This obviously eliminates him for any cabinet position. But Marshall's reasons were sound at the time' should we recognized Israel it coudlddraw the US into ME wars for generations. That has come to pass. I think we all agree that the price we have paid is worth it, but at the time I bet few Americans would have willing to take on this responsibility.

I don't think there is a problem in what he stated. However, Politics isn't a classroom, and it is especially deadly to use the dreaded hypothetical. I think that Truman did take a chance, and Marshall was thinking back then about the oil. However, The Israelis did accept partition, and the Arabs thought they would roll over the Israelis in no time flat. He is of course going to release a statement in clarifying in his previous statements.

Does anyone else feel that endless scroll-through GoogleAds between the top article and the next one are a bit ostentatious? Not even Markos does that.

Recognizing Israel was a mistake? That's a odd thing to say. What was in his Wheaties?

I don't think this Fed Ex Chair is stating recognizing Israel is a mistake, but some of the reason why Marshall and the US State Department was against recognizing the State of Israel in 1947/1948, was to get a partition deal. However, The Arabs thought they would send the Jews into the Sea with a combine of 5 Arab nations fought in the war. The problem with the talking about this in a public forum with a mass audience is that it is a pretty sensitive subject, one has to be cleared, not use nuance of Marshall's opinion at the time.
Marshall looked upon himself as above the political mudslinging, while Clark Clifford was looked upon by Marshall as some political animal when he pushed for the recognition of Israel for purely domestic reasons. Truman's former business partner also played a huge part in tilting Truman's decision. Marshall and the State Department were looking to avert a bloodbath, which they thought would happened if Israel declared independence, besides the whole US v. Soviet battle over influence in the region.
I don't think Marshall's and the State Dept.'s opinion at the time, was irrational, Truman took a calculated risk and it paid off, much like the Berlin Airlift was a calculated risk. However, Marshall and the US State Dept were trying too hard to appease the Arabs, who weren't in a concilatory mood at all. Marshall and the State Dept.'s view was that either a trusteeship or more effort for a effective partition should be followed than recognizing Israel's independence.

The question is: will the media even report this? Or does that honor just go to Obama even when it's made up crap about him and Israel?

CORRECTION JUST ISSUED by Ben Smith CORRECTION: I missed an edit in the middle of the video, which I shouldn't have posted, and have removed from above. It cut a crucial passage in which Smith said he sided with Truman in the dispute. The full transcript is after the jump, and the edit undermines the point the video is trying to make.
In the full video, Smith says that Truman made the "right decision," but that Marshall was "prophetic" -- words that still might give pause to some, but put him on the other side of the issue.

Jeff, the corporations adore him. More tax cuts, remember? And endless war while the US goes to hell economically. Corporations can always find markets elsewhere when most of us are broke as hell.

I think Marshall was right about not recognizing Israel. It was a well intentioned but racist and colonial decision. Who thought that would work?

No, Marshall and the US State Department was scared crapless that the Soviets would get the entire Arab world into its camp if the US recognized the state of Israel. This was a huge concern for some time... The problem for the US gov't, and those who wanted to delay recognizing the state of Israel was that the Arabs didn't want to negotiate, also many of the Arab states had dual conflicts, in they needed the other Arab states help, but wanted to take over the Palestine for their own territory, basically Egypt and Syria were planning to annex Palestine as their own territory.
The problem in discussing hypothetical hindsight in public during a presidential election, is that the opposition doesn't give an inch, witness the Republican hysteria about Obama's stating his uncle helped liberate Auschwitz/Birkenau. I know what the Fed-Ex Chairman Smith was trying to get at, but he needs to be careful about using hypotheticals when discussing subjects like this, because he comes across as against Israel's independence, which he isn't, but stating how he understands Marshall's position, and some of his thoughts about ongoing Arab v. Israeli conflict, still reasonates today.

Yes, Israel is a mistake. The Zionists have oppressed the Palestinians for too long.
