AMERICAblog: Polls flip: Gays about to lose marriage in California

  • rednose · 1 year ago
Thanks for directing attention to this, John, and the link to the ActBlue page for No on Prop 8. An Obama win will be far sweeter if California weighs in with a vote for love and inclusion as well!
  • justadood · 1 year ago
Wish it were otherwise, but why does it seem that an election gets characterised less by the popularity of the porposition/bill, than by the amount of money being spent in advertisement for it?

Makes it look and sound like they're buying passage, and we're buying rejection. It's a bad way to frame the process, don'tcha think? Of course it's even worse in that it's mostly true---our votes may be mostly pro-forma, while the real action takes place in the exchanges of $$$$....... Whatta sad commentary on the state of modern politics...
  • fastneataverage · 1 year ago
Yes, please help out as much as you can. I'm in California and almost fainted when I saw that NoOnProp8 may lose. We're being inundated with commercials from the advocates, and ballots have already started arriving in the mail for permanent absentee voters (which many of us are).

    Thank you!!
  • davidinchelseama · 1 year ago
This is PATHETIC. How the hell can this happen in blue California?

We will never lose same-sex marriage in Massachusetts. And one day there will be someone from here challenging the federal government for full faith and credit with respect to Social Security Survivor Benefits, and I have faith that WE WILL WIN at the Supreme Court level.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
Most of CA is not blue. And there is A LOT of money coming from outside the state. A lot coming from Utah. And unfortunately Orange County has given 1/4 of all the money for the Yes on 8 campaign.
  • frizbeesf · 1 year ago
The problem is ( and yes I donated and phonebank for NoOn8) is our ad is too weak. We need to call bigots what they are, yes this about saving marriage for EVERYONE but it is also about STOPPING people who HATE their fellow Californians and want to codify that HATE into Civil Law. If prop 8 passes it will pass because a majority of CA voters DIDN'T vote on it at all. While calling for NoOn8, one of the common answers I heard was " prop 8 has nothing to do with me so I wont vote on it" NOT that they would vote NO, but rather they just wouldnt vote on it at ALL..

We need ads that say clearly that if you vote YES on 8 you are voting YES on HATE.
  • existenz · 1 year ago
Agreed. They need to make hard-hitting ads that say "NO to DISCRIMINATION, NO to PROP 8". And yes, the rich gay community in California really needs to step up big time. David Geffen has the bucks to defeat this thing single-handed if he wanted, or at least with his rolodex.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
    NO on hate!

    No on 8!

Geez, it's such a catchy phrase you would think they would have adopted that now in their ads.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
Thanks John. I needed another reminder to contribute. I just gave my single largest contribution to any political recipient. We have to defeat this amendment. There are phone banking opportunities in LA, Long Beach, Orange County, and San Diego (as well as SF, and other cities, I am sure) nearly every night. If you have a few hours you should contact either Equality California or Human Rights Campaign to get involved.

    http://www.alternet.org/rights/101958/thousands...

Background: the First Brigade of the Third Infantry Division, three to four thousand soldiers, has been deployed in the United States as of October 1. Their stated mission is the form of crowd control they practiced in Iraq, subduing "unruly individuals," and the management of a national emergency. I am in Seattle and heard from the brother of one of the soldiers that they are engaged in exercises now. Amy Goodman reported that an Army spokesperson confirmed that they will have access to lethal and non lethal crowd control technologies and tanks.

George Bush struck down Posse Comitatus, thus making it legal for military to patrol the U.S. He has also legally established that in the "War on Terror," the U.S. is at war around the globe and thus the whole world is a battlefield. Thus the U.S. is also a battlefield.

He also led change to the 1807 Insurrection Act to give him far broader powers in the event of a loosely defined "insurrection" or many other "conditions" he has the power to identify. The Constitution allows the suspension of habeas corpus -- habeas corpus prevents us from being seized by the state and held without trial -- in the event of an "insurrection." With his own army force now, his power to call a group of protesters or angry voters "insurgents" staging an "insurrection" is strengthened.
  • Outraged2 · 1 year ago
Sorry to digress here, but when McCain said "That one!" last night, it struck me as weirdly familiar. It just occurred to me -- when my grand mother and then my mother began to succumb to Alzheimer's, one of the first things noticeable was the way they messed up their use of prepositions, like "the boy" instead of using someone's name. Aside from being a closet racist, on the heels of his most recent gaff about "my fellow prisoners", I SERIOUSLY question his remaining mental faculties now more than ever.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
How does my marriage in California affect heterosexual couples in Utah?

all this money supporting prop 8 is coming from OUTSIDE CALIFORNIA!

that's it... if this passes, I'm going straight-bashing in the states the contributions came from.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
The fundies know the culture war is lost officially if gay marriage is allowed to remain in CA. They have to defeat it.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
its a culture war of their own creation though.

they're known as 'fundies'... they're really just well funded domestic terrorists.

"bow to our demands or we'll crush you." Is there any difference between their beliefs and that of Al Quaida? different religions is all.

    so much for democracy.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
Of course it is of their own creation. That does not change the fact that it is real in the minds of a lot people in this country.
  • 11phil11 · 1 year ago
I've given in this election until it hurts, including contributions outside of my home state of Illinois. However, why should I send any more of my hard-earned money from my modest salary when millionaire gays and lesbians in California and other states will not step up to the plate with large and transparent donations? Ellen? Rosie? Geffen? Elton? Lance Bass? Lohan and Ronson? Stipe? What about all of the celebrities with their big gay following? Cher? Midler? Liza? Kathy Griffin? Streisand? WTF?!
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
This has been a real sticking point among a lot of us working to defeat this prop. But we fight anyway and do what we need to do to win.
  • Laura-In-CC (fka Doodlebug) · 1 year ago
How do you know that they haven't already donated big bucks? Just because a celebrity donates money doesn't mean that they want that info bandied about in the news. Often it is done anonymously.

So, to answer your question...because it is the right thing to do to save some modicum of equality for all of us.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
Contributions cannot be made anonymously. The FEC reports that have to filed show the names of all contributors over a certain amount. It might be as little as $50.
  • chrisdb · 1 year ago
The No On 8 folks are running a too polite campaign. They need to let Californians know that the Mormon Church is trying rewrite the Constitution of California. That won't go over well.

Please donate and then email the No On 8 campaign telling to expose the Mormon Church's involvement.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
It's all about donating money, huh? That doesn't sound like something I can believe in. I believe in gay marriage. Gaud knows I'm still waiting for Brad to phone me, but if it's just a money thing, nothing more than a money thing, and only a money thing that can be passed only by conjuring more money then talk to the hand. Californication has deeper moral issues to sort out than gay marriage.
  • existenz · 1 year ago
    That's pretty cold-hearted.

If you don't have money, you can donate time or calls friends and family in California. But "talk to the hand"? Come on, it takes money to put ads on TV and that's the only way most of these California props can be defeated.

The No on 8 folks need to put out some eye-catching, hard-hitting ads that say "Do Not Write Discrimination Into the Constitution". I would also like to see Ellen make this a BIG issue on her show. If she could break down in tears over a dog, she can break down in tears over this.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
    THANKS for posting this John.

I want to have the right to be married when I meet "the one".
I just emailed ALL my friends/family this morning with the same information.

No on 8 has to come back hitting.

    - NO on hate!
    - NO on 8!

As a Californian I am putting my phoning efforts here and Neveda for Obama (CA is overwhelmingly going for Obama).
  • dacnova · 1 year ago
Keep pushing this, John. I gave $100 last night.
  • Skycat · 1 year ago
What I find really disheartening is to hear the pro Prop. 8 commercial on KTLK in Los Angeles. I don't know much about how ad space is distributed, but KTLK is owned by Clear Channel. Still it seems quite weird to hear these blurbs on a station which features progressive voices like Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartman, Randi Rhodes and Rachel Maddow.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
I actually think it is a good thing. Let them blow their money on people COMPLETELY unreceptive to the Yes campaign. The more money spent on trying to reach people who already and will continue to oppose Prop 8 is good for our side.
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
I'm not gay, but I'd find this to be truly disheartening if this happens. I really thought CA would be ready for it in 2008. Every year we gain a little ground on this issue as the close-minded older folks die off and the younger open-minded people enter the voting population.

Even though these new polls are worrisome, I still believe we have a chance at defeating this hateful proposition.
  • Laura-In-CC (fka Doodlebug) · 1 year ago
I have previously given to Equality California, now to ActBue. Though I live in Nevada, California is my home and I wouldn't like to see hate enshrined in its constitution as has been done here in Nevada (2002). We got married in Vancouver, BC in 2004 and feel absolutely wonderful when we go to my parents' house knowing that we're "married" and it counts in CA.

It isn't just those affected by the proposition -- it's every single American. Encourage your friends, even though far from California, to donate to the cause -- if they can't do $50 or more, donate $5 or $10 or $1 -- this issue is too important to allow for failure.
  • blogmob · 1 year ago
if they bring out the big vote numbers, does obama then lose california? it seems like most if not nearly all prop 8 supporters would be anti-obama as well, but maybe i am being simplistic.
  • Eric on the Beach · 1 year ago
There is no chance of Obama losing in CA, however not everyone votes for the props. So 30% of the voting electorate could cause this to pass. If every single person who voted for the Presidential candidates voted on the props, I do not think it would pass. But there will be people on both sides who only vote for the props and people who only vote for President.
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
Obama does not support same-sex marriage, so this may have no impact at all upon the presidential election. He does support civil unions - but only in states that approve it. He sucks on this subject, but I am still voting for him.
  • usagi · 1 year ago
Why? He doesn't deserve it (spare me the flames--he's carrying California by 20+ points come November--I see no reason to give him a pass on this).
  • frizbeesf · 1 year ago
Well If Prop Hate err..I mean 8 does manage to pass, the response of ALL LGBT Californians should be very clear.

This April when you sit down to do you CA State Income Taxes caculate the total cost per taxpayer of all the Marriage/family courts, & services along with the state/ city costs of processing Marriage licenses etc. then WITHHOLD that amount from your CA Income Taxes.

If we are not going have the rights of full citizens of Calfornia , fine. But then CA cannot tax us as full citizens either.

Also the next time you get a summons for Jury Duty send a nice note back saying "Sorry, I dont have to particiapte in Jury Duty ever again, since the people of CA have clearly said the courts do not matter and they get to pick what rights I have compared as my fellow citizens, then I get to pick which responsibilites I have .

The BASIS for American Independence was the citizens of the 13 colonies being taxed as full subjects of the British Crown but not having the full RIGHTS as subjects . THIS IS NO DIFFERENT. If I am to be told that I am a 2nd class citizen then I REFUSE to pay first class taxes. It's time for homphobes to put their money where there mouths are.
  • RobertSanDimas · 1 year ago
Gosh darnit. I was feeling pretty doggone good after last night's "debate" and hearing that imPalin was drawing some scorn today. Then, as the day wore on, a few polls got tight. Now I read that I may have to cancel my wedding plans in November. Folks, we're 66 and 68. We need to get married NOW. We're "domestically partnered" here in CA, but that just isn't the same. The ad the religulous right has on TV and radio has done damage. It's nasty and full of falsehoods. I've written to three papers, two TV stations and one radio station. They didn't do what I told 'em. Help us out.
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
How come all those Hollywood folks couldn't put their money where their mouths are on this one? I know some have given, but not nearly enough.
  • mermaidart · 1 year ago
If you live in SoCal, please call KTLK, our "progressive" talk station and complain about the pro-8 ads they are running constantly. The phone number is: 818-559-2252. I have called the comment line several times and left messages reflecting my disappointment (in a nice way). I know stations need ad revenue, but they need to remember who their audience is.
  • RobertSanDimas · 1 year ago
I did. Thanks for your comment and urging others to do the same.
  • mermaidart · 1 year ago
Thanks, Robert.? I'm a huge supporter of that station, but I have to turn it off every time one of those ads comes on.? I'm very disheartened by this.? I have so many cherished gay friends, that it breaks my heart for them that this is even an issue.
    Anne
  • usagi · 1 year ago
Don't stop with the stations. Start with the other advertisers & ask why they're supporting Prop 8. They're ads are being heard in tandem with it, so they must be supporting it, right? Sometimes the only way to fight dumb and irrational is with dumb and irrational.
  • Schtu · 1 year ago
    I gave another $200 today.

The Newsom bashing is silly. This is not his fault.
  • Yukio · 1 year ago
i gave money too, and i agree - bashing gavin newson makes no sense.

your bashing newsom for an out-of-context comment in _2004_ is just as bad as the ad using it, john.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
So, if the republicans are going to lose an election they will get back by punishing California gays and lesbians who have married. This nonsense has to stop. This is the twenty-first century and bigots in this country still want us to be second-class citizens? You Mormons from Utah need to keep your nose out of other states and their affairs. Interfering with the laws of another state should be a crime.
A pox on you and all your wives! ;-)
  • mermaidart · 1 year ago
I don't know why question marks showed up in my post. Oh, well...
  • Jessica54 · 1 year ago
I live in the bay area, and that Newsom ad has been shown many times on TV. The opposing side's ad with the parents, I'm sorry to say, stinks. It doesn't catch your attention whatsoever, while the Newsom ad is more to the point.

The Newsom ad says near the end, (and I'm paraphrasing) "If Prop 8 is defeated, gay marriage will be taught in schools." The first time I heard it, I laughed because it's so ridiculous. But, apparently people believe that garbage and it is disappointing/surprising to me that polls have flipped.

Where is the ads showing the economic melt down, lost jobs, global warming, high gas prices and all the other problems our country is facing along with the question, "And these people want to concentrate on who can legally get married?!!! Please, turn the page, America! Stop the hate, and start solving REAL problems! Stop creating problems where none exist, and end these silly campaigns once and for all. VOTE FOR EQUALITY FOR ALL!"
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I just gave $20.00. I wish I could afford more but I'm helping my partner raise a nineteen year old son of ours who is about to lose his job! He was working as a busboy, and they cut his hours back because they were able to hire a more desperate, elderly man who needs the money for his family because of the Bu$hco. economy. I would be fighting mad, but the elderly guy is a Democrat and didn't vote for Bu$hco. twice. Therefore, I understand his predicament. Had our son's coworker voted for the economy, by being a Republican, I wouldn't be such a nice, supportive parent regarding my kid getting hours slashed.
  • mermaidart · 1 year ago
I gave Obama $50.00 right before I got laid off (I work for a real estate agent). I'm two weeks late on my mortgage and have no money to spare. Do I buy food or pay the phone bill? Things in Cali are bad enough without this abomination of a proposition. Saw "Religulous" today - quite timely.
  • nikto · 1 year ago
Oh crap, so Prop8 is gaining strength?

I still can't believe we have so many stone-age Californians.

Only electronic vote-flipping can pass that piece of shit.

But I'm sure Diebold (or similar) are working on it.
  • fastneataverage · 1 year ago
John: can you move this back on top?
  • rphillips4165 · 1 year ago
Can I mention something? In the entire article you never asked people to get out and actually vote. You only asked for money. Moneys great, but if they don't vote what good does it do. This is why our economy is in the dumps. We judge everything on how much it costs. You want to make sure we win this make sure you vote and make sure your friends vote. Volunteer to drive them to vote. The more people you get there the better off we will be.
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
Part of the problem is that many of the ads supporting hate are focused only upon teaching 'gay marriage' to young children in school. They don't even mention that the vote is about the right to marry.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
It's no longer about tolerance. Acceptance of gay marriage is now mandatory....

    What does that even mean?

    Tolerance should only be voluntary?

I'm straight, but this kind of fascist bullshit pisses me off to no end.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
Ok, you got me. Repeating myself, I'm contributing because I know the damage such a proposition can cause. In Michigan in 2004 a similar prop passed and outlawed same-sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partnership benefits for public employees. Addiing insult to injury, it was upheld by the Michigan Supreme Court.
  • Helga3412 · 1 year ago
That disgusting Newsom ad is running in So. CA constantly. I am so sick of it. And there have been no ads opposing Prop. 8, at least where I live. I keep reading about all the money donated to oppose the bill and the million some mormon fellow gave to oppose the bill, so where are their ads?
  • Dagobert2nd · 1 year ago
I wish more of the political blogs would push this. It is insane how much out of state
money the fundies are bringing in. Also, the organizations fighting this need to be a
    lot more aggressive.
  • switched · 1 year ago
I've heard the radio ad with the Newsom nonsense and the claim that we'll mandate that kids learn about gay marriage. The Newsom part works extremely well but the forcing kids to learn that Bob and Bill are married just like John and Cindy is probably equally compelling to those that support this stripping of rights. I kicked in some cash for the equal rights side of this.

What's with the bash on Gavin? If it wasn't for his courage on this issue we wouldn't even have gay marriage rights to take away.
  • Schtu · 1 year ago
Yeah, Sully is bashing him too. Before Gavin came along Civil Unions were radical.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
As far as the comments from Gavin, I'll admit they weren't the most tactful but Gavin doesn't deserve to get trashed by anyone on our side. Again, it was Gavin that started the ball rolling on this in the first place.(I know you know this but it bears repeating)

As far as Sully and John, they were never particularly supportive of the fight for marriage equality a few years ago. It's convenient now I guess.

I keep seeing their lying ads on TV that if Prop8 goes down , then churches will be liable for hate speech and children will be taught gay sex. Where are our ads? Oh, we're $10million in the hole. PLEASE HELP, if Prop8 passes this will set us back for decades.

To hell with the celebrities giving money (although I like Brad Pitt even more & for different reasons this week), I want to know where all the merchant dollars are. Where's Macy's, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kay Jewelers, etc. money going? They all lined up to buy ad space in the papers to separate giddy queers dashing to the alter from their money, how about a little support from that front?

John, don't talk trash about our next governor (FSM forbid--he's not qualified to be mayor).

I donated $40 earlier this year, put in another $160 last night, and then sent out the (polite) guilt-trip email to friends. When I flew back to California in September, I spoke with one of the fellowship groups at the church where I was raised--the church I haven't seen in years since I turned atheist in college.

It's unjust to have to beg for the right to marry, but the opportunity to do so is more than my parents had. I'm a son of Taiwanese immigrants who grew up under Chiang Kai-Shek's dictatorship. People who said the wrong things disappeared--political murder was _normal_.

Why are the pro same-sex marriage ads so stupid? Why should I donate more money to make more stupid ads? This is a civil-rights matter. After 39 years of living together we got married in Canada. NY state has declared our marriage to be fully legal. It means nothing. If proposition 8 does pass it will mean nothing because there are no federal laws to back us up. Let them write their hatred into the state constitution. Let them be ashamed. We can work for rights in others ways. Why shouldn't children learn about 'gay marriage'? Why is that a bad thing to teach them? Why is everything in this country about money? The Mormons are no more Christians than are Scientologists. Let them all show themselves for what they are: frightened, ignorant, and un-Christian. They're too ill-informed even to understand the religion they profess to follow.

My problem with the "No on Prop 8" campaign is the lack of response to the Yes on 8 first ad. This is just like what happened on Prop 22, they didn't know how to attack back. They seem to be afraid to attack or at least dispell the lies.
  • sbjules · 1 year ago
I live in Santa Barbara. I've only seen maybe two McCain-Palin signs around town and hundreds of Obama signs. I got a recorded message last night from Mike Huckabee reminding me to vote for Proposition 8. It shocked me so much I donated immediately to No on 8. I just cannot believe it will pass, but I'm not complacent any longer.

What I don't understand is the Morman Church is supposed to be a tax exempt entity. Well in order to maintain that tax free status. They are not suppose to try to influence political opinion. By giving millions to pass prop 8. We all need to be calling the IRS and demand their tax exempt status be revoked. I did this yesterday and they stated they would take down my concerns.
