AMERICAblog: Small Democratic donors shouldn't pay off the debt of the multi-millionaires

  • OneManComotion · 1 year ago
It seems like the bail out of Wall Street, taking care of people that can not manage their monies on the backs of the many.

I don't know... I have mixed feelings. I mean, I used to like Hillary... and she is a Democrat (supposedly). If she were to honestly try her best to help Obama win the general, I don't see anything wrong with retiring some of her debt. I mean, we donated so that he'd win the presidency, right? So, I wouldn't be terribly offended if she were gracious and we helped her out. But I can understand why some people wouldn't feel that way, and I respect that.
  • lilybart · 1 year ago
Good point, IF she works for us.
  • catty · 1 year ago
Don't forget that she is still choosing to drag this campaign out ,so let her and her supporters foot the bill. She ran a debased campaign and shouldn't be rewarded for this. She's a Dirty politician who won't be forgotten.

For someone who PRIDES herself on being smart you'd think she should see the writing on the wall~

Just like Bush, no exit plan!!!!
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    OK.

I know the blogosphere has a lot of trouble with Biden, and he can sometimes be a loose cannon, but he's a slasher and also has the foreign policy creditials Obama might need if there's another terrorist attack in the fall.

    Just sayin'
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
    this is a hard call-
my first inclination is to say hell no. she blew the money and she shouldn't get help from money given to Obama...

but if she really gets on board and starts supporting the Democratic effort, rather than just the Clinton effort, i wouldn't mind if she got some assistance.
  • lilybart · 1 year ago
Excellent point and no way do we pay any dates going forward because no one should have to pay for a lost cause.
  • JoyP · 1 year ago
I agree. While I believe the small vendors that are owed money should get paid, the Clintons are wealthy people who can afford it. Can they use money in the General Election fund to pay these? (I don't know, just throwing it out there). I'd be really disappointed if some of my money went to fund her dreams of grandiosity.
  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
    Agree.
  • lilybart · 1 year ago
Also, money in small donations, is like votes really. I have voted with my wallet for Obama (and Kleeb!) and not for Hillary. And the Clintons are rich. Most of us are not.
  • Danjr0802 · 1 year ago
I donated to Obama and if it means this ends without further destroying the party and/or Obama, feel free to use my $50.00 for such a purpose.

And frankly, while I'm not happy with Clinton's attacks, part of me feels for her. She like many women, put their husbands' career first and I think she would be a better President than Bill was. Life doesn't work out the way it should though and it's no reason to act like a petulant child when you don't get what you think morally should have been yours. But on the other hand, I can feel compassion for why she is so frustrated and carrying this on even if I hold her decision to do so in disdain.
  • Danjr0802 · 1 year ago
...ignore this post. Evidently my edit actually saved though it said it did not.
  • BorninUSA · 1 year ago
When I first heard talk of helping Hillary pay off her debt, I thought no way. But now I have changed my mind (flip flopped if you will) and we do need Hillary's supporters and if we decline to help her it will really turn off her very loyal followers. Think about it, many of her supporters have already said they will not vote for Obama. If we turn our backs on Hillary's money problems we will no doubt lose more of her supporters.

Maybe Hillary isn't so dumb after all. Maybe she is purposely running up more debt in her campaign thinking Obama will have to bail her out. I just can't trust her (or Bill). Sorry, I really used to like the Clintons but the past few months their true colors have been showing.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Obama will gain more support running on principle than running on principal and buying Clinton voters. Clinton supporters that contirbuted to Hillary's cvampaign have lost money they will never recover. Paying Hillary $11 million for potnetially getting their support does not get anyone money but the party that should be the biggest loser. Those that will vote for Obama will not over time shit if Hillary's campaign does not pay her back.
  • bumpkis · 1 year ago
Hillary has money problems? Who knew?
  • mikeyDe · 1 year ago
That proposal pretty much sums up what's wrong with our system. For the privilege of living here we the people must pay tribute (in both senses of the word, praise and riches) to the owners of the country. And, in order to join the ranks of the owners, Obama must pay his dues. This time to bail out the Clintons, next time who will he have to bail out? I don't have a good feeling about this.
  • Linzack · 1 year ago
After such a pooly run and managed campaign, why should the little people be paying for the mistakes and gaffs of the candidate. Sorry. Let her get a second job and pay off her own debt. It's not like she doesn't have the money. D.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Further, the Clintons and their supporters pumped money into Hillary campaighn when this thing was over long ago. Aside from using the borrowed funds to smear Obama, the continuation of a walking dead campaign required Obama supporters to infuse money and effort to put this glue horse out of her misery, which money the Obama campaign spent to put it away.

If Obama is really about change then he will refuse. If Obama is part of the same old game and same old DC establishment gang he will give in and pay off her debt then get on the podium and talk about change while giving a wink andf a nod to the establishment he renounces.

Political consequences notwithstanding, Clinton needs to appreciate from a personal monetary perspective the consequences of her continued negative efforts in the campaign when is was well past over.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Not crazy about the idea, but I gave my money with no strings attached and I don't think I should be adding strings now.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
I say: fuck that! Let Mark Penn give back the millions HE plundered from HRC's campaign (while he drove it off a cliff). If money I gave to the Obama campaign is used to reward/excuse HRC's miserable failure as CINC of her own campaign, the top of my head will come to a point!
  • interlude · 1 year ago
also at TPM i saw this report:

Hillary Clinton might be on the ropes, but her remarks at a fundraiser last night show that she still expects one demographic group to come out strong for her in the remaining contests: Women voters.

"Do you know difficult it is for women to stand up and say we are the best at anything?" Clinton said last night at a "Generations of Women for Hillary" fundraiser in Washington. "The Democratic Party has to know that women are the core, women have to be at the table and women are going to be heard as we continue in these contests until they finally end."

so, i guess her working class act is old news? no more tossing back Crown Royals with the truckies?
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Much like the unfortunate scenario where a women that suffers from a husband beating her will return to that husband.
  • dolcissimo1 · 1 year ago
As much as it pains me to say it, it would cost the Obama campaign much more money to continue campaigning through the rest of the primaries than it would for him to simply pay Clinton's debts now to secure her dropping out of the campaign. Even though I sure as hell didn't intend for my money to go to Hillary Clinton to repay debts she procured smearing the presumptive Democratic nominee months after she'd already lost, it's either that or spend far more money beating a candidate who's already lost.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Clinton cannot stay oin if she has no money and can get no money because the race is over.
  • consult · 1 year ago
This reminds me of the rumor that the Clintons destroyed the White House before they moved out, which turned out to be completely untrue. How many of you so fond now of trashing the Clintons have pictures of yourself with Bill that you have proudly displayed. I happen to know some of you do. Have you turned them face down??
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Screw paying off her debt when she continues with this:

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2...

Time to put the full cpourt press on and bury Clinton until she concedes. Even a severed head of a dead snake can bite until the head is crushed. Barrack needs to say to Clinton either you are finished when your brains splatter on the heel of my boot for all the world to see from the incessant pressure only a winner can apply or you publicly get on you knees and shine my boots by conceding. Either way you are finished, just pick your demise. And by the way, you will get nothing and like it.
  • purplegirl · 1 year ago
Though I can see both sides of this argument, I'm in the camp of letting Clinton pay her own bills. It's not like she doesn't have more money than it takes to live. If she has to forgo buying a mansion later, well, my heart bleeds for her. With the costs of everything going up and up, I may have to forgo a meal here and there and I'm already juggling bills. It isn't fair to those of us who scraped up a small donation for Obama to have him give her our money. If I would've wanted Clinton to have my donation I would've given it to her already. Making it sound like we need to have Obama haters love us by throwing Clinton money is insane. That money is not going to buy their love. Clinton's the one making the decision to carry on this pathetic side show, let her foot the bill.

Another great example by the Clintons; spending, and continuing to spend money that they don't have. I'm with Josh Marshall-let them pay their own debts.
  • dula · 1 year ago
Obama's money should be used to destroy McCain in the General...not for bribing Hillary to get out of the race.
  • mikeyDe · 1 year ago
Gravel's still in the race. Shouldn't Obama pay those debts too?
  • lynn47 · 1 year ago
As a strong Obama backer I can honestly say if he gives her the money I will be asking for my donations back. I do not beleive I will be alone on this one. Millionaires get enough of are money as it is...
  • pcvirginiabeach · 1 year ago
You know... "My DD" is still pushing for Hillary and enhancing the divide. http://jerome-armstrong.mydd.com/ tells the story... they are still focused on Race.

Obama won this on the issues. Race is an issue... the way in which the Clintons divided the electorate by race, hurt them. More importantly however, Obama won on

    1) His vision for our future. Hard work, to pull us out of this mess.
    2) The war. His opposition to it, in contrast with Hillary.
    3) Better message discipline... and consitency on the issues. Such as NAFTA, Gun Control.
    4) The gas tax, and other issues, which made most of us beleive that Hillary would promote herself, above the interests of smart policy, and our party.

The fact is that Obama won this on issues and message. "MY DD" still wants to make this all about race... it is not. It is about issues, and yes, race is an issue, but it is not the biggest one.
  • BorninUSA · 1 year ago
OK, I've been thinking this for a while and now I am saying it. Is Hillary waiting for the phone to ring some morning at 3:00 with the message that Obama has been hit by a truck (or something worse) and she will have to be the party nominee. She acts like she is waiting for just such a happening. Even counting on it. And don't act so surprised, some of you have been thinking this too.

Ther is some good that can come from her continuing to run NY is getting a good look at their jr senator, they may want to rethink a few things too!!

She lavishly spent the money of her supporters let them bail her out.

Looking at rhe two campaign's financial mgmt ,who would you say has excutive level mgmt acumen with money. A well ran campaign that's NOT bankrupt,no drama, high moral and in the black, speaks volume.

Hillary relied on super tuesday being the end all with no plan afterwards. She's been out since feb 5 no one has bothered to tell her,(or too afraid.)
  • chrisnyc · 1 year ago
Again, this site lately is a perfect example of Obama supporters turning off very-much-needed Clinton supporters.

She has done a great job for the state of NY. We don't need people telling us to rexamine her. If the shoe was on the other foot, would obamaniacs be happy hearing people tell them to quit. Don't get me wrong, I've repeatedly been saying she needs to stop, but the attitude with which it's said here and other places will turn a lot of very involved people off....maybe not enough so they don't vote, but enough to make them less involved.

November is too important for ridiculous hatred of another DEMOCRAT to ruin things.
  • catty · 1 year ago
I never said I hate Hillary,or she should quit. Her and her" worshipers" are
emotional and irrational to even consider Mccain. You see them on tv saying
they will give Mccain their vote. I say good riddance stay there. What better
gift to give the "repugnicans,"than infidels, who don't think!!She will have
problems in NY,if Obama loses...by the way she ran and the dirty tactics she
used.Since you have your knickers in a bunch go to youtube, search thr

  • stranded · 1 year ago
Wow, just a day or so ago when this site encouraged me to give to the Obama campaign to stop Hillary's death threat against the party, I almost did so. I'm glad I waited. I was concerned that the money might be used in some way for Hillary and now it looks like it might happen. NO WAY am I going to give money to anyone who might potentially use it to benefit the Clinton machine and those people's destructive egos. She should have dropped out long, long ago but kept on bleeding her campaign dry just to stroke her own sick and twisted ego. Paying her off would be the end of my support for Obama. I will trust that he's better than that.
  • Hawk · 1 year ago
Anyone giving AFTER the Kitchen Sink announcement can have that money given to them. At that point they knew their money was going for bad politics!

Hillary's shake down artistry knows no bounds
  • Lilly · 1 year ago
I was feeling charitable to Hillary until I read her "white voters" comment. Now I say SCREW HER.
  • stranded · 1 year ago
Exactly, Lilly. Although I lost any charitable feeling for the Clintons, oh, around the time of DOMA. But really, isn't this all just EXTORTION?
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Good call Lilly! This is the kind of stuff the creates a racial divide in the country. There is no way that Obama could be where he is if millions of whites didn't support him. Hillary is disconnected from reality.
  • MotorCityBadBoy · 1 year ago
I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but after reading her "Obama can't win white voters" comments in USA today I say screw her. If he couldn't win white votes, why is he winning? I think she's poll tested that statement and it seems to be freezing the superdelegates. She's trying to hold on for West Virginia so she can say she has a win. But no matter what, she loses. Now I can officially say I hate her. It's a strong word but I can't think of another that accurately describes how lowly I think of her lack of character or principles. She's George Bush in drag. I still love that morph of her and Romney... classic.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
I'm in full agreement on this one! Personally, I haven't give to the Obama campaign to see that money spent towards getting rid of Hillary's debt! This is something Obama should really steer clear of. I think it would actually piss a lot of supporters off if he made an attempt to clear any of her debt.

Let the DNC step up and declare Obama the victor.
  • Heather · 1 year ago
Thank you for continuing this discussion. My husband and I were talking about this last night. We did not (and do not) donate to Obama so he can pay off Clinton's personal debts. I have a hard time believing that they are considering this.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Good point Heather. The spin will be that Obama bought the nomination with cash. He needs to clarify what they will do.
  • Karma · 1 year ago
Are we sure this rumor/report is coming from the Clinton campaign? ..or could it be a McCain camp underhanded way to disenfranchise Obama supporters so that anyone that has given money, and/or would have given more money, creates a backlash resulting in Obama having a harder time to raise cash for his campaign? I can see how this would benefit both Clinton and MCCain if Obama's strengths at raising money is tarnished by rumors of a blackmail payoff to Clinton to get out of a race she has already lost.

Obama needs to make a statement soon and deny the possibility of this ever happening.
  • dula · 1 year ago
If he does, Hillary supporters and Republicans will just say that Obama had to pay off Hillary to win the nomination...that he didn't win it fair and square. No, Hillary is out of cash; Obama won't have to spend much to wait out the rest of this Primary season. It's the principal of the thing.
  • Andyz · 1 year ago
I did not contribute to Obama to help pay off the irresponsible spending of a reckless candidate. Let the Clintons get their money from their rich friends, the Saudis.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
The first time I heard this was out of the mouth of Tim Russert on national TV at the end of the evening on Tuesday, after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries. I mentioned it here and said I was totally opposed to one dime of money sent to support Obama to go to pay Clinton's debt.

When money has run out and candidates cannot raise more, the candidate usually withdraws from the race. Not so with Clinton, she continued on with self financing, much to the dismay of a number of people, people who sent even more money to Obama to defeat her. So in essence, support money to Obama would, if he pays her debt, be going to pay the finances of Clinton to carry on her nasty and negative campaign.

I seriously doubt if Obama would then have the same fund raising ability. No one who sent money to Obama to defeat Hillary wants to see it spent in this way.
  • moongr · 1 year ago
I too heard Russert say this on Tuesday night, and was like WTF!!! Obama should pay Mark Penn's fee?!?! And if the shoe was on the other foot, Hillary would hand over millions of dollars from her supporters to make nice!!! NO Way. Obama's going to need every penny until November. I think it is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard so far........ (this week).
  • mmedefarge · 1 year ago
It was very hard for me to send money to Obama, but I found a way because I want my children and potential grandchildren to have a future. The thought of some of my hard labor going to pay off that evil woman's debt---most of which was accrued while slinging mud at Obama--makes me very upset. I almost emailed his website when I heard the rumors, then I decided that they were probably rumors. To think of us poor working people paying for the likes of the Clintons, Sid Vicious, Mark Penn, etc to live in luxury is nauseating. It occurred to me the other day that just the maintenance to keep H looking presentable must require an army of worker bees---hairdresser, makeup, a dermatologist on call in every city for the botox injections, wardrobe maintenance, etc. Just think of the cost of that alone on a daily basis. Not with my money, NO WAY!
  • fl79tr · 1 year ago
How much did she spend back in January on fucking DONUTS!!! NO FUCKING WAY!!! Most of the debt that she has built up since then was spent campaigning for broke ass McCain anyway. It'll be a cold day in hell.
  • chrisnyc · 1 year ago
This finally confirms that a large number of people have been so blinded by a very right-wingish hatred of the clintons that they've lost all sense of reality.

If you are Obama, you offer this to her, and basically say, for cheaper than fighting you to June 3, I will pay off your debt. It's less money than he will spend dealing with the crap she will throw and it finishes this thing. It's called a bargaining chip.

You all need to put the hatred aside for a second and think about what it accomplishes. This is the same sort of thinking that has some people saying they would rather have mccain then vote for clinton...which pretty much equates to blowing your head off because you got a hangnail.

I'm ready for this to be over. As NYCer I supported Hillary, but she pissed me off. I want old Hillary back and I want the party to start beating on McBush. If paying her debt off does it, then, serisously, it's a small price to pay.
  • mikeyDe · 1 year ago
Why doens't McCain pay off Hillary's debt? He was the main beneficiary of her spending/
  • mikeyDe · 1 year ago
And what about public campaign financing? All the candidates had access to it. The ones who opted out gambled that they could raise more than the maximum the law allowed. If Obama had loaned his campaign money, gambled that he could defeat all 37 Democrats running for president, and lost, I'd say too bad to him too.
  • berlin88 · 1 year ago
Even if he paid her -- and I would very very VERY much hate the idea of my nickels and dimes that I sent him and pinched off other expenses going to her -- I do not for a minute believe she would relent in her harrassment of Obama. She'd just use this for an argument against him, like she twists everything else. Whoever suggested this "solution" must be 1) clear out of his mind and 2) not have sent any hard-earned money to Obama's campaign. I am not a millionaire nor ever will be. The money I sent to his campaign to me is the equivalent of whatever the Clintons took out of their own, very large pockets. I gave it because I wanted Obama to become president, not so he could pay off some millionaire woman who has tried -- and will keep trying -- everything she could to destroy the man.
  • Oldnovice · 1 year ago
I heard about the precedent for this while driving home from an out-of-state trip yesterday. Nearly put my foot through the car radio! The precedent, however, is from the days when campaigns were financed by "party donors". Obama's campaign has not been financed so much in this way as from the bottom up... folks who'd been moved specifically BY HIM!

The only way I wouldn't object is if the $$$ were raised specifically for this purpose. In that way, the folks who wouldn't mind paying for it could donate while the rest of us could abstain.
  • BoiseNick · 1 year ago
I pledged 25 hard-earned dollars to the Obama camp but I'm Not sending it 'til I KNOW it won't go to pay off the Clinton Mafia's debt !
