AMERICAblog: Sotomayor updates from around the Web

President Obama should be able to steamroll Sotomayor through to confirmation. When a moderate like Sonia Sotomayor is considered a liberal, we can see how far right the Supreme Court has gone. Where are the great liberal Supremes like Warren, Marshall, Douglas, and Murphy? Roe v Wade and the civil rights decisions of the 50s and 60s would never have happened with the SC of the last 30 years.

Maintaining the status quo is probably the best we can hope for. Today's Democratic Party is what the Republicans used to be. A corporatist party of elite technocrats who are competent, but not terribly imaginative. And the Republicans?
They've gone completely off the deep end of Loonyville's cliff. This is all Reagan's fault, you know. With his winning smile and soft spoken demeanor, the Gipper made the right-wing "cute and cuddly" again. Racism became synonymous with patriotism. Homophobia with family values. Greed with freedom.

Is it just firefox where the video embed spills over the main blog column, and into the media/opinion links column?

The GOPers do not like latinos in a position of power. The GOP will make up all sorts of fake reasons she should not be approved, but their real motives will be to suppress the latinos in the United States.

When it was speculated that a Latina was being considered for the SC, I, like many others, cheered. We do need diversity on the SC. However, based on her life experiences and looking at her record, I have the feeling Sotomayor may disappoint many of us. Her life experiences include being a prosecutor, representing business interests as a partner in private practice, and hearing a string of mostly business cases as a judge. This informs her life experiences as much as overcoming her humble beginnings. Not much of a record on civil rights on which we can judge her. Her record is very mixed and she's been all over the map, as far as I can tell without looking at every case she's decided. I never assume that simply because a person might fit a particular demographic that they are a "slam dunk" for the rights of all.
I worry about a sixth Catholic on the SC bench as well as her record. We can only speculate on how she would rule on issues, and what her judicial philosphy is on gay rights, abortion rights, the right to die, and other cultural and constitutional issues. Hopefully, we'll get an inkling at her confirmation hearing.
BTW, if any of the reich-wingers try to question her "citizenship", people of Puerto Rican descent have been considered US citizens for 93 years whether they were born on the mainland or in Puerto Rico.

I see where Russ Feingold hails the pick as an excellent one. That's all I need to know.
