This story is fail...
They set up this site to work liek amazon. I bet you would get similar search results from amazon. But more precisely if you notice the image results are from the top filtered results from google image searches for those same words. The prices are just random.
Of course you are getting dirty search results for dirty words. Thats like saying google is racist for returning results on what you are searching for.

Serious? You can't get results like this article is showing without those "products" being in some database that is being searched. Someone put information about the "products" in that database. This has to be setup by the RNC or by someone contracted to do so.
concernedinoh
You can if you're just using Amazons' Search API. Do you really think the RNC built out this massive database of products and images just for this dinky website? Do you know how many manhours that would take? When you can just download the code to search Amazon?
erinker74
If they can ban words like "gay" and "vagina", you would think that someone would think to throw in "homosexual" and "clitoris". If no words had been banned at all I could see your point. BUt they clearly banned some and not others. Why?
Embarrassed
You guys... are seriously out to lunch. It's an oversight, sure. They should have thought twice about using Amazon's API. But they didn't select these books. These are books available BECAUSE OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH, the 1st Amendment.
You folks getting so worked up are just as muddled in your understanding of free speech and how the Internet works as the Republicans who thoughtlessly approved this thing without realizing the products you could buy.
Seriously, Third Reich comparisons? You all are ridiculous. Makes me embarrassed to be far left in this country...
The Dude
This has nothing to do with free speech. The RNC should be embarrassed for not filtering properly. They bothered to filter for "gay" and "vagina", but forgot "anal", and didn't check what kind of hateful shit came up for "Jew"? No one is worked up, but it should be embarrassing.
I didn't see any comparison's to the Third Reich in the article, but the RNC risks the subject being brought up, when they failed to filter out books like [Jews and Their Lies].
I do agree that this is minor stuff and hardly an indication of anything more than incompetence. And we already knew that from when the Republicans ran our country.

Check the latest blog post on the site (back up to the root URL), posted by one Todd Herman
"A young republican in the RNC New Media Department created a funky, little game for Young Republicans to borrow and spend like President Obama. Mentioned by New Media Director, Todd Herman in Indiana after Chairman Steele spoke at the Young Republican National Convention in Indianapolis, the Obama spending toy lets Young Republican chapters from around the country compete to see who can reach the $3.4 trillion limit set by our current president.
"The New Media team is completely focused on launching the new web platform and infrastructure, but to keep our sanity we let a team member put together this fun little application. Instructions for use can be found here, the application his here, and we hope you enjoy!"
Nice. Blame it on those darned kids.

Does any thought, any thought at all ever go into anything they do? I have never seen a group make such fools of themselves while trying to poke fun at others. It always seems to blow up in thier faces. Its almost like they hire liberal/progressives to set this stuff up, but they don't know they are doing that, and then they get screwed. I guess they are just grabbing the badge of stupidity and hanging on proudly.

That's just it. They don't DO anything. They have no constructive thoughts on anything. They were given their 30 years of hegemony and, as a result, shown to be literal thieves and murderers whose 'ideas' have destroyed the country. They've poisoned the body and intellect of the nation with their sickness.

That's right. Because pornography is the leading online business, so no one would ever think of searching for words like homosexual, bondage, anal, boobs or clitoris. Especially not Republicans.

Oh, man, Skippy and Judy, thanks for the info. I'm not sure I care that much to log in to this website, but it's sweet of you both to give these suggestions, which I'll certainly keep in mind for the future. It sounds absolutely loony-tunes. I think the Republicans have truly gone off the deep end (as if they weren't before). They're obviously getting desperate. (And if I feel like laughing even more after I've had a drink or two, I'll certainly take your advice!) Peace and love.
basically they've got some lazy developers who figured they'd just use pass-through queries to amazon's API. not a bad choice for most enterprises but a little nutty for something as image-obsessed as the GOP.

A: I don't understand what Obama dollars are -- is Obama giving me money? If so, yay Obama! How is that a bad thing?
B: Yeah, I typed in "clitoris" and among the products is the t-shirt with the slogan, "I'm not gay, but my boyfriend is" -- but it's stretched across a torso with breasts.
So.......the RNC thinks hetero women want to advertise that their boyfriend is a homosexual?
Or, the RNC is selling t-shirts to trans women who have gay boyfriends?
Didn't spend long on the site, but for life of me I don't get the point.
Is this supposed to be funny? (You always have to ask with Republicans.)
What the heck is the whole thing supposed to mean? (You often have to ask with Republicans.)
judybrowni
My mistake, this is supposed to be a game for "young" Republicans, see how much you can buy on the "borrowed" three trillion or so of an Obama credit card.
Actually, books about masturbation, and t-shirts (from "clitoris" search) sound like a good deal compared to what Bush bought with the trillions he borrowed: two failed wars, a tax cut for the rich, and oil profits for Halliburton.)
judybrowni
And bonuses for Wall Street fat cats.
Frankly, I prefer the masturbation books: at least with the "Obamabucks" I'm getting a bang for my bucks.
But you don't understand! The whole point of the "Obamacard" is that it's Obama's SUPPORTERS that will use it--wink, nudge--and we all know they're in to porn, gayness, words like clitori, and all sorts of other naughtiness.
Heavens! No decent, fiscally responsible, self-respecting God-fearing REPUBLICAN would ever use an Obamacard!

lj_68
I have no love for the GOP but you guys may want to take a look at this.
Something is not right here aside from how wrong the game seems:
"5/15/09 Update: What you see here is a placeholder between what was and what is to come for GOP.com. Don't get too used to this page--the complete rebuild is around the corner. Soon we'll have a new look and a more enjoyable, modern, open and participatory way to share our ideals with the Country.
On Friday of last week, we chose a vendor to rebuild our website and digital presence; the two are not the same and the distinction matters---a lot. It matters especially so for us.
The website you see today is difficult to update, hard to use, and locked in a Web 1.0 environment. It is also stale. It is in need of a massive spring clean. To be fair, my predecessor and good friend, Cyrus Krohn, and his team were on the way to changing all of this. Then, we elected a new Chairman, re-grouped, re-staffed and then, finally, we locked & loaded.
They've already removed it. You can see the splash screen, but attempting to enter the "store" gives you this:
"Server cannot access application directory 'D:\Webs\newmedia.gop.com\obamacard\'. The directory does not exist or is not accessible because of security settings."
They pulled it so quickly that they didn't even bother to present a nice clean "404/Page not found" redirect. Heh.

well, in lieu of an actual rational critique of the RNC page, obviously meant in humor, pull shit out of your ass (which in Avatsos case is a pretty large piece of real estate)
the "search" is merely coded up to Amazon's search engine. So you consider Amazon to be subversive, anti-Semitic, pornographic, etc? In fact, plug any of those words into Google, similar results.
But hey, go with your strengths. Libs have very few valid criticisms, they usually go with demagoguing, so carry on kiddies.

Although true barb, if it was coded up using the API strictly with no filtering already than gay would have come up with a nice search. Try it on Amazon. The fact that they selectively filtered some words and not others means there were intentional choices made, just not all good ones.

I also know the name of the directive chimpenfurer designed to keep the archives closed in order that people might never learn the truth: Executive Order No. 13,233 ...And while you're busy getting up to speed, don't forget that W's Granddaddy worked for IG Farben, i.e. Nazi steel, until Roosevelt shut them down by invoking the 'Trading with Enemies Act' in 1942. In other words, AFTER, the US had formerly declared war on Germany. If you have any facts, as opposed to insults, you'd like to share with me I'd enjoy hearing them.

Wow--this is truly a NRC fuck-up. It would be interesting to know who will get blamed for this. Obviously the NRC is totally embarrassed by it since it closed the site so quickly.
I did read the rules. First you have to be 18 years or older. So at least they could have done, being so family valued oriented, was to filter out any porno searches, etc. Just shows that they were too technically lazy or incompetent to do this--my guess is that they are incompetent. This might have been a fun little gimmick for drawing attention to the RNC site, but now, as typical, the RNC is being made fun of.
Secondly, the rules on this game imply that $3,400 will be given to the YR chapter of the winner's choice--the winner being the person who completes spending (how much?) first between July 13 - July 31. Of course they have the standard boiler plate language that allows the RNC to stop the game at any time.
For those who are trying to play but not getting access, you can send an email, like I did, to obamacard@gop.com. I figure they deserve to have this email box overstuffed with peeved players.

This is the most ridiculous crap I've ever seen. Whatever "widget" type one-stop-shop application they are using is what shows these things, not the RNC themselves. If anything, chalk it up to a lack of common sense by the programmers.
brahman
Agreed. And why are democrats on the RNC website anyway? I'm assuming it's because they have nothing better to do. And so they just browse around looking for anything they can find to say, "see... those damned republicans are at it again." And if someone wants to hate Jews, or Latinos, or Gays... isn't that their right? Why try to push your views on everyone else?
Chivas
Honestly, it's kind of sad that you feel the need to try to up this as if it's the RNC's doing. I'm so glad you feel the need to pursue negative politics. If in fact your savior Obama supports positive politics and change, why not join him instead of promoting this trash?
Not to mention, if we really want to get picky and negative politics is fair play, the RNC is saying you can buy all this stuff with the ObamaCard. Maybe the Porn Industry is trying to cash in on stimulus money as we speak. Perhaps they'll benefit from Cap 'n' Trade too...the ObamaCard at work, stealing the joy of boobs from the rich and giving the joy of boobs to the poor... until he taxes everyone all the same.
erinker74
And if the RNC is suggesting that Obama wants to subsidize porn they need to be called out too because that is just so blatantly wrong it's funny. Scare tactics, AGAIN! That seems to be where the RNC goes when they don't have a legitimate argument.
And it's "negative politics" to point out anything that isn't promoting Obama? Really? Suggesting that Dems should just ignore anything the RNC does because it is "nagative politics" is ridiculous, AT BEST.

I find the RNC's explanation on Politico (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/25069...) highly suspicious seeing as the RNC already filtered some words like "gay" ...if they already had filtering in place, why didn't they filter "clitorous" or "escort"?

Is it any wonder that those who are in or support the religious right are bigots? Religion is its own form of bigotry. It's just not the Taliban or Al Queda, but it includes Evangelicals, Mormons, Catholics and, yes, Jews. Each group trumpets its direct line to God and its superiority to all other religions. The religious right likes to espouse about America's Judeo-Christian heritage. What??? Most of the people who spout that line are the same people who complain that the Jews killed Christ. (Which if true, they only doing their job so that Christ would die for our sins. They should be saying, "Thank you." The hypocrisy is overwhelming. Is it any wonder that people like Bill Maher say "pox" on religion?
Alan Katz

Actually, this nation does not have a Judeo-Christian foundation regardless of all protestations to the contrary.
The founding fathers were almost all "Deists", who believed in a Creator (hence the wording in the Declaration of Independence) but did not believe in religion, or Christianity at all.
Sorry to burst the bubble, all you religious nuts, but our founding fathers would have had a stroke if they lived to see the dominance of religion in politics today. They -hated- that: it's one of the primary reasons they revolted.
That was the Age of Enlightenment, a totally humanist secular period. Too bad we lost it.

Hear! Hear! There is no doubt that many of the Founders were not big on religion. And it did affect how they created this country. And while we are at it the Republican "strict constructionists" should get hold of the principal that Bill of Rights is all about protecting the citizens from the government, not each other. The fact that they are mirroring Amazon.com's search engine is beside the point. The RNC is so out of touch, so does NOT get it, that they went ahead with this without first checking the search engine out to insure something like this would not happen. Once again, the RNC leaps before they look. Very stupid.

I'm confused. Should the RNC regulate what you can or can't look at? Because I'm pretty sure you'd just bitch about that too.
davidbrisker
Of course the RNC shouldn't regulate what is appropriate to view and what isn't. No one should. You are missing my point. The RNC created this as a marketing tool without thinking it all the way through. If you hold yourself up as the party of "Family Values", then put out something to the public designed to create questions in people's minds regarding the validity of what your opponents are doing, you better make sure that it does nothing that is embarrassing to the party or makes you look foolish. In this case, it opens them up for criticism on many levels. This program, and much else the RNC is doing these days to rebuild their party, is simply misguided, poorly planned, not thought through, and ends up hurting the party rather than it's intended target.

Republicans see no problem with destroying this country if they can't get what they want. They attack everyone who disagrees with them or doesn't live like they do. They have become the American party of hate, bigotry, and the blisteringly stupid. They have a vested interest in ruining everything about the United States because in doing so an infinite number of profit making schemes can be hatched. They hate America, they hate most Americans, and they really hate science and anyone with critical thinking skills. Our country will be better when they finally dry up and go away, and that can't be too soon. Republicans want to hurt you.

1) The insurance companies currently decide IF I am covered by insurance, what care I can get (if I get care) and what doctor I see. Insurance companies wanted my wife out of the hospital because she had reach the maximum days covered. Never mind that she had a life threatening infection.
2) Republicans want limited government interference in a person's life, except for certain health decisions best left to a woman and her doctor-- i.e. should she chose to an abortion or not? I believe this is still an official stance of the republican party.
3) Since when are civil rights a matter of public opinion? Standing Bear vs. the U.S. government proved that the US Constitution was incorrect to classify native americans as less than a full human being. Brown vs. Board of Education found that seperste was not legal...
Could go on, but it seems my hate filled heart has caused me to see reason.

Yeah, but....these guys aren't a store.
They're chosing to post what amounts to a "Sarah Palin shooting polar bears" flash game on an "official" GOP site. So there's a certain amount of propriety expected, and, as somebody else mentioned, a certain amount of endorsement inferred by what they're showing.
Where are they getting the list of "products" from? Is it a google search result, are they getting their product lists from online store(s) through web queries, did they hand-pick the most, in their minds, damaging types of items and are calling them from a db? Etc. The former 2 just imply a certain ignorance or blind spot about web queries; the latter is malicious.
But, basically, the mere fact that they'd have this kind of childish tripe of their site *at all* show how unserious they think public service is.
That said, I got, like, a gajillion points on that Palin shoot-em-up during the campaign.

I just discovered a very subtle but significant discrepency in this whole story. Go to the Americablog article and follow the link which reads: http://www.gop.com/obamacard/ It takes you to a website with a picture of Obama holding up a credit card right? On that same page the link appears in the address bar. When you click on the word "ENTER" it opens another window to a page with the GOP.COM logo. Now go to a search engine i.e. yahoo.com, google.com, dogpile.com and type in gop.com. In the search list you will find the actual GOP website which is gop.ORG (gop.org). John Aravosis, the guy who wrote the article, has cleverly created a story that is 100% bogus. I knew I didn't believe it!!! You people got all worked up for NOTHING!!!! DUH!!!!!

Nope, go to amazon.com and type in the same search words this blogger did and the exact items show up.
Also, the main page clearly displays the word "beta", a common software industry term meaning "not ready."
I particularly liked the last line of the article; I am not sure what to make of the fact that the RNC programmers never thought to search for pornographic images, but liberal web site columnists did.
Dammit! I was hoping to buy all my anti-Semitic, anti-Latino, anti-gay anal and clitoris-friendly Christmas-in-July gifts there. Now I gotta go fight the mall traffic.
Damn you, ObamaCard, for your bait and switch tactics!!
-
They set up this site to work liek amazon. I bet you would get similar search results from amazon. But more precisely if you notice the image results are from the top filtered results from google image searches for those same words. The prices are just random.
Of course you are getting dirty search results for dirty words. Thats like saying google is racist for returning results on what you are searching for.
Now do as your told and get off the internet slave, Oh wait I thought I was you for a second.. Hang Loose
The veil has been lifted once and for all.
((blink blink))
Um... I remember after Nov '08 I wondered if Jon Stewart would have anything to joke about?
Man, I am so dumb.
They do offer the Arab Oil and Gas Directory for only $1,194.00 Obama dollars.
Wow, won't let you search the word gay but has no problem with pedophile.
basically they've got some lazy developers who figured they'd just use pass-through queries to amazon's API. not a bad choice for most enterprises but a little nutty for something as image-obsessed as the GOP.
repugs should stay away from the internet, they just don't understand it
B: Yeah, I typed in "clitoris" and among the products is the t-shirt with the slogan, "I'm not gay, but my boyfriend is" -- but it's stretched across a torso with breasts.
Actually, books about masturbation, and t-shirts (from "clitoris" search) sound like a good deal compared to what Bush bought with the trillions he borrowed: two failed wars, a tax cut for the rich, and oil profits for Halliburton.)
Frankly, I prefer the masturbation books: at least with the "Obamabucks" I'm getting a bang for my bucks.
"The Latino Threat." is the #7 hit for latino on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search...
the other "latino" products are there too.
Heavens! No decent, fiscally responsible, self-respecting God-fearing REPUBLICAN would ever use an Obamacard!
Search for "Obama" and you can get "Dreams from my Father", "Audacity of Hope" and a t-shirt with Obama as Superman
I am so confused but really need to verify this as true because me friend tells me he can't recreate it or find it.

So, it's hard to say if they've been set up or if this IS the new site.
Much as I'd love to see them go down, I want it to be for something they actually did.

The project is underway. "
"Server cannot access application directory 'D:\Webs\newmedia.gop.com\obamacard\'. The directory does not exist or is not accessible because of security settings."
They pulled it so quickly that they didn't even bother to present a nice clean "404/Page not found" redirect. Heh.

AMERICAblog is run by Liberals?
Why has no one told me this?!
*runs through the night, screaming: The Liberals are taking over! They already have AMERICAblog!*
There are 85 Alt tags missing!
AMERICAblog is NOT the issue here... They are the ones who exposed the RNC website. Or would you expect the Repubs to expose themselves?!!!
The website that is the topic of this article is registered to the RNC!
Not sure what your point was. It's no secret.
http://www.gop.com/splashpage/index.aspx
or directly here,
http://www.gop.com/Connect/ContactUs.htm
It's a fine word. You really should use it more often.
As a Lutheran, I am honor bound to say we don't, as they say, "own" that one.
Just sayin'.
Anyhow, the HTML coding was pretty pathetic. High school students were doing better 10 years ago.
the "search" is merely coded up to Amazon's search engine. So you consider Amazon to be subversive, anti-Semitic, pornographic, etc? In fact, plug any of those words into Google, similar results.
But hey, go with your strengths. Libs have very few valid criticisms, they usually go with demagoguing, so carry on kiddies.
According to former US Justice Dept. Nazi War Crimes prosecutor John Loftus -who is today the director of the Florida Holocaust Museum- "The Bush family fortune came from the Third Reich,"
-Sarasota Herald-Tribune 11/11/2000 http://www.georgewalkerbush.net/bushgang.htm
http://www.gop.com/obamacard/
These people really are the 21st century's heirs to the Third Reich.
Not only is that counter-productive to any argument you might have, it just doesn't make sense.
don't forget that W's Granddaddy worked for IG Farben, i.e. Nazi steel, until Roosevelt shut them down by invoking the 'Trading with Enemies Act' in 1942. In other words, AFTER, the US had formerly declared war on Germany. If you have any facts, as opposed to insults, you'd like to share with me I'd enjoy hearing them.
And it's "negative politics" to point out anything that isn't promoting Obama? Really? Suggesting that Dems should just ignore anything the RNC does because it is "nagative politics" is ridiculous, AT BEST.

Too bad we lost it.
under which weak minds are servilely crouched.
Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal
every fact, every opinion.
Question with boldness even the existence of a god
because, if there be one, he must more approve of the
homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear…"
- Thomas Jefferson
First result in Amazon for Jew is, surprise, Jews and their lies. You all are simply making fun of the Amazon API. Down with Amazon! Viva Revolution!
isn't. No one should. You are missing my point. The RNC created this as a
marketing tool without thinking it all the way through. If you hold yourself
up as the party of "Family Values", then put out something to the
public designed to create questions in people's minds regarding the validity
of what your opponents are doing, you better make sure that it does nothing
that is embarrassing to the party or makes you look foolish. In this case,
it opens them up for criticism on many levels. This program, and much else
the RNC is doing these days to rebuild their party, is simply misguided,
poorly planned, not thought through, and ends up hurting the party rather
than it's intended target.

They probably didn't realize the idiocy in doing this, but I don't think it's intentional.
Only a white sheat wearing, cross burning, bible thumping, seig heil saying, Sara Palin loving, jesus fellating, science hating skinhead Nazi with a 75 IQ could actually vote for these hate mongering, anti science, racist, sexist, superstitious christianist freaks.
Ironically, they prolly banned *gay* because they're trying to repress their own latent gay impulses. I mean, they're all self hating friends of Dorothy after all. Hypocrites.
The javascript (I think) pop up seems to be buggy -- the window is un-expandable, and too small for its contents.
Now that Obama has been in office for six months and has totally embraced the treasonous policies of the Dubya/dick misadministration, this is all the proof you need to see that both parties are nothing but change you can believe in that's more of the same!
Kevin Schmidt
Anyway, you'd think an organization with all the money the Repugs have could design a better website. Not just the content mentioned, but the functionality and design of this thing is pathetic.
It's like the teenage son of someone's mistress designed this thing.
Go to the Americablog article and follow the link which reads: http://www.gop.com/obamacard/
It takes you to a website with a picture of Obama holding up a credit card right? On that same page the link appears in the address bar. When you click on the word "ENTER" it opens another window to a page with the GOP.COM logo.
Now go to a search engine i.e. yahoo.com, google.com, dogpile.com and type in gop.com. In the search list you will find the actual GOP website which is gop.ORG (gop.org). John Aravosis, the guy who wrote the article, has cleverly created a story that is 100% bogus. I knew I didn't believe it!!!
You people got all worked up for NOTHING!!!! DUH!!!!!

Don't know if I'll be back or not- my first impression hasn't gone so well as you can probably see.
Try harder next time, troll.
And real grown up that there 'troll' reference. I came to this site at the behest of a blogger- what a wonderful ambassador you make. Do you insult all newcomers? Kinda defeats the purpose of having a website doesn't it? Spammer. ;) lol
Regardless, plain and simple, you did not fact check before you posted, and incredibly, it still seems like you are clinging to the belief that the GOP's website is spoofed.
And before you start saying someone should grow up, why not use words other than "DUH!!!!!"
Any bets on where http://www.gop.com/ goes to?
Just for shits and giggles, try http://www.gop.org/ and compare the two.
Idiot.
I mean... if we're talking about being "grown up," lets strive for not bigoted as well.

Then, type in the site:
http://www.whois.sc/gop.org
http://www.whois.sc/gop.com
http://www.whois.sc/gop.gov (if it exists), etc.
This link, http://www.whois.sc/WEBSITE.COM
is an excellent way to identify spam sites, etc.
namely: http://www.scribd.com/doc/13077896/RNC-Website-RFP.
just sayin'.
I think I read that in "Duh" magazine.
I've own the Knotty boys book, nice safe instruction so everyone can play safely. The Shabari books looks like the same, you will get possibly irreperable under arm injuries if you do Shabari ties wrong. I guess Republicans want to have fun too, and well safety first. :-)
If I had to choose - I'd rather be raped than killed. But why are you trying to divert attention to something that's worse? There is nothing worse than what these people have done throughout their history and are doing now to kill INNOCENT people. Worse - Under Bush they became TAX EXEMPT! "under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3)." GOOGLE that! They and the other hate groups are official members of the far right (so-called Christian) right wing extremists and are the primary domestic terrorists of the United States.
I have literally risked my life for white people that I did not even know simply because I can't tolerate being a witness to people being abused. Should I regret that?
Of them, I recommend the "2 knotty boys show you the ropes".
Also, the main page clearly displays the word "beta", a common software industry term meaning "not ready."
Here: http://www.examiner.com/x-13572-RNC-Examiner~y2...
I particularly liked the last line of the article; I am not sure what to make of the fact that the RNC programmers never thought to search for pornographic images, but liberal web site columnists did.
