AMERICAblog: RNC spent $150,000 on clothes and make-up for Palin

  • stranded · 1 year ago
Only four thou on hair and makeup? I would have expected some major stylist action working on Sarah. Just look at the before and after pics and you can tell she's had some "advisors." 4 grand is what a single photo shoot can cost for some of those folks. I think they're cooking their books.
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
And I'm getting real sick of seeing her in that same red plether Eisenhower-type zip up jacket.
  • Hannah · 1 year ago
And here's another Palin disaster for the RNC:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081021/ap_on_el_pr...
AP INVESTIGATION: Alaska funded Palin kids' travel

Though we've all (I assume) read about Palin charging the State of Alaska per diem for living in her own house, and reimbursing her travel for her hubby and the kids, this is a new report that states in part:

"On Aug. 6, three weeks before Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain chose Palin his running mate, and after Alaska reporters asked for the records, Palin ordered changes to previously filed expense reports for her daughters' travel."

Which kind of makes her look guilty of something, right??? Go read the whole thing. It really is devastating.
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
Is the RNC also picking up the cost of these kids' tutors? School is in session.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
    I just updated the post

Sarah Palin spent on clothes in one month what the average American family of four spends on clothes in 50 years.
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
Like I said in a post below. In September, I spent $8 on mascara and chap stick.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Did you put in on your dragster credit card?
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
No, I'm a woman. How do you bill your cosmetics, Sir?
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Noody goes in front of the camera w/o cosmetics. Look at Biden. He's plastered up like a French whore.....
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
Well, at least Joe doesn't look like Bruce Willis worked on him.

But, as usual, you didn't answer the question.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Cosmetics probably wouldn't help me, td-2. How bout you?
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
    We'll take this offline,

I'll be 52 on 11/23 and I look pretty good: visually and physically (5'2,
120 lbs); but I'm not running for office. (Also not afraid to show my grey,
    which is winning the battle.)

Granted, anyone on TV, or on the stump, needs some help to look visually
better; that's a given. But I do remember the right about 18 months ago
totally eviscerating Edwards for his $400 haircuts. When was the last time a
major party: DNC or RNC spent $150K in one month dressing up their
candidate? Or when was the last time the DNC or RNC spent nearly $9K in one
    month making up their candidate?

To treat a female VP candidate differently (DNC or RNC) is wrong.

To say you disagree is to agree for the equal treatment of women, which is
    totally against the republican tenent.

    Theresa
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
I agree totally for the equal treatment of women in the workplace; both for wages and for advancement with no "glass ceilings" Otherwise, I treat women with much more deference than men. I've probably opened doors and given up good seats to a lot of liberal women who have hated my guts for doing so. I do think 150 grand is over the top. The 9K isn't much for showtime on tv. The $400 haircut was way "over the top". I pay 12 bucks plus an 8 buck tip because my barber is a 55 year old conservative grandma raising her grandkids on a shoestring.
Sounds like you're a beautiful woman, except for the politics. You're young enough, you'll eventually see the light.
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
Your Yes, But is condescending. This all started because I stated an $8
expense for macasara and Chap Stick. That's the problem. My views are
different from yours, but I'm not the enemy. I'd like to think that we're
working for a common good. Two weeks from now we'll have our answer and I
sincerely hope that we can mend the deep chasm that has divided Americans.
I'd hate to see us all fall into the abyss.

Let's agree to disagree, but also let's agree to conscientously work to heal
our differences and come to a common treaty for the betterment of ALL
    Americans.

    Theresa
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
You sound like my friend, Mirth, who is about the only liberal with whom I'd walk a mile. You aren't in disguise, are you?
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
No, I'm not Mirth, but I'd like to think that I speak for him/her who hopes
    for the healing to begin.

Of course, she won't need any of it when she goes back to Alaska for good.

Hey this is nothing. Remember when John Edwards got that $300 haircut? Now that was an outrage! <end snark>

But I thought Palin was experienced and that's why they picked her. Seriously - if she had the qualifications then why do they have to "sexy" her up so much? Is it just to give people like Rush their daily hardnon? At least that might keep him off the pills...
  • leo · 1 year ago
Gee, only $100k less than what Joe the Plumber grosses per year. These are regular people. What's the beef?

St. Louis - New York - Minneapolis....What!!!....no spreading the wealth...oopps... in small town America?!?!

    $150,000 in one month!!

What the hell would the expenses be if she became president?

    10K a day?
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
that's a question you don't even want to be asking... one of the first things she did as mayor was to slash the community budget so she could free up some money to redecorate her office and lease herself a new SUV... known as The Mayormobile...
  • Laur · 1 year ago
Didn't she have the mayor's office redecorated more than once? Though I'd heard that.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
yep... at least a couple of times.... and she had "work" done on the Gov. Mansion as well.... even though she has spent more time in her own home since being elected to that position...
  • Laur · 1 year ago
And the Republican Party still wants us to think they are the party of
fiscal responsibility. Amazing. Just look at what happens to our nation's
economy when these sob's are in charge: they run it off a cliff, every time.

It's always better to RIDE the elephant than to have to clean up after it.

    *sheesh!*
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
Completely OT for this thread, but, my 15 year old just saw the question to Palin about what the VP does. He listened to the answer. At the end, he said she's wrong. The VP breaks a tie in a Senate vote. That resulted in high fives all around (and some extra bucks for music)
  • tduffy2 · 1 year ago
He also heard her say something about it's prostitutional?
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
Shame they didn't also update McCain's Daniel Boone/Davey Crockett look while they were at it. Say a few suits from itality instead off the back of some poor deer, and some felt hats instead coonskin hats that he made himself.

Even would help if they just spent $5 for a spray bottle of Fabreeze.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
So after the election, do they have to give this back? Pay taxes on it as income? Or just go back to Alaska with a new wardrobe?
  • Laur · 1 year ago
Will the RNC want it back after it's been all skanked up by that racist?

    Hmmm...maybe.
  • AngelaChanning · 1 year ago
Galling. They could have gone to Macy's with a freakin coupon. Good God, when Michelle Obama buys a dress, it usually cost about $100-120.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
Not if Barack wins the presidency. Then her gown for the inaguration will probably cost enough to buy my car insurance for at least 2 or 3 years. But, also telling that she probably won't order the gown until after November 4. Cindy probably has a closet full of such gowns. But, I'm hoping she gets to blow $5,000 on the gown for the night of January 20 ... and another $1,000 for the suit she will at noon that day.
  • MNUSA · 1 year ago
Michelle Obama would look stunning in a K-Mart blue light special. But I hope she has the necessity to buy an expensive designer gown for her husband's inauguration!
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
All that money spent and she still looks like an extra for the movie "Fargo." That poor woman needs a gay shopping friend.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
    Go for it, Indigo!
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
I thought she WAS shopping with Republicans..... or are the closeted guys not fashion conscious??
  • okojo · 1 year ago
She needs a very serious gay shopping friend.

Note to the RNC, the Republicans in the closet have also their fashion sense way in denial.

I find it ironic that the two best dressed congressmen for many years were David Dreier and Mark Foley. Governor Palin can asked David Dreier at least, perhaps Lindsey Graham.
  • wolfram · 1 year ago
I don't really have a problem with this. Think what it costs to clothe actors in a film. What I have a problem with is what's inside the clothes.

  • persephone · 1 year ago
Well, she sure as hell doesn't look like she spent that much! She should have hired Rachel Zoe!!!
  • okojo · 1 year ago
If they are going to spend $150k on Sarah Palin's wardrobe, at least have Cindy McCain have some of her good taste rub off on her... (I do like some of color she picks out in her suits)

Also, Tell Governor Palin, no more suede boots....

    http://tinyurl.com/5a8gt9

Forget the clothes, Palin needs some serious help on her shoes... once she gets her shoes down, she will look fabulous...

As you can see I spend too much time and energy thinking on this subject...
  • Laur · 1 year ago
The RNC uses their money for THAT? What about all the media coverage of $400 haircuts? Of course, Edwards isn't a candidate now, but this was a talking point pretty much from the start.

How come McCain can shuffle around in $500 loafers, and Palin can cavort about in stuff from Saks & Neiman-Marcus, and nobody calls them out on it?

On WHAT PLANET are these two assclowns supposed to be in touch with the concerns of most U.S. citizens?
  • mlwjones · 1 year ago
    Given:

    a) a price of $3.39/6 pack of Milwaukee's Best;
    b) Joe The Plumber (TM) can expect to live another 40 years;

    c) Joe The Plumber can drink 18 beers a day every day for the rest of his life on two months of Sarah Palin's fashion budget.

I don't think even Joe The Plumber could do that.

We grow great people in our small towns in America. But the clothes...those we haff ta buy in da big cities.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Cindy McCain is probably looking down her nose at Palin thinking she is a bargain shopper. After all, Cindy's one night outfit for the RNC convention was over $300,000.

Remind me again, who are the elitists?
  • powwow500 · 1 year ago
I think that inlcuded about $290,000 of jewelry.
  • MNUSA · 1 year ago
It's no secret that Cindy McCain is wealthy. I don't have a problem with her spending as long as it isn't taken from campaign contributions. And there is no indication that it was. But I don't know who's more out of touch: People who have led a life of privilege (the McCains) or people who are planning to live a life of privilege (Palins).

Hard to believe she could spend that much in the little Frontenac store, bet most of it was in New York.

wow! Palin seems to take the prize for getting others to pay for her clothes AND expenses for her kids. From Editor and Publisher, Alaska is looking into Palin billing the state for taking her daughters on many vary outings, including a stay at the $700+ Essex House in New York.

i think when she returns to Alaska she is not going to find it so easy to fool the people with her "down home act"

  • MNUSA · 1 year ago
Palin appears to have boundary issues. She doesn't separate personal issues from government issues. The trooper incident where she and her husband put pressure on public officials to fire her ex-brother-in-law is one example. Charging the Alaska taxpayers for travel expenses for her children and her husband is another. Now buying an expensive wardrobe with political contributions. Can you imagine how much fun she and her family could have with the United States' piggy bank?

Give me a break...don't seem to have read anything on what Michelle Obama has spent on clothes....Do you really think she buys her clothes at Target and Marshalls? Be fair and consistent.

  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Your age is showing. You will find looks only get you so far, as in Palin's case her disapproval rating is soaring and it isn't jealousy, it is her lack of basic knowledge. Courage and character? Is it courage or blind ambition for Palin, my vote is blind ambition. And character, yes she is charismatic, but if she had character she would not be spewing forth a ton of lies.

You are right. Let's not talk about Palin. It's like shooting fish in a barrel - its too easy and not sporting like shooting wolves from a helicopter.

“Tifanie White, who reportedly has done makeup for the shows "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol," was paid a total of $8,672.55 in September by the McCain-Palin campaign, according to the campaign's latest monthly financial report filed this week with the Federal Election Commission. She was paid $5,583.43 the previous month, records show.”

At least McCain campaign REVEALS what they spend. Haven't seen anything from the Obama camp have you? No and you won't....until after the election and you find out that your man accepted donations from overseas...just wait..This issue of clothes will be trivial.
  • MadMaddie · 1 year ago
You are an idiot. When you donate you have to log in and fill out where you work each and every time. It keeps a running tally.

For months Obama has been making records in small donations from your average American Joe's - you know, the real plumbers. McCain didn't complain then but now he's got nothing. Not plans just attacks on his opponent so he burns down his own legacy by stirring up the pot of racism and hatred calls millions upon millions of Americans “un American” as his ship sinks to the bottom.

Do you think all these donations are being sent to the Obama campaign office in unmarked bills and all in separate envelope of $86.00 each? Have records numbers of overseas envelopes with boo scary stamps and places arrived? Where is the list of all of McCain’s donations under $200.00? Maybe he didn’t want to embarrass himself further.

Maybe if McCain didn't spend thousands of dollars playing dress up with Palin he could have more cash on hand.

But when Obama wins, please know that any of your small donations to McCain was a welfare donation to dress the Palin Children and the First Dude of AK.

    Enjoy.

    GIVE A GIRL A BREAK!
Look, I loathe Palin. But if I were plucked from out of nowhere (aka Alaska) and were middle class (which she is) I would not have the budget for the type of wardrobe and makeup needed for a national office female candidate. If she spent $3,000 for each outfit (including underwear, shoes, suites/blouses/coats) it would not be unreasonable, and she would end up with 50 outfits. OK, I wouldn't go to Needless Markup (Nieman Marcus) myself, but I guess Cindy must have an account there, eh? Plus she probably needed to figure in clothes for Toddie and the kids. (Did you notice how ugly her kid's clothes are? Its like they have to dress ugly so Sarah can look good.) Anyway, I don't think we should pick on her for this. There's lots of other things that we can go after.
  • MadMaddie · 1 year ago
I think we can - that is a hell of a lot of money when people are scraping money together for a gallon of milk these days. It is excessive. I am not saying Palin should not have some decent clothes and Todd a good suit or two but my that is excessive. But coming from the McCain where Cindy drops $300 grand on a convention outfit she will wear once - I guess you know where they are coming from.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Oh, I think it is right to question this. It wasn't just clothes, she spent $300 on a stroller for the new baby. She appears to have outfitted her entire family on someone else's nickel (in her case many nickels)

For me, it isn't just the clothes. Palin seems to have cornered the market on getting someone else to pick up her tab. There is her cutting the Wasilla budget so she outfit her new office and buy an SUV .There is her charging the state for living in her own house. NOW the state of Alaska is questioning her expense accounts for flying the kids, mostly the girls, to events that were not Family events. Event planners have no recollection of inviting the family to these events. One was an event in New York and the girls were ensconced in the Essex House which is $700 + a night.

Mrs. Palin has experience, experience in how to live the good life without paying.

Um...Sarah Palin is middle class. By who's definition, love?!! Its my understanding that woman is worth over $1 mill!!
    http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i4qcqPId4Evh...
Now if that is considered middle class these days then both myself and my paycheck missed the memo and so I need to see a few more zero's at the end of the year!
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
I disagree. $1 million is not wealthy. It is high upper middle class, but that is about it. Median housing here in California was $500,000 before the crash. Another words, if you had a home a bit above average, larger house and larger lot with mineral rights, you may have exceeded that $1 million limit that you believe is wealthy. They may have a nicer car, probably two and have a gardener to do the yard. Given the cost of medical care and unavailability of good insurance, you can easily be wiped out by a serious illness. That again is not the definition of wealthy. I would put $5-10 milliion as the bottom of being wealthy, that is safe from hardship and loss. Of course, things are different in Alaska than in California, but my guess is that median housing is still about $250,000 to $300,000. Wealthy really is those who have surplus income to live a comfortable life and be able to own anything, take regular vacations, and indulge yourself and family. I seriously doubt people worth $1 million are that comfortable.

Yes, it would be a petty and silly, nitpicking issue except for the Republican hypocrisy of making issues of things like this with Obama, their lying and twisting stories about Obama and especially their hypocrisy in calling Obama an elitist. We all know elitist is a code word, but they also use it the proper sense making Obama out to be out of contact with the common Americans, those like Jim-the-Plumber. $150,000 for clothing for Sarah Palin's wardrobe or $12,000 for McCain's makeup hardly strikes me as having a sense of McCain or Palin in touch with Jim-the-Plumber or Joe Six-Pack. The issue is the same as McCain's claims of being sympathetic to Americans experiencing foreclosure when he owns 7 or 12 homes, a dozen cars and has a private jet, while making an issue of the fact that Obama's single home is worth, gasp!, a million dollars and earned $2 million last year ... the first year that Obama has had a multimilion dollar income. It is further aggrevated by McCain claiming that Obama had an elitist upbringing when his mother had to get food stamps once and his grandmother had to forego new clothes to pay for basic necessities for Obama and raised Obama in a two bedroom apartment. Obama did attend Ivy League schools on merit scholarships while McCain attended Annapolis by being the son and grandson of admirals, was 894 our of his class of 899, crashed 5 Navy jets and was known as goof-off, incompetent and hedonist playboy in college and his young career as a Naval flyer. Yes, his 5 1/2 years in the Hanoi Hilton was heroic, but it in no way qualifies him to be president, only buys forgiveness for his youthful indiscretions, is not an entitlement to high office and the presidency. In fact, McCain's careers and life scream entitlement, yet it is more Republcian hypocrisy to blame the poor for the entitlements of welfare, poor education, poverty and hunger.

She's not middle class, she doesn't have an account at Nieman-Marcus, and who cares how ugly her kids clothes are and there are alot of things we can go after her for and I assume most A-Bloggers can multi-task and point out all the stupid shit she does.

Do you donate your hard-earned dollars to a candidate so they can pick up a new wardrobe from Neiman Marcus? Or do you donate so they can buy advertising, pay campaign staff and campaign travel expenses? What did she wear for official duties as governor of Alaska? I hope Joe Six-Pack liked her outfits; he evidently paid for them.

But Pat and I have the satisfaction that every dime that we have got is honestly ours.

I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she would look good in anything.

One other thing I probably should tell you, because if I don't they will probably be saying this about me, too. We did get something, a gift, after the election.

A man down in Texas heard Pat on the radio mention the fact that our two youngsters would like to have a dog, and, believe it or not, the day before we left on this campaign trip we got a message from Union Station in Baltimore, saying they had a package for us. We went down to get it. You know what it was?

It was a little cocker spaniel dog, in a crate that he had sent all the way from Texas, black and white, spotted, and our little girl Tricia, the six year old, named it Checkers.

And you know, the kids, like all kids, loved the dog, and I just want to say this, right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we are going to keep it.

If she keeps the clothes after the election, is that taxable for her?

I appreciate the economic boost to the Neiman Marcus store in downtown Minneapolis. The Repubs said they plan to give the clothing to charity. I hope they don't plan to take the full deduction; used clothing isn't worth a lot. They must be the same people who clean out their attics and donate their 70s era prom dresses to the Red Cross when there's a disaster.
