AMERICAblog: SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters

  • Buford · 1 year ago
So how does the church that this judgmental piece of crap represents maintain a tax-free status when spouting this type of garbage? I'm confident that he'll be judged harshly by whatever powers exist once he 'crosses over', but a little justice while he's still here would be nice, too.
  • Baal · 1 year ago
Tax free status was my thought too. Unfortunately there is no such thing as hell and there is no god. Could use one right about now. So we better get some retribution in the here and now.

What, is he going to consult the Urim and Thummim to know who voted for Obama?

I am so tired of these religious bigots, racist, homophobes and SINNERS!!!
  • RainbowPhoenix · 1 year ago
Things like this are the reason people like me keep leaving the church.
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
A few generations ago he probably would have refused communion to black worshipers.
  • cjbrdwng · 1 year ago
It's time to go after these Catholic Churches that pull this stuff. Telling members that they can't receive communion, or even denying it to Senator Kerry (as they did in 2004) is a direct political statement against them. It is explicitly against the IRS tax code and they should have their tax exemption revoked.

The "Church" is pissed because it was unable to stop the vote for Obama.
Why on earth would we ever listen to a bunch of pedophiles?
Like the Mormons, these jerks are hypocrites.
  • reelactor · 1 year ago
I think its high time to demand a few things from the Catholic clergy. What about outlawing annulment? the most hypocritical instrument in the Catholic church. How about support for a Constitutional amendment to outlaw divorce? How about a commitment from the Pope to oppose the death penalty? Knowing that none of that would happen, how about an amendment to lock up Catholic priests who molest for life? How about a minimum $1 million for each person molested by a clergy member?
The people of this country need to deliver a firm message to the church. Back off or crumble.
  • kevinbgoode · 1 year ago
How about demanding their churches be registered on the sex offender directory.
  • curlytoes79 · 1 year ago
Spiritual blackmail. Maybe if a large mass of Obama-supporting Catholics stopped going to church (i.e., stopped tithing) or just said, "Oh well, I guess I'll convert my family to Unitarianism," the priests might think twice.
  • Joneses · 1 year ago
The Bishops, Priests, higher up Catholic persons have their marching orders from the Pope.

The members of the Catholic Religion have their trust in God. Go Obama!

i'm more encouraged every day that prop 8 will be struck down. here's part of a post over at open left:
"In 1990, California voters passed Proposition 115 (the Crime Victims Justice Reform Act) - a conservative 'law-and-order' measure that said certain criminal defendants would not have more rights than provided by the U.S. Constitution. Prop 115 had passed as an amendment, but the state Supreme Court called it a 'revision.' Why? Because ... Prop 115 had 'such a far-reaching change in our governmental framework as to amount to a qualitative constitutional revision, an undertaking beyond the reach of the initiative process.' Prop 115 adversely affected a defendant's right to due process, equal protection, assistance of counsel, and the standards for 'cruel and unusual punishment' - which effectively made it a 'revision.'"

Did you see this video of a woman being chased out of her church for supporting Obama? Good god, these priests need to go.

Yes Yes Yes, this was reviewed and discussed before the prop hate (8) election. Can't take the right from certain people without taken rights from all the people!
  • okojo · 1 year ago
Gee there goes the conservative argument that "People have spoken" and we should accept the will of the people on the subject of Gay Marriage and Prop 8... Of course that argument is thrown out of the window, when the subject of abortion pops up....

I don't see this as part of a wayward priest, the Catholic Bishops have been saber rattling for a couple days about this since the Presidential election.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
even if voting for obama is a sin, my catholic friends insist that there is no church teaching that sinners should be excluded from communion. this guy is making it up as he goes along (and it takes a bishop to excommunicate).
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
when do we start revoking tax-free status? when if ever?
  • caphillprof · 1 year ago
Does transubstantiation occur when the consecration is by a priest who molests little boys? Many god-fearing Catholics have been denied true communion for decades.
  • thincaboutit · 1 year ago
The election is over. Let the post election parodies begin!! See “Why Can’t We (at least pretend to) Be Friends?” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkS6qZg4mo4
  • paul94611 · 1 year ago
I suppose one of the primary reasons the Catholic clergy opposes abortion is because is lessens their supply of fresh kids to molest.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
This is such bullshit. If he wants to talk about sin, what about denying communion to all who voted for the murderer Bush who mass and serially murdered 1.3 million innocent Iraqi citizens as well as 4,200 American soldiers, a couple hundred thousand more Afghani citizens and several hundred more American soldiers in that country. Naw! Can't mix politics and religion. I love the Catholic Church, but so many of it's leaders have gone over to the service of the dark side. As for Ratman, my guess is that he is equal in rank to Bush as one of Satan's highest lieutenants.

Shit, I'm glad my religion doesn't have elements like this. Everyone receives the blessing at prayer services no matter who you are, no questions asked.

So sad watching these geriatric religious fundamentalists rail against what they do not understand and tie that back to being “Christian”. It’s very simple, they are racists.
I am so glad that the U.S. is finally entering the 21st century. Watching these husks of human beings fade into irrelevance will be so enjoyable.

I cannot believe that people are that "brain dead" to believe what a priest would say. I f only all people would remember that God does not judge, and everyone is equal in his eyes. Also, what a women does is her private business. Who is a man to say what a woman should do with her body. Shame on that priest! And I suppose this is why my grandmother in the 1950's left the catholic church because she felt that the priests were "fooling around" if you know what I mean, with my aunts, and she felt that they tried to control people's lives.

On the same page with this story is a news video of a woman who was thrown out of her church on the Sunday after the election and forced to move her SUV, that had Obama written on the windows, off the property. Then when a newspaper reporter ask him for a comment he verbally and physically assaulted him. The reporter filed charges.

And Tony Perkins is complaining about the way gay people are protesting and picketing OUTSIDE of churches and hurting and scaring the congregants. Tony needs to be more concerned about the abuse their getting INSIDE their churches from their own pastors, priests and fellow members.

SC has always been rather medieval. And the catholic church hasn't always been welcome, either. But they always knew they fit in, even if the Baptists didn't think they did.

Any questions about anyone who left the catholic church should be answered with this article.
  • SCLiberal · 1 year ago
I live in SC and it is positively medieval. While on the phone long distance with a vendor a while back the person asked what time it was here. I answered, "1962".
  • truebluecoondog · 1 year ago
I live in SC as well. I am not surprised to hear this kind of bull crap coming out of SC churches but I AM surprised that it's not a Baptist Church doing the finger wagging. I can see the Mountain Vew Baptist Church Mega-tron from my house. Such a display of negative affirmations I have never before seen.

There is an apt treatment for those who disobey Christ's teachings. When Pope Boniface VIII stuck his nose into French politics in 1303, Philip IV had his people surprise the pontiff at Agnani, beat him up, and nearly executed him. The Catholic prelates deserve the equivalent. Such bullying is the reason I left in 1991. They destroyed my faith after 32 years. Maybe I'll join the UCC, just to defy them further. I was thinking of Matthew Shepard's Episcopalians as well.
  • TampaZeke · 1 year ago
We in the UCC would welcome you with open arms and without ANY judgement. We don't tolerate ANYONE in our church. We CELEBRATE EVERYONE.

If it weren't for the UCC I would have abandoned Christianity and all spirituality years ago. In fact I did just that and was only drawn back when I found the UCC. As a Buddhist Christian I'm convinced that the UCC is the Buddhist branch of the Christian faith.

You will not find a more progressive, mainline Christian denomination ANYWHERE: first to ordain an African-American; first to ordain a woman and first to ordain an openly gay man and passed a resolution supporting FULL marriage equality, both civil and religious, for GLBT people at the General Synod of 2005.

Oh, and by the way, Obama is UCC. I don't believe for one minute that he REALLY believes that marriage should be only between a man and a woman. Don't forget that Gore said that too and Dean said that too but now both admit that they support marriage equality.

It's 2008. Why do people still flock to priests and hang on their every word? Why do people bother with these churches? Can't we come up with some better myth to deal with our anxiety over mortality?

This is forming into a repeat of Pre-civil war rhetoric. Then it was slavery or states rights, now it is whatever. These are enslavers. They need only an excuse. Enslavers just the same. Agitators are using the first amendment to make hate an everyday event. This guy's own parish should be kicking him out. They have found their leader. imagine millions with god on their side, this time focusing on a "Black President"; and what violence can come to us? Think it can't happen? Remember on the night of Obama's win, a church was torched in Springfield, Massachusetts. Don't forget the primaries in Kentucky and Tennessee. Don't forget the pre election hate. The heartland vote. Add economic stress and a media that cares only for selling, and how do you stop the powder keg from filling?
  • Milli · 1 year ago
But its ok to support Bush or McCain, who invaded a foreign country for greed and either killed or displaced millions of people. Yeah. Here's a big middle finger to the hypocritical religious freaks.

    THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST.

Check it out. You will be AMAZED! I know I was.
  • TampaZeke · 1 year ago
Check out these UCC websites to get a taste.

    ucc.org

    GodIsStillSpeaking.com

or the website of my local church in Tampa:

ucctampabay.org (click on any picture on the intro page to enter the site) Be sure to read the church's resolution against Amendment 2. It was passed by our 90% straight congregation UNANIMOUSLY and later passed by the entire state conference. Forgive me if I'm particularly proud of it; I wrote it.
  • TampaZeke · 1 year ago
To see the resolution, and a picture of the ten foot banner that we staked in front of our church that said, "ANOTHER Christian Church AGAINST Discrimination, Vote NO on Amendment 2!" click on the link under "We've been working for peace, justice, and inclusion since 1885!"

There's a lot of good information in there about what this congregation and this denomination are about. If you are at all inclined to the Christian faith, or feel that the faith left you behind when it became the faith of exclusion and hate, you might be surprised to find that there is a very different kind of Christian church out there.

And with that I'm done with the sales pitch!
  • RIPWAMU · 1 year ago
Here's a big middle finger salute to those of you who lambasted me the other day for "criticizing" and being "bitter" about Catholicism. This is just one of many reasons why I don't practice organized religion of any sort.

These hypocritical asswipes need to have their tax exempt status challenged and revoked.
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
And the Catholic Church wonders why people don't go to church any longer.
  • Eyeball_Kid · 1 year ago
When moderate Catholics hold out hope that, one day, a more reasonable voice emanates from the seats of power within the church, it's actions like this that snuff out that hope. The bishop in South Carolina has singlehandedly done irreparable damage to Catholic parishes everywhere by his demagoguery and diplomatic stupidity. He is not God. He does not speak for God. Yet he postures as one who speaks for God. Catholics everywhere can see right through his bigotry as a sour grapes moralist. His superiors ought to have a little talk with him, and let him know how much money his tirade is costing parishes everywhere.
  • truebluecoondog · 1 year ago
I'm thinking; let's ALL go to Catholic church this Sunday and get in line for communion.
  • mwestorca · 1 year ago
Get it straight: this was a parish priest, not a bishop. He exceeded his authority and will no doubt be hearing from his bishop about it.

Every Catholic knows that his/her own conscience is paramount, so he/she doesn't need to listen to this priest if the vote was made in good conscience. The priest doesn't know who voted how, so unless you come to communion wearing an Obama T-shirt, no one is going to deny you communion.

It's offensive to me as a Catholic that this priest made that statement. It's offensive to me that my own priest implied as much before the election (he stayed within the correct IRS boundaries, though). But he didn't stay within the guidelines provided by the Catholic bishops of America which laid out the steps by which one forms his/her own conscience.

But Catholic laypeople don't follow like blind sheep - that's why we helped to elect Obama. I couldn't have voted for McCain in good conscience because I felt that the outcome of his presidency would have been more war, less care for the poor, and more abortions!

And I know lots of priests who would have taken the opposite viewpoint to this guy in S.Carolina - it's a very big church, with lots of people - good people, not so good people, misguided people, journeying people - people like Joe Biden, God bless him!

    My comment to papa Jay:

Jay, you're just another case of clergy blinded by political righteousness. The fact that your parish once harbored a sexual predator has not humbled you.
The Bible and Jesus have not helped to educate you in the fine art of humility either. A shepherd leads by example, and you chose to model intolerance, as if you were God himself. As a Catholic, I am ashamed for you.
