AMERICAblog: Seems everyone noticed McCain's sneers, anger and contempt

  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I wasn't born yet, but in college I studied the Nixon and John F. Kennedy debates.

It was Nixon and JFK all over again in many respects.

    McCain = Nixon
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Yeah, McCain had the "Nixon Glower" down perfectly.
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
A lot of anecdotal comments from people in my area of all sides of the aisle were pretty much that McCain liked a sad, angry old man where Obama was Presidential and very well informed.
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
In the current issue of the New Republic is an article which points to McCain's repeated use of negative ads long after their lies have been debunked. It asks the question: whatever happened to McCain's honor? The conclusion is that he believes no one loves this country more than he does, therefore he deserves to be president, and this end justifies even dishonorable means. Obviously he resents Obama standing in his way.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
The undecided low information voter will be turned off more by McCain's attitude than any kind of debate information that was either right or wrong. Obama won it in their minds - hands down! In fact, Obama won the debate with those who are policy wonks, as well.

    OBAMA THE WINNER!

    McCain - LOSER!
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
McArCain needs a little oil to loosen that permanently clenched jaw.

One of the first things I said to my husband (That didn't involve me ranting a curse in it - directed at McCain) was that "they REALLY don't like each other, do they?"

Yes, it was blatantly obvious from McCain, but I could see Obama was a bit miffed in a "Can you believe this jackwad?" sort of way.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
He would show that very same angry contempt towards Americans, congress, the constitution, all of it.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    Sweetie!
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Karol, my friend!!!
    :D

    McCain is such a loser.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Yes, he is. And grumpy too. Maybe Letterman is getting to him. lol
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
Dave came through all right. Most excellent.

McCain is like a robot who keeps getting angry that people aren't embracing policies that have proven to be catastrophic failures. A very old robot that's not working so well.
  • WhoAmI · 1 year ago
I can hardly wait to see SNL tomorrow night. :)
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I forget what they were talking about now, but I loved when Obama sort of laughed when McCain was attacking him.

Reminded me of the Reagan/Carter debate, when Reagan was relaxed and confident even when Carter was on the attack.
  • time · 1 year ago
What a bunch of America Haters, Babykillers.
Obama the Terrorist. Just who we need to Destroy this Great Country!
What a childish comment, I have a Bracelet to! You would vote for a squirrel if it claimed to be liberal.
Oh yes, your Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden has bought himself a Face Lift with your Tax Dollars. Not only that add Hair Plugs and Capped teeth. Sorry folks. McCain WINS!
  • Sphy · 1 year ago
McCain had no class. I like Letterman's perspective that we expect better behavior from a genuine hero. They both mischaracterized each others campaign statements but Obama would let McCain's clarifications stand while McCain would just ignore Obama's clarifications and repeat the smear and then repeat the smear and repeat the smear... It was aPaling
  • Sphy · 1 year ago
McCain wasn't even wearing a flag lapel pin. Is he really that unpatriotic? Does McCain hate America?
  • blueshockeychick · 1 year ago
Awesome comment! Thank you for the laugh! They pick on Obama about idiotic crap like this constantly....never hear anything about McCain though. Much like the "lipstick on a pig" thing.....it wasn't okay for Obama to say it, but it WAS okay for McCain to say it in reference to Hillary. Ah, good ol' Republican hypocrisy. Some things never change.
  • WhoAmI · 1 year ago
My sister called to see if I had noticed that McCain wouldn't look at Obama the entire time. I think EVERYBODY noticed.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I would have liked to see what McCain would do if he looked at Obama.

Would he lunge across the stage? Start foaming at the mouth? Have some kind of uncontrollable tourettes fit?

    Would have been interesting.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Would McCain be able to look other world leaders in the eye? How could anyone trust him?
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
Nothing says bipartisan and diplomacy like a good old fashioned sneer. He's a war monger... and political roadkill after this week's antics... I'm not even going to mention Palin... I'll let Joseph and Letterman handle that one.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Kind of funny to think about the differences between the Repub base and humans.

That stuff went over gangbusters in the Repub primary, when he was actling like an angry ass in their debates.

Tonight, though, Dems and even Independents just think he's a psycho.
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
Also, did anyone else find themselves dozing off when FrankenCain spoke? It was like sitting through algebra all over again.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    Hey, I make algebra fun.
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
My eternal admiration is yours :)
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
Ok just one more thing that will surely pave my way to hell... even more. But remember the alien guy in the Men in Black movie? The one who gradually decomposes throughout each scene because he's a corpse with an alien inside? THAT's who McCain reminds me of!! Except the Men in Black dude made me laugh my ass off... McCain, not so much. I'm going back to the fire pit now...
  • time · 1 year ago
YOUR OBAMA IS A TERRORIST. YOU WOULD VOTE FOR A SQUIRREL IF IT WERE LIBERAL. HE WILL DESTROY THIS GREAT COUNTRY. WHAT A CHILDISH REMARK COMING FROM A GROWN MAN, I HAVE A BRACELET TO! HIS BROTHER LIVES IN A HUT. YOU WOULD THINK HE WOULD HE WOULD GIVE HIM MORE THAN $1.00. DRAFT DODGER, BABYKILLER ! AND BY THE WAY YOUR PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE JOE BIDEN HAS USED YOUR TAX DOLLARS FOR A FACE LIFT, ADD HAIR PLUGS AND CAPPED TEETH. NO HIDING THAT. NO WONDER HE HAS NOT BEEN OUT IN PUBLIC MUCH. SORRY FOLKS, McCAIN WINS!

Don't you know that alcohol and the internet don't mix.

You're screaming, making no sense and it appears that you're slurring your words.

    You must be a neo-con.
  • blueshockeychick · 1 year ago
First of all, you're a moron. Secondly, Lady McCain dropped $300K for the ensemble she wore to the Republicunt National Convention. Comparing hairplugs to that is like comparing apples and oranges, pal.

And how is Obama a draft dodger? I think you're confusing Obama with your boy Bush. Obama was serving his country on HOME soil as a community organizer in Chicago trying to get out-of-work blue-collar AMERICAN citizens back on their feet again.

Oh, and by the way....Joe Biden is the VICE Presidential candidate, NOT the PRESIDENTIAL candidate. Clearly, you're a blubbering idiot. Now go to sleep. It's WAY past your bedtime.
  • Mike_G · 1 year ago
Don't you get it? Obama dodged the draft by being born only eleven years before the draft was abolished! So devious!
  • Ben Dover · 1 year ago
Laura should just go ahead and invite Michelle over to begin measuring the drapes in the White House.

someone has to explain why McCain wouldnt even look at Obama.

It's obvious Obama got under McCain's skin, and that temper was on display.

If this was a football game Obama won 31-14.

Throwing tantrums doesn't make the country safer, the economy stronger, or people healthier. But it makes John McCain feel presidential.

    Loser.
  • cheetos · 1 year ago
I bet McCain's jawbone is sore tonight....after all that clenching and twitching.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
Super sore. And even more rigid. A little premature riga mortis.
  • blueshockeychick · 1 year ago
My mother knew that I recorded tonight's debate and told me that I should go through and count how many times McCain said, "Senator Obama just doesn't understand," but I don't think I can put myself through hearing McCain say that phrase one more time this weekend.

I feel that McCain had 2 reasons for pulling the economy stunt this week: 1) He fell 9 points behind Obama in the national polls, due greatly to one big issue: the economy, and 2) In relation, he felt that he would dig himself further into a hole by debating with Obama tonight, so he was trying to get out of it. We'll have to wait and see, but I think that Obama will certainly keep his lead, and likely add to it. McCain couldn't seem to get off his "Senator Obama just doesn't understand" high-horse long enough to make a valid point that didn't consist of talking about the Iraq war.

My mom was the first to spot the Bush-like smirk. The difference is, Bush's smirk is usually childlike and very ignorant looking, whereas McCain's just looked plain evil. I think we all saw the real John McCain tonight - an idiotic, bitter war-monger. More proof that there is clearly only one choice on November 4th.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    "Senator Obama just doesn't understand,"

EXACTLY the meme he was trying to propagate. What Dear Senator John just doesn't understand is that Bush's policies have been catastrophic failures. Period. No debate. FAILURE.

Poor, poor fool just doesn't seem to understand.
  • Desert_Hussein_Rat · 1 year ago
I really think he was trying to channel Reagan, hitting Carter over the head in 1980, with his famous "There you go again..." line.

The trouble is, he played it like a broken record, and he was using it, even when it was quite clear that it wasn't a case of Obama understanding the issue, it was more a case of Obama just having a different point of view of the problem or question.

It actually looked pretty bad, and the commentators on MSNBC (notably Olbermann, Eugene Robinson, and even Buchanan to some extent) picked up on it as well. It was a gotcha line without a reason to use it.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
Absolutely agree. Nonsequitor, and obviously a planned in advance bit of theater. The fact that it had no reason for use also suggested that McCain was unable to track the conversation, which wouldn't be very helpful in all those preconditioned talks he hopes to have.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
To me it screams Bush the former in his debate with Gerry Ferraro where he said "let me help you with the definition of ________, Miss Ferraro." can't remember what he was patronizing her about, but that's what it brought up for me. Cause only old white guys are qualified to run stuff, nevermind that they run stuff into the ground a huge proportion of the time.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
dems can crucify him with this, how many times has McCain mispoke in the last few weeks, confusing Spain with Mexico, or whatever.

Okay, I'll pitch one, play a recording of McCain saying that, play the clip where McCain refuses to answer why birth control isn't on insurance but viagra is, play any clip like that, and say "Senator John McCain DOES understand. He Understands Washington, knows it like the back of his hand, He Understands the old boys network, because he IS the old boys network. People like John McCain tell us to stop whining, be happy with what we've got because it's just the way things are, and we really aren't smart enough to Understand the world the way millionaires and billionaires like him do. But we do understand, and so does Obama, and that's why we are voting for change."

or some other such, I'm starting to feel slimy so I'll stop. But anyway, I think that meme could easily be turned around on him, it's not a slam dunk.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
Totally agree. He's McCain's a wide open bull's eye waiting, begging for discredit. Easy mark.
  • Desert_Hussein_Rat · 1 year ago
It amazes me, consistently, just how much people to continue to underestimate the mind, and political savvy of Barack Obama. People talk about his speaking style, but as somebody who came to him rather late in the process (I was a Dodd backer originally), his speaking ability is only one of his gifts.

The management style of his campaign is top notch and that starts at the top. While I've taken issue with a few things he's done or not done, his campaign keeps a strong consistent message. There is no backbiting or bickering about other people within his organization, even at times when you expect there to be. It's the tightest ship I've ever seen in a Democratic campaign since I've paid attention to politics.

He gives a strong, steady sense of presence. Of absolutely knowing, or at least projecting the belief that he knows what he is about, and what he believes. You saw it tonight. He was calm and steady, and really seemed to rise above McCain's attacks. He hit McCain hard in places, but did it so smoothly that McCain never really knew he'd been damaged.

McCain needs to take the chip off his shoulder. Barack is here because he deserves to be. He ran the best campaign, and best organized campaign by a Democrat in recent memory, and he's running a better campaign than McCain right now. The fact that McCain can't acknowledge this, reflects on his poor character as a bully, and on his arrogant sense of entitlement, as though his opponent doesn't deserve it.

McCain's anger, and arrogance, and Obama's absolutely unshakable sense of poise are making all the difference right now, and boy are the differences obvious.

re: "Throughout the night, McCain seemed angry and showed his contempt for Obama. That really doesn't play well. McCain couldn't control that ugly aspect of his personality at one of the most important events in the campaign. I think that's scary."

Actually, for those of us who also have contempt for Obama (which appears to be about half of America), McCain's rumored contempt plays VERY well.
The Obamabots keep saying that McCain's "anger" is "an ugly aspect of McCain's personality. However, only Obamabots make mention of superficial crap like "personality." As McCain himself brags, he doesn't win "Miss Congeniality" contests. A lot of us LOVE that aspect of his "personality."

Finally, why are Obamabots so SCARED?
It makes you appear to be complete WHIMPS!
"Ew! John McCain is sooooo scary!!!!!!!!"
    GAG.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
You've got an enormous pimple in the middle of your forehead named Sarah Palin, which makes most of your post ridiculous. Check a mirror.
  • blueshockeychick · 1 year ago
Who says we're scared? Your boy McCain seemed to be the only one with a chip on his shoulder last night.

Don't like what we have to say? Are you SCARED of the facts? Then continue to pull the wool over your eyes and run from them. Unfortunately for you, much of America is starting to awaken to the nonsense the conservatives have put us through over the last 8 years. You're apparently just not smart enough to see reality even when it slaps you in the face.
  • runderwood · 1 year ago
It's scary that he wants to be president and he can't even control himself on national tv. John McCain showed that he is clearly not ready to lead any country. It's really hard for me to understand how someone can support his views. Oh maybe the greedy.
  • Mark217 · 1 year ago
I have seen expressions like McCain's before, when I volunteered in a state mental hospital. He has a psychotic type of rage and dosn't belong near sharp objects or the White House.
  • cay · 1 year ago
I just saw the paper version of the NYT--it looks like McCain is wearing lifts (there's no way he is just slightly shorter than Obama--he's 5'7" and Obama's 6'3").
  • CarolAl · 1 year ago
McCain's body language speaks volumes. The old soldier could not look his opponent in the eye. Is it out of fear, intimidation, or contempt? No matter; it was unpresidential. This is the man who prides himself on "reaching across the aisle?" No wonder his answer to every conflict is war! McCain lacks any sense of diplomacy. Like Bush, McCain is quick with snide remarks, and to him, people/countries are either good or evil.

McCain's tense face, clenched jaw, forced yellow smile, and creepy nervous laugh showed how hard he was working to keep his temper under control. His stance was rigid, and several times, he nearly banged his stiff arms and fist clenched around his pen against the podium. Very bad form.

McCain's habit of bringing up the past hurt him. Perhaps he's forgotten that many voters weren't born and most were not old enough to vote in 1983 when he first entered the Senate. They don't relate to tales of Ronald Reagan or of the war in Vietnam. To all but his contemporaries, McCain sounds like the old guy who can't stop telling war stories. People listen politely but roll their eyes and chuckle in exasperation behind his back. His emotional stories (POW, bracelet, veterans) have been overused during the campaign. They sounded rehearsed and disingenuous.

All of this goes to the basic problem with McCain. He is living in the past. His ideas are old ideas. His view of the world is a 20th century view. Today's voters are most concerned with what is happening right now, trying to deal with and find a way out of the disasters Bush/Cheney have created. America stands at the beginning of the 21st century, and the American people are looking for leadership that can solve present problems and prepare us for the future.
  • Desert_Hussein_Rat · 1 year ago
    Well said. Couldn't agree more.
  • Rufus · 1 year ago
McCain isn't an old soldier. He's an old sailor. And, after the Bush experience, anyone who smirks loses with me.

    Obama/Rufus 2008!
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
I live in the south and I've seen that sneering and sarcasm and just below the surface contempt and refusal to acknowledge someone my whole life and were it any other circumstance where a young black man was trying to engage an older white man, and being treated this contemptuosly it would be called racism. I think the democrats probably don't want to bring that up...perhaps McCain's bad behavior was trying to bait them into doing so.
