AMERICAblog: Saturday Morning Open Thread

I love nature the same way and also on a smaller scale like my container garden. I love watching the wildlife it attracts and during a rainstorm. I sit there and drink some beers and just marvel. I saw a little female green lizard lay some eggs in one the other day. I never thought a lizard could have a personality but this one kinda does. They love the black soldier bugs that emerge from the coffee grinds.

On my agenda: Not spending one red cent. Not using any gasoline.

I try to do that one day a week. So far I've failed every day this week. So I either succeed today or hang my head in shame tomorrow.

I think of it as training for the economy ahead.

On a topic I've mentioned here months ago, an excellent UKGuardian photo essay contrasting the early style of Jackie [O] with Michelle O:

My poem...for children by Langston Hughes called "Garment":

    The clouds weave a shawl
    Of downy plaid
For the sky to put on
    When the weather's bad.

My majesty palm took a big hit this past winter from the below freezing temps but it's putting out fronds again. I just didn't want to drag it in and out with the bugs. I miss Grant discussing gahdening. I hope he's fine.

McNutsy has added a women to his campaign committee.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/06/us/politics/0...

We all remember Carlton Fiorina former head of Hewlett Packard

As a result, Ms. Fiorina has been buzzed about as a potential commerce or Treasury secretary or even as a McCain running mate, although some Republicans close to Mr. McCain swiftly dismiss the idea of her as vice president. But the view within the campaign is that it can only help Mr. McCain’s standing among women to have Ms. Fiorina mentioned as a possibility for high-profile office in a McCain administration.

No wonder McCain likes her, she used illegal wire tapping and hired a security firm to spy on her fellow employees. She would fit right in with McCains slogan---MORE OF THE SAME FROM MCCAIN.

Fantastic! Obama can roll out a stage full of HP folks who lost their jobs under this failure of a CEO.

I'm no fan of Carly, but you are confusing her with her successor, Patricia Dunn. Dunn was the one who had a security firm spy on board members and journalists, not employees.

Having Carly on the ticket isn't going to help with HP employees or former employees, though.

This morning I watched a ring neck pheasant walk through my garden followed by 6 hens. He was in all his glory. Even my outdoor cats won't mess with this gang. I really benefit from the pheasant stocking that goes on at the farm next to mine. Farmer lets a dog and gun club stock pheasant and then go kill them (that part i am not ok with, but) they only kill 3 out of 10 so we have a lot of birds using my woods to hide and raise families in.

They can't stock pheasants here in the South. Something to do with humidity and their eggs. But I have this one tiny male gray sparrow with a little black crest on his head and a very serious look fuss at me everytime I dare walk out on his patio and his bugs. He's glorious in his own way.

We have been hand feeding chickadees and sparrows for a few years. Gotta throw some bread scraps and watch through the door or window then sit on patio and feed him. Then hold the bread or seed in the palm of your hand. Once he sees you are no threat he will land, grab and sit nearby. Soon you will have him sitting on your head or shoulder eating out of your hand. Don't be alarmed if he poops on you shoulder or head. Natural reaction to being fed. I would also recommend putting up a couple of bird feeders. It brings great joy to your heart after a stressful day to see that somethings in life do trust us and aren't threatened.

I have lots of birds as well. If you can, use a sprinkler from time to time in addition to a birdbath (for constant water). Birds love the motion of waterand will cavort in it; also noticed that they congregate after a fresh mowing, too. We have a number of nesting boxes and feeders in the yard and it's great to watch them. There are always a few hopping or flying around it. Birds also like to nest in bushes; we've had a family of mockingbirds in one at the front gate for a few years now as well as cardinals. Next year, we'll wait until the eggs hatch because a cardinal had her nest in a bush outside my kitchen window and my son cut the bush and exposed the nest--mother was stricken and abandoned her eggs. : (

we put up a series of posts around our garden. Post every 8 feet and a crossing 2x4. the garden is 60 x 30 and it goes around the whole garden/ we then attached bird houses every 4 feet and all are filled with wrens, blue birds and sparrows. The noise in the morning and evening is deafening but to be able to sit by my pool and listen is beyond anything. We have also put up a number of winter type nests made from woven hemp. these we put in the evergreens and most have 3 or more birds at night ot keep warm. Nature is the best, no judgements, be kind to them and they repay you. When we moved in 8 years ago the previous owners didn't do much for the bird population. we now have 40 feeders year round. we also have 5 hummingbird feeders using just sugar and hot water. In addition we feed the pheasants and deer with loose corn. We never run off the squirrels they have to survive too. This spring we had a family of racoons move in. they enjoy the dishes set out for our outdoor cats (8) who keep the mice population in check. Last night Mrs. Possum and her new brood walked around the poool while my wive and i sat out in the 85 degree heat (love it). I can't say enough about having nature around you and giving in to just enjoying.
By the way I am sitting by the pool listening to the new Journey cd with their new singer. Started to cry thinking about my youth and how far we have fallen as a nation under Bush. God i hope Americans realize we can really be number 1 without having to kill, maim and invade other countires. All the best O&W. Enjoy the moment.

I think everyone should have a "Peace Garden" a place to appreciate the wonders of nature, the flora and fawna; A place to think of the beauty of mother nature and to love life in all of its' forms. Even potted plants on a window sill can be a peace garden. But unlike the Victory Gardens of our parents/grandparents a Peace Garden would be a small but growing movement for winning world peace instead of world wars.
