Speaking of outages…I had the interesting experience of driving across metro Cincinnati during our area’s rough kiss from Ike between 3 and 4pm this afternoon. Amazing destruction with a huge number of large trees broken at their base or in half, structural damage and widespread power outages (at one point 680,000 out of power in an 800,000 total pop) in the area allegedly served by huge Bush/Cheney energy contributor Duke Energy, recently acquired from the former utility Cincinnati Gas & Electric. Just got word power was restored in some of these areas in northern Kentucky but portions of south western Ohio remain in the dark. From people we've talked with the darkness hasn't been pretty...people panicked and fighting in front of powerless stores. One person reported sirens blasting for the last several hours in communities just returned to light. We heard a lot of people, on our cross metro trip at the winds peak through lightless, debris-filled intersections and powerless stores and gas stations, wondering how our obviously fragile infrastructure would have reacted if this had been terror and not just strong wind (sustained gusts upward 85mph). Our country energy coop had an outage of a few seconds, here at home in the boonies bordering Cincy metro. I wonder if this will have a political effect what with Duke's proximity to Darth and Jr.?

I would guess that many will see SP's vast knowledge of energy as a plus in dealing with such an emergency and JM's reform minded approach to government as a way to get to work on improving the infrastructure.

If I was advising the Obama campaign I'd do an anti McCain version of his absurd 2012 State of the Union but done in a deadpan scifi report from the end of the world that made the mistake of electing McCain/Palin back in the good old days of 2008. Could sway the frightened bunny element. Variety of spot plot lines possible...

So, I'm hearing that Lehman Bros. is filing for bankruptcy and Bank of America is buying Merill Lynch to try to save it from failing.
Just in case anybody in the Nation of Whiners thought our economic problems were getting better.
Yeah, but I'm hearing that there is some question as to whether the gov't will prop up Lehman and whomever snaps them up. And, if they do, is it the last big investment firm that will get such a deal. And what happens after the last deal because this just isn't going to go on forever.
I'm thinking tomorrow hide the money under the mattress.

Yeah I noticed Sitemeter had some "New and Improved" service that they decided to roll out on Saturday or early Sunday. I think they rolled it back to the old setup later on. Painful....
