Damn! I was hoping not to mention it first!

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been lampooning the Mormon's for years. Check out their movie Orgazmo or there's always the infamous South Park episode.....but still, this sounds like it should be funny stuff. People in magical underwear singing and dancing!
  • DavidinPS · 1 year ago
Remember though, they get all soft -soft at the end of this admittedly hilarious episode."They're just simple people trying to live their lives" . Wonder if they think that now.
  • boloboffin · 1 year ago
I'll bet you this is a musical version of Orgazmo. The main character was a Mormon missionary who became a porn star to help send money back home.
  • Dwayne Decker · 1 year ago
Or maybe it'll be a splashy Evita-style biography of fitness trainer Sam Page (from the El Coyote boycott video). Check out the tagline of his blog.

Add a half cup of Mitt's desire to phase out workers...or, maybe just the union contracts...stir and, presto...a big Utah-based bowl of ever more rightwing corporate-flavored inbred, extremist zealotry...

They have been skewering the LDS for forever.

    OT but short and timely:

We all like Kool-Aid. I often find myself gulping down large amounts without even considering what it is I'm drinking. But the worse part about drinking the Kool-Aid is when its effects begin to wear off and that dull aching throb sets in.

A number of years ago, I heard Geraldo Rivera refer to the Mormon religion as "mainstream"......

I knew the dude wasn't exactly an intellectual giant.....but that statement was the essence of ignorance.

I'm not sure some of today's Mormon converts know the whole story....

I'm thinking a movie with all the appeal of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

and you meant that with SNARK, didn't you? Well, got news for ya... the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" became a cultural phenomenon. This show probably will, as well.

They've tried noisy protests, consumer boycotts, and the odd act of minor terrorism.

"Minor terrorism?" What the fuck is that? What do you expect from a right-wing rag?

Wonderful! And gee, the Mormons can justify everything, can't they? Even naming their university after a guy who had 50 wives...yeah, right, they don't "condone" polygamy at all, nosireebob.

See, there's this Angel with Gonads named Moroni...
  • Henry · 1 year ago
In late 80's or early 90's, I read a great book about Mormon murders that occured in Salt Lake. The books went into great detail about the interworkings of the church. If anyone knows the title, it is a great read.
  • sisterfaith · 1 year ago
I think it was the Mormon Murders.....and it was very interesting.
  • eclare · 1 year ago
It sounds like Under the Banner of Heaven, but that was written in 2003. It's a fantastic read, though, so I highly recommend it.
  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
There's an Angel with Gonads whose name is Moroni,
They named themselves Mormons; His name ain't Mormoni.
They have lots of children and multiple wives,
Most have an IQ of 75.

    SOUTH PARK!
  • Not original · 1 year ago
Oh please. This is not even original. The Salt Lake Acting company
has been lampooning the Mormons every year since 1978.
Trust me. Everything and anything has already been done and said about them on the stage for years now. Can you say "Been there done that"?
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
Oh please - who bothers to go to Salt Lake City? Can you say 'boring' ?
  • Not original · 1 year ago
I can say "boring". Now do you feel better?
The fact still remains the Salt Lake Acting company has been
lampooning the Mormon Church since 1978. If you have not
seen the show then you do not know what you are talking about.
    "I stand all amazed".
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
OK, you seem to have cognitive difficulties, so let me employ hyperbole: Number of people who see South Park and related productions: 1 billion. Number of people who bother to go to SLC: 100. Number of those SLC visitors who have ever heard of SLAC? 2.

I think they've already done the movie.

    It's titled ORGASMO.

My mom told me a long time ago about a review written by a major paper, like the NYT, of the grand opening / unveiling of the finished temple - I think the one in Salt Lake. It was written in such a way that was oh-so-offensive, and very funny apparently, that the Mormon Church was so offended all these Eastern Snobs were-a-laughing at them that they then forbade non-Mormons from seeing the insides of their temples.

This, of course, is rather difficult to research with the current controversies clouding Google's divining water. I thought it would be easy to find but it's not. The history of Mormonism tends to get re-written rather frequently...

Maybe they'll forbid their members from watching South Park!

I did find some interesting links though, and a most excellent sounding recipe for a Thanksgiving custard in a pumpkin:

    Two books to read:

    and
    One Nation Under Gods.
These two will tell you everything you need to know about Mormons, their quest for world domination, and some of the screwball shit they believe.

Maybe we should make it our mission to dress up in dark suits and start knocking on their doors.... you know.... to like tell them that being gay is a good thing, and that they should think about becoming gay too. Oh wait. That would be an invasion of their privacy. Never mind.

While there is enough craziness in just the Christian denominations histories to fill an entire cable channel with juicy titles like "Henry Tudor: Defensor Fedelis & Model Husband," "Calvinist Follies," and "Methodist Meyhymn," each longer than the entire Star Trek catalog, I want people to keep in mind that what has gone wrong here is distinctly a matter of overreaching and suffering the consequences. Facing a pretty obvious cultural trending towards improved civil accommodation for gay and lesbian folks, a lot of harsh father religious folks go for the very same cultural dominance that every one of their histories complains about other people lording it over them instead of marshaling the hugely more effective gentle persuasion that those same histories claim brought in the converts. Jesus is said to have focused some of his snarkiest remarks and fiercest condemnations on people who got pushy that way. That business in Matthew about the final judgment does not make reference to preventing culturally problematical marriages, but it is pretty heavy on feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and visiting the imprisoned.

It does seem to me that the push back on these ill-advised initiatives is exactly the sort of thing that the wise/inspired leaders who supposedly occupy the top positions in these religious fellowships would seek to avoid, quite aside from a little friendly advice from the mere Son of God, so that their diligent flocks might find neutral or even mildly sympathetic cultural space in which to do their good works. Instead, we find them making ill-considered claims that variously suggest that people who disagree with them are hardly even human. It is hardly surprising that the rest of us might consider this more than a little impolite.
  • DuoDog · 1 year ago
This video makes the LDS Church simply look benign and naive. For a more accurate and devastating analysis read John Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven." Excellent story, too, about murderers, who like Joseph Smith, believe God sanctioned their behavior, just like Brigham Young's slaughter of wagon train members who made the mistake of crossing what's now Utah.

I’m a gay South-Park loving ex-Mormon, who plays rugby. The idea of a Parker/Stone penned Broadway musical lampooning Mormons, starring the (very hot) dude who played openly gay rugby hero Mark Bingham in the Flight 93 movie, just sent me into a diabetic coma of delight.
All the threads of my life, coming together at last.
This is why I’m so glad my suicide attempt failed at fourteen. It was worth it just for this.

  • Weltallica · 1 year ago
And don't forget how that episode ended: The Mormon kid saying "This is how I CHOOSE to live my life. If you think less of me, you're entitled to your opinion, but hey, fark you." It was lampooning but DEFENDING the religion. Make no mistake, that's what this musical is. They will be poking fun at the beliefs, but the core message (underlined at the end) will be "Hey, we're not bad people, we just want to practice our beliefs in peace." Understand that. Matt and Trey aren't making this musical to poke fun at Mormons... they're DEFENDING them.
  • Spence · 1 year ago
By humanizing Mormons, making them seem like everyone else, you are taking away the very core of their religion, their arrogant belief in themselves as the chosen people, the only ones with the truth. Mormons aren't bad people, and they aren't going to abandon their beliefs. But the best thing that could happen to them is to show them as human, frailties and all. That right there will disarm them more then anything.

Being from Utah, I can say that Mormons have a huge persecution complex. Everyone is always out to get them. I think Stone and Parker's musical will most likely be hillarious (loved Orgazmo and the South Park Mormon episode) but this will definately throw more gas on the fire. And the more they feel persecuted, the more babies they have. Not good.
  • Annie · 1 year ago
I think that most of you don't even have a clue about what mormons really do believe. I would tell you but you probably wouldn't even listen. Mormons weren't the only people voting agaist and they weren't the only church against it either. You all need to get over yourselves and start seeing how they feel. Here they are, no here i am and my fellow mormons standing up for what we believe in and we are persecuted because of it. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. how would you like it if you were persecuted for what you believe in. we are protecting what we think is right and you are all pathetic. do you want the whole world looking down on you for sticking for what you believe in? do you even know what you believe in? if you believe in hurting and being mean to someone because of what they believe in-that just makes me sick!!!
  • Mark · 1 year ago
So, people who pratice tolerance, and monogamy should be ashamed that they don't think much of racist bigots who have multiple underage wives, and multiple children? Yes, it's true Mormons weren't the only religious group against Prop 8, but they are the only religious group that has absolutely no business in politics. It's not so much they were standing up for their beliefs, as it was a bunch of bigots trying to spite people that are different.
  • BoricuaKC · 1 year ago
    Again, bad facts.

The Multiple underaged wives have nothing to do with the Mormon church - Those are the FLDS not the Mormons.

You stated: "Yes, it's true Mormons weren't the only religious group against Prop 8, but they are the only religious group that has absolutely no business in politics."
Why do you think the Mormons are the ONLY GROUP that have ABSOLUTELY no business in Politics? What gives those that practice Catholicism, Judiasm, Islam, Zoroastrianism etc more rights to be politically involved than Mormons? Is the threat that Mormons are more organized than most?

You do understand that ultimately Obama won because he had a more ORGANIZED campaign, and Prop 8 was passed because those in Favor were as Obama more organized.

If those in against Prop 8 take their focus off the Mormons and focus on repealing Prop 8 - you have a better chance making it happen.

Learn from the real bigotted organizations like the KKK hate gets no one anywhere.
  • ldheung · 1 year ago
Right, you would show us what Mormons "truly" believe ... just like your church's founder "showed" the original "scriptures" to "witnesses" by reading them out of a "hat." Face facts. The Mormons have the dubious distinction of being the most popular fabricated religion in a nation founded on reason.

Are you being persecuted for something you believe in deeply want want to act publicly on? Guess what... that means you're gay and in America. When your church makes up 1/300th of the nation and you fund almost half of Prop 8, it's time you face the scrutiny you deserve. Keep your religion in your own mind and out of everyone else's bedroom.
  • BoricuaKC · 1 year ago
You're hurting your cause by these behavious:

"They've tried noisy protests, consumer boycotts, and the odd act of minor terrorism."

Help me understand something here. How is it possible to think that folks can get support to repeal Prop 8 with acts of violence and terrorism? The Civil rights movemenmt was not won with violence. Those that acted this way were the bigotted southerners and where did that get them in the SAME PLACE THOSE AGAINST PROP 8 ARE NOW!

These SAME ACTS have been done by the KKK, Neo Nazi and other biggotted organization. Is that the kind of people the LGBT communities want to be compared to?!?!?

How do ANY OF you think its OK to threaten peoples lives, lives of children? And then organize folks to support this behaviour?

    Are you angry? Yes
Are you being RATIONAL? HELL NO

Focus your anger in a positice manner because obviously those against Prop 8 were not as organized as all those in favor of Prop 8. So don't blame then THREATEN others because of your lack of organizations.

If it were the LGBT community whose lives AND FAMILIES/ CHILDREN were being threatened and whose homes were being vandalized this country would be losing its mind.

BLAME YOURSELVES for not being properly oganized
SHAME ON YOU for threatening people.
I'm sure the graves of MLK, Ghandi and every Gay martyr is turning right now.

Refocus your anger towards REPEALING PROP 8 and not on the Mormons. You're wasting your time and energy and it will get you exactly where you are now.

  • Than · 1 year ago
Annie's comments only vindicate what I said earlier. As soon as the Mormon church is scrutinized, Mormons claim persecution. You should learn to live with the criticism that comes along with making certain choices. All major religions have to answer to why they do what they do. Crying out that you are being persecuted does not change that one bit. It should be pointed out that the mormons are not the only target of Stone and Parker- they have gone after nearly every major religion. Ultimately, if your religion undertakes some action which is seen as unreasonable by others, you will have to put up with some ridicule. This is something I have to deal with as a Christian. This is something you have to deal with as a Mormon.
  • BoricuaKC · 1 year ago
As a Christian I think you should read what others have said as well. The issue is not about Mormonism and as soon as people get that out of the way you can address the simple fact that everyone is intitled to an opinion. My friends teenagers think its unreasonable to say "Nothing good happens after midnight"; yet they rethink that point when they get in trouble and its 2am.

You may think that passing Prop 8 was unreasonable; well read below since apparently Mormons and Catholics don't make up the 56% majority that passed Prop 8.

What A Long Strange Trip It's Been

    Posted by: John Schroeder at 07:09 am, November 6th 2008;

Proposition 8 is now a part of the California Constitution!

That is probably the best news from an otherwise difficult election for conservatives and Republicans. In very large part, we Evangelicals must thank our Mormon cousins for that fact. They, along with our Catholic brethren, were better organized than us and that provided a base from which we could ALL work together to get this job done. What more, as we have chronicled here, Mormons took the brunt of the abuse, derision, and even threats of physical harm that came with this effort.

And like us, they have given thanks to the Almighty that is ultimately in control, even if their understanding of that Almighty is a bit different than ours. I cannot help but wonder how much more thankful we ALL might be today if we had been more willing to embrace these religious cousins a few months ago - but alas, politics is always about governing today and looking forward to the next election.

    Said John Mark Reynolds:

In the battle for the family, however, traditional Christians have no better friends than the Mormon faithful. It would be wrong if that support were taken for granted. We are intolerant of the false attacks on Mormon faith and family. We stand with our Mormon friends in their right to express their views on the public square. We celebrate the areas, such as family values, where we agree. A heart felt thank you may not win points from other friends who demand one hundred percent agreement from their allies, but it is the decent and proper thing to do.
Thank you to our Mormon friends and allies!

Hard to do better than that. The "Ruth Youth" ministry proclaimed yesterday "International Mormon Appreciation Day." Very appropriate, yet still inadequate. [ www.christiannewswire.com/news/842518567.html ]

In addition to our thanks, Mormons deserve our protection. They have been oppressed in ways during the Prop 8 campaign that this nation has not seen since the 1960's and the civil rights movement. The rhetoric has been deplorable, but moreover, we have seen instances of vandalism, property destruction, and some leaders in the fight currently find themselves with armed protection because of the threats made against them and their families.
Our nation will not and cannot tolerate this sort of behavior - it is incumbent on all of us to stand against it, and the best way to do that is to stand between the Mormons and the forces that would perpetrate such evil.

Now I am sure the Mormons can, and probably want, to take care of themselves, but as a Christian, it is my duty to protect the innocent and free the oppressed. To turn a blind eye in this circumstance is not only ungracious, it is simply un-Christian.

Make all the theological distinctions you want, but in the political arena we are yoked with the Mormons (he said borrowing some religious imagery) and it is darn well time we started acting like it. Absolutely, positively thank the Mormons - but don't stop there. Stand up and be counted against the evil that has been perpetrated towards them in this campaign.

As Christians we can do no less.
