AMERICAblog: Religious right "virginity pledges" do not work

  • Older_Wiser · 12 months ago
All of that is nothing but a reprise of 1950's "morality" which is being shoved down the throats of 21st century young people. I know, I was a teenager during the 50s. There were probably more shotgun weddings during that era than anyone knows. I was in one of those which only lasted 3 years. We had no education on birth control, either--it was taught as evil; hell, sex was evil and dirty and "true love" was romanticized, idealized. What a crock to feed teenagers whose hormones are raging...a lie, an abomination.

Even though I had given birth to 3 children by the age of 22 since no doctor gave me advice about birth control except for the dreaded diaphragm (even though birth control pills were available). I was not allowed a tubal ligation (a permanent fix) for 10 more years since doctors wanted to preserve my reproductive functions. I didn't know my own mind, they said. As for abortions, forget it...you had to go to the shady side of town and often died for lack of medical treatment. Many desperate women suffered for all of it.
  • SCLiberal · 12 months ago
I'm so very lucky. Back in 1988, when I was 30, I had a female doctor. I had never been married and wanted a tubal. My female doctor said "No problem" and I got what I wanted! I wish so many other women had been given the respect that I received.
  • lauram · 12 months ago
I suspect the percentage of women who have their decisions respected with a woman doctor is higher than the percentage with men doctors; at least as it relates to reproductive decisions.

Apologies for posting this again but it's worth repeating...we have, due to our photo biz, several Dallas male escorts as clients and friends. Rentboys. Male hookers. You can call them whatever you like. Most of them are very silent about their clients because that is their trade: discreet and available/convenient. Some combine legit RMT massage with erotic massage. Some are just plain prostitutes. The busiest week they've ever had in Dallas was in 2001 when the Southern Baptist Convention was in town. Our buddy Gregg had to call in reinforcements from Houston and Austin to cover all his bookings that week. The 2nd busiest week was that same summer when the Conference of Catholic Bishops was in Dallas. Gregg told us that he made nearly a half a year's income those two weeks. Rates were doubled. And there were MANY orgy set ups where three or four rentboys were hired to do three or four Baptist bigwigs. The hypocracy is disgusting.

Personally think that virginity is a value to be encouraged, but that sex is natrual. The wrongness of the Fundamentalist postion is that they put a morality judgment on those who fail, but ignore it when it comes to their own. Only evil, wicked, liberals and atheists are promiscuous outside of marriage and they joyfully damn them to hell but say nothing about the failings of their own. Palin's daughter is a case in point. Personally, I'd rather not see her marry that boy as he stikes me as very immature, selfish, self serving kid. The marriage probably won't last and will be a rather bad, abusive relationship while it exists. Only real purpose is to advance Sarah Palin's political career which is a bad reason to force those kids to get married and is unlikely to benefit the new child. This also demonstrates the hypocrisy of Palin and her right wing Fundamentalism. Rather than serving God as they claim, they use God to serve their own agenda.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 12 months ago
Caribou Barbie was probably the biggest political blunder in a century. The whole scam of marrying off the preggers daughter to hockey pretty alaska trash was merely some spin they came up with to try to make Palin palatable. And fortunately it did not work. Caribou Barbie will merely sit on the ash heap of bad political choices. If they push her in '12, Obama will sail to a second term. Unless of course he gets head in the Oval Office or something.

Taking the virginity pledge or pretending to take it can be a handy put-down. Imagine you're at the bar, a troll hits on you and you say, "Oh, that's sweet but I've taken the virginity pledge and I'm saving myself for marriage." That's a charming thing to say when what you mean is "No way in hell, Troll!"
  • voicewithin · 12 months ago
Lunatic right? Possibly! How about lunatic left or lunatic center? How about just plain old lunatic...

"Taking a pledge doesn't seem to make any difference at all in any sexual behavior," So everyone is totally absent of morality?

"No surprise here and I'm sure the lunatic right will do their best to ignore the results."

Unfortunately, ignoring facts and evidence is what fundamentalists do best.

I had the interesting experience of going to Baylor University in Waco, Tx. It was a Southern Baptist school and had strict curfews for women and lots of pious mission statements. It also had the highest rate of unwed pregnancies in the Southwest Conference (a group of schools including University of Texas, SMU and University of Arkansas). Baylor girls were known as the most promiscuous around.

Nowadays they would be the same ones who take "virginity pledges".

"...and I'm sure the lunatic right will do their best to ignore the results."

Just as they ignore the fact that the "war" on drugs doesn't work; the "war against terrorism" doesn't work; deregulation doesn't work; privatizing public works doesn't work; on and on and on. They should have an ostrich for a party symbol rather than an elephant.

Admitting it means that good Christian mothers' prayers about their daughters virginity go unanswered. That doesn't do anything to bring in more 'faithful'
  • rextrek1 · 12 months ago
well its no wonder considering America has been so dumbed down these past 8 years under the republicans....kids today DON'T think that Oral sex is sex, or anal sex is sex......as long as you don't POKE the Vagina.."wa-laaa you're still a virgin"......Needless to say - ad religion into the mix and you get Brainwashed imbeciles! Well rounded SEX ED SHOULD BE MANDATORY!!!! I swear it seems that we (class of 79) had better sex ed then exists today!
  • Scott · 12 months ago
This "virginity pledge" bullshit is nothing more than another excuse for "christian" men to yap about their favorite subject, but to minors.

I don't know which one is creepier and pervy: "virginity pledges", or father-daughter "purity balls".
  • truebluecoondog · 12 months ago
Definately the "purity balls" thing. Hands down.
  • EmGD · 12 months ago
You're supposed to supplement the purity pledges with constant watching of Leave It To Beaver and Novocaine shots to the groin. The theory behind the pledges is correct, the execution has been off. I say say we spend the next seven years and $10 billion a month trying to solve the problem of why trying to get teenagers to ignore everything their body is telling them doesn't work.

  • truebluecoondog · 12 months ago
So, basically what this is saying is that abstinence is a contributing cause in STD transmission and premarital sex among teens. Wait, that can't be right.
  • Attila the Blond · 12 months ago
And those creepy Chastity Balls for daughters pledging chastity before marriage publicly to their fathers. Some complete with fathers giving daughters rings.

How creepy are those events? A bit like those cults where men marry children who don't even know what it means. Those events give the vile appearance of trotting out one's own kid for one's pedophile pals to ogle and prey upon. Seems just one step away from female children as dad's chattle, shown off in a ring not unlike how cattle is shown for sale. Or how the radical, fundamental religious cultures segregate their females from the opportunities of life.

Kids grow up, work on becoming independent from parents, have lives. Some parents just don't want to let go in healthy stages, so they ramp up unnatural control on kids. Nature will ALWAYS win that battle, so parents might consider arming their darlings with real information so they may make informed choices.

Ah-HA! there's that 'choice' word again. There might be a gene that makes one despise any choice available to another, but that's a different can of worms.
  • AdmNaismith · 12 months ago
Plus, straight teens are having more butt-sex (cause it's not real sex and they remain virgins /end disbelief/), and gay teens are having vagina sex and making babies to prove they are hetero (so that's where all Teh new Gayz come from!).

This abstinence-only shit has to stop. Watch the Penn & Teller Bullshit episode on Abstinence Education to see how truly fucked up these 'teachers' really are and how tax money is being given away to absolute kooks.
  • Mark in Florida · 12 months ago
Say it ain't so joe! Really? I don't believe it.
  • teatime · 12 months ago
I signed an abstinence pledge in middle school. We had "sex ed class" called "changes and choices" and I don't remember a damn thing about it except for the teacher (who was married and preggers, BTW) giving us each a construction paper heart and then walking us through a scenario where you date/sleep with several men and each time they break up with you a little piece of your heart gets ripped off and you're left with a tattered, ugly shred. At the time I was thinking, "Wow, this is sick." When it came to the end of the class, the pledges were passed out and I figured I should sign mine or people would think I was a big slut. I hadn't slept with anyone, and didn't until I was over 18 and in a healthy, committed, long-term relationship with a man who I have discussed marriage. Somehow the girl who didn't believe in purity and took pains to educate herself about her own sexuality and safe sex despite fairly useless classroom programming ended up doing a better job at right-wing values than girls unarmed by a lack of real information about their bodies, the mixture of feelings that goes along with deciding what is best for you, and how to know a guy is a keeper or a user.
  • cowboyneok · 12 months ago
Bristol surely took that virginity pledge since she is a Talibangelical. Isn't she supposed to get stoned or something? I mean since the gays can't get married because of Leviticus then we can't be allowing any unwed mothers to be having kids out of wedlock!
