Probably more productive to contact one's own representative. I did. This Menendez is obviously a serious homophobe and half of New Jersey would probably have to call him before he withdrew his alternate bill.

Perhaps it might be instructive for everyone to contact their own Reps and Senators and let them know that you oppose any immigration reform that keeps Gay transnational families apart
Tom in Lazybrook

My email to the DSCC
Reports have surfaced showing that your chair (Senator Menendez of New Jersey) has decided to support the current policy of separating Gay transnational families. This is a huge slap in the face of millions of LGBT Americans that strongly have supported the Democratic party in the past. And a continuation of the betrayal of the LGBT community by the Democratic Party that has become more clear since January.
My name is xxxxxxxx. You can look up my donations online. But I'm not considering any further support to your candidates (and that includes any Texas Senate Candidates - and I'll tell them to ask Senator Menendez why) until you move on Immigration Reform that includes an absolute right for Gay partners to immigrate legally into the USA. I have yet to see any leadership from the Democrats on any of the very important Gay rights issues such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Permanent Partners Immigration Act, and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Action means passing things into law, not issuing press releases or talking to the Human Rights Campaign/Stonewall Democrats. You have 59 Senators. You are out of excuses for inaction. Who opposes ENDA? Who opposes reuniting transnational Gay families? Who opposes DADT Repeal? Passing a watered down hate crimes bill (which you can't even find the time to schedule in the Senate) isn't going to cut it for many of us.
And just because the Republicans are worse doesn't mean you own my communities or my vote or support. We do have a choice. And I will choose to go fishing on election day 2010 unless the Democrats start representing my community. And I will not be alone. Because, as of today, I don't care if the Republicans win. Keep telling us to pound sand and we just might do that instead of voting in the next election. Because you aren't giving me any reason to vote for your party, much less contribute financially to Democrats who continue to throw my community under the bus.
In addition, I will contact my representatives in the House and Senate (and encourage others to do the same) and tell them to vote NO on the final bill if Gay transnational families are stripped out of the immigration reform bill.
Sincerely

Keep the faith community out. They are generally a bigoted bunch. But honestly, the dems may not be getting it done on the time line we want but they are the only hope. Withholding money will only allow the repubs to gain a foothold and if you think for one minute that things will be better or even be considered with them, then you need a time machine to 2004. Put all your mony into candidates who do walk the walk, and there are some, but don't be bitchy and threaten to take the ball and go home. the idea to hold back Democratic campaign contributions for the next cycle of elections is a great one.
If the Ds want the money from the gay community they have to earn it with equal representation and rights under the law. Did the southern politicians court the "negro" vote when slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person in the constitution? No--for a wide variety of reasons, but one reason being is that they were not seen as equal under the law.
the gay community should cease and desist all democratic fundraising until they take GLBT issues seriously...
and this coming from a breeder...I'm personally bothered by how the politicains claim gay rights during campaign season then 'duck and cover' once they're in office. that's garbage, hold them accountable to promises like marriage equality and repeal of DADT and if there is one thing we know about politicians: MONEY TALKS.

senator menendez, and every other senator wondering where standing FOR people's rights might set them with organized religion, should remember... Obama's platform when running for President INCLUDED equal rights for glbt people.
that used to be the kiss of death, but it didn't stop Obama from getting elected. This is pretty much a non-issue for the majority of the American public... unless these idiots in the Senate MAKE it an issue.

I've donated thousands to the Dems in the last several cycles (thats plural and thats in each cycle). They're getting nothing until I see some results. Does the 'lets sit on our hands in 2010 guy' have a website up yet.

Back when we were debating whether to push ahead with employment nondiscrimination (ENDA) for LGBs, I was one of the maybe 50% agreeing with John that T folks should wait. One of the arguments was that the Ts are in a separate class because surgical reassignment is more optional and more complicated than, say, having a gay bf or gf. But the other main argument was eerily similar to today's: that passage of the legislation was doomed with the T folks included. I think it's good to remember this when we come down on politicians like Menendez for favoring some form of immigration reform that could pass.

Sadly the idea of holding the DCCC's financial feet the fire as good as it is will never work. Simply because (as I keep saying) the steaming pile of "leaderhship" of the LGBT "community" - folks like HRC et. al are so enamored with whatever bread crumbs drop from the table they dont dare show any sort of spine.
Yes the Democratic Party is light years better than the slobbering christo-facist GOP alternative. But there MUST BE some kind of consequences for continuously screwing us over.
How soon we forget that it was a Democratic Adminstration ( Bill Clinton) who not only gave us "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", but THEN signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law! With nothing more than hand-wringing and sad shakes of our heads of "Oh he had no choice..." from our so called leaders.

how is it 'lightyears better' to be royally screwed by our alleged friends at nearly every turn ? clinton set back our rights by decades and we still hear gay apologists talking about how 'gay-friendly' the clintons are. sorry, invitations to cocktail parties don't impress me as much as they do many of our gay 'leaders'. believe it or not, there are people who believe in individual liberty in the 'other' party (see cheney's comments on equal marriage rights for example), but instead of nurturing those sentiments, many of us mocked the efforts of log cabin, called them 'jews for nazis', and surrendered any hope for gains in that party to the evangelicals. so now we have to beg for the crumbs from the dems and nervously count close votes that might have not been nearly so close were we not so short-sighted and, you'll excuse the expression, married to one party.

Keep the pressure up, John. I know that this doesn't affect too many LGBT people. BUT for those of us who ARE affected by this incredible inequality, it's crucial that immigration changes. After 8 years together with my partner, still no rights as a couple, he still can't sponsor me, and I'm still on a temporary visa. Moving to my homecountry (Germany) is not an option - as a lawyer he'd even have a hard time finding a job in another state...

MILLIONS OF PUBLIC IRATE VOICES, CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE?
The British Office of National Statistics, immigrants send home about £4 billion a year in remittances back to their home countries. When this is added to the previously estimated cost of immigration to Britain of £8.8 billion, the grand total of £12.8 billion is reached. Which is about $18 billion US Dollars. The British Islands can be placed in California three and half times. So what is illegal immigration costing the US taxpayers compared to the United Kingdom? The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says the flow of remittances to Latin America has doubled in the past four years, to an estimated $55 billion this year--and that's just Latin America? Obviously the US government keeps it undisclosed.
But if you add up the demands of foreign nationals for free health care, education, food stamps, low income housing and so much more, that is guaranteed by forced federal mandates and state give-aways We must demand E-Verify that is permanent and not at the mercy of poisoned political influence. E-Verify should not be just for new employees, but everybody who has been with the company for even ten years or more. Unless the bloggers hadn't commented on the Internet, most communities would have remained in the media's perpetual darkness about E-Verify.
The Obama administration has been instrumental in trying to kill E-Verify, with an assortment of excuses. Most of the majority Democratic liberals have played games with American workers lives, even to weaken it and allowing at least 300 thousand foreign nationals to gain employment from contractors under the Stimulus bill. US Chamber of Commerce, ACLU, La Raza and other anti-American, anti-sovereignty groups have massive nefarious influence on our Washington. The open border free traders legislators who are continually eroding away our constitutional rights. It's disgusting that the free trade cartels are using their political insiders such as Sen. Harry Reid, Speaker of the house Pelosi and many more to allow the free movement of uneducated, uncivilized, poor to infiltrate every community in our lands. It is an unforgivable offense to push for an AMNESTY or as they like to call it Immigration reform, when over ten million Americans are jobless.
The morons who are promised to protect all Americans, are really pandering to minorities and the business executives, who want the cheapest workers they can find--without any extras including health care. A very upgraded E-verify application that any literate computer person can use, can begin the attrition of clearing our nation of illegal foreigners. Since the 1960's they have brought unrestrained criminals, subversives, who have no motive drive-by shooting to prove a point. From wherever they have come, they have tried to force on the American people a nasty form of multiculturalism and fundamentalist religions which attributes to increasing violence. A few officers of the law such as Sheriff Ariapo, have enforced immigration laws on a county level, to be purposely restrained by corrupt politicians such as the new Homeland security chief Napolitano. She is like so many elected officials who make grand entrances, promising to enforce the laws and while admonishing anybody who does. She and her thrall have incapacitated Sheriff Joe in the past, to do his job along with Arizona's governor. All these spineless characters need to be shown the exit, when they appear for re-election?
We have been forced by federal law to accommodate them with translators in the court system, voting and other measures, when those who came here legally would have been versed in the English language. Americans citizens have been subjected to growing overpopulation, which our politicians seemingly remain quiet about? The pollution in the cities, traffic blockages is an ever growing chaos. We must understand that illegal immigration is causing massive economic setbacks fo our nations own homeless and impoverished. California being the perfect pawn by their governor and Sacramento officials who must cut services, because of the $47 billion budget shortfall. The worst offenders are the liberal press who do not denounce the causes that can be attributed to illegal immigration. There non-democratic principles have allowed the proliferation of Sanctuary States and cities.
The only way for AMERICANS to get any action is to verbally explode on the Senate and Congressional lawmakers is by phoning their aides direct. A million voices or more will make both the states and Washington politicians to realize, their career jobs are on the line. Their greatest ability is to distract American taxpayers with meaningless issues, that only effects minority groups. Illegal Immigration effects everybody, your taxes, your jobs, your language, your culture, your moral integrity, your religion. YOU CAN MAKE AN IMMENSE DIFFERENCE? Senate & Representative for your contact at: (202) 224-3121: THESE PEOPLE ARE YOUR PUBLIC SERVANTS AND SWORE AN OATH TO YOU?. Demand E-Verify today.
WE DON"T NEED NEW IMMIGRATION REFORM--WE JUST NEED THE 1986 SIMPSON/MAZZOLI BILL ENFORCED!

"This is what happens when you try to build coalitions with bad people. The immigration reform community tried to get the Catholic church, and worse, the evangelicals on board. And what happens as a result? Now we're having Sophie's Choice discussions about which immigrants we should throw to the wolves." ------------- Please stop conflating illegal aliens and legal immigrants. The groups you mention for the most part are trying to gain AMNESTY for illegal aliens. There is no "Sophie's Choice"--legal immigrants and citizens have already been "thrown to the wolves" by those who believe that illegal aliens should receive the same rights and benefits even though they violated the laws of this country. It seems to me that a gay rights group pushing for the LEGAL right to marry and the LEGAL right to bring same-sex spouses to this country would want to avoid associations with groups espousing rights for people who behave illegally and have no legal rights to be here in the first place.

While the Senate version of The Reuniting Families Act does not include permanent partners, Senator Menendez HAS said that he supports including lesbian and gay couples in comprehensive immigration reform . . . and that he will continue to co-sponsor The Uniting American Families Act.
In a statement given to Immigration Equality, Senator Menendez said that, "As a co-sponsor of The Uniting American Families Act, I look forward to working with Senator Leahy on this important effort as we move toward comprehensive immigration reform. This legislation can help prevent the separation of of permanent partners, and should be included in the comprehensive immigration bill.”
So, while he didn't include lesbian and gay couples in his Senate bill, it is also not quite accurate to say he doesn't support our inclusion in CIR. In fact, he is on the record saying that he does.

I agree with Tom. If Sen. Menendez (one of my senators!) thinks the inclusion of gays and lesbians is important, then why doesn't he include it in this bill? There's no need for a separate bill. In fact, a separate bill is LESS likely to pass. Therefore, I respectfully submit, that he is less interested in protecting gay & lesbian partners than he is other partners.

WE DON"T NEED NEW IMMIGRATION REFORM--WE JUST NEED THE 1986 SIMPSON/MAZZOLI BILL ENFORCED!
-------------
Please stop conflating illegal aliens and legal immigrants.
