AMERICAblog: Prop 8 Boycott Called on Legendary El Coyote Restaurant

  • eagleye · 1 year ago
Thank the gods for the Internet. We now have the ability to spread the news on a story like this, and co-ordinate the response. I think we still haven't fully understood how much the web is changing our political culture. It's a good thing.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
    Amen eagleye.

Sunshine(the web) is the best dissenfectant.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
Internet, shmeternet.... I doubt many people here or across the country know where is the El Coyote is located, and why the co-owner is so vulnerable and dunderheads that a co owner boneheaded contributed to Prop 8. It is right in the middle of the Entertainment industry, besides a couple blocks down from Melrose and a neighborhood over from the Pacific Design Center.. this bonehead co-owner is sort of like the Musical Director at the Sacramento Theatre who contributed. Gays are a huge part of their business,

If I was part of the "El Coyote" management it is time to hire a PR firm, because they are going to get a huge boycott. If they were in Orange County, or they wouldn't give a crap.
  • Aman-About-Town.com · 1 year ago
We were just there the weekend before the election and toasted a couple that just got married and have been El Coyote regulars for 25 years. They seem to be willing to hear Marjorie out at the special apology lunch she's hosting today. I don't plan on going back. I'm sure her apology will be sincere, but I have better places to put my money.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
I don't understand how an apology does anything.

not aimed at you Aman, I'm just getting on my soapbox...

so... how do they put an apology? I'm sorry I gave money to a group bent on taking away from you the rights that everyone else has?

I just don't get it... and most of these people are like "I really didn't think about it" or "I didn't mean to hurt anyone".

what?!?! they didn't think about it when they whipped out a credit card and filled in all the info? They didn't mean to hurt anyone when they took away the right to solidify our relationships? They didn't think about all the people they deal with on a daily basis who this directly affected?? GLBT Family, friends, GLBT familes they know? how do you apologise to someone while admitting you gave money to take their rights away?

they didn't think... and we pay for it.

how do you apologise for that?
  • ProgressiveTroll · 1 year ago
I agree, I don't see how you can apologize for it. It's not sincere when you are afraid of losing business.
  • Aman-About-Town.com · 1 year ago
I think she's sincerely sorry her family's restaurant is losing business! :o)

Yeah, an apology really makes no difference. I've only been to the place a couple of times. I don't plan on going back. I just feel bad for my friends who have gone there for 25 years, know this woman and feel hurt and betrayed. It's generous of them to hear her out.

I don't think they should "accept" the apology either. That may seem harsh, but the "I didn't meant to" or "I didn't think about it, look into it, etc." is just a way to avoid taking responsibility for one's actions. Hmmm... when I think about it, it's sort of the opposite of an apology, which by it's nature includes taking responsibility.
  • Aman-About-Town.com · 1 year ago
I know! You're absolutely right. I expanded on this below but basically: "I'm sorry, I didn't meant to be an asshole," is actually not an apology. What would be closer would be: "I'm sorry. I'm a total asshole," because that would at least start with taking responsibility.
  • woodroad34 · 1 year ago
Like a contrite little school girl, she's apologizing for getting caught, not the fact that she knew what the proposition was for. Besides, El Coyote has possibly the most digestive impairing food around (I've had screws in my tostada from their remodeling and they just go "oops"). The cheap drinks are all that anyone goes to El Coyote for. Better to go to El Conquistador or Casita Del Campo, which also have a high gay clientele (too bad El Chavo bit the dust).
  • Aman-About-Town.com · 1 year ago
    El Conquistador! I'm so there!
  • Dwayne Decker · 1 year ago
See if they can ask her about the $1000 she gave to George W Bush back in 2004. Did she support Bush because he wanted to add an anti-gay amendment to the constitution?
  • Teddi · 1 year ago
100$$?? Check out the Idaho donors, I'm apalled by the number of 1000.00 donors from Idaho. There is a business here who donated $20,0000 Spread the boycott Idaho needs a bit of attention....most of their donors were in the thousand dollar range.
  • mmedefarge · 1 year ago
yeah, but who goes to Idaho? i think we better focus on places where there are people who will actually boycott the businesses....
  • okojo · 1 year ago
    Who goes to Idaho??/

    Hunters
Fisherman, (it is pretty good fly fishing)
    Backpackers
    Golfers (Sandpoint)
    Skiers
Micron Technology is based in Boise

the panhandle of Idaho is a really beautiful area..
  • okojo · 1 year ago
That is the LDS influence, given that the LDS pretty much controls Eastern Idaho, except for Sun Valley and Hailey.

If the Simplot family contributed, (and I don't know if they did or did not) then look at McDonalds and Micron Technology under the microscope.
  • DavidinPS · 1 year ago
The woman seems genuinely contrite, and I'm sorry her business will suffer, but this is exactly the sort of action we need to take against those who supported Prop 8. There will be another Prop 8 at some time, and we need to make people who might think about supporting it say "Shit, do I really want to go there?." If they do, fine. But his is all about telling people we are paying attention, and they can't have the courage of their convictions without having the courage.
  • mmedefarge · 1 year ago
That's the worst $100 she ever spent! I hope it will cost her 100 to the nth power in lost business.
  • DavidinPS · 1 year ago
One thing the readers need to know is that it is not only "gay friendly", it has an ENORMOUS gay clientele. One or two nights a week it is THE place to meet for gays. That's what makes the donation to Yes on 8 so hurtful.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago

  • Lolis · 1 year ago
My Mormon second cousin, Alan Ashton, gave 1 million to the Yes on 8 campaign. It is a shame because the proposition with the most money behind it usually wins.
  • eagleye · 1 year ago
A lot of people who voted 'Yes' on Proposition 8 don't have a clue why such ballot iniatives exist. It's not just about denying gay people the opportunity to marry; it's more about drawing socially regressive voters to the polls to benefit Republican candidates. If you're trying to get somebody like George Bush or John McCain elected, one of the tactics that can help is to put a socially regressive amendment on the ballot (gays, guns, abortion) for the purpose of attracting cultural fundamentalists to the voting booth. The little people who vote for this shit don't even know that they're beting scammed by GOP strategists like Karl Rove.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Exactly. Worse, yet, there are progressive Democratic politicians who can be duped into putting regressive shit on ballots thinking they are somehow protecting their sits. Then they sit there and wonder why they lost their election when busloads of haters flood the polls and vote for the fascist Republican! It happened in Oklahoma four years ago when state congressional Democrats allowed gay marriage on the ballot.
  • ProgressiveTroll · 1 year ago
This was mentioned on the previous thread, but if you didn't see Boogieman, The Lee Atwater Story, you need to see it. It was on Frontline last night, you can probably find it on their website. Republicans will never win anything without their wedge issues. Fortunately, it looks like this era may be coming to end, if we keep our vigiliance against it, that is.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
That is EXACTLY why we are yelling and protesting and shaking things up. Many, many people had no idea they were voting to STEAL the guaranteed civil rights of fellow citizens away. The deceptive and false advertising and campaigning spearheaded by the cult of latter day saints did it's job. Doesn't make it right.

Well, we're going to wake some people up! The mormon cult and others that supported this are going to learn that their contributions have consequences. You don't fuck with peoples existing rights.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
I heard something yesterday about the knights of Colombus being told they couldn't fundraise on some shopping center's property and they had to leave. This was after they got a bunch of complaints. I'll look for a link.
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
    Scott quits:

California Musical Theatre's artistic director, Scott Eckern, resigned from his post today amid controversy over a donation he made to the Proposition 8 campaign to ban gay marriage.

Eckern gave $1,000 in support of Proposition 8, a donation that sparked criticism from theater workers and the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

"We have released a statement that Scott resigned," said Chris McSwain, community affairs director for the theater company. He declined to comment further.

No. She's going to learn her lesson that it is not right to support stripping your patrons and employees of their constitutional rights.

I hope she's happy with the outcome of her measly donation. Maybe she'll consider her political donations a little more carefully in the future.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
its one thing to keep your ideals and VOTE... its another to contribute ANY amount of money to strip away rights that people already have.

it doesn't matter if its $10 or 10,000 to me... you're donating money to strip me of my civil rights. if you take the time to decide, you're obviously thinking... and if your clientele are gay, what does that say about how she really feels about them?
  • Robkillian · 1 year ago
Here is the letter I sent to El Coyote, and to the local, Washington State donors for Prop 8. As a gay father of two Mormon sons:

    So.....

I know you are under incredible scrutiny...

But, I am writing a similar letter to every supporter of Prop 8 in my home state of Washington....and those I can identify other places.

I am a father of two sons...I grew up religious and Mormon...I served a mission and when I got home it all got really complicated. I fell in love with a boy from BYU--but no sex was involved......--just the feelings and the desire and the hope he would love me back.

I went to my Bishop with these feelings.....and he blessed me for being sin free and promised me that if I married these feelings would go away and just have been a test......

I married within six months to the only girl I knew and had ever really connected with...

But, six years and two sons later the feelings had never disappeared...they had only grown stronger and they infected my life and my dreams and since God had not changed me, I felt unworthy and that I should die.....

But, I could not leave me sons....

And, after therapy and time I came out and discussed this with my wife and family... They all knew. But, had been too afraid to talk to me and did not know what to say.....

Now....sixteen years later. I am out and proud and working hard to pay the bills, to keep my love life real and to have a life full and rich and rewarding. I serve my community daily. I still feel like a missionary in the church, still. I even paid for my sons' missions...the church took my money and cashed the checks but would not let me pick them up at the end of their missions because I was not of the correct 'faith'....

Then, Prop 8 passes....and I am right back in that place where I am struggling to hold on to my relationship with my Mormon sons, my family is silent and some are true to the faith and some are not. But, my boys, my kids, the people who I believe helped keep me alive during my darkest struggles to understand what being gay and alive was all about are still very committed to their belief and their church and I still question if I have a family and if my love for them has been enough.

And, then I learn that some many strangers who want to save marriage have donated money and time and lies and such to a political campaign to interfere with my work and my love and my family.
    I blame you.

I want to scream at you. Because my kids are too young to understand that their religion is not their faith. Or, that their dad may love them and be on the right side of love rather than rules....

Shame on you....for putting your belief into discrimination and trying to exclude love from the world; from putting you money into interferring with a life long effort to keep my family in tact...

    Shame on you.

    Rob Killian,
    Seattle, WA

But I'm willing to do whatever to stop this nonsense!!! I'm open to hearing what Marjorie has to say today.

While, like others here, I would stop patronizing that restaurant, I don't think mounting a boycott over a $100 contribution would be effective. Better to focus on the big guys (LDS and KOC, and big donors). The GLBT community could partner with other groups, such as women who deserve sole control over their reproductive systems and also suffer from church propaganda.
  • Dwayne Decker · 1 year ago
I noted this below. This isn't limited to a $100 donation. According to opensecrets.org, she also donated $1000 to George W Bush's re-election campaign when he was running on an anti-gay agenda. There's no way I'd spend money at that place knowing it would be used to attack me. At the very least, Marjorie Christofferson owes her gay patrons an explanation.

Is everyone aware of the Mormon Stock Index?

"The Mormon Stock Index tries to measure the stock market performance of companies run by Mormon executives."

    http://www.mormonstockindex.com/

(DELL Computers, American Express, Black and Decker, Diebold, Novell, priceline.com, Ryder, SkyWest Airlines are just a few of the nationally known companies the Mormons themselves identify as "Mormon-run". Oh, and Marriott, of course.)

    Time to expand the boycott...

See how everyone starts to run for cover once they see that gay people are serious and will come together as a group and push back? Now imagine if all gay people let certain individuals or businesses know that if you take away gay rights we as gay people will take away your business to the best of our abilities and try to pull as many of our sypathetic friends along also.

As they profit from us they betray and stab us really bad. Now betrayal and hypocrisy has a price to pay.
  • RitornaVincitor · 1 year ago
    Good. Boycot the restaurant!

I attended a small rally in San Francisco last night and met some very nice people. A larger rally is planned for Saturday.

But I'm still thinking about last Friday's march. I was so proud. It was totally peaceful, and very moving. Thousands of us filled Market Street for many blocks. It took over half an hour for us to pass through the Castro District on our way to Dolores Park. Strangely the news coverage gave wildly different accounts of the crowd numbers. One account mentioned "hundreds", while AP called it "a thousand". The local CBS affiliate news called it 20,000. But the crowd had to be many thousands because it completely filled Dolores Park (several city blocks) and spilled over into the surrounding streets. Perhaps the divergent reports were the result of the crowd starting off small, and picking up more and more marchers and it made its way to the park. It was a very impromptu event, with word originating and spreading on the Internet. Like most, I only found out about it earlier that day.

I'm pleased also that we have protested at St. Mary's Cathedral and the Mormon Temple across the bay in Oakland. If these organizations want to fund hate, let there be repercussions. Let people start questioning their tax exempt status. Let people question their questionable histories, such as sex abuse and polygamy. Let the word "hypocrisy" be carried on placards to their doorsteps. Let them have to think about the public relations damage they will face when they dabble in the lives of those who do not belong to their faith.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
It's an open secret in circles here that SFPD estimated the crowd size as 20,000 to 25,000. Those figures were reported to City Hall. SFPD has a policy of not releasing crowd figures publicly so we will never hear an official figure.

CBS and a few other sources reported around that size. SFGate and AP have fluctuated between "several hundred" to "around 1000". What a joke! Those "several hundred" people would explain the four helicopters flying over my house for five hours last Friday evening. Oh, and I should add, my husband and I marched from Civic Center to the Castro then we came home. We knew it was ending up in Dolores Park and we figured the helicopters would leave soon. Wrong.

Apparently they are having a press conference here in LA at this moment.

Main reason I don't go there: they have CANNED REFRIED BEANS in everything they serve. ew!
  • mexiboy · 1 year ago
Guys, I'm sure you've all heard about the El Coyote issue. And while I don't dine there and have not been there in years, here are my two cents on the matter:

It's quite an unfortunate situation. It's the daughter of the owner who's a mormon, the rest of the family does not share her beliefs. In all fairness, I will not boycott El Coyote.

We need to measure our anger and really not retaliate with hate, the way the mormons have. We can't be a mirror of what they are doing against us.

EL COYOTE has gay employees among the total 100 employees that have been working there some 20 to 50 years. She acknowledges she made a mistake and that she would never hurt the gay community, but her religious belief is one thing. They are also making a substantial donation to the GAY AND LESBIAN CENTER... (I know all this because my coworker knows the owners and he was assessing them with PR stuff to manage this crisis- he is gay!)

This is a very difficult one and quite contradictory.... but are we going to boycott everyone who does not agree with our personal beliefs? Am I going to boycott all businesses that are atheists? I think not.

Again, remember, this is one person, and it was not the owner of EL COYOTE, but her daughter, the only mormon in the family!!!!

Please know that they won't go broke if it's closed down, but 100 hard-working blue collar workers will be left without a job. The family owns half a block, so quite frankly we would not be causing a dent in their pocket book, so think about that!

"Be impecable with your words" is the first agreement in the "Four Agreements" by Dr. Ruiz.

Sorry, but I will not support my community in this tyranical witch hunt... we need to be reasonable, sensible and first and foremost not react inhumanely, like the Mormon Church has against us.

OK, those are my 2 cents.
  • foxy · 1 year ago
It doesn't matter...sorry guilt by association. NO MORE MR. & MRS. NICE GAY. Get it?
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
Can we just boycott them because of the CANNED refried beans.

We'll tell them we will stop the boycott if they make their own beans.

Let's see what else do I want?: Oh yeah! FREE margaritas if you kiss a boy!
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Well, if Marjorie Christoffersen isn't one of the co-owners of El Coyote but merely a relative of one of the co-owners then no, they shouldn't be boycotted.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
If the owners of El Coyote gets a good PR firm, get statements out like you just had written, they should be okay..

It is easy to go after those who are close by like the Fairfax district, then it is go to the places like Agoura, Thousand Oaks or Orange County, and make an affect.

People are angry, and anger at times means immediate reaction without much thought, much like I think boycotting Utah is a dumb move.

However, The owners of "El Coyote" have to do some serious damage control, and work hard to fix a this problem, even it is a $100 contribution and from a family member.
  • fedupinsandiego · 1 year ago
A PR firm cannot undo this screw up, and the press conference demonstrated that fact pretty effectively. This may be LA, but this situation is not about some tweaked has-been actress in a fender bender, this is a restaurant insulting its client base by donating to the very oppressors that cost us our rights. Even Swifty Lazar would tell them they are f**ked.

I don't think boycotting Utah is a dumb move at all...I just drove to see my kids in Denver from San Diego and NEVER entered the creepy state of Utah. The last time I was there there were wackos everywhere wearing Children of the Corn outfits in the restaurants and snide stares. Thank God I'm 6'5" and could pass for straight, but there is an intimidating vibe I get everytime I am there, especially if you are from another state, and even worse if you are in a nice car and your license plates are from a "Blue state". . Guess Utah has two industries, tourism and hatred. And they are now exporting that hatred over to California politics.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
"Swifty" Lazar was showbiz agent, he wasn't in PR. Yes, a PR Firm can help undo the mess, if the Restaurant has a sensible line of attack, mainly the family member who contributed isn't doing day to day operation, they contribute to the legal defense fund to fight this, they contribute to local projects for GLBT etc. "Apology" lunches don't cut it. They have lots of work to be done to repair this damage.

Besides your delusional thoughts that because you have a CA license plate you are discriminated against., no one in Utah or other conservative states don't give a flying shit about your license plate. Hellooo.... a "Blue" state passed prop 8... fancy car and CA license plate? dude, no one cares. If you had bumper stickers as "I believe in the Mountain Meadow Massacre" and you park the car for a long period of time in Provo, than maybe something will happened.

I actually travelled through many of these states where you think "Children of the Corn" mentality are prevalent. (Also in "blue" states, given Eastern Oregon is as looney and conservative as any place in Utah or Idaho) Some lovedd their guns, they are kind of isolated, and most of the time, they feel kind of neglected by the economic and cultural centers on the West Coast. Some of these people are decent, some are liberal, but none liked to be labelled or put into one group.

Utah is a much more diverse state, than people realize. Summit County voted for Obama in 2008, and Salt Lake City almost went to Obama, (it was pretty close) Boycotting Utah is stupid. Boycotting the LDS and its holdings are different, and legitimate compare to their getting their church members to donate a huge amount of money to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign. Utah has more industries than tourism and hatred, and many in the tourism industry in Utah are not exactly fans of the LDS. Go to Park City, and find one of those "drinking clubs" instead of bars, and you will get an earful about the LDS. Fight the LDS, Utah is different.

There is an ugly LDS temple in La Jolla, Are you going to boycott all of La Jolla? No, because you know that La Jolla isn't all about the LDS.

Not playin' here... I am in PR, I know my business. And my coworker is an experienced PR professional (New Yorker) and very good at what he does... Press conference took place this morning but don't know the outcome yet. The point, PRmexiboy, is that actions have consequences. What? This women only stuck her blade one inch into our backs, not all the way, so that doesn't matter? bitch please...

take your condescending ass somewhere else with that "end of story" crap. You don't decide for anyone else but yourself when a 'story has ended'. Let's see, how much campaigning and outreach did you do in the latino communities to prevent them from making an uninformed decision? I bet none... Nothing is incosequential, if they donated money to support a proposition that promotes bigotry and discrimination they they need to be made an example of, regardless of how small or large their contribution might have been.

How classic is that! A measly 100 donation could cost Ms Marjorie hundreds if not thousands more! HA!
  • zavlin · 1 year ago
Come on guys, what is this, mccarthyism? Are we going to go on a witch hunt finding anyone who donated a buck to this thing and try to black list them? How about we blame the real source of the problem here: the voters were not convinced, the campaign against prop 8 FAILED. Lets stop trying to scapegoat the donors and take responsibility for an opposition that was flat during the campaign. Attacking the donors is not going to get rid of prop 8, this is really stupid.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Oh, now we're not supposed to be mean to the donors that helped fund the deceptive and false advertisements?

I have to ask, did you get married to a same-sex partner here since June? Did you have the voters attempt to take away your rights and actually strip away a lot of people's rights? Are we supposed to just shut our mouths and do nothing? Screw that. Elections have consequences.
  • zavlin · 1 year ago
Well, let me know when throwing more barbs and trying to stifle others results in getting marriage rights back.
  • zavlin · 1 year ago
And i want to emphasize: This issue needs some strong campaigning and clear messages right now but that message should NOT be "hey you! you donated 10 dollars to it! now you will paaaaaaayYy" Its losing sight of the issue, and Its going to give the opposition some serious ammo.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
The California Supreme Court will be the ones making the ruling bringing marriage equality back. In the meantime, those that tried this stunt are going to have to deal with the blowback.
  • gwyneth · 1 year ago
Oh we will! It will be in your face when the Supreme Court rules it as unconstitutional.
  • mexiboy · 1 year ago
Thank zavlin... agree with you, except for the MAJOR DONORS, like the Mormon Church! LOL

This is far from over, but let's go after those that matter most... :}~
  • mexiboy · 1 year ago
The problem with No on Prop 8 campaign is that they were preaching to the choir... they did not go after the influential constituencies of the African American and Latino voters, sorry, but it's the honest truth. You don't have to get the gay community behind you, HELLO! they're already there, you have us! They missed our potential allies with clear, concise and factual messages... Let's not pass blame here, it's done. Now we have to take the high road and fight it via legal means; there is HOPE!
  • Chrissy · 1 year ago
Ummm.... they did. There were protests in Latino areas of LA and at the heavily latino attended Catholic Church downtown.
  • mexiboy · 1 year ago
Not enough... I monitored Spanish-speaking television, and it was not enough. I know media, Latinos get their news on TV and radio, and there was not enough outreach. Protests are not enough, I'm afraid... sorry!
  • dula · 1 year ago
Just what exactly is this magical "outreach" of which you speak? I knew when I was a child that hating people who were different from me was just plain wrong. These ignorant 'church' people who voted for this have been brainwashed by their leaders and no amount of begging for our rights is going to change that.
  • mexiboy · 1 year ago
Education opens minds. Ignorance breeds hate, hate breeds violence... don't underestimate religious people. Just trying to be a voice of reason here. That's all. I am optimistic about human kind, that's all dula!
  • dula · 1 year ago
That's fine, but being hopeful doesn't require you to be a doormat in the meanwhile.
  • fedupinsandiego · 1 year ago
I agree!! Thanks for standing up!! If the Mormon daughter wants to be a sheep, let the boycott begin.
  • Scar · 1 year ago
It's not just the $100 that's the issue.

As a Mormon, isn't she supposed to give 10% of her earnings to the Mormon "church?"

My understanding is that she is the neice of the original owners, who are no longer living. I have been there many times, as recently as Monday October 10, over the last 33 years. The place receives significant income from the gay community. If that income is being tithed to the Mormons, I 'll go elsewhere.

There are so many great mexican restaurants all across Los Angeles. After hearing that an owner of this one would actively deny me the right to marry my partner of 17 years...sorry, I cannot go there again. And I'm asking everyone else not to go there either. I heard she shed a tear outside her restaurant. And that does sadden me, but the bottom line is that she participated in making me a second class citizen. That is FAR worse than anything she might be experiencing now. Fellow Angelenos, Boycott El Coyote !

You don't even know who voted for and against Prop 8. You shouldn't. It's cal DEMOCRACY. Strangely, We all have a Freedom to Vote.. in privacy even. More of us voted for than against. 29 other states voted against gay marriage also. We're everywhere. You can't run away from us. We are the majority. Hold your breath. You're breathing the same air that we do. Take a pill. You live on the same planet that we live on.
  • skeptic · 1 year ago
For the record, if you want some good Mexican food, try Granada in Burbank. It is across from the Costco and the food is excellent. Makes El Coyote food taste like dog food, although my dog would not eat their food. He has much better taste than that as he was raised properly knowing what was good and what was crap.

Here's an account of the El Coyote press conference that happened earlier today...

    http://shutupiknow.blogspot.com/2008/11/el-coyo...

It was a disaster. Management said they were donating to Lamda Legal and the Gay and Lesbian Center. But the manager who started this mess said she would not contribute to the effort to reverse Prop H8.

Quote: "One of the (daughters?) started yelling at everyone telling them (and I quote) "The church just tells you when to donate, it doesn't tell you how to vote. It very, very rarely tells you how to vote." ... "Marjorie is your friend-" at which point someone prominently yelled: "SHE IS NOT MY FRIEND. FRIENDS DON'T HELP TAKE THE RIGHTS AWAY OF OTHER FRIENDS AND THEN BLAME IT ON THEIR CHURCH!""
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Oh my. That whole affair sounds like it went over like a turd in a punchbowl.

Yeah. This was supposed to be a friendly brunch, but nobody stayed for the food.

Just driving down the street and saw an AT&T service truck with a Yes on 8 bumper sticker. I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture. If anyone wants it or has an idea of who I should send it to that would be great. I'm not sure where AT&T stood on this, but even if it's just the driver, it's a problem!

Who in their right mind would ever got to this dive anyway? It's a place in L A you try once or twice when you are very young and then if you are lucky enough to not get sick from the nasty food and unless you remain some pathetic scenester, you are, like, so over it.

I heard back from friends who went to the open lunch with Marjorie today. In a nutshell, it didn't go well, and the boycott is on... like Donkey Kong!
  • fedupinsandiego · 1 year ago
I am one of the many folks who were legal married, myself in San Diego, on 10/17/2008. I will never take my wedding ring off. And I have a whole new image of the Mormon and Catholic Church religion(s) and it is not one of decency or love. Haters, liars, distorters, oppressors.

It may have been the Moron Mormon daughter who made the contribution, but the owners should have known what was going on. I run a business and I know what contributions are being made with my company revenue;, the folks at El Coyote should have as well. They already knew that they had a religious zealot in house, so they should have kept her in check. Their business depended on that, otherwise they should leave the cash register door open and walk away for people to help themselves. She may ultimately end up ruining their business. I definitely won't be back.

Down in San Diego, the gay community is already picketing and boycotting contributors to Prop Hate like Hoehn Porsche/Mercedes-Benz/Acura/Infiniti/Mazda/Audi, in Carlsbad, CA and The Grand Hyatt Manchester Hotel chain in San Diego and LaJolla, and conventions have already been lost by the hotel chain, per the San Diego Union Tribune.. Gays need to use the power of the boycott more effectively. I go up to LA (Montebello) regularly and I will never eat at El Coyote again, no matter what lame excuse is offered. I never will see another movie at a Cinemark Theaters. either.
For God's sake people, don't make excuses for people who work against our causes. Don't patronize businesses owned by these creeps. Boycotts worked like magic against the Coors Beer folks long ago and they can work again. Aman_Chaudhary: you are right!!!! The boycott is on like Donkey Kong!!!

    To FedupinSanDiego-
I was born and raised in San Diego. Beautiful Place! Keep it beautiful. You keep that union ring on if you'd like. As a business owner, it's none of your business what your employees are donating to. Marjorie made her donation and listed the company she works for as indicated. I know. I did the same. Your employees could do the same as well. It's their freedom. To know- would be some kind of peeping Tom harrassment thang. What control you infer, suggestive of a commi government ruled by gays. Hmm. Didn't know Big Brother was a Flaming Gay Guy. Be Careful the Gestapo you suggest and would depend on may turn on its oppressive gay public. Sieg Heil
  • fedupinsandiego · 11 months ago
San Diego's loss is San Diego's gain. The great news is that you DON'T live
in San Diego, therefore it will be very easy to keep beautiful. You can
donate to whatever pathetic and specious cause you like, I never suggested
anything to the contrary, just don't whine when your little business
suffers or fails. FYI: It IS my busines to know if someone is oppressing me
with my own dollars spent in a business, and although much to your cause's
chagrin, I still DO HAVE a choice to refuse you my patronage. Typical
GOP/neo con play-book: personally attack anyone you disagree with by
questioning their patriotism. Bet you are sad about the rest of the
    election, too...

BTW: I wouldn't call anyone a "Gestapo" given the Mormon and Catholic
churches' history, and "Big Brother" is not a "Flaming Gay Guy" but a
pathetic group of busy-bodies and haters just like you.

The "Peeping Tom harassment thang" (sic) as you characterize, really seems
to be the Yes on Prop 8's mantra.

The "commi (sic) government ruled by gays" might be an improvement after
the theocracy attempt of government rule that you and your cause has
    prescribed.

I am not a communist and I DO BELIEVE in the free enterprise system, and my
purchasing choices will not include this establishment. Deal with it. You
all got caught with your hands in the cookie jar and now you are all
defensive. Be PROUD of your choice to discriminate; embrace it, and live
with the choice. There are no "do overs" when you commit an act of
discrimination against gay Americans while accepting their gay dollars.
Wasn't too many years ago, women just like you couldn't even vote, own
property, (or a business) or even apply for a loan without a man co-signing
just because you possessed a uterus. You need a wake-up call or some
Aricept. Your memory and intellect appears to be failing.

Marjorie, you do that "Seig Heil" very convicingly, God knows you and yours
    have had ample practice.

I used to eat at El Coyote maybe once a month. Many of my friends eat there more often. However, that has all changed now. I will never set a foot in that restaurant again. And...I will make a point to tell everyone I know not to go there either. The owner has her right to speak her mind against my right to marry my loved one. I also have my right to speak to everyone I know not to patronize her restaurant. And trust me, I shall. I shall.

What is this a witch hunt? We're not in Salem anymore, Dorothys.

Give some respect to Marjorie for standing up for her long-time beliefs. She doesn't hate gays neither does her chuch. It's evident from her words and her actions. She just doesn't think it's necessary to redefine "marriage." Call it something else. New union- New term. (Atleast Marjorie didn't throw her long-time church under the bus- like our new and improved President Elect Obama did and promised he would Not!) We Love You Marjorie!!

Albertsons and Lucky go married. Find a better term. It's overused.
