AMERICAblog: Senators less optimistic about reaching stimulus deal

  • jurassicpork · 10 months ago
It's truly a pathetic commentary that Democrats need a veto-proof/filibuster-proof majority of 60 seats before they can finally laugh at the Republicans and their blustering. What they don't realize is that they're never going to quite get there until they start showing some backbone on a consistent basis.
  • Blueflash · 10 months ago
Maybe Rick Warren and all the right wing preachers who'll be getting tax payer money by way of Obama's expanded faith based initiative should be lobbying the Republicans on his behalf.
  • One Key Missing · 10 months ago
The Awesome Obama Campaign Machine got left back in Chicago, I guess.

    Pathetic.

Praise the lord and pass the stimulus package. I know I could never pass up a good stimulus package.
  • RDS · 10 months ago
P.S. I also emailed Lindsey Graham asking him why he did not get outraged when Bush & his Republican cohorts were wasting trillions of taxpayer dollars in the largest government expansion of mankind.

I am sorry John, you have been overlooked, and you are absolutely right. Random phone calls don't do much unless it's a narrow, simple issue. And this isn't. Calls need to be targeted to individuals, timed as to House and Senate actions, and coordinated with other kinds of public communications. I am mystified why I haven't received a single email from Obama.com this week, when there has been a steady diet of these emails since the election. It makes me fear the old time smoke and mirrors guys are at the wheel. They've never had respect for the rank and file. They think they were elected to make decisions for the proletariat.

This is SOOO inconsistent with Obama the community organizer. Moveon has shown in the past the power of 2m emails to the right place at the right moment. I am puzzled, and saddened. But I'm still going to send a random email to my Senator. Something is better than nothing, and I fear what Rove is up to.

Handing the mantle of leadership to the likes of susan Collins is not what I expected Obama to do. but it ain't over yet. And he is a crafty guy.
  • Same Stripes · 10 months ago
Crafty enough to get your vote. Isn't it a shame that politicians aren't the same in office as they are campaigning?
  • judybrowni · 10 months ago
Okay, here's specific for you: Call Collins and other senators set to strip the stimulus of Education and needed Transpertation spending"

When Blago / Burris prove how easy it is to outfox those imbeciles, what do you expect ?

Add to that Joe Liebermman... Those people don't understand restraint, they only understand being b****slapped. If you don't do it, it means you are weak.
  • Dr Albert Gortenbull · 10 months ago
The government borrowing inherent in this "stimulus" bill will guarantee Jimmy Carter-style mortgage rates of 20% or more a few years down the road. Respectfully, Albert
  • One Key Missing · 10 months ago
You know nothing about interest rates.

Your boy Bush has run up the biggest borrowing since Reagan & rates have hit bottom.
  • One Key Missing · 10 months ago
    BTW:

Reagan's borrowing was far worse than Carter's.

What was the affect on interest rates?

    They went lower.

You know nothing about interest rates.
  • sukabi1 · 10 months ago
where the interest rates are at any particular time is the direct result of Fed manipulation to "stabilize" the economy. It's an artificial, manipulated indicator of economic health.
  • Same Stripes · 10 months ago
So Mr.Missing, are you saying that interest rates will stay low? How confident are you that they will even stay under, oh lets say 8% over the next 8 years?
  • Dr Albert Gortenbull · 10 months ago
Interest rates during the Bush administration were kept low in an attempt to appease ACORN and its accomplices at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Just ask Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. However, if a gigantic, pork-loaded stimulus plan is enacted in Washington, foreigners may look for other places to lend their money (especially long-term) when they see a complete collapse of fiscal discipline in America along with the accompanying fall of the dollar. Respectfully, Albert
  • paulbot5 · 10 months ago
It shouldn't pass quickly its a trillion dollars were talking about
  • example · 10 months ago
Ridiculous. Why should we expend any effort to pass this emasculated, pathetic stimulus. Obama spent so much time wooing republicans even though democrats had a 58 vote majority, well let them lobby on it's behalf. Oh wait, they're the ones trying to kill it? I guess you fucked up pretty bad then, huh.

Maybe if this vote fails, Obama can come back with something partisan and ram it through as a regular budget proposal.
  • sukabi1 · 10 months ago
John, where should I send the cheese for your whine???
  • LLDEM · 10 months ago
John, I've never been on the inside of anything that happens in our nations capital and so I certainly can't speak to the effectiveness of random phone calls on political influence. I have however had some large corporate experience regarding getting my voice heard and on more than one occasion, a carefully placed letter to an otherwise uncaring CEO made sure that I got action. So take it for what it's worth, in my opinion, speaking up works. And at the very least, those of us without the inside the beltway connections at least FEEL like we're making a difference. Sure beats being told we don't know anything.

PS: Thanks for keeping us pumped and involved.
  • Same Stripes · 10 months ago
The whole point is to make you feel like you are part of the process. Reality is your not. There is a ruling class in America, and as long as you *feel* like you are making a difference, they will stay in place.

They don't care what you have to say.

Here are the Blue Dogs to call: the scrooges who stripped healthcare for the unemployed from the stimulus:

Call your senators and email them tonight. They are voting tonight. Ask them to support President Obama's stimulus package 'As is'.

Call, they really keep track. It does help.

Martinez is on the fence. If you live in FL especially, call Martinez.
  • Savage8862 · 10 months ago
Obama and his fellow Democrats have completely fucked this up. He showed great calm and knowledge on the campaign trail and as soon as he got into the White House he seems to have gotten dumber. Perhaps it is that stupid sunburst carpet in the oval office - I think it may be possessed by George W. Bush and it is somehow influencing Obama's administrations actions.

I have said from the get go that the Republicans have driven the conversation since the inauguration and Obama has failed to regain control of that message. It seems as if the Democrats have no plan and are incapable of formulating a message to take to the American people. Reid and Pelosi need to go and Robert Gibbs needs to resign. His press conferences are a dismal experience to watch. Where is Rham these days. Haven't heard one word from him since he was sworn in.

Come on Democrats get it together - get a clear and strong message out or we wil find ourselves on the outside yet again looking in. This country cannot afford Republicans in control again.

Interesting posts, both this one, and the previous one. It hits home, because I;ve been itching to call some congresscritters and senators about this bill, but like John, I don't know exactly who to call, or what to say.. I read a 'quick and dirty' blurb on one blog about some of the pork in the bill, but not sure if it's correct or not, or who slipped those items into it. Another thing which stumps me is: I live in DC proper, which means I have no representation in the senate or congress. Would I be wasting my time calling since I can't vote for any of em? Would my call make any difference?
  • timncguy · 10 months ago
The dems have screwed this up from the beginning.

Yes there is some pork in the bill that should NOT be there. But, as Obama has rightly stated, it is about 1% of the total. But, if you listened to the press and the talking heads for the last week you would never know that 1% figure. You would assume that about 50% of the bill was "loaded up" with junk. The dems should have been ALL OVER the media explaining the 1% as soon as the repugs started ranting.

Obama made a big mistatke by starting the conversation with Repugs by offering them 30% of the bill in tax cuts and not getting any guarantees back from them. He offerred way too much as a starting point. He should have started LOWER than the 30%. You don't start your negotiation at the place you want to END UP.

I've also heard talking heads and repugs on TV all day claiming the public doesn't support the bill. Of course just a few minutes before on the same station a poll showed the public was FOR THE BILL 52%. So, why didn't the hosts on MSNBC correct the idiots on their shows claiming the public hates the bill? Don't they pay any attention to what is being reported on their own network?

Te dems took what should have been a slam dunk and turned it into a quagmire that they will be lucky to get themselves out of.
  • ezpz · 10 months ago
Anyone know what's in the bill and what's out?
What did they give in to the Republicans with and what did they remove to appease the jerks who know two words and two words only? - TAX CUTS.

Where is it posted on line?
  • aquarius2 · 10 months ago
Good question--where is a copy of the bill so everyone can read it. I thought this was supposed to a transparency type government
  • Same Stripes · 10 months ago
    Just a couple questions...

We know that there are several companies that can't manage themselves to the point that now, to keep the doors open they need to be bailed out. And we know that the only group that has proven to be a worse budget manager is the US Govt.

So how is either of these groups spending more of our money beneficial? The answer to too much waste, is waste more? Going further into debt is going to make us more financially stable? Are you guys really buying this, so much so that you are arguing how fast they can waste more money?
  • John · 10 months ago
I don't know, but my gut tells me there is something else going on behind the scenes. Just heard on the 10pm news that the senate broke for the evening and now Reid is saying he will call them back Saturday and possibly Sunday as well, but he doesn't expect a vote at the earliest until Tuesday of next week.
Interesting that Obama is going to address the nation on Monday as well as the Big Bang announcement from Treasury Secretary Geithner as to what he is going to do with the banks. Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling that another shoe is going to drop and the pansies in the senate want to wait until after the President and Geithner make their respective announcements before they sign off on the bailout bill?

I have a idea how President " OBAMA " can get this so called
Economic Stimulus passed ! El' Presidente' himself, the NASTY

Wow, all those arbitrarily capitalized "LETTERS", meaningless "QUOTATION MARKS" and "mucho's" inappropriate APOSTROPHE's really don't make your already POINTLES'S POST any more "HELPFUL". The mile-long ELLIPSI'S at the end also added little beside's ENTERTAINMENT "value", you GOP troll.

  • N.J. · 10 months ago
Absolutely. the "so called pork" in the bill is largly consists of the government BUYING a lot of products that will add an immediate stimulus to the economy. Buying new computers etc is still consumption.

On the other hand the last tax cuts the Bush administration gave, 300 dollar tax rebates were promised to stimulate the economy. but like all tax cuts, Republicans cannot guarantee where they will be spent or even if they will be. As a a result, most of the last round of tax cut "stimulus' did not prevent the country from sliding into a deeper recession, because much of the money was used to pay off previous debts or simply held onto in fear of further economic problems.

Only the government can spend, and spend in in the American economy where it needs to be spent to create jobs and slow or halt the economic decline.

Polls now indicate that if the stimulus package succeeds, Democrats are looking at a 12 to 20 year majority in the federal government.

Republicans are attempting to do their best to hold onto power by weakening the bill and trying to make it fail, at the expense of millions of Americans.

Where are all those people again that thought it was a good idea to suck up to Liebercon? This is where it gets you - no where.
