attempt to show common cause with "Joe & Jane Sixpack".

Although one wonders how "Joe & Jane Sixpack" have anything in common with the Palins, what with their Sarah & Todd's millions of dollars in the bank and the fact they run a state.
