AMERICAblog: St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "Mr. Obama has been presidential;" McCain "became the incredible shrinking man."

"..his own campaign slogan, “County First,” ...

a typo or Freudian slip, either way it's very fitting for the incredible shrinking man.

Wait a tick...are you telling me that the media is actually criticizing a republican politician? When, since around 1980, did they start doing that? They pointed out facts and actually STATED AN OPINION BASED ON THE FACTS!

on MSNBC they are saying John Lewis has made some comments comparing McCain campaign fostering hate and hostility to that of George Wallace....now McCain is mad and calling on Obama to refute Lewis' comments.

and a Repub spokesman just now told Schuster that Ayers should be brought up....oh yeah....well what about Liddy??

Guess they want to talk about anything but the economy.

OH., that is really rich, McCain's campaign has been trashing Obama's personal character for weeks and NOW they want a statement from Obama denouncing John Lewis??

I would tell McCain's camp to take a flying leap. While McCain was trapped (by his own actions) in defending Obama his f**king ads continued to run on TV questioning Obama's character.

Here is the article of McCain crying about being called out over his campaign tactics. Seems like McCain and Palin can dish it out but cry like babies when the tables are turned.

Thanks for the link....they have an update with Obama's reply....

Obama's campaign said he did not agree with the comparison made by Lewis — but did not repudiate the congressman's remarks.

“Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. "But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for President of the United States ‘pals around with terrorists.’

    Wow...good for Barack !!

Good reply. I am really impressed with Obama's campaign. They are respectful, intelligent and tough as nails. Imagine how different our world relations would be with someone that is not a "cowboy" like Bush or pissy as McCain.

The STL Post has been known to lean to the left but not always. Believe it, their endorsement does count for something in Missouri.

Anyone stupid or cynical enough to chose Sarah Palin as a running mate should expect to lose and richly deserves to.

For some odd reason, I still think McCain did not pick Caribou Barbie. Rove has denied her but it just smacks of his tactics to bring out the wingnuts on election day. The whole thing has been a cruel joke on the nation.

Finally, only at this late point do we note that Barack Obama is an African-American. Because of who he is and how he has run his campaign, that fact has become almost incidental to most Americans. Instead, his countrymen are weighing his talents, his values and his beliefs, judging him not by the color of his skin, but the content of his character.

That says something profound and good — about him as a candidate and about us as a nation.

    That's just a great paragraph...

    Washington Monthly:

The McCain/Palin ticket is the first in American history in which both candidates were found to have violated ethics standards before a national election.

It is hard to find a "clean" Republican.

"... the Swedenborgian shipbuilder Arthur Sewall ran as William Jennings Bryan’s No. 2 in 1896."

boy, there's an obscure reference from someone who must be a bigger history/political geek than me!

I think paper endorsements do matter on a local level. The flood of Obama endorsements will be huge. I am looking forward to more! :-)

    Ambinder:

At Rick Warren Saddleback's Church forum, Sen. John McCain cited Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights hero and Georgia Democrat, as the example of a man whose advice he would always seek. Sen. McCain is perhaps rethinking his endorsement today, as Rep. Lewis sides with those who believe that McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin are directly responsible for "sowing the seeds of hatred and division" much like George Wallace.

The truth of the matter is--John McCain pulled the name of John Lewis out of a hat when he made that statement. The immediate response of John Lewis at the time was that McCain has never consulted on him with respect to anything....ever. I think the assessment of Lewis is right on time. You'll note that McCain immediately called for Obama to repudiate the statement, and this allowed the Obama team to respond charging that McCain needs to do the same with respect to his running mate.

This is all good! It might seem harmful, but it opens up a can of worms no one wants to address. Lewis has seen these crowds in his lifetime, and he knows what it can lead up to. Obama has always attacted McCain on issues and policies, never on character. He's on record countless times for saying that he believes McCain has served his country honorably, but that McCain's policies will take us in the wrong direction.

    It's all on record.
