AMERICAblog: Schumer urges Obama to hit back harder
PhilipGraham
Oh yes, and here's why. If you have a friend, and he does something bad, how do you respond? Probably something like, "Oh, he had a bad day," or "Oh, he's wasn't really himself when he did that," etc. And what if you enemy does something good, how do you react? Probably: "He's still an asshole!"
Once you're set in stone, you're set in stone. That's why Dukakis and Kerry couldn't recover. McCain is trying to set Obama in stone. He takes this lightly at his own--and our--peril.
Õ¿Õ

After much consideration, I think the Obama campaign should begin hitting back with everything they've got, which is McShrub's record. And not just one ad, and then wait and see how it plays. I mean one after another after another. Blowing and going, ripping and running with them.
Sage24

I agree. The vicious attacks are an effort to define Obama, before the convention, and before he introduces himself to the nation.
Obama has to fight back. Kerry and Gore were made into caricatures. Gore was made into a serial exaggerater, and Kerry an elitist. The irony is, brainless Americans, bought it, and voted for the corrupt, frat boy, who thinks that looking for WMD's in the Wh, whilst our troops were being killed, was a huge joke, and that making gas companies richer is the best economic policy. Obama HAS to learn from past mistakes made by other Democratic candidates. Obama has the funds, and one of the smartest campaign teams, and hopefully, when the time is right, they will start counter attacking.

Anyone watching this on CNN, Russia has invaded Georgia. Apparently some planes have already been shot down and American forces are "counting heads" to account for US personal.

What the fuck are there any of our troops in Georgia?

I know GG. I was wondering that too. It was interesting to hear the announcer state the US was "counting heads" to account for everyone. Then they described Georgia as "a close ally of the US."

This is what happens when you invade a country, like Iraq, by lying and saying its all going to be a "cake walk." We can't fight a war on THREE fronts, and Russia knows it. Bu$h deserves Leavenworth.

I would go after McCain on what he considers to be his strong suit, veteran affairs. McCain's voting record with veterans has been abysmal. And no one from the Obama camp seems to take any interest in this key issue.

Facts that are clean, concise, short and name the day, hour, minute and place the lie was told by the opponent.

Indeed. There's a ton of factual ads that could be produced that would destroy McCain.

Yes, Philip Graham; Actual video clips with his own words will be more than sufficient to sink him. I can think of at least three examples of McCain showing his deer- in -the- headlights mentality. He will be ruined by a repeated showing of HIS OWN INCOMPETENCE. Bring on the actual McSame!

That's where having "35 years of experience" doesn't always work. Obama needs to bring up the Keating Five, McCain's dismal record for veterans besides himself, and so on.

I'm worried about them, too. Especially after seeing that clip of Hillary. Its infuriating to see the enabling media who fed Hillary's delusional followers the lie she still could "win" when the primaries were so obviously over, still try to sew the seeds of discord. The right wing media is salivating over any kind of "problem" at the Democratic Convention. You'll hear crickets about the RECORD number of protesters at the Republican get together, but just watch the shrill screaming over any kind of small controversy in Denver...

War criminal, Bolton, says Iran will be better off with regime change.
I see red lights all over....sounds like deja vu, these SOBs will not leave without messing another country, and killing innocent people. Will the American people, and Congress look the other way again?
I think the Republicans have boxed themselves into a corner though. When Bush was doing all his saber rattling over Iran, the price of oil went through the roof because of war speculation. Now as the election approaches, big oil wants to reduce the pump price temporarily to get McCain in, but if the Republicans start promulgating war again, the prices will shoot up again.

The problem with your comment is that it refers to future events. Obama should have responded by now. In 2004 Kerry waited to respond, and lost. In 1988, Dukakis hesitated to respond, and lost.

One problem I've had with Obama and crew from day one was the undeserving nice things they have said about McClown. There was no need to talk endlessly about what a "true hero" he was when there are plenty of actual Viet Nam vets who don't think he was. Hell, it should take ONE Viet Nam veteran who says he wasn't what he says he was to just remain SILENT on the subject. Our party needs to stop with the gushing praise of our enemies, and bloody some noses. Its the only thing those Americans who wear ignorance as a badge of honor respect.

Yeah, yeah...Everyone knows Chuckie has a mean set of sharp steel teeth...And, he's dutifully performed the Sunday yak thing for Senator Obama since he won the nomination...But, remembering those sharp steel teeth and the power of full majority, it doesn't compute that all of Schumer's toothiness would fail to deploy...Of course, its August and who showcases a new product in August, huh???

I have a strong feeling that the rethugs will try to steal the momentum from Obama, after his big acceptance speech, by either starting some sort of terror alert (like they did during Kerry's convention speech), or distract the nation with some meaningless event. Obama rating will soar after the convention, and I am sure they will try, yet again, to bring him down.
This is the only way they know how to win. Their candidate will pale in comparision to Obama, and the difference will be obvious.

OMG Sage24, been thinking the exact same thing the last couple of weeks. I would not be surprised if there is some sort of 'undisclosed threat' the day of or day after Obama's speech...that's the only thing they know, release bad news on a Friday, or cover up good news with some sort of distraction...
Sage24

Great minds think alike. The day after Kerry's speech, they put out some kind of alert, and any momentum Kerry had, was lost.

Sen. Schumer has a valid point which I'm sure will be seriously considered by the excellent Obama campaign folks. The message I just left at Obama '08 website:
Please do not make me sorry that I voted for Mr. Obama rather than Ms. Clinton because Mr. Obama is too nice or too high minded to take the fight to McBush. McBush is getting away with far too much in defining himself as some kind of maverick and defining Mr. Obama as a "celebrity". It's ludicrous and McBush is a sitting duck that isn't being adequately focused on. I don't believe that the discussion has to go in the gutter do provide an honest assessment of who McBush is. Truthfulness is paramount. Whatever is said must be accurate, verifiable and above the belt. But that is easily possible. McBush is a weak candidate and for better or worse, he's an elderly guy who really isn't sharp enough to be president. It is relevant.
I appreciate Mr. Obama's intellectual skills. I appreciate his youth and energy and his lovely intelligent wife and fine family. But he's got to win this election and I want to see him and Axlerod and Plouffe kick some butt. Really. There's only 2.5 months until this election happens and it's time for Mr. Obama to show he's got what it takes to TAKE this election. I don't want some 51/49 squeaker. I don't want a corrupt Supreme Court sorting out this election. We know the end of that story.
It's time to take the resources that Mr. Obama has gathered and use them to really beat John McBush. I want to see Barack Obama really win this election. He's said he wants it. He's gone through a hell of a lot to get the nomination. It's time to close the deal. I don't care if McBush is diminished or even demolished. If RepubCo had a better situation to work with they would pound the opposition into a pulp with everything they had. And they are already doing better than they deserve with some very, very, very stupid stuff.
Your comments are perfect and are my sentiments exactly. I changed from Hillary to Obama in the primary because I thought her campaign was awful. Granted, it was mostly other people (including her husband) who I thought were being despicable, however, at the end of the day, SHE is responsible for her campaign. Same for Obama, being nice is very appropriate - AT A TEA PARTY. He needs to take off the gloves and kick ass - I completely agree with Schumer on this issue.

Well, you may know Schumer personally, but I think it was terrible that Schumer went to the press over this even if he had tried to talk to Obama personally. If anything, if Schumer were a loyal Democrat, he would be out there kicking McCain's ass himself, but you see, this is what Wesley Clark did for Obama and look where it's landed him, bashed by one and all for it and apparently dropped from VP consideration. It's called surrogates. And for Schumer who made it a cakewalk for Mukasey to get in as AG to talk about not hitting back hard enough!
All the Democrats including Obama have treated McCain with kid gloves, and they need to stop it right now. McCain's even made an ad of quotes from Democrats praising him, ending with Hillary Clinton saying McCain has 35 years of experience and Obama just a speech he gave in blah, blah, blah. Today McCain has an ad claiming people will lose their life savings under Obama. In addition to pointing out that most people don't have life savings (except the rich) because of the Republicans, the Democrats need to bring out the Keating Five. Find some people who actually lost their pensions and life savings because of McCain. And find some real veterans whom our "National Veteran" has not served at all.

I think people are overreacting. The Obama campaign knows what it's doing, IMO. Their new brand of politics doesn't include slinging mud after mud has been slung. It can't and still be considered "above the fray". However, it CAN fight back using Obama's method of making fun of the mud slinging. He does that well and people who want to discuss issues and are tired of mud slinging welcome his approach.
I can't say that I always understand the methodology of the Obama campaign, but I've learned to trust it because it works. They don't expect to see great poll results until closer to the election, after the ground game has established a presence in all 50 states. I understand that people don't want to stay silent, but maybe you could have a one-on-one with Axelrod, John, get a feel for the campaign's logic and (without giving away details) report back with any changed confidence level. They're confident; some of you aren't.
