Uh, why are you praising a Christian nut proclaiming Obama's Christian-ness? Religion has destroyed politics. This ISN'T huge.

That seems a little odd. Are we really looking at an evangelical fundamentalist Obama? Is that a possiblity? I'm uncomfortable . . . I want a secular constitutionalist who understands and respects the separation of church and state. I emphatically do not want and will aggressively work against another shamless advocate of Churchianity.

I really don't like the sound of this. Let's hope he doesn't win over evangelicals and lose the rest of us.

I rarely talk politics at work......I was amazed when an associate blurted out during a break that he could not vote for Obama because he is a Muslim. I calmly informed him that Obama is a Christian. His response was that Obama's father is a Muslim so that makes him a Muslim. They read emails generated by the wingnuts political machine and take them as the truth. I really hope that they take time to read this book and become better informed!

I'd really prefer they weren't stepping all over each other claiming to be more 'Christian' than the other guy. I don't care about invisible cloud people and an after-life that does not exist- I want people focused on the here and now and the mess we know for certain our children are going to inherit.
This whole 'life will be better in the next world' is pure mideval bullshit and is not going to come to pass. Anyone looking for any more than the beauty and the wonder that surrounds us right now is just a greedy asshole.

YEah, you'll pardon me if I don't get all squishy about some book detailing Obama running parallels with Bush's grasp of 'faith'.
Remember, God told Bush to invade Iraq. Not exactly the kind of comparison that invites happy feelings.

The Fundies have got to think at least a little bit about lovin' a guy who's only had one wife, instead of one who's got a botoxed junkie cougar for a Sugar Mommy and who ditched the first wife at the drop of a hat.

"Faith should bear on public policy"? um, no it should not. "Shouldn't be limited to personal realms"? well yes, it should. I hope Obama can distance himself from Mansfield's interpretation. We don't need another painful lesson in how to subvert public policy with religion.

I certainly don't see anything emphasizing Obama's Christianity as a benefit. Christianity, as practiced publically by the wingers, isn't a very functional religion. I'd far rather Obama have the gumption to say his religion is his own business.

Things will not improve until the people understand they were wrong and atone. They need to have a least a partial understanding of that. Especially those who voted for McShrub twice or didn't even bother voting. Fucking 80% polled think the country is on the wrong path. WTF?

Rather: Those who vote for shrub twice and will vote for mcshrub next. Pundits like kristol are still there with the same thing although they were completely wrong. There must be self-reflection and accountability. Balance must be restored or you can forget it. Obama can't save this society until that begins to happen and happens.

I hope he's wrong.
Religion in public life results in hypocrisy, intolerance, and ideological blindness. Those pathologies are an inevitable consequence of elevating unprovable nonsense into a superior position to real-life fact, which is exactly what religious faith does.
Get the sickness of religion out of our laws and politics.

This leaves me decidedly UNDERWHELMED. I really don't feel the need or desire to have a President whose judgment is guided profoundly by some codified religious belief. Separation of church and state is a necessity no matter who occupies the Oval Office!
Haven't we already had 7+ years of this? It's turned out SO well so far. /snark

I' m hoping that some theme of the book will focus on Obama'a use of the church to fight poverty, and working for equality all through the teachings of Hopkins, Cone and Wright. Their teaching are not focused on the afterlife but what is happening now in our country.

meanwhile, Obama and Gore are both in Detroit tonight. Could this be the most anticlimactic endorsement in political history?
But, mostly, I'm thinking it will at least neutralize the fundie vote this year.

Ah does anyone in the Beltway remember that pesky thing about separation of church and state anymore? I don't give a rat's ass what Obama thinks about god or jeebus. Can someone please start teaching civics again in high schools?

Oh man. I really hope that Sen. Obama prefers the Constitution over the bible in governing. I do not want to see Obama go all jesus-squeezer on us. I am putting so much hope into his candidacy and don't want to see the rapture-ready anywhere near him or his policies or his White House. EVER. I want a strict progressive secularist who's unafraid to take on the xtian nonsense.

I hope this puts to rest the "Obama is a muslim" crap. Not that I would care if he was. I am tired of religion being an issue.

Thank heavens. It's about time progressive people take religion and Christianity away from the Repubs. For people who are so religious, they are the most hateful, self-righteous, stingy, mean-spirited bunch you can find on the face of the earth.
