If she knows more about energy than anyone in the US she should be giving talks at all the major physics departments in the country. Since nobody really knows what energy is, other than it is something conserved. Now she is also the leading Physicist in the US?

In business, when we interviewed candidates for our open professional positions, we used behavioral questioning and scoring to find the best qualified candidates. We used a process called Targeted Selection to help cut through the interviewees who had a tendency to shovel more B.S. than substance.

For each position you hire for, you find traits which are representative of the best perfomers within that position and create questions that ask for “detailed” responses that afterwards get scored based on accuracy and the candiadates actual impact on the situation/action. E.g. what doesn’t count is when people say “we” did this…

As John McCain would like me to interview him for the job, my question is as follows:

So often the GOP party references the foundational thought process of our Nation’s democracy. James Madison (a real “First Dude”) penned the following:

“The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.”

Mr McCain, given a state is investigating your choice of a VP for overstepping her use of governmental resources for potential personal reasons, can you describe a situation where you personally helped the government “oblige to control itself” and do you agree with SP’s early promise of transpanrency in the investigation? Character IS important.

Federalist Papers No. 51 James Madison

I really suspect -- based on nothing -- that John McCain is not long for this earth, and that he knows that. I think his only real goal is to go down in the history books as the 44th President of the United States, no matter how short his tenure may be. I think to accomplish that he's put himself completely in the hands of the machine that so mercilessly abused him eight years ago. I think as long as he accomplishes that end, the rest of us and the country can go to hell.

I could be the stuff of tragedy, were McCain not revealed to be such a petty man.

    Lear/Goneril '08.

(If it even needs to be said, I'm not wishing any ill on McCain. A sound defeat, yes.)
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
"I'm not wishing any ill on McCain", I wish I could be as generous as you. Considering he has agreed to sentencing thousands of people to unnecessary foreclosure while letting corporate executives skate with billions (that those who were foreclosed on helped to pay); sent more to a senseless war without reason: will give more in tax breaks to those who need it least; lies about "ties" to lobbiests, I just want him to go away.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
I suspect that McCain's entire reason for being at this point is to "best" the men that he was held up to as he was growing up... His father and grandfather... both respected Admirals... His younger years were spent being a hot-headed, impulsive, slacker, and getting away with it, because of his family legacy. So yeah, at this point going down in the history books as 44 would show them.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
John, this looks promising. It's impossible for both McCain and Palin to hide from the press much longer. I was just watching the news, don't know what station, and a Republican surrogate was asked what he thought of this so-called controversy swirling around Obama's support of children being taught about the dangers of sex predators.

The journalist pressed him on his knowledge beyond normal the rhetoric the republicans are used to answering --- and he couldn't answer!

I see a trend slowly starting to build up. Journalists are starting to press.

It's the Ambien, I tells ya! Sure he's older, but he's admittedly on Ambien, which has side-effects --more common among the elderly-- that match up surprisingly well with what look like "senior moments" from McCain.

Who do YOU want answering the phone at 3:00 AM? Me, I'd prefer the one that's not in a drug-addled haze, thanks! We can't ask foreign militants and natural disasters to wait until Preznit Sleepy-head's drugs wear off at 7:30 or 8:00.

His 72 year-old addled brain, which was never at Einstein-level to begin with, can retain 6 or 7 talking points, in his short-term memory, handed to him by Schmidt, Davis, and Rove on that day. It doesn't matter, though. In the debates, while Obama will hand him his 72 year-old sagging ass, the popular and corporate media consensus will be: how DARE that uppity upstart smartypants attempt to humiliate a war hero and POW?! What a disrespectful elitist, thinking his command of all the issues is what real, normal Americans want to see!

PHOENIX, AZ—According to campaign sources, Joseph Chappel, a 38-year-old speechwriter for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), has spent the last two weeks attempting to combine words and phrases in such a way as to not provoke a tight-jawed, dead-eyed smile from the presidential hopeful. Dreading a repeat of last month's speech to a group of businesswomen in Ohio, during which McCain followed a mention of his wife with an awkward and eerie smirk, Chappel has avoided personal anecdotes for the new speech, omitted any mention of "God" or "this great nation," and cut several phrases that had the potential to draw the 72-year-old candidate's mouth open in a horrifying display of teeth and gums.

    Ok,
Now this is why.....when you have a question or statement about Sarah Palin.....you should frame it around John McCain.....and not just focus on Sarah Palin.

    example:
"Did John McCain know about the rape kits that Sarah Palin was charging?'
"Has John McCain ever charged for per diem staying in his own home like Sarah Palin did?"
"Does John McCain think Sarah Palin ACTUALLY sold the jet on E-Bay?"

It's a way of focusing on John McCain's "judgement" and "where-with-all"

It's like killing 2 birds with one stone...or one pig and one wolf...etc....

    .
  • Webster · 1 year ago

And if it becomes too obvious and/or scandals or other health issues force him to step down from the ticket, the Repub base would insist Palin replace him as the Presidential nominee (the RNC would choose, the VP candidate does not automatically ascend). The only way i can see that not happening would be if she turned it down - and then the question would be, how can you run for VP then if you aren't ready to be President?

I was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska for 3 years. I went downtown weekly, and on frequent road trips throughout the state. I never once heard anyone speaking Russian. Actually, now that I think about it, since I have spent time in Alaska (next to Russia), as well as Germany, Italy, Canada & Mexico, I think I am FAR more qualified to be vice president than Palin. Of course I would have to be old enough and a republican.
  • LisaLV711 · 1 year ago
Then we'll crown you President! And since two of us here love Chinese and I myself love Mexican food, that qualifies us to serve in your Cabinet. What ya say?
  • fostert · 1 year ago
I live near the NIST atomic clock, so I must be an expert on time. Of course, I live even closer to NCAR, so I'm an even better expert in atmospheric studies. And my neighbor is an oil market analyst. So I really know a lot about oil. Oh, and did I tell you my sister speaks Russian?
  • adrie73 · 1 year ago
Your sister is clearly far more qualified to be VP than Palin.
  • fostert · 1 year ago
You don't even know how true that is. My sister is a very talented person. Unlike Palin, she might even be qualified to be VP.
  • shanobama · 1 year ago
    That IS the real answer.
#1. That Alaska is an 'oil' state, so Palin knows about oil which is vital to our modern national security. (This would not be the case if Reagan had continued on with Carters energy policies, of course).

Palins knowledge about oil and energy, unfortunately, is limited to how much more 'welfare' she could provide to her constituents-"I will not stand in the way of the progress of our Congressional committee", etc. This knowledge is self interested, though, so she can stay in office by keeping the Alaskans rolling in oil benefit checks.

#2. Alaska IS close to Russia.

Thats it. Sarah Palins total experience on issues of national security.
She WILL PRAY about it, though! So there you go.

At least he didnt pull something out of his ass, and was able to keep on the talking point.
I wonder what drugs he is taking? Aricept?
  • katymine · 1 year ago
So Palin being close to Russia...... actually isn't she close to Siberia? So she understands Siberia? Holy smokes that is even scarier

Ok.... I live 1.5 hour drive from Mexico..... so I must be an expert too......I was stationed in Greece for three years..... does that make me an expert?

  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
I think "agism" is going to be the new "sexism" which was the new "agism" when Palin was first announced to be McCain's veep pick. McCain is showing some serious mental wear and tear, but the GOP will attack anyone who tries to bring it up as using McCain's age as a "cheap shot." So no matter what incoherent or foolish things McCain says, to accuse him (even as a concerned citizen) of starting to "lose his bearings" will be seen as a crass attack on all aged people in general, this proud patriot/war hero/POW/leader in particular.

But at the same time, they'll demand that the media and critics go easy on McCain in the increasingly limited interviews & Q&A's McCain gives...because he is old. Best of both worlds for them - it's an attempt to curtail criticism on McCain for showing his advanced age while viciously attacking any reporter who dare broach the subject. But I mean, what's the big deal? It's only the presidency. Lighten up, you big girls.

Guarantee, if Obama makes mince meat of McCain in the debates like we all suspect he will, the right-wing attacks will be that Obama beat up an old man, and liked it. That is was too hard, and do you really want someone who's THAT much of a fighter ni the White House (after 8 years of insisting we NEED a real fighter in the White House).

The racist subtext will be less-than-subtle. Jerkholes like Hannity & Limbaugh won't equate it to a "mugging," because even they're not quite that dumb, but the lesser jerkholes, like Beck & Weiner/Savage, probably will, because they have no shame and they ARE that dumb.

"when McCain gets angry, he kind of wakes up and his answers become more coherent. ... Are we really going to have a president who's coherent and alert half the time, but the other half is confused, bumbling, and somewhat incoherent?"

If the only time McCain is halfway coherent is when he's angry, that sounds as good as a spouse or parent who is only abusive when s/he's sober. Instead of wondering why McCain doesn't try to manage his temper, we ought to consider whether he's using his anger to maintain his lucidity, and whether that can be any good for anyone.

"And, uh, she also happens to represent, be governor of a state that's right next to Russia. She understands Russia."
Sane people don't believe this, but, uh, it also happens that Republicans don't believe it. How do we know? McCain is from Arizona. Arizona is next door to Mexico. So by McCain logic McCain is the most knowledgeable person in America on Mexican immigration. But the GOP base not only rejected McCain's 'expertise-by-geographical-proximity' on the problem of illegal immigration through Mexico, but it made HIM reject his own position.
  • FNReedie · 1 year ago
Yesterday on NPR they had an interview with McCain's daughter on her new children's book. I was amazed to hear about how life on the campaign trail for them ends by 6PM (giving her time to write a book in the evening). If McCain can't handle being the road and putting in long hours, how is he going to be ready for that 3AM call? I guess he's planning another Bush term of vacation after vacation.

Seriously..please, someone correct me if they know, and know I am wrong about this but...

I've seen only briefly, once, the points made that:

    1) Drilling. The oil companies don't need offshore drilling, they have litereally hundreds if not more areas inland that they have been given the right to drill on....that most likely contain oil. The point is...

    2) The OIL companies don't WANT to drill for oil. At least didn't while the dollar was so low, because the more they get out of the ground the less it costs, and it is paid for in Dollars which also lost their value over the last two years. Meaning it is an investment to KEEP IT IN THE GROUND!

    3) The biggest problem for the last many years is refinery capacity. We haven't built a refinery in years (decades?) and that is a bottleneck that would mean even if they hit a strike...so what, refineries are running to capacity now.

I'm not 100% sure on these points, from what I can tell, there is a good chance it is correct...so anyone know?
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
The oil companies want government to build the refineries. What a bunch of smelly crap!
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
they don't even want that... it would enable them to produce a larger quantity of gas, which would lower the price of a gallon and they'd have to sell MORE to keep their profits high (the added cost of building and running more refineries added to a larger supply of gas at lower prices = less profits).

it's in their best interest to keep the number of refineries and the supply of gas where it currently is to maximize their profits. (have we really learned nothing about how oil and other corporations operate in these times of massive oil company profits? Every quarter to keep their shareholders happy, and their own pockets filled they have to beat the previous quarters numbers.)

it's really a simple supply and demand equation. Keep supply low and demand high and you can pretty much set your own price.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
    You are correct, of course.
  • bronco214 · 1 year ago
Not only have we not built a refinery in 30 years, the major oil companies have bought up small refineries and closed them. If you control the supply you can charge what you want. And we need more oil "men" in charge!

I dunno. McCain's answer kind of goes along with the repub strategy of linking national security to everything from here to the kitchen sink, because of their bogus advantage on it. The cognitive dissonance induced by them turning 911 into some kind of positive for Bush has affected a lot of people's ability to see their incompetence for what it is. "We were attacked!
