AMERICAblog: Real Estate Downfall

  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Its the culmination and fruition of George W. Bush's and Republican's OWNERSHIP SOCIETY and they shoved that crap down our throats every other day! Remember the whole stupid narrative about how all Americans need to own a piece of America? Don't let Republicans forget THEY CAUSED THIS!

Now the rest of us have to dig out. AGAIN!

    Michael Moore explains it perfectly:

I'll skip Michael Moore--you said it quite well.

A book on planning titled the "Geography of Nowhere" makes the assertion that land speculation, development and government infrastructure projects to support the development form the real economic engine of America. It's not autos, or oil, or agriculture. .. its land development. A little scary to see it come apart.

Pretty funny to watch, but not so funny if you were scammed and just looking for something to own instead of giving your rent money to someone else, like so many people try to do. Real estate agents and mortgage companies have a lot to answer for.

Meanwhile, the Obama daughters are going to Sidwell Friends School. Cost: $30K per year per child, but good for them--they will need a protective atmosphere and Sidwell is well experienced in security for president's kids; I expect it's on the taxpayers' dime as well. But wow, it is beyond my comprehension that some people can afford to pay that kind of tuition when many don't even make that in a year. After 40 yrs of working, I finally made $36K during the 90s as a paralegal (including bonuses). Since then, it's been downhill, LOL.

Wait a second. Obama's daughters would probably go to schools like that no matter what. You have to remember, their parents are both VERY ACCOMPLISHED attorneys. Sending one's kids to private schools is not that unusual, and is DEFINITELY not unusual for a President to have his kids go to private schools like that. You can't be developing a resentment over Obama's daughters going to school there? Surely not.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
No, not them at all. I expect the president's kids to be well protected; it would be a disaster for them to go to public school in DC. I've just never had money, and when I hear the price tag on things some people pay for, it's just sort of a shock. : )

Kind of off topic but did anyone catch Larry Craig's INCREDIBLY CREEPY homage to Senator "Uncle Ted" Stevens featured yesterday on MSNBC's "Countdown" and "Rachel Maddow's" show? Anyone have a clip of that? Its priceless... Larry Craig brought up "Uncle Ted" having an airport named after him, etc. Senator Craig proves how deep in denial he is every time he opens his mouth (pleasure organ). I just know the Senate Republicans are desperate for Craig to get his closeted but obvious gay ass back to Idaho.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
Didn't see that, but did think the whole "crying staff" and such was incredibly offensive, Stevens being a convicted felon and all. But, I guess that's DC privilege for you. You or I would already be in jail in OK or NC waiting for sentencing...

Don't know who did this but I suspect survivors of the holocaust wouldn't find it funny.

Everyone seems to disagree with you.
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
John, actually most of the comments are totally unrelated to the subject. But to the point: people disagreeing with me doesn't mean I'm wrong.

My first instinct was that it is a brilliant piece of work - and it is - but that doesn't mitigate the fact that holocaust survivors are very sensitive to any attempt to make light of "The Fuhrer." Doesn't mean it isn't worth airing, given an appropriate disclaimer.

Americablog is my favorite blog and I respect and agree with 99% of what is posted so I hope you won't get defensive on me just because of one negative post from me.

BTW did you get relief from the sinus headache? Don't know whether you saw it but I recommended a neti pot. I got one in January and haven't needed meds of any kind since. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8sDIbRAXlg. It takes about 3 min./day and I think that's a fair trade off.

    Keep up the good work.

I wanted to let you know about a documentary coming to the IFC Theater in New York City on Wednesday December 3rd through December 10th, 2008.

The End of America, directed by Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern,(The Devil Came on Horseback and The Trials of Darryl Hunt) is an expose of the significant policy changes initiated under the Patriot Act.

Based upon the best-selling book of the same name by Naomi Wolf (author of The Beauty Myth), the film makes the case that American democracy is being threatened. Wolf investigates parallels between the state of our civil liberties and those of dictatorships, fascist regimes, and other once-free societies. Wolf discusses a number of deeply unsettling similarities — from the use of unofficial paramilitary organizations and secret prisons to the targeted suspension of the rule of law.

The End of America details the ten steps a country takes when it slides toward fascism. The film follows Wolf as she takes a historical look at trends in once-functioning democracies from modern history that are being repeated in America today, and puts the recent gradual loss of civil liberties in the U.S. in a historical context. "The average American might not be alarmed at AT&T selling our private information to the Bush administration, but when this action is seen as part of a larger series of erosions and events, a pattern emerges with unfortunate consequences that become disturbingly clear."

The film's style is similar to that of An Inconvenient Truth in that Wolf presents a lecture, filmed with multiple cameras, to an interactive audience. Break-away segments featuring both talking-head and "fly on the wall" interviews demonstrate the historical echoes and present-day consequences of the erosion of America's Constitution. These interviews are from a diverse collection of individuals, including intelligence community top brass, who are willing to talk on camera about the uselessness of "intelligence" gained through torture. The film also features grassroots political leaders, military generals, and victims of undermined civil liberties.
