Handing public funded infrastructure over to private hands in the single dumbest thing I have heard of in a long, long time. We, The People already don't have enough money to pay our bills, how are we supposed to pay a road-use fee to some Dubai emir? There are no limited access highways alongside tollways. Either you pay the fee, or you drive at 45 MPH the whole way.
Infrastructure was paid for with US taxpayer's money. Private corporations exist solely to increase their profits. Handing publicly financed infrastructure over to private hands will do only one thing- raise the costs to the users. Even if the state were to sell a highway, they aren't about to demand the actual cost of that highway. No state is about to ask for the replacement cost of said highway. How much money would it cost to build a new Massachussettes tollway? Billions and billions of dollars. How much would it cost New York State to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge? they are NOT about to even ask that much from these rapacious greed-heads. They'll sell these irreplaceable items for one penny on the dollar, get a one-time infusion of cash and then have no further income from them. Meanwhile, We, The People will be forced to pay whatever the company demands, while they break the unions and reduce pay to minimum wage.
This must NOT be allowed to happen!

So what exactly is the proposition here? That a private enterprise will simply absorb the debt and make it vanish? Poof? Or that a private entity will raise prices, cut wages and trim fat that will pay off their investment and turn a tidy profit? If the second, WHY THE FRAKKING FICKKING FUCKWAFFLE FINKLINBERGER FUCK can't Paterson's "government" just do the same thing while turning the profit over to the people of New York???????
A Greek television show has revealed how Greek police posed as anarchists and destroyed property. Inciting violence and blaming it on legitimate activists is a favorite tactic of the state in order to crack down on protest and dismiss genuine grievances.
In October, former Italian President Francesco Cossiga suggested the police be used as agents provocateurs to start riots and then have the police “beat the shit out of the protesters”. Cossiga was one of the founders of Operation Gladio, the CIA and NATO “stay behind army” that engaged in terrorist bombings and assassinations that were subsequently blamed on leftist organizations.
Cossiga is essentially describing the problem-reaction-solution dialectic that he exploited when he was in government. Under the banner of Operation GLADIO, which was unveiled after parliamentary investigations in Italy, Switzerland and Belgium, NATO sponsored secret armies committed acts of violence and terrorism and blamed the attacks on left-wing political movements, allowing far-right governments to seize power in numerous European countries.
The Greek people now have evidence of a similar campaign as they attempt to mobilize against the neoliberal dominated Greek state and its bankster stooges who have brought economic misery to the country. As a matter of course, this vital information will not be brought out in the corporate media as it attempts to discredit peaceful political organizations.

Atlanta, Georgia is one of the largest cities in the United States. Yes because Jews can't suffer and die can they? And a few rocket attacks every day for years is simply the price they pay for living next to people who want to murder them all in their beds. Who could reasonably complain? Hamas are terrorists using the people of Gaza as human shields for their unprovoked attacks on Israel. Seriously I get so sick of liberals non-thinking knee-jerk reaction to bloody everything. Look at any conflict, pick an underdog and hate their opponents. Why is it ONLY Israel that has to give anything up in the middle east? Offer 95% of everything the Palestinians want and it's not enough. Does any grown up actually think that giving them 100% of what they ask for would be enough? (See, it's only Jews who have to negotiate on the principle of giving your opponent EVERYTHING they ask for, no questions asked. For anyone else negotiating means give and take and nobody goes home with everything they asked for. But not the Jews! Oh no! You only take from Jews, right? And if they don't give it all away, you're perfectly justified with killing them aren't you? I mean, they're only Jews, right? It's not like they're people.)
When the Arab and Muslim (and Christian and knee-jerk liberal) world can finally accept that the Jews have a right to their own country, maybe the world will have peace. But that will never happen will it? Because the Jews are always the bad guys. If Hamas (and the thousands of other state sponsored terrorists in the middle east), and the rest would just leave Israel alone, there would be peace. Israel has a right to defend itself with all the force it deems necessary against a worldwide enemy that would like nothing less than to see the Jews eliminated entirely from the face of the earth. As would so many people who post on this site, apparently. (And for G*d's sake, Jews can hardly be allowed to win any battles! That's just against the natural order of things, isn't it? Jews who can fight are just not Kosher.) But, hey, the world is only a better place when we Jews die. So lay on! We'll just lie there and let you murder us as you see fit. You're all such moral exemplars after all. And we're just slimy Jews.

JAJ - to start out with let me make it clear I am in no way an anti-semite, quite the contrary, my daughter is jewish and I have jewish blood in my family (personally I reject all religions as a waste of time, at least for me). However, I deplore and detest the actions of Israelis in Palestine, beginning with the rise of Zionism in the late 19th century. I won't go into much detail but address a couple of your statements, in a civil way if I can.
Why do you think there are rocket attacks? Oh, I know. Because Hamas wants all Jews dead, they just hate jews so much they just want to slaughter them all. This of course is bulls*h*i*t. They are retaliating for decades of suppression and repression and slaughter. When I hear jews say "there is no compromising position (enter religion)" I discard it, same with Hamas or any other Palestinian group. What has happened in the Gaza strip in the last year is nothing short of terrorism. The Israelis have 10,000+ prisoners in their dungeons and the Palestinians have, what, 1? Thousands of innocent Palestinians have been murdered by the jews in Israel compared to a few hundred jews.
Leave Israel alone? What hogwash. How about leaving the damn Palestinians alone and quit exploiting them as cheap labor. Israel better get its s*h*i*t together or war will never cease. How about Lebanon last year? Using internationally band cluster bombs to slaughter innocent women and children, civilians, destruction of infrastructure, etc. Let me tell you something Mr. Just Another Jew. Nobody is buying your bulls*h*i*t any more. Start treating the Palestinians like humans and you just might find a peaceful outcome. I'm about sick of it all but I expect it won't be resolved in my lifetime. The majority of the world considers Israel a terrorist nation. They have the record to prove it.

This is all about short term benefit and a few million towards the deficit. In fact the real issue is that the Federal Government has not turned over its revenue to the states. It has instead spent trillions on a war and trillions more to socialize the richest people in the world. The highways, dams, power plants, etc have all been built at taxpayer expense. Since we paid for the power plants why do we have to pay such high costs. To pay to drive on a highway I already paid to build is insanity but the right wing of this country wants to privatize anything that is not nailed down. Social Security, Healthcare, name one privatized program which has worked? Not a one. Blackwater, Haliburton have done such a good job feeding our troops in Iraq, getting them safe drinking water, so what if it has a little mercury or e coli or a little lead. Like the troops that have died from electrocution in the showers in Iraq. Governments are in place to provide security and basic services. If they can't or won't do these functions then frankly we don't need any level of government. Local, town, county, state or federal they provide no benefit to the population who elect them.

in the mid 1980s, my former employer provided our division a class called "Improving your Potential"...It was by a man named Tice.. can't remeber his first name... He was an industrial psychologist... . it was designed to help us through the downsizing of our company by improving our job seeking opportunities through understanding the direction our country was taking.. In the class we were told that in the new century, minorities would gain more influence as well as woman, religion would be more dividing than race and that America was going to become a vacation destination for the worlds rich and famous... this was the timeframe that the term "imformation age" was coined...
If the USA is going to become a destination point for the world's rich, where are we the poor to middle class going to end up? What's our fate slated to be... One thing I learned in Corporate America was that people are expendable... When revenue shortcomings were projected, payroll budgets were slashed...
In this new paradigm we live in where the corporations are the new government and the media is there to serve the corporations, if people are still expendable, and the boomers are getting ready to begin drawing on social service programs at a time when our country has been bankrupted, whats the fate of the boomers going to be?

Chicago has been at the forefront of the privatization of government assets and sources of revenue.
The Chicago Skyway is already leased for 99 years. Midway Airport is now leased for 75 years. Parking meters, too. And public education is being sold to the lowest bidders.
Chicago politicians recently voted to privatize on-street parking in the city. The cost to park on public streets is expected to rise to at least $6.50/hr quite quickly. The corporations leasing these parking spaces will also be involved in ticketing violating vehicles.
All these deals bring in a little cash for the city in the short term. But none of these deals enables Chicago to deal with its long term liabilities. The city is mortgaging its financial future in an attempt to balance its budget today. It's downright criminal.
If there is so much money to be made operating the Skyway, Midway Airport, and parking meters - why doesn't the city do so and collect all that money itself instead of handing it over to already wealthy corporate interests?
Keep an eye on Arne Duncan as secretary of education. During his relatively brief tenure Chicago privatized nearly 15% of public schools. 50% of public schools will be privatized within 8 years. (Student access to those privatized public schools is closely regulated and restricted.) Education is the 2nd largest industry in America after the military; corporations are drooling over the prospects of having it turned over to them.
This is all part of a massive assault on public services that will continue unabated, and probably even be encouraged, during the Obama years.

Whether a break apart is likely or not, there is no doubt that this country is teetering and selling our infastructure is only one cause of it.

As fooled by him as I feel, I still hold hope that Obama is not the tool I fear him to be.
We need to let them know in no uncertain terms that if they don't want their charge, they can get the hell out of the office and let us elect someone that does.
INSTEAD of privatizing infrastructure, and you know...things worth a damn, why not privatize the goddamned politicians?
Lining their pockets at our expense and selling us out could easily be done from India, or some other place at a fraction of the cost.
Or replace them with "Magic 8 balls" and a list of questions.
These boneheads are worthless to US the TAXPAYERS.
