AMERICAblog: Portland, Oregon swears in its gay mayor

I lived in Portland for ten years before coming down to Palm Springs. I am so proud of that city!
When I first moved there, I discovered they'd taken out a freeway to put in a park (along the river). My kind of move!

Great news. Did he invite the KKK imperial wizard and agree to disagree with him?

You know, reach out to the religious conservative wing of Portland at the mayor's inauguration.
I don't think folks have mentioned that Cambridge, Mass. had an openly gay mayor, and I think also Tempe, Arizona.
Oregon has come far since the extremely dark days of Measure 9 (1992).

Portland sounds like a nice city.
They rank very high on number of vegan restaurants too.

I should start looking for a job in Portland. It's obviously a gay-friendly city.

Portland Loves Sam! For good reason too, he is also a huge advocate for alternate transportation, biking and lightrail specifically. He's looking to bring the super successful westside lightrail to the eastside, and of course connect the two sides of the Willamette. We all hope he gets it done!

Yes, Portland has been preparing for the end of cheap energy for quite a while.. We have an excellent public transportation system, Zip Cars (hourly rental cars) parked throughout the inner city, plans for a east side street car system to service the various business districts, farmers markets throughout the city, a very modern and well patronized dowtown, citizen involvement at all levels and no sales tax..... I think Portland OR is one of the most forward thinking cities in America...

Portland is a wonderful progressive city. They are indeed very forward thinking. Such a stark contrast to Seattle, their backwards-thinking, phony-liberal neighbor to the north.

Living in Seattle (and born there), I moved south to a small town to avoid ignorant people. Again, I am soooo Proud of Portland. Seattle is just closed minded to almost anything now a days. At one time we didn't judge anyone but now we have too many people from Calif and Minn and other ignorant states living here. I am over 60 and was once proud of Seattle, many many years ago

Shall we all pack up and move to Portland?

Very cool. And that's how we do it folks. There are other things to do besides move to Florida and party. Get involved, get on boards, get in local office and make a difference. The rethuglicans have been doing that for years.
I wonder if Warren belives the Mayor of Portland Oregon is a pediophile and loves incest.?
The more visible we become, the more rediculous people like Warren look, and the more irrelevent.
Kudos to the new Mayor, and the forward thinking poeple of Portland.

I don't live in Portland anymore, but I'm proud of Portland too and of Oregon in general.

Paris, Berlin, and Hamburg have gay mayors... and now Portland! Yay! Providence RI is the second largest US city with a gay mayor.

My god! They ARE taking over!
But seriously, folks....
Congratulations to Hizzoner.

You may want to amend that to say the largest city in the U.S. to have an "openly" gay mayor:

Sam Adams: Always a good decision. How much you want to bet his inaugural was avoided by every Republican in Oregon? That would be part and parcel to GOP sour grape politics. They're also avoiding Obama's inauguration. Oh, boo hoo. Don't let the door hit your fat ass on the way out.

Funny about the beer link, the Boston Beer Company, the maker of Sam Adams beer, tried to block the use of the domains samadamsformayor.com & mayorsamadams.com that were registered on behalf of the Sam Adams Mayoral campaign:
How can you block the use of someone's real name? After all, the Boston Beer Company stole an historical name, didn't they? Seems they wouldn't have a leg to stand on...

They kind of have to do it -- even if they don't want to. If you don't try to protect your trademark, it counts against you in a trademark infringement suit down the road.

Well, guess my family won't be buying beer from this damn company again. How ignorant they are!

Excellent. But read the profiles linked on the article...I was dismayed to read that he is particularly accused of venting on females and one described him as "vindictive." He does have a temper, evidently. But, all in all, sounds like he has good plans for the city. As with Obama, time will tell how much he can accomplish and how well it turns out.

Palm Springs has a gay mayor. Married with children even. (until the courts say otherwise I guess)
Their last mayor was gay and black.

When we left San Francisco in 2002, Portland was high on our list of cities to move to. The main thing that kept us from moving to Portland was the idiot in the White House.

We don' t really think of him as our "gay" mayor. It was never an issue in the campaign. Anyone who has ever met Sam knows that he will work very hard and do a great job for our beautiful city.

Tell that to the vast sea of Americans who still think that being gay is a ticket to hell and is the biggest evil on earth today... as the pope basically just said. Millions of people hate us and feel it is their duty to kill us whenever possible. So it is a HUGE DEAL for a major city to elect a gay mayor, whether its citizens know that or not. It sends a big signal of hope out to terrified kids across America whose parents have told them they are going to hell, who will end up homeless if their parents figure out that they are gay.

Well said Shirley. Living in Portland it is easy to forget that other places do not share our commitment to tolerance. After all, we just elected a Secretary of State, Kate Brown who self identifies as bisexual. We have elected a lesbian (Virginia Linder) and a gay man (Rives Kistler) to serve as Justices in the Oregon Supreme Court. And lets not forget that Silverton, Oregon elected Stu Rasmussen as the nation's first openly transgender mayor. I do hope that Portland continues to send a "big signal of hope" to those who live in places not as tolerant or accepting.

Living north of Oregon, I have to say I am proud of the city and even the state. Good for you all that voted for this guy. I don't know his stand but you have set aside ignorance toward a human being and for that you should all be proud. Congratulations Portland for leading the country.

If a 46 year old straight person was having a sexual affair with a barley 18 year old it girl it would be an issue. This is a big issue as it shows the under lining of so much stupidity. I wish these people would leave young people alone because its misguided guilt that gets them looped into it in the first place. When the cards are all laid down not so many will run for being gay.

Picked up a Book called the Canarsie Flash recently at amazon and read about really why all this ridiculous suburban manicuring is really on a slide. Been a long time waiting.
When I first moved there, I discovered they'd taken out a freeway to put in a park (along the river). My kind of move!
