AMERICAblog: Slate: Rumors of more Monicas

  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    More Monicas? Gee, ya think?

The guy's been cheating on his wife ever since they said "I do." Do you really think he stopped after he was out of the White House when he had no problem doing it when he was in the White House?

As soon as he started those book tours to college campuses, I was thinking "Oh man, that sounds like trouble."

what does this say about her judgement.

why hasn't she distanced herself from him?

does she share his views on marriage?
  • vwcat · 1 year ago
I've been hearing rumors for a few years. I read last year when they were in the Hamptons some in the know were saying that the marriage is a front for Hillary's political career and that Bill has several girlfriends around.
Commonsense would say that if Bill has been messing around all his adult life then, it is hard to believe he suddenly changed and went all faithfull after Monica. Right.

Shouldn't all the lies, the vicious attacks, the still to be revealed secrets, the unrevealed donor lists, the connections to slimy characters, the continuous stories of Bill's philandering, the yet to be explained pardons, ALL remind many Democrats of how secretive and divisive the Bill Clinton WH was, and that we DO NOT want to go through this garbage again?
I wish the Hillary supporters opened up their brains just a wee bit.
  • KerrynowCampau · 1 year ago
"it is hard to believe he suddenly changed and went all faithful after Monica. Right."

Exactly. And had Hillary left Bill many years ago, would she be a Senator today? Running for President? Some couples have an arrangement. Granted it is not for everybody. Would I put up with someone like Bill to further my career? No f*cking way, but then I am not Hillary.

I live in NYC and we know all the connected people in every field and Bill is still a horndog. And there are so many other problems with the other donations and his personal business. A never ending fountain of crap for the general election.

I think this is one of the reasons I don't want Hillary. I don't want to relive all this crap and I fear huge mountains of new Bill Crap.

I used to be a huge supporter, wanting to go back, have Bill in the White House again, but now, I would rather go to the future with Obama than back in time.

When I was at Yale in the seventies, the mens locker room area of the gym was a notorious trysting place for quickie oral sex. A labrynth of lockers, and showers, and hidden little corners for all sorts of "gay until graduation" goings on. No names...no connections...just good quickie gay sex.

When Bill ran for Prez in '92, an awful lot of us sort of raised an eyebrow..."does he look familiar?"

You can do that math. Bill loves a good lip lock on his one-eyed weasel and the gender, at least in the seventies, was a moot point.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Bill Clinton seems addicted to sex, and people with addictions cannot control their urges. Obviously, he must be extra careful now, and covering his tracks well. Voters have to ask themselves if they want this couple with their extra heavy, yet to be revealed, baggage, back in the WH, and with so much at stake for this country, do we need another Clinton term.? It will be back to secretive pardons, Roger Clinton and the Rodham brothers and their antics, nepotism, Lincoln bedroom being rented to prospective donors, all the dishonest "gates" again, the right wingers attacking the Democrats every day, and all the crap that the Clintons put this country too.
Aren't we sick of these Bush and Clinton families, and the mess they put this country in?
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
Here's the actual Slate intro to the book review:

"Carol Felsenthal's new book about Bill Clinton's post-presidential years, Clinton in Exile, is often catty, occasionally malicious, and overly reliant on unnamed sources. It's also pretty boring; when Felsenthal's not muckraking, she's content to trot out newspaper accounts of Clinton's foundation work and his appearances on the guest-speaker circuit. So don't bother reading all 313 pages."

Seems like much ado about nothing.

McCain cheated on his first wife and actually left her for the mistress. I doubt very much his campaign will seek to make marital fidelity an issue.

While he was President of the United States - with a 19 year-old intern and a cigar?
  • SteamingPile · 1 year ago
Monica was 22. Besides, what difference does it make? 19 is legal in all 50 states. At least McCain is too old for this to be much of a problem.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
    Dad:

I'm going from memory here, but I believe McCain left his wife after she became disabled and after she waited for him to come home from Nam. It wasn't pretty.

Say what you want about former President Clinton, but when it comes to maintaining a marriage John McCain will not be throwing mud on this issue.

If any recent Bill Clinton philandering comes out during the campaign, wouldn't John McCain's history (and keep in mind he, unlike Bill, is a candidate) also then be explored?

So in the general election this might not be as big a deal.

I don't consider Hillary Clinton as a part of an "us". If she steals the nomination I will vote for McCain rather than stay home, just to double up my protest vote. That will be even better than voting for Nader.
  • GrandEd · 1 year ago
For those of us in this business for as long as I've been in it, we've heard rumors for ever about Bill's proclivity to chase strange.

And, don't forget the "rumors" that floated for years about Hillary and her fun times. If I'm not mistaken, Anonymous, aka Joe Klein, wrote in "Primary Colors" about her and a key campaign aide in the 92 race. Of course, that was fiction. lol

You're absolutely correct, if this isn't vetted, as Hillary calls it, the 527s etc will have a field day with it should she win the nomination. Let's get it out now.

When are we going to start dragging out McCain's Monicas?
  • Upland_Oddball · 1 year ago
At he core of these rumors is a kernel of hard truth that cannot be denied away. Bill Clinton, for all of his obvious intelligence and devotion to wonkery, has a need for spening alone time with obivious fellow "Horn-Dogs." He not only has a drive to seek out such friends, but to get into the purient gutter with them and play "one-ups" with them in terms of sexual and frat-boy exploits. Ron Burkle isn't the only one. Doesn't anybody remember Bills very close Buddy-dom with the notorious Dick "Foot-Fetish" Morris during the middle years of his presidency? I'm convinced that Morris encouraged Bill to drop the caustion he had adopted when he first ran for office in 1991, and to pursue his inclinations, which led to Monica. Morris may even have been planted by elements of the GOP to achieve this purpose.

This adolescent streak in Bill Clinton will always serve to feed these rumors and make them plausible.
  • dad · 1 year ago

Even if it could be proven that McCain cheated behind his wife's back with dead corpses, live boys, ugly dogs, and entire flocks of livestock, it wouldn't make any difference in the upcoming campaign because his enablers in the MSM would cover it up. There would be a feeding frenzy among the Tweetys, the Timmehs, the Georgie-Bois, and others in getting the Clinton stuff out, while dirt that is a hundred times more uglly about Saint John would be buried or explained away.

I was really, REALLY hoping this campaign we wouldn't have to rehash the scandal that was Bill and Monica, but since we are, just a point of clarification:

Monica in the White House as a victimized "Intern," with all the faux-virginal implications the "young, innocent intern" label implied, was untrue. She was NOT an innocent, virginal 19 year old sucking on Bill's one-eyed trouser trout, her virginity having been long lost through fucking for grades in college.

I can see where Bill's philandering might give the Republicans a lot to toss about in the General Election however, I still think it is a damn shame when a candidate's personal life becomes THE issue instead of the real issues that should be discussed. Just like Obama's minister, what does this have to do with what the candidate wants to accomplish?

I say leave Bill and his round heels to the Republicans, I think there is more than enough to defeat Hillary's bid for this nomination.

I recall your comment earlier this year about potential Bill rumor issues and found this item somewhere... didn't mark down who wrote about it. It's from the gossip blog Gawker. Wonder if the picture relates to any of the stuff referred to in the Slate article. Of course, just scrolling the articles associated with the tag Ron Burkle on the Gawker site is an education. Amazing how many of them mention Bill Clinton -- in the title even.

How much of it is true? I have no idea. But I'm sure that the truthiness won't matter to the Republican 527's.

So I read on the Huff post that Clinton will, on May 31st, take the nuclear option. Someone in the Democratic Party needs to read to Clinton the agreement she signed with the DNC to abide by their decision to not seat Florida and Michigan. Either Senator Clinton has a very short memory OR she just doesn't care what the hell she does to the Democratic Party.

I think there should be some concession to Florida and Michigan, even though they went against the DNC, but Clinton wants it all. Is this how I want a president to behave, talk out of both sides of their mouth? Not me, I have had almost 8 years of a president that does that.,

If anyone believes that their marriage is real, they live in a fantasy world. At this point, it is simply for political and economic advantage.

We all knew there were Monicas before there even was a Monica. She was the only one that they had hard evidence on. And to think that this guy just stopped being Bill, well, that's just crazy.

Bill has always been a sleeze, but at this point, I'd love for it to all come out about the guy. He crossed the line when it came to his remarks about Obama (and his lies about many a thing) and I'd be glad to see him exposed for the scum he is, once again.

  • voxpopgirl · 1 year ago
Well, there's a whole other kind of "Monica" rumor that's been swirling among the rightwing online communities for over a year, which of course, no Democratic campaign would dare to circulate (unless you're Team Hillary).

That rumor involves Hillary Clinton's very very very close "relationship" with her top female aide and "body person" Huma Abedin.

Who's That Girl? Look here. http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos/humaabedi...

Why, last April, even the NY Observer floated out an odd gushy puff piece on Huma Abedin with the suggestive title "Hillary's Mystery Woman", saying that "Huma Abedin has become a sort of mythical figure".

The Observer article was peppered with all sorts of hot button words and phrases, "discreet", "Muslim", "No one knows anything about her" etc.

Harpers confirmed the circulation of this "rumour" last November.

And, apparently, it seems that the Washington Press is already totally aware of the Hill and Huma rumor:

    http://bigheaddc.com/2007/09/11/hillary-lesbian...
    http://slog.thestranger.com/2007/11/hillary_cli...
    http://www.nationalscold.com/2008/03/in-depth-r...

Can you imagine the headlines, hand-fed by scurrilous Repug operatives?
"Hillary and her Lesbian Muslim Lover!" -- who spent half of her life in Saudi Arabia!"

And as a Muslim, the Repugs will be all over Abedin's family ties to Al Qaeda.

Now, it's not that most rational-thinking Dems care about or give credence to what goes on behind closed doors with their political leaders' sex lives, or of any silly guilt-by-association allegations to ties with radicals or Muslims , or even just the rumors about such drizzle (unless it's about Barack Obama, right?).

SO, for Dems in general, the frame is not, per se, the allegation that Hillary is a lesbian.

It's how a key element of this dumbass rumor will be received by Hillary's strongest supporters - Older Women who will hear about it repeatedly as it is pounded day in and day out by the Rethugs and the MSM:

That this once-wronged woman by Bill -- this wife -- this 60 year old woman who shares such empathy with her solid base of Older Women. Supporters, is, well....

    Cheating on her husband.
    (With a woman).

As far as I know. {cough}.

Really, must people waste their time on this trivia? If you're focused on Wright or bimbo eruptions or faulty memories about Bosnia or lapel pins or when your hand must be placed over your heart, you've just lapsed into the utter trivialization of the political process, the grim results of which have been pretty obvious to this outsider over the last 30 years. There are, as you well know (and have reported), more important things on the world's plate at the moment. And everytime this kind of crap comes up it just points out how easy it is to distract people from those issues with shiny meaningless baubles. It's painful to watch. If ever there was a time when focus was needed, it is right now. Leave this crap to the National Enquirer (or the NYT)

Start a rumor. Make it newsworthy. If you don't know if it is true, if it hasn't been vetted, then STFU!
  • debrazza · 1 year ago
That is exactly the point. We need to ask Bill this now so that it is vetted for the fall. If it is not true, then fine, if it is we've saved the party ;)

How do we know if it is true if it hasn't been vetted exactly.

And the point is, Hillary has not been vetted.
  • voxpopgirl · 1 year ago
    KateStone I hear ya.

My comment below is about the Media and how they will be fully complicit in the mainstream laundering of this crap in the general election, about a "story" they already have heard.

They're just waiting for their cue, to play their part in this ridiculous narrative.

Remember, Harpers -- a mainstream media organization -- chose to bring the mere "discussion that a rumor extisted" in into the light of day, under the guise/cover of a story about the Right v.s. Left political "dirty tricks" game playing (in the Palmetto State).

The "pretext" the writer tried to use to justify the mere mentioning of the Hillary/Huma Abedin rumor was that, quote: "(I)t's not just Republicans who play rough in South Carolina, and then linking to a story about Mitt Romney and his campaign.

YET -- if you click the link about the "it's not just Republicans" link in their Huma story, it lead to a far more cynical than titillating story title ("Making Mitt Romney:
    How to fabricate a conservative"
) -- about a rather benign non-rumor-based piece about Mitt Romney.

So here we see a Harpers writer stretching to great lengths to find a reason and a way to bring it into the light of day into the mainstream. So there it sits, ready to be "legitimately" referred to by the MSM (looking for cover) -- in the general election -- (if Hillary's the Dem nominee) IF and WHEN the Repugs slither it out via their operatives who, in their role as "anonymous sources", whisper into their respective "journalist" ear.

The MSM and dear dear Charlie Gibson will, with great ease, "report" that it's "all over the internet" that Hillary Clinton is... dot dot dot. The same pretext he used to trot out the Ayers "association" to Obama to 11 million viewers during the last ABC News Dem "Debate".

There's a reason the REPUGS have not pushed this one really hard to the point of it surfacing now.

Chances are they are simply sitting tight, keeping their powder verrrry dry, waiting and praying (see: Rush Limbaugh/Operation Chaos, Bill Kristol, David Frum, Joe Scarborough, Newt Gingrich and Richard Mellon Scaife) that Hillary Clinton becomes the Dem opponent (in an election year where the scales tip completely AGAINST a Republican win) so that they can unload their biggest, dirtiest most disgusting ammunition -- stuff they have already long ago collected and compiled -- good, bad OR fabricated for the past 8 years since Clinton stepped into politics by becoming a Senator and signaling her likely intention to run for President in 2008.

And the media, will oblige the beast that is The Might Wurlitzer, and simply "act" -- no, "report" on the numerous of "internet posts", "anonymous sources", as well as refer to the previously published Harpers story, and ramp things up by quoting those NYObserver quotes on Ms. Abedin's mysteriousness ("No one knows anything about her") and be further blitzfaxed as well as fueled by a barrage of BlackBerry messages.

I always thought she went that way...

Hillary's friends and associates and history have not been brushed under the rug. Your comment is proof of that. What I said was that most of the folks didn't know Obama at all, and we are now getting to know him.

Let's face it, Hillary has been in the limelight for a long long long long time. The folks know a lot about her.

"Just like Obama's minister, what does this have to do with what the candidate wants to accomplish?"

Not a thing. However, no one really knew anything about Obama before he decided to run for POTUS. This run up to the nomination has been good for the folks, in that we have learned more about him thru his associations. I always told my kids that "You will be known by the people you associate with".
