AMERICAblog: Sarah Palin doesn't know much about a lot of things. But, Sarah Palin knows how to debate.

Just watched a video of her speech yesterday (I think). Her pregnant daughter was standing behind her looking like a prop. Why isn't this girl in school?

I think that was the middle daughter. Did she look pregnant too?

Sarah Palin has spent nearly her entire life in the Mat-Su valley of Alaska. She has a zero fund of knowledge. Yes, she knows how speak publicly, having been a sports caster. Yes, she has a populist knowedge of Alaska issues. She has zero fund of knowledge about national and international issues. You can't make up for that in a national debate. If she is pressed for specifics, she will bomb. Someone I know who has worked with her, said she became angry and petulant at press conferences when asked to respond directly with specifics, even on Alaska issues.
  • brb915 · 1 year ago
Agreed x 10. Color coded cue cards? Do ya'll actually think she would have the guts to appear in front of Gwen Ifill, let alone the little camera light representing millions of people with crib notes??????? THis debate lasts for 90 MINUTES. That's NINETY MINUTES people. THese questions, if I know Gwen's modus, will be in depth, nuanced, and comprehensive. Biden will speak to these queries from what he has WITNESSED and DONE. Miss Wasilla Eightywhatever will try to answer from a cheat sheet?? She's done folks----done.

Yet,the Rethugs want to make fun of Obama all of the time for using a teleprompter.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Its not just that Biden knows too much, but he has a tendency to SAY too much. Biden, on the other hand, is a TALKING POINT machine. Its all she has... I'm worried about the debate because if they ask Palin questions she has practiced then she will look upbeat and professional. We can hope they ask her stuff she has not had a chance to think about that forces her to think on her feet. She seems to stumble the greatest when she is asked to be original.
  • luvboxer · 1 year ago
How stupid do you think the american people are. She is down in the polls. This is another ploy by the McCain campaign to get a joust in the polls.

I still say Biden needs to go after her big time. Like I said she wants to play with the big boys...let's play. This is crazy our country is in a meltdown and all you talk about is Palin...
  • cmpnwtr · 1 year ago
Getting the word out about the rape kit charge is paying off. Planned Parenthood is now running Ads on Sarah Palin's policy at Wasilla and attaching it to McCain's voting record in the Senate on the same issue.

I thing I've noticed about Palin is when she has a Talking Point line down, she pretends that she is thinking of it for the first time. She acts like its original. Of course, her tricks became tired fairly rapidly on the blanket coverage of the campaign trail. In a debate, though, she might be able to fake her way through it. She relies on being able to act like she has to "think and respond" to questions that are already memorized talking points.
  • Milli · 1 year ago
Palin did well in Alaska because she knows Alaska. She knows crap about being vice president (or president). I'm not worried about this debate unless Bush lends her his ear piece from the 04 debates.........
  • okojo · 1 year ago
She knows anecdotal knowledge and her own everyday experience. She doesn't know policy, or can formulate a policy brief. She has something that a Yale grad and Harvard MBA, President Bush has that is a horrible drawback, intellectually incurious.

I think her biggest problem and this comes from the LA Times article talking to her former campaign aides. She has a very short attention span.. I think she blew the Couric interviews because she was way too confident that she could wing it, and she seems a slave to her index cards.

here is the LA Times article...

You know, I keep hearing similar things about how good she was in the Alaska debates. My thinking is this: These are not debates on issues affecting Alaska, a place she had lived her entire life. A state she (I assume) knew like the back of her hand. This isn't a "Gubernatorial" debate, it's a debate about being Vice President and potentially President.

She is going to be in way over head. The world is a very complex place, or as Dumbya puts it, "it's hard work"...she can't possibly be prepared for the things and issues that might come up during the debate (unless of course the moderator throws softballs). She might even have to respond to something that Biden brings up and the Moderator asks her to follow up on something she doesn't know a thing about.

But yeah, the pundits seem to be spinning the lowered expectations line. I have a feeling the Russia from Alaska comment will be brought up and she's going to have to clarify that and we're going to get another rambling statement about airspace and narrow maritime borders...when in reality there is no valid answer to such a stupid comment, but she'll make the best of it and the spinmeisters and pundits will declare how well she held her own, and come Friday morning they'll be declaring victory.

p.s. And CUE CARDS? Really? Oh please PLEASE bring cue cards to the debate...

Wouldn't it be just too delicious if the media somehow exposed the backstage
crew coaching her....rather like when Toto pulls back that shimmering satin
curtain inside the Wizard's lair...and as her earpiece goes dead, watch her
speech patterns turn into Alaskan-Drivel and have Gwen Ifil freaking out?
Tiny Fey are you hearing this? You are so identical to her, we could set up
a shot that looks real and then send it out on YouTube till November 4th.
Too evil? Karl Rove would do it for McSame if he could. The day when
Democrats being using such tactics, will be the day they get back our
    government.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
Indeed, if they had the ability, they could turn it on and off at crucial moments...;)
  • Lolis · 1 year ago
I don't see why people are freaking out about the Palin debate. This is her task: to convince America she has enough foreign and domestic policy knowledge to be Vice President and convince America that John McCain is the better candidate. Do you really think she can do both those things?

Biden's job is to destroy the McCain-Palin policies and tie them to Bush and the failure of the last eight years.

Biden has a much easier job. He has shown on the trail that he is passionate and likable as a speaker. Biden will do very well.
  • barts · 1 year ago
If she's sucha great debater then why did she fuck up during Couric's interview? Why did she need "daddy" by her side in case Couric asked her another one of those 'gotcha' questions?

If you need more examples, well...I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.

I'm not too worried. McCain's becoming meaner, nastier and more arrogant and looking older and feebler by the hour. He'll do himself in without her help.

Senator Joe Biden is a statesman. Caribou Barbie is a hockey mommy. This spin about her debate skills is laughable. The girl does not even know how to find all fifty states on a map. The very fact that this debate is even happening with Joe and this chick is just plain absurd to start with. He will clean the floor with her. Caribou Barbie is not qualified to run our local PTA.

Nice try here,Joe. Trying to control the expectations game. Expect that Palin will do well and we can all act surprised and pleased when she doesn't.

I think John McCain needs to be checked out by a doctor. He is speaking now, and he is slurring his words. Is he experiencing mini-strokes? Watching him attempt to speak LIVE on MSNBC in Missourri right now. He doesn't look good, either.

"The Blessed Sarah" was anointed by the Christian Right to electrify and energize that base of the Republican party then divinely forced upon a reluctant, limp and shameless Republican nominee. This she had accomplished. No question.

If "The Blessed Sarah" isn't looking at her watch during the debate she will steer every answer to her stand on abortion regardless of the question. National security? Abortion! Gwen. National economy? Abortion! Gwen. Immigration? Abortion! Gwen. Infrastructure? Abortion! Gwen.

And the Christian Right will blindly obey in droves at the ballot box with their own particular brand of joy in their hearts.

Sure it's possible, but we're not talking about a press conference or sit-down with a journalist (although THOSE are events where she's come across as looking idiotic, too). This is a debate, and she will have an opponent. Sure some people will assume that as long as she doesn't wind up on stage with toilet paper on her shoe, then she's "won." There will be spin that she is the victor no matter what happens. But with so many news networks with so much time to kill, eventually, they're going to look at what she said, how she said it and what Biden said and how he said it. No matter how not-stupid Palin manages to look, if Biden comes across sounding more-polished, more reasoned, more diplomatic, more (vice) presidential, then the only weapons at her disposal are her snarky soundbites - which increasingly play poorly outside the base -and her feminine wiles - which we keep being told by the McCain campaign to ignore, she's a competent qualified candidate and gender has nothing to do with it damn it! And the fact that they keep saying "Lay off her, she's just a girl" when she looks stupid doesn't factor into my opinion.

I'm treating her like any other politician, and based on what I've heard her say and how she's said it, she's way out of her league. Whether America decides that they like rooting for someone who's out of their league - if they want to treat this level of high office as seriously as they do a Rocky sequel - remains to be seen.

Sarah Palin is the ultimate Fox News candidate. Like many of the newscasters both on FNC and Fox's affiliates, she's a very pretty face who acts like she's eager to charm you. She's not afraid to be mean to "the other guy" if it plays well to the room she's in, or in other words, she can throw lots of red meat to the GOP faithful. She comes across as strong to women looking for role models, and a "prize" to blue-collar men who like their women to enjoy hunting and fishing and sports and drinking, but who can clean themselves up real purty-like. And I'm sure, in a traditional red state like Alaska, that sort of approach plays very well. But (hopefully) the Fox news candidate isn't necessarily what all of America is looking for. We here in the lower 48 have a lot of questions about Sarah, and her answers are so evasive, they not only answer the questions, they necessitate MORE questions.

I said it elsewhere, but I really hope Biden pulls no punches with her in the debate. My thinking is, no matter how deferential he or respectful he is, if he were to come across as a castrati, the right will STILL say he was TOO rough, TOO mean on the li'l philly they specifically chose to be rough & mean to the Democrats. As far as I'm concerned, if he's gonna do the time in their eyes, he might as well commit the crime. Much like the Gilbert Gottfried approach to comedy - keep hammering a joke, milking a punchline until it becomes funny all over again - I hope Biden is so relentless on Palin that even if there were a few momenets of the audience going "wow, that was kinda rough," by the end they come back around to "that was all spot-on. All of that needed to be said." Here's hoping.

A perfect example of this was Andrea Mitchell on The Chris Matthews show this past weekend. She actually said that this debate is not about governing, it's about politics and because of that Palin will do well because she can evade a question and just connect on a personal level with the viewers. Uh, Ms. Mitchell, it's YOUR JOB as a journalist to then analyze the debate and point out that Palin never answered a question and that all she did was play politics when it's her job to govern.

As long as Palin comes across as charming, the media will call it a tie, a tie means Palin wins.
  • tacoeatingzebra · 1 year ago
ARGH! i can't stand andrea mitchell.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Excellent point tommy: It's the job of the journalist to keep pressing for answers. On the other hand, her tie with Joe Biden will cause us to look at how debates are formatted from this point on. Think about it! She can't win, even if it appears she wins.

Evading a question will be the focus of the next big media spin. If the moderator does her job and asks follow up questions like Couric did, Palin will be exposed. We all know it, Republicans, Dems, the MSM--everybody knows she bombs when a question is asked that demands a real answer!
  • Rab · 1 year ago
Tina Fey has destroyed any credibility Palin had. People remember comedy, good comedy and her reputation is trash. Even if the talking heads talk nice about her it will still be a fact : She has not done 1 press conference since being the nominee. Biden is a veteran senator who has been in the spotlight many times and while he has screwed up occasionally he'll do fine. He's running to replace repug policy and the chimp, all he needs to do is remind people of the last 8 years.
  • freshpaint · 1 year ago
If we keep lowering expectations, she'll be fawned upon if she can answer what her favorite color is. If expectations are high, there's no way she can meet them.

Same for Biden. If everyone thinks Biden will do a shitty job and he doesn't, he wins.

Realistically, though, saying her name isn't enough. The punditry isn't in love with her anymore. They are waiting for a chance to pounce. We're all hungry for it -- Democrats, media, right wingers disenchanted with her or always opposed to McCain. Even if she doesn't gaffe it will be at best an evening of almost unmangled platitudes and insubstantial gosh, ehs? She's not up to the job. Plus, she's been overhandled and pressured the last several weeks behind the scenes, and, field dressing, gun firing spunkiness aside, she faces a very lonely walk, alone, onto the set to lay eyes on Joe Biden for the first time. Sarah Palin does get nervous. The hands start flying. The frantic effort to recall her lines. This may not be an Irwin Allenesque disaster, but man, is it gonna be fun! And the specter of Tina Fey hangs over it all... Like Christmas come early!
  • okojo · 1 year ago
She seems good at rote memorization, she seems really bad at actually specifics, or even understanding her answers. She can't analyse her own answers. The McCain campaign can fill her with briefing books, but what is important is to get her train in how to weigh and judge information.

I don't think she was "over handled" for her interview with Katie Couric. She was way too confident that her answers of idioms and slogans would placate Couric. What Couric exposed is that Palin doesn't even know detail of her own answers.

Now, this may sound sexist of me, but I think having Couric interviewing her, shows that Palin couldn't use charm that may had diverted attention as easily with a male interviewer. Couric was always centering on getting Palin to answer the question and wasn't sidetracked.

I would take a Rovian approach in dealing with Palin, attack her on her "strongest" points: Energy. Attack her on home heating oil, strategic reserve, natural gas pipeline regulation, environmental regulation and MTBE lawsuit immunity for Oil companies.

"she seems really bad at actually specifics," - that is, she's bad at critical thinking. Many people have good memories but cannot analyze, cannot comprehend cause and effect, and cannot put those pieces into coherent thought. She is sorely lacking.

Righties should stop running to her defense just because they think "she's being picked on." There's good reason the media is chewing her up. One, it's their job - on behalf of the public - to present the good, bad, and the ugly. I need solid information on which to make choices. I want someone at the helm who'll be thoughtful and have leadership qualities. Palin is too much an idealogue to leave behind her childish, unfounded notions and lead. She's a waste of space.

Republicans were plain stupid. You guys could have chosen Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Kay Hutchinson - and many others in a vast pool of accomplished, professional HIGHLY qualified women. Many have successfuly combined careers with a quality personal life. Get real. She looks and acts like a 1970s high school cheerleader who goes on to be prom queen. She's not top banana in a high school - this is prime time and this chick ain't ready.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
    opps, I meant "actual"...

The Republicans couldn't pick any of the women that you mentioned because of one issue: abortion. All of them are pro-choice besides Condoleezza Rice. The Social Conservatives wouldn't support a ticket with a pro choice candidate, which means the Republicans can possilby alienate 25% of their voters.

Allegedly McCain's first pick was Lieberman, but Lieberman was shot
down by Social Conservatives like the Family Research Council, because he may be bloodthirsty for their taste, but he is a bloodthirsty commie.

So cynically, they need to pick a Social Conservative who could shave off some women voters from Obama, and appeal to independents, and the short list gets shorter, which leads to Sarah Palin. Who is completely unqualified. Even if she wins, she will be swept asides so fast, it will make Quayle looked like he was a major player in the first Bush Administration. She doesn't have the organization nor the political hacks to help her out, like Cheney did with his AEI ties.

I thought this pick was always a boneheaded move, because Alaska is a quirky isolated state.

Biden and Obama's people have studied these debates and I bet they called Halcro and Knowles.

Trust them. Biden is less sure than Obama, but they have known what they were doing eversince the beginning.

There is a big difference in debating in front of Alaskan pop. and debating in front of the American people. I can debate on state issues pretty well and I have an art degree/art background. Put me in front of an international audience I don't think I would hold up so well. Someone like Palin can fancy her way through state politics but I think it stops there.
  • EmGD · 1 year ago
Wait I thought the right wingers already came up with the reason Palin lost the debate that hasn't happened: Gwen Ifill's unrepentant liberal media bias. How am I supposed to reconcile this with the fact that Ifill already destroyed Palin and swore fealty to Joe Biden?

I"m sorry, but I just listened to her debate clip and was not impressed. What you are hearing is someone with less than high school debate skills debateing folks in a state with a population smaller than than Nassau county, New York. I'm sorry, but this is a two industry state, maybe three, and it doesn't take a rocket scientics to know the main issues. It would take your average high school student about two hours to get ready to debate her for the issues she was addressing in her last election and beat her. She is clueless on national and international issues and it will show in about three minutes on Thrusday night.

I am outraged by the wolf massacre now underway in Alaska through the practice of aerial gunning. Numerous scientific studies show that wolves are beneficial to the overall health of natural ecosystems. They help keep Alaska's moose and caribou populations healthy and strong. Wolves are also important to Alaska's billion-dollar tourism industry.

To SARAH PALIN, you Evil Soulless being,
You are a destroyer of animals. By allowing the MURDER of wolves in Alaska and the raping of the Endangered Species Act you are responsible for one of the most despicable acts in the last 240 years. With the current, environment raping, administration, it is no surprise why you were chosen for the post you will hopefully, never hold. You are a sick murdering monster, and have some very interesting morals, none of which are part of God's laws. Animal rights groups are responsible not only for the protection of endangered animals, but also for the creation of programs to protect children. In this way, you evil woman, you are no better than a CHILD ABUSER, BEATER OR RAPIST. You allow the EXPLOITATION of vulnerable populations, that cannot protect themselves. You are a MURDERER and this administration must love you because you are a destroyer of the environment, just like they are. I hope, when you close your eyes to sleep, that you see the death that you promote during the day. Send Mr.Bush and Senator McCain my utter disgust.

Yeah, Biden knows too much. But, at the end of day, it's a good thing. It'll redefine how we conduct debates in this country. The new "debate" will be about whether we're going to allow substance or "frill" to rule the day.

Biden can't lose, even is she plays the game to the best of her abilities. All Biden has to do is win the argument why Obama is better suited to lead. Open up his vast reservoir of knowledge about world affairs, but slant it in the direction that these are views HE shares with Obama. That way, he's selling Obama and letting the world know he's a mental heavyweight all in the same breadth.

Example: "I and Obama agree......" "I share the same views with Senator Obama on......" I'm in full agreement with Senator Obama that we can't afford 4 more years...and here are the reasons why....."

This type of lead-ini allows him to side-step the dummied-down debate format. He can open his knowledge about foreign policy, and Palin wll be asked to make a following comment! This is where she'll flop. This is where it becomes obvious she doesn't have an answer.
  • puppydog · 1 year ago
