AMERICAblog: Saturday Morning Open Thread

    Good morning

There was a comedian I think it was on CNN this week complaining that if Obama gets elected it will be a hard time for comedians....they have had so much material this election season.....(and the last 8 yrs )
  • grandma · 1 year ago
    Herbert in today's NY Times:

The focus in the presidential campaign has been almost entirely on the struggles faced by the middle class —No one knows how to quell the uncertainty. And no one is even talking about the poor.

But if we are indeed caught up in the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression, the ones who will fare the worst are those who already are poor or near-poor. There are millions of them, and yet they remain essentially invisible. A step down for them is a step into destitution.

“I don’t think the health care system can bear another five million or more people uninsured and economically fragile. More people without insurance will crowd into the nation’s hospital emergency rooms when medical problems become too severe to ignore or there is no other access to basic health services. Such a trend will have a seismic impact on our health care system.”

Great new video going around - Its fun and maybe over the top, but I think it sums of some of the feelings being generated by Obama this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3ijYVyhnn0&eurl...

I noticed it on CrooksandLiars.com this morning and I've watched it 3 times already.

The writers of this blog have somewhere misplaced their moral compass. Twice in the last 24 hours they have complained of independent actions taken by the Iraqi government in the best interests of the Iraqi people and Iraq; and the costs associated with rebuilding its institutions including the ability to responsibly and transparently account for its resources (including its oil wealth).

We illegally invaded that country and directly or indirectly permitted the destruction of that nations ability to act independently or manage its resources and treasury. We have a moral obligation to see justice done. That includes paying for the rebuilding of the ability of the government of Iraq to manage its resources and treasury and accepting that at times Iraq's interests may diverge from ours and result in actions different from those we would like undertaken.

Iraq does not owe us. We owe Iraq and the Iraqi people.
  • bumpkis · 1 year ago
    Totally agree.
  • LeeFromHamburgNY · 1 year ago
Actually, Bush and his cronies owe Iraq. I've been against this war since it's inception. I owe the Iraqi people nothing! Unfortunately, though, we'll all end up paying for it...
  • MikeyBackwards · 1 year ago
    Lee,

I understand the anger. However much some of us worked to prevent the war; we failed to do so. As part of the greater American whole, who did permit, even cheer, this illegal invasion and destruction of Iraq, we do owe this debt. I understand how galling this affront and burden that has been laid upon us is. This just makes us co-victims of this illegal action. Any anger should be - as you correctly note; be directed at Bush and his cronies.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I understand your "greater American whole" but still I was not one of the cheering crowds over "shock and awe". it was illegal, it was wrong. My anger is not with Iraq, but with Bush.

Having said that, I wonder when the people of Iraq are going to kick our butts out of their country? After all these years one would think they would want to govern themselves without intervention. How many years is it going to take for the culture of dictatorship to be replaced by a culture of independence?

How much longer do we have to pump our money and resources into a country that hoards their resources and continues to destroy what we've already paid for??? Its time we put our own house in order before its too late...
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
But when they ask us to leave, which they have, and we don't, we are illegal occupants.

America will never move forward until the War Crimes of the Bush administration are dealt with. 100 years from now, if they are still not dealt with, America will continue to pay the price. When you slaughter hundreds of thousands of innocents - the memory of that mass murder will linger for generations to come.
  • Hurrycane · 1 year ago
I feel the same way... I've been puzzled by the vitriol spewed at Iraq here lately.

Interesting article on Palin by Ben Smith over at Political. Some good observations on the increasing riff between Palin and McCain. Basically, Palin is not willing to take the fall for John McCain's poorly run campaign.

John McCain will rue the day he picked, in unbelievable poor judgment, Palin. She is a street fighter and won't go away that easily. She trashed her own party in Alaska to get to the governors mansion. I have no doubts that she will do the same to McCain. it isn't John McCain that pulls the large crowds, it is Palin, she knows it and she will use it to springboard over McCain.

By claiming to be a pitbull with lipstick, isn't she just really saying she's a bitch?

hi girls, love, love, love to all. yes, ALL. including the trannies? Especially the trannies -- noone in this campaign is speaking of trans health issues and trans rights -- and this must change!

girls, even joe the unlicensed plumber cannot deal with all the turds being generated by the mccain campaign. it will be an ugly 10 days, but victory is ours to have - we must work, we must stay focused and we must remind everyone that once again it is the economy, stupid.

love to all girls -- much work to be done; let's do it!!!

My gut is in knots, this election can't come fast enought!! I hope this is like the primary, we thought all that time would be detrimental, when in fact, another week and we could take Georgia and Montana too! I see the polls have solidified, no real movement, I think 50-45 is where it will end up, still, I am on pins and needles!! We so badly need something really GOOD to happen in this world, and Obama's election is that good thing, so good it is scary to hope for!

Does anyone else feel crazy rightnow?
  • grandma · 1 year ago
I just want it to be over now too.....I don't trust anything the GOP might do in the final days to win.
  • MikeyBackwards · 1 year ago
Go to http://www.fivethirtyeight.com for a good dose of comfort. Nate Silver currently shows that based upon current state-by-state polling John McCain has only a 5.1% chance of winning the election. This is determined by running the polling through 10000 separate scenarios per day.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
I'm feeling less crazy than I have since 2000 (but that's not saying much).
  • Patrick_Bateman · 1 year ago
lilybart - I find comfort in knowing all things balance out eventually, albeit somewhat painful at times. The natural order of things tells me that a shift is in the air. Well....a couple of glasses of wine helps ;^) Seriously, I believe in our dear Mother Earth. She will allow only so much desecration before she regains control.

    Re: Jihadist Ashley Todd:

Anyone else involved should be prosecuted too. People should be able to go about their business, whether it's withdrawing money from a bank or voting without being frightened or intimidated.

Was she goaded into being a martyr for the cause? Who funded the operation?

    Is Homeland Security investigating?
  • MikeyBackwards · 1 year ago
While I deplore Ashley Todd's actions, it appears she has a history of mental illness. Even though her acts were dispicable and could have wrought great harm, she is not a jihadist. Just as we rightly assail those whom we oppose when they engage in hyperbole and inflammatory name-calling, we should refrain from the same on our side.

Personally, I feel sorry for Ms. Todd. Both because of her illness and for allowing herself to become so deluded by McCain and his allies that she would be willing to do something like this.

Yes, she should be punished. Yes, those who pushed this story should be excoriated for blindly doing so. But I also hope she receives treatment for her obvious mental illness.

Attack the idea or the deed, not the person. Also, remember that arguing with an idiot only proves he's doing the same thing.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
I'm not attacking her -- the opposite in fact.
  • MikeyBackwards · 1 year ago
I was referring to your use of the name 'jihadist' which has obtained and I read as being used perjoratively in your post.
  • Hurrycane · 1 year ago
    Well said. I agree.

Rich Warren announces support for Prop 8

"For 5,000 years, every culture and every religion -- not just Christianity -- has defined marriage as a contract between men and women, Warren wrote. There is no reason to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2% of our population."

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20081024/pl_usnw/n...

Equal rights for ALL is appeasement according to him.
  • Fireblazes(CheetohsandCatfood) · 1 year ago
His assertion is false. It is a strawman argument.
  • therepguy · 1 year ago
At the Huffington Post the headline reads...

    INCREASINGLY GLOOMY...
Republicans are increasingly nervous heading into the campaign's final week -- and their jitters have little to do with John McCain.

Most of the party's top strategists expect significant losses in House and Senate races, with some predicting Democrats could cross the 60-seat mark in the Senate.

THEY SHOULD BE AND THATS A GOOD THING...

THEY TOOK THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR GRANTED AND WROTE THEN OFF... NOW THERE REAPPING THERE REWARD!

Obama lead slips to 9 point ... Zogby said. "What's important here is that this race is not over."
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
According to Newsweek poll today, Obama has a 12 pt lead...and 9 pts is NOT too shabby, either. Zogby--what else can you say?
  • Fireblazes(CheetohsandCatfood) · 1 year ago
I know, Zogby is being referred to as an outlier this year. It is in Zogbys interest, like the msm, to keep it a horse race. That said, he is right that the race will tighten somewhat just before the election. But I disagree with his 16% undecided statement. More like 8%. Everyone just needs to keep calling their friends and neighbors and make sure they have voted.

TODAY TEXT ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND ASK THEM IF THEY HAVE VOTED!
If they haven't gather them up and take them to early voting TODAY!
  • therepguy · 1 year ago
Zogby didn't ask me, so that poll is incorrect to say the least!
  • therepguy · 1 year ago
Calling ones friends and neighbors to make sure they have voted for Obama and company ...can be life threating at times down here in backward Texas!
