AMERICAblog: Popular conservative radio host says autism patients are faking it

  • falloch · 1 year ago
Surely Michael Savage must have some Repug listeners who are raising an autistic child. Or is autism something that happens only to Democrat families?
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
Congressman Dan Burton (R) held hearings on the causes of autism, and I think he has a grandchild who is autistic.
  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
Not exactly new news. This was all over the Media Matters website a week ago. But still. What an absolutely arrogant uncaring ass hole. Of course I shouldn't call Savage an ass hole. Even an ass hole has a function.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
Well I missed it when it was "all over" Media Matters, so thanks John.
  • Rab · 1 year ago
This scumbag still has sponsors? Even repugs have autistic children, whats it take to shut this piece of shit up?
  • eagleye · 1 year ago
I'm a flip-flopper, continually going back and forth between thinking that we ought to point out that people like Savage are not authentic conservatives, but rather some perverse breed of psycho-Fascist. But on others days I wonder if we are smarter to stick them with the conservative tag and ruin their brand.
  • akryan · 1 year ago
What an asshole. I'm a teacher and have seen plenty of autistic kids. It's not an act.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
And we trust Michael Savage's "opinion" because of his years studying medicine? What gives this horse's ass the right to dismiss this disease as "faking it" or misbehaving? I wish there were a way to drain the gene pool and scrub it down well with disinfectant. These republican haters with nothing better to do need to crawl back under the slimy rock they came out from under. He's always screaming about his rights and yet we hear this constant drivel coming from his pie-hole. "What goes around, comes around." It's past time for the "come around," for this jerk.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
The more that people bitch and moan about the buffoon that is Savage the more his listenership increases.
  • Traumatic · 1 year ago
He has learned that the more radical your position, the more people will listen to you. He's probably not even given the subject more than a passing thought. It sounds like a comment made by someone who doesn't want to hvae to think about hard topics. Just dismiss it and it goes away. What an absolute coward!
  • Damned_at_Random · 1 year ago
I babysat triplets, one of whom is autistic, though higher functioning than most. It was apparent that he was different long before he began to talk (later than his siblings of course). So how DO you discipline a toddler who beats his head against the wall for no apparent reason? After a year in an early intervention program, his verbal skills are much improved and he interacts with others much more "normally."

This was my first experience with autism and there is no doubt in my mind that it wasn't faked. Of course, I'm not a narcissistic sociopath like the Savage Weiner.
  • jr · 1 year ago
Michael Savage's son owns Rockstar energy drinks. He should have to pay for the sins of his father
  • kevinbgoode · 1 year ago
"Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism?"
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uh. . .no we don't, Michael Savage. But then, no one gets to respond to your question, do they? Someone is paying you to spout off any stupid thing that comes into your head, pretending there is such a big market out there rather than the monopoly of bullshit using the public airwaves. That's right, Savage - who told you that we wanted to know what you think and what makes your thoughts so fucking privileged that they are the only type of thing we hear on our public airwaves?
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
was Savage's rant intended to further the conservative BS that every child needs a father, not just a mother, and heaven forbid, gay parents, or what? that heterosupremacist GOPer theory that links all problems to the absence of a dictatorial, domineering male father in a traditional family setting??? Savage is a psycho.
  • Eclectablog · 1 year ago
My middle name is Michael. My last name is Savage.

    I'm so embarrassed...
  • Jenius · 1 year ago
Don't worry, as long as your *real* last name isn't Weiner, you're in the clear.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Yep, his real name is Michael Alan Weiner....or as my friends and I like to refer to him, The Savage Weiner....I'd love for someone to call him and address him as Dr. Weiner...that would be hysterical. I keep thinking that one of these days he's liable to have a stroke live on the air. He screams and rants like a lunatic...
  • hardeknox · 1 year ago
It's pronounced the German way, with an "I." The tubesteak is pronounced with an "E." He's actually an educated man. How he got to be this way is beyond me. Maybe he's autistic.
  • Wisconsin Liberal · 1 year ago
Reminds me of a saying where I used to work "Must be his asshole talking because his mouth knows better".
Wish I would have thought of the phrase, but feel free to use.
  • SouthernYankee · 1 year ago
Listen to the man, there he goes again speaking through his ass.
  • MElouise · 1 year ago
I'm in the same room as an autistic child right now; our 10 year old daughter. She is a delightful girl- caring, funny, smart and kind- as well as aware that she needs to work much harder than her older sister to accomplish her goals, due to her autism. It doesn't discourage her- rather, it has taught her to have patience and diligence.

I would FAR rather have a child like that than a child that gows up to be of the Mike Savage ilk, any day of the week. Savage and his ignorant sort can go fuck themselves- they are subhuman at best.

    Michael Savage on Women:
"I'm beginning to think that women should be denied the vote. Their hormones rage; they are too emotional." San Jose Mercury News, November 6, 1998.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
Dr Jesse Jackson has a medical procedure which could cure Savage of his own hormonal rages!
  • jenjen64 · 1 year ago
Hi new here, well new to the comments but not the blogs and boards.
As to your comment dad, I want to add that Ann Coulter feels the same way about women voters. As a matter of fact I believe she mentioned the same reasons!
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
General Savage visits the wounded at the front...

    What's the matter with you?

I guess I just can't take it, sir.

    What did you say?

It's my nerves, sir. I just can't stand the shelling anymore.

Your nerves? Hell, you're just a goddamn coward. Shut up! I won't have
    a yellow bastard crying. . .
. . .in front of these brave, wounded men.

Shut up! Don't admit this yellow bastard. Nothing wrong with him. I won't have sons of bitches afraid to fight stink up this place of honor. You're going back to the front, my friend.
You may get shot, you may get killed, but you're going up to the fighting. Either that or I'll stand you up in front of a firing squad.
I should shoot you myself, you bastard! Get him out of here. Send him up to the front! You hear me? You goddamn coward! I won't have cowards in my army.
  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
Savage is subhuman. He belongs in a mental instution, not on the radio. He is a sick sick man.
  • steve303 · 1 year ago
When I first read about Savage's comments this morning I was appalled, but as I thought about it more I realized that this is simply natural extension of current conservatism. Under conservative principles, if you are weak in America you are either faking or morally corrupt, and a drain on the country. Weakness needs to be eliminated, and we know the logical extension of that argument. . . . All hail Obergruppenführer Savage, he will show us a way to his purer stronger America.

    KKKOnservatives:

    Evil, and WRONG about everything.

    This is empirically true.
  • KeithNovo · 1 year ago
So, what's to note that Savage is faking it? I just happened to tune into one of his shows the past week while searching for a baseball game. Too many stations with baseball games have reactionaries on the other times. I find these hosts who practice reactionary onanism too disgusting to listen long.
  • Zorba · 1 year ago
i'm a retired special education teacher, and I taught plenty of autistic students (mainly teenagers and younf adults). Sure, Michael, these kids are simply undisciplined. Why, all undisciplined children without a fathers simply love standing in a corner for hours at a time, gazing at their hands flipping back and forth. They adore banging their heads on the ground/wall. They have fun running around and screaming all night and not getting any sleep. They are absolutely delighted about not being able to communicate and having no friends. Never mind that many of my students came from two-parent families who also had perfectly normal children. This man is a sub-human, walking piece of shit. If he really believes this, he's a complete idiot. If he's only saying this to be provocative and get publicity, he's immoral and lacks any vestige of a conscience.
  • MElouise · 1 year ago
Thank you, zorba. If Savage were anywhere near here, I'd be arrested within an hour...
  • Zorba · 1 year ago
MElouise, it sounds as if you have some experience with autism, possibly in your family (maybe your child?). If so, please accept my deeply heartfelt wishes that you and your loved one are doing well- I know that it is not easy to raise an autistic child. They were challenging enough to deal with for six hours a day, five days a week. You have them 24/7. And yet, and yet......they are real people, and I loved them deeply, and so did their families (even more so). Despite the difficulties, despite the fact that you may realize that they will not have an easy life (nor will you). They are our loved ones. They can be hurt, but they also can grow, and learn, and just.....be. And Savage is probably the most incredible jerk that I can think of right now.
  • MElouise · 1 year ago
10 year old daughter, diagnosed 7 years ago. Doing better than we ever would have dreamed, due to her own hard work and years of intensive therapies. An utter love of a person, who fortunately understands that when I need "Mom Time" to recharge the batteries, it helps her too.

Having hung out with her spec ed classmates and helped with our local Special Olympics (she runs track), I've learned ALOT about human decency and goodness...
  • Zorba · 1 year ago
Many people are better than we think possible- this gives me hope for the human race (which, IMHO, Savage and people like him do not belong to). I am so happy to hear that your daughter is doing well, and may she continue to grow. I know that you have played a huge part in this, as well as her own determination. Be well.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
May I just say that this exchange between you, Zorba, and MElouise has been so lovely to read and both of you are right about the goodness of humans even 'tho the least among us have had the mic for so long that we've forgotten our worth. But all over the world people of good heart are working to make things better and soon the United States may again be able to rise and fulfill our obligations and expectations.

Please keep commenting here, both of you. We need your goodness.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Nastiness and ignorance is a particularly bad combination. Michael Savage doesn't know enough to be ashamed of himself, and wouldn't be, even if he did now enough. I take care of a nephew with Asperger's Syndrome (mild autism), and believe me, it is very real.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. ...

What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.'"

As usual, this reactionary asshole is really talking about himself. And speaking of a fraud and a racket, this man needs to seriously commit himself to self-examination.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
    It's so cruel, it's breathtaking.

I think some of these right wingers are sociopaths.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
I would make a distinction between right wingers and conservatives. I seriously doubt that true conservatives would support Weiner's position. However, there is no doubt in my mind that right wingers are dangerous sociapaths, psychopaths, psychotic, mentally ill and a very serious criminal danger to society. His statement that autistic children are a fraud and a racket is nothing short of a very serious social and civil crime. He is clearly advocating Hitler's final solution to these usless "burdens on society."
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
And Michael Savage is faking being a straight man.

Everyone now knows about the love letters he send to Allen Ginsburg when he was young. It's clear why Michael Savage is demented and mentally unstable - the closet does that to you. What is unclear is why radio stations keep him on the air...

Wouldn't it be nice if our media barons would provide us with radio show hosts who are... um... mentally stable? And even intelligent? Clearly that is asking too much.
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
This asswipe needs to be taken off the air. Who sponsors this crap, anyway?

No one knows what causes autism at this point, although many studies have been done. One particiular study points out the age of the father as a factor; mother's age doesn't seem to have the same effect. While the study of genetics may seem fraught with ethical considerations, it would seem prudent that we pay attention to the age we do have children. Taking risks with having a healthy child doesn't just mean avoiding alcohol, drugs and smoking by the mother. The fact is, cells in both men and women undergo changes as we age, although most attention over the years has been paid to mothers, not fathers.

    http://autism-prevention.blogspot.com/2008/05/c...

No matter what popular culture tells people, the fact is, we all AGE. We can cover it up with plastic surgery, botox and cosmetics and that's just vanity, but there is virtually nothing that can be done to every organ functioning inside as we normally get older no matter how healthy a lifestyle we have. And that includes reproductive functioning.

His sponsors are the same ones we hear on ALL the talk radio stations, including 'progressivetalk' stations in every city and air america. 90% of them all have the same sponsors...

90% of them all have the same sponsors...

It is about time you listen to the Pacifica radio network. They are sponsor free.

Jeepers, I have a 22-year old autistic son and I'm always hitting him upside of the head and telling him to shape up or I'll send him to military school.

    Nothing seems to work!!

that's funny, because my cousin is actually faking autism. no joke. he had some trouble in school as a kid, went through a lot of specialists. finally got to the point where he could manipulate the diagnosis becacuse he had more or less memorized the tests, and he settled on autism because it was so easy for him to mimic, seeing how he could go weeks without talking to his folks,
now he gets a nice check from the state of iowa every month, has a nice rent controled apartment. hangs around the university playing frisbee and what not. good times? no. great times. so my advice is, if you're going to fake an illness, autism is a lot better choice than lupis, but not as good as torrettes.
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
His show is syndicated by Jones Radio, which also owns/syndicates Ed Schultz' and Stephanie Miller's show. I didn't hear that particular broadcast, but I do listen to his show occasionally, as I like to hear what kind of crap the other side is spewing. He IS a nutcase, no doubt about it. Why don't you (we) contact the Jones Radio group (not sure of the exact corporate name of the company, but it should be easy to find) and show em some love.... If you've listened to his show on a semi-regular basis, as I have, you would've heard much worse garbage spewing from michael wiener (savage) than that comment about autism. Believe it.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Michael Savage, ignorant and intellectually challenged, is a disgrace.
The conservatives must be proud of this creature.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
so. Michael Weiner uses the name Michael Savage for his wingnut radio persona...there's your trouble.
