AMERICAblog: Saxby Chambliss won the Georgia Senate runoff

  • Lolis · 1 year ago
Not a big surprise. The Obama effect really got Martin a lot of votes and that just wasn't gonna happen in the run-off.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
Exactly. It was a losing proposition. Think about it. Georgia. They're still pissed off down there that they got their butts kick in the Civil War.
  • BarbaraGordon · 1 year ago
I do not understand why Obama didn't go to GA to campaign for Martin since getting the 59th/60th seat was so important.

I cannot stand Chambliss because of his ads against Cleland.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
I saw someone talking about this point the other night. The general consensus was that

    A) Obama couldn't be seen as being 'distracted' from working on economic plans and building his cabinet in order to go campaign;
    B) If Martin lost by a large margin (which he apparently has) it could be used to argue that Obama didn't have as much 'capital' or 'mandate' as was believed (though I personally wouldn't have bought into that for a minute);
    C) If Obama campaigned against Saxby and Saxby ended up winning, it would not make for much of a bipartisan relationship in case Obama needed to pressure Saxby for some future vote (i.e. "I didn't personally help campaign against you, so help me with this vote").

Probably smart advice all the way around. I can just imagine the field day the Right would be having if Obama had campaigned heavily and then Martin lost.

Dammit. Well, we can't win all the slave states.

    .
Oh, well. At least we got rid of this butthead. Sid Vicious even sings about it.

A lot of the Georgians who voted for Obama last month sat on their hands this time.

    Kind of pisses me off.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
If that's true, it really amazes me how hopelessly ignorant they are.
  • green_libertarian · 1 year ago
Yes, let's blame the black folk.

    SOP.
  • Obamalover · 1 year ago
The African American community only cares about themselves. They hate bigotry against the African American community but are willing to pile on the gay community. They vote for a black candidate but then sit on their hands when a white candidate needs them to come out and vote.

A lot of it has to do with their hate filled churches.
  • green_libertarian · 1 year ago
How many gay folk couldn't be bothered to vote on Prop. 8 as they were imbibing in their "hate-filled" gay bars and parties, bashing breeders? Just as utterly ridiculous as your assertions.

Do you have ANY understanding of group dynamics as it pertains to voter turnout? No? What a surprise.
  • Obamalover · 1 year ago
You are so ignorant. Gay people don't bash "breeders", they bash bigots.

And I can assure you that a much higher percentage of gays came out to vote for Barack Obama in Georgia than blacks did for Martin.

Moreover, I have an understanding of how the religious institutions inculcate bigotry into their poor and uneducated flocks. So this really has more to do with religion than anything, since most blacks attend church regularly.

    pisses me off too!

I'm wondering if an Obama appearance might have made a difference.
  • necer23 · 1 year ago
What do you expect....Obama and other big names stayed away and let this happen....Lord knows I am glad we have Obama and I believe he will be great but not going was a mistake that will cost him.
  • kafka · 1 year ago
Martin was a weak weak candidate.
  • Freday63 · 1 year ago
Once again the state of GA on the wrong side of history...

What the hell kind of a name is SAXBY CHAMBLISS?

Can't Repugs come up with normal names?
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
So let em filibuster a couple of times. When they don't get any legislation passed, he'll get strongarmed into caving. You can't tell me that one lone senator can do that much to hold up passing legislation with a 58-59 majority. C'mon
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
did you know that one of the owners of a gay republican political blog (which I won't name here) named his dog 'saxby' in honor of the good senator?
  • Deacon_Blues · 1 year ago
Let's face it, scum rises to the top.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Thank goodness! Can you imagine Georgia representatives as fair-minded and tolerant? I can't either, the paradigm shift would have been too much, nobody would've believed it. This way, we've got open bigotry on the shelf where we can see it. That's reasonable. And now we watch . . .
  • kafka · 1 year ago
The GOP here in Georgia is full of self righteous SOBs. They'll vote against their interests just so they don't have to change. I do love seeing all the mccain/palin bumbper stickers. I always say to myself, "how that work out for you?"
  • Obamalover · 1 year ago
This is because the democrats can't get dirty. Chambliss got 5 deferments during Vietnam, bashed his triple amputee opponent in '02, and is currently running against another Vet. Call him out on it. Call him a coward and say he hates vets. Martin knew he wouldn't win by playing nice, instead he wasted DNC resources on a losing campaign.
  • kafka · 1 year ago
Saxby is on my TeeVee right now. Ew.
  • kafka · 1 year ago
The dems didn't get dirty at all. It was like the 2002 election. I still think Martin was weak. I am a rabid dem and I really didn't get Martin.
  • Pechorin · 1 year ago
The only way to straighten out a shithole like Georgia is to send Sherman back there.
  • sisterfaith · 1 year ago
Please Pechorin......not all of us voted for the ass.

The special interests hate groups spent millions here sending out trash....some days just prior to the runoff, I'd get 3 or 4 fliers.....and several robo calls.....from U.S. Chamber of Commerce.....Fred Thompson.....etc.

And of course they brought in Moose Girl....
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Just blame the poor uneducated mass of ball cap-wearing rednecks...the cow-like audience of inverted conformists the Caribou Barbie Effect was designed for.
Thank God the inbred corporate media is ever closer to its collapse...But, there still might be time for yet another circa 1981 CNN special eyeball-rolling series on UFOs.
  • green_libertarian · 1 year ago
The fact that a Dem even got close (Nov. 4th) in GA is a fucking miracle. The results of this run-off election are no surprise whatsoever, to those paying attention.
  • High Crimes & Misdemeanors · 1 year ago
So does this mean that lieberman becomes irrelevant???
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
He's got several Dems by the nads. He'll always be relevant.
  • Pixie · 1 year ago
I fail to see how this even REMOTELY matters. Do you think for a moment if the Democrats had a 60 vote majority that they would EVER vote as a block? THEY NEVER HAVE. There will always be blue dogs that go to vote with Republicans to ensure that a progressive agenda is never enacted. At least this way, without 60 votes, the Democrats can cravenly whine that the mean old Republicans threatened to filibuster which is why Harry Reid did away with the proposal without actually forcing the Republicans to filibuster.
