With greatest gratitude I compliment you on a remarkably funny posting. It is hoped that you will indulge me in the copying and pasting of that post to everyone in my email directory. May the god of mercy shine upon you and may you be in heaven knee deep in 72 Virgins before Allah knows you are dead
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
I just noted below the post that someone, somewhere, came up with the initial idea - I just took it up and spiced it up with more actual text from Nigerian spam solicitations (well I added a bit more to the substance as well). Not sure sure whose idea it was originally.

This country, economically, is in deep doo-doo, and there are imbeciles out there, who still want to vote for the same. When the two oilman stole their way into the WH, the sheep applauded, saying that Bush and Cheney were two businessman, and hey, George had an MBA!!! Fat lot that MBA did to this country.

If the war criminals did not start this bloody war, we would have had more money, to save this country, no?

It certainly pays to be Treasury Secretary if your former firm is a brokerage house, a new study says.

Goldman Sachs Group — formerly run by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and Morgan Stanley, stand to be among the biggest beneficiaries of a $700 billion US bailout.

F'ing Hilarious! Only one problem - where are all the misspelled words?
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
Republicans are going to say they're "against" a bailout.

If the Democrats had tried to stop this when they gained control of Congress they'd be accused of causing this mess and the Republicans would have obstructed any reform anyway. Instead, the Democrats are blamed because they DIDN'T try to stop it and blamed for trying to correct it.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
government cannot correct this problem. it is too big. only the market solves, though brutally and painfully, solves the problems caused by poor business practices and greed. Government should come in and clean up the mess once the market takes its toll. Otherwise the problem will linger and become more, much more pervasive and severe.

Simly put, government cannot prevent the monster from emerging from the closet.

I and my fellow taxpayers will remit the requested $800,000,000,000 to YOUR bank account without delay, Dr. Minister of Treasury. I trust You and Your ideological brothers implicitly.

Your reputation with deregulation speaks for itself. Deregulating the S&L industry and energy markets and declining to regulate hedge funds worked out so well! Charles Keating, Ken Lay, and the principals at Long Term Capital Management spoke very highly of you.

Before we remit the payment to your account, may I ask one small favor, a prerequisite and necessary condition to complete the transaction? Would you be so kind as to affectionate kiss the buttocks of my fellow citizens and me?

I see absolutely nothing funny about this. This is nearly exactly what the Bush administration is pulling off with the exception that Bush has added, "Rush, rush, rush! Must respond in 5 days or the opportunity will go away." Also have no oversight by courts, Congress, etc. Bush will pull this off because everyone laughs and thinks it is a joke. It isn't a joke. Bush has pulled of this scam again and again, and all people do is laugh. The second the complicit Congress run by Pelosi and Reid pass this, they will grab the money and all of them, including Pelosi and Reid will be on Air Force One headed for Paraguay. Stop laughing and get angry. Throw these crooks in jail now.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
GRRRR, can't take it anymore. The hearing, which I have been following all morning, is going nowhere. Same questions over and over, same answers. This hearing is going in circles and doesn't seem to, at least at this point, be getting anywhere. Paulson wants the money, Senators want some restraints.

The Dems are eventually going to cave AGAIN. The hearing, in IMHO, just a dog and pony show to cover their collective asses during re-election cycles
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
If the dems cave and Obama caves with them, Obama will not win the White House imho.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Why? You think McCain will win just because Obama is a DEM. There will be plenty of Republicans voting for this bail out. I don't see how this will just affect Obama.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
As posted elswhere, The undecided voters are primarily made up of those that detest government spending and big governement. The repubs' argument all along, whether right or not, is that the dems stand for big government and higher taxes, while repubs stand for limiuted government and lower taxes. This the argument that allowed Reagan to transform the landscape in 1980 and the republicans have been riding this pony to victorty ever since.

A dem Congress passing this bailout feeds this argument big big time and will sway indepnendent voters to McCain and the repubs if he and the repubs oppose the bailout, and they will., Moreover, it allows McCain a way to break away from Bush and link Obama to Bush and the DC power brokers in support of this the most iportant issue since Iraq.

Lastly, Obama is already saying the cost of the bailout will not allow allow of his iniitatives to proceed as planned. Without these initiatives, Obama loses appeal.

Change? No we cannot because I voted to bailout Wall Street.

    Watch wait and see.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
I hope Obama comes out against the bailout. I think it could only strengthen his political hand.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Paulson sure does not want crddit default swaps subject to any regulation, unlike cox of the SEC.

Hmmmm. I wonder how much credit default swap exposure or busniess Goldman Sachs has?
  • bill__free · 1 year ago
Paulson more or less is saying that no one, be it courts or congress can have any recourse to anything he does.
Isn't that the same as saying that I am going to do things that courts & congress won't approve?
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
I think Paulson backed away from that today saying that it was up to Congress to determine the appropriate level of oversight. the question remains why the proposal expressly said not oversight or court review. the proposal should have left the oversight question left up to congress as they deem appropriate. This looks like a take or leave it executive power grab by BushCo designed to make this thing DOA or pass as is. we will see.

damn... so much for that Lamborghini I put money down on.

the joys of the ARM loan.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
why do I have a feeling that a lot of those Nigerian scams originate at AIG?
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
    From firedoglake:

White House Deputy Press Secretary Tony "Fratto insisted that the plan was not slapped together and had been drawn up as a contingency over previous months and weeks by administration officials. He acknowledged lawmakers were getting only days to peruse it, but he said this should be enough."
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
so essentially... every time chimpy said the economy was doing well... he knew it wasn't, and was hoping that his words of inspiration would shore up the market?

  • cybergal619 · 1 year ago
    Outstanding post, John!
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
After hours of watching the hearing the only pertinent question i heard came John Tester. After a lead in detailing the past bailouts and looming knowledge of AIG failure, Tester asks "why does Congress only have 1 week to address this issue"

I want to know the answer to that also. This financial melt down has been looming for months and YET the Bush administration wants Congress to address this mess in ONE WEEK?
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Short, sweet, simple and exceptionally effective.

Senator Tester should be showing up soon to repose this rather obvious question.

I have scads and scads of money. I keep winning the Microsoft UK email lottery.

I win every day. I have incredible luck.

I can float you all till my next payday. Wait, lemme check my email.

    Hey, I won. AGAIN!!!
  • BorninUSA · 1 year ago
I am not convinced that this bailout problem wasn't pushed at us now because the Congress is set to adjourn to go campaigning. And the election is only a few weeks away. I don't trust Paulson or Bernanke and they are trying to make us afraid, very afraid, if something isn't done RIGHT NOW we are in real trouble. In other words I want the money NOW!!!

Paulson has the gaul to insist he be given a check for $700B with no strings attached. Once again the repugs are playing us for fools. So we don't and then things go south and the repugs tell us it our fault; regardless of what went on all these years leading up to this failure. Congress needs to get tough this time. Haven't they learned anything from the repug tricks of the past few years? The sad thing is if Congress doesn't go along with Paulson he will make it so miserable for everyone and you know who will be blamed.....Obama! The Congress is damned if they do and damned if they don't. I pray they don't cave to Paulson this time. Make him bend to rules that Congress sets out not his rules.

They have poor John McCain so confused he doesn't know which way to lie. One day he is for giving Paulson the money and the next he is against it.
