AMERICAblog: Plagiarism on the NYT op ed page?

  • ThingsComeUndone · 1 year ago
Just how long did it take the Times to investigate Jayson Blair? This might be a mistake but with William the Bloody's record of mistakes I think we have the kind of long pattern of abuse employers love before they fire someone.

Similar, but probably not enough to hang a plagiarism charge on Kristol. I am more surprised by the reference in both pieces arguing that Obama lost the fight on the Webb Bill. How did he lose it? The bill passed overwhelmingly. McCain looks like a coward for failing to show up. McCain has a slight advantage with his reputation on military affairs. But please, it is a reputation and his recent gaffs on the middle east as well as his lack of knowledge on troop dispositions will soon dispel that reputation.

Not really buying it. "Sin of omission" is a common phrase, and as for the rest -- is it surprising that Bill Kristol is parrotting conservative musings? His job is to get those ideas onto the pages of the NY Times...

Same title? Hell of a coincidence, especially using the same phrase "sins of omission." Yeah, it's a common phrase, except that it's not. How often do you use it in a day?
  • kingmans_performance · 1 year ago
While i don't doubt the title was lifted, i just dont see where in the passage Kristol was stealing....sure, the ideas are similar and use similar verbiage...but he is after all referencing something that has been recently in the news ie the "squabble over veterans benefits". i dont think it really constitutes plagiarism

Every time I got to confession!

I've already used it several times today :)

Google '"sin of omission" -obama' and you'll see how common it is; there's a ton of results. I'm not defending Kristol who probably did steal the idea for the piece -- note that he begins by complaining about the effort involved in writing things like commencement addresses (and daily columns?) -- but it doesn't seem to me to rise to the level of plagiarism if the main indicator is a figure of speech like "sin of omission". Just my two cents.

Repeating GOP talking points word for word works for TV journalists Bill has to give the source Rove credit if he quotes him. Rove is responsible for all GOP talking points. You can tell they were all written by one person there is a certain style facts are flexible, moral outrage if a Democrat does something, repeat the talking point again if you get into trouble.
Hmmm someone should do an analysis of GOP talking points.

Keith did that brilliantly the other night regarding the RW's use of the word "puzzling" in reference to Scott McClellan. : )

    Dear NYT,
The only thing worse than hiring bedwetters is hiring lazy bedwetters

William writing about Obama forgetting Military service is funny coming from a guy who did not serve. Does Bill support Webb's G.I bill? Does Bill support ending stop loss orders? Put it this way does Bill support Tax Cuts for the Rich more than he supports the troops?
God so loved the World he GAVE HIS ONLY SON
Bill so loved the troops he would not spare them a Dime!
Rich men ,heaven, eyes of needles, Camels

Maybe a better question is who is Bill's editor?
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
When is someone at the NYT going to realize that Kristol is nothing but a rightwing HACK?
  • Subroutine · 1 year ago
Excellent point. Kristol provides neither news nor comment. The NYT simply provides that flaming asshole with a venue for launching right-wing political attacks. He should be fired.

Kristol, Rove, Cheney, Bush have the right to bitch about military anything they want! They are true heroes in my book. The real deal. They served with honor. Well Bush served turkey dinners with honor anyway. Rove must have served Jeffy Lube with honor. Cheney serves Halliburton with honor. Kristol serves Krystal champagne with honor.

Plagiarism can get you fired at any decent publication. How 'bout it kids?
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
by the way, what is going on with the GI Bill? didn't it pass by a non-veto margin?
  • DAB · 1 year ago
He might have taken that title from RealClearPolitics's article, but "sins of omission" is an extremely common phrase in theology circles, often contrasted or paired with "sins of commission." Or, as the Episcopal Church's prayerbook translates the phrase into more contemporary language, "things done and left undone." I've never given Kristol credit for an original thought (unless you count "we'll be greeted as heroes when we invade Iraq," which I guess one could argue is indeed pretty, uh, "creative"), and I don't even doubt him capable of plagiarism, but this seems an unlikely example of it.

It amazes me that the right has the balls to bring up military service.

An awful lot of them sure don't have the balls to join up.

    (I love the edit feature!)
  • Subroutine · 1 year ago
That's funny. The thought of military service seems never to have occurred to little Billy, either. That egg-sucking, yellow coward never served either....he just recommends it to others.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Bill Kristol, plagiarist. It sounds about right to my ears. The fall of the mighty is wondrous to behold.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
A lazy hack who, metaphorically speaking, phones it in a coupla times a week. What IS the NYT paying him for such shoddy unprofessional conduct?
  • LeslieB · 1 year ago
Kristol neglected to mention that Bush has had the same "sin of omission." This from a guy who never served in the military but has no problem volunteering everyone else's children.

This is becoming a weekly thing. I can almost set my watch by it: what Kristol left out, or what hypocrasy he left in, or what fact he got wrong.

Mo, Larry and Curly could do a better job. His tenure at the times has completely undermined his image.

He's gone from being wrong on most issues, to being farcically wrong on most issues.

Instead of being shocked or angered by him, I'm getting a laugh. Once a week.

Bill Kristol, master of self mockery and a self satirist. Quite apporpriate for the age of Myopia and Narcississim.
