Oh, Geez. If our country has become this stupid, then OK. Elect McCain, nuke the Middle East, bring it all down. It's time. The whole world except for me has become nucking futs.

Of course it happened in Florida.
And Hillary really thinks she'd win there?
Hell, they'd probably burn her at the stake.

Off topic but speaking of stupid-flipped stations and listened to Michael "Savage" Weiner say that he and his followers had gotten the Dubai port deal dropped. BillO's got his causes and so does Rush- Lil Weiner needs one, too. LOL and then puke

It's called hoodoo in Florida and bubbles right up out of the swamps. Pasco is no exception. A real for sure fundamentalist would know that. I bet the fancy wizardry talk came from some one out of state, that sounds like the way they talk up north in Georgia . . . or Connecticut where that LIeberman person lives.

FOX AND DOOFUS
Fox host uses son to attack Obama A Fox News host is now inviting his son on his show to attack Democratic presidential candidates. Peter Doocy received praise from his father, Steve Doocy, host of Fox & Friends when his son asked push-poll style questions aimed at Barack Obama.
“Morning to you, Pops!” said Peter Doocy, after his father introduced his son to his television audience to replay a series of push-poll questions Peter asked a group of students he had gathered at Villanova University campus in Radnor, Pennsylvania for a ‘youth view’ of the Democratic presidential race.
The 20-year-old Peter Doocy started out the session by asking benign questions; how many students had registered – most of them – and how many actually voted in the recent primary – only a few hands went up; how many would vote the same way their parents did or how many wouldn’t; and then got down to the real red meat of attacking Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama:
“His slog is change we can believe in. This is a guy who could not change churches when his preacher was saying the United States deserved 9/11 and the US government created AIDS. So, what makes you think that he is going to bring about this kind of change?”

I think it might have to do with the fact you have to register to comment now. No more anonymous posts or posts under assumed handles. Some people are less likely to speak out if they know that they will be held accountable for their speech. Much of the reduced volume of comments is stuff that want be missed.

You know, is it really too late to give Florida back to Spain or something? I am really getting tired of the idiots from that state messing up the Human Gene pool.

Don't blame Florida for this. Remember, Florida gets all the retirees from the other states and all their offspring come following them down. It didn't use to be so bad here, but all the dumb Nixon and Reagan-loving yuppies have been retiring in droves within the last 10 years. So blame all the other 49 states for not taking care of their morons before they could escape - don't blame Florida (well you can...but what's the point since none of the leaders in the state seem to care what their former bretheren in the other states think).

The tactic appears to be if you can't teach the bible in school you can't teach anything else. The more our educational system is dumbed down the stronger the pitch from the churches. I am sure there are religious zealots that are against algebra because it measures the "Unknown" and was developed by Muslims.

I've only been flitting occassionally since January to check out the old stomping grounds. I was amazed how much the blog had changed. Lots of inifighting, etc between the Hillary/Obama camps. That was getting so tired. But now this new commenting policy seems sort of stifleing. I hope people come back in droves soon. This used to be one of my favorite blogs a few years back. It was filled with life, arguments and lots of links.
Here's to hoping the conversation will starty a flying once again..fingers crossed.

butta_fly, SociologistTina asked where everyone had gone a few threads down. Part of the decline in commenters may be due to DisQus (I doubt that) but a more realistic reason for the substantial decline can be laid squarely in the hands of a small group of people who took over the comment threads, tried to always drive the focus of comments and ran to John with their emails of complaint when they couldn't take their own advice they so willingly gave others: "ignore the trolls." I suppose they achieved what was always their goal: ruin the blog and comments for everyone else. What they failed to foresee was that after they drove away many of the more interesting commenters, they themselves would get bored and disappear as well.
Have hope! People will come back once they realize the comment nazis have moved on.

Make no mistake about this. Piculas' dismissal has nothing to do with the offended student. It has everything to do with the district administration. More and more idiots and hall monitors have replaced intelligent humans in America's school systems. That is one of the main reasons I left public education after receiving a PhD. I would no longer subject myself to the absolute and profoundly moronic dictates of increasing numbers of stupid school administrators. Stupid, rigid and dictatorial. I imagine the students will miss Mr. Piculas. But Mr. Piculas won't miss the schools. Most likely, he will go on to thrive and do well. Too many years in the Pasco County School District will warp the best and most creative of minds. I wish him well.

As a teacher who teaches at an international school and is not an American (but understands the profound influence of America on all of our lives regardless of nationality) I have to say...WTF! Wizadry??? I suggest they are dragged to the town square and then forced to walk on water, if they can...clearly they are Christian and God fearing thus being permitted to return to substitute teaching and if they cannot and sink, they should be burned at the cross.....oh wait, that was done before in the 1400s!!

Good grief! While I may be someone who tries to respect other people's beliefs and who doesn't think that religion is automatically a sign of a lack of intelligence, I'm also very much of the opinion that there's a vast difference between rational faith and mindless dogma. Firing a teacher over a harmless sleight-of-hand carnival trick most firmly belongs in the latter category.
Perhaps Mr. Piculas might want to consider moving to a town which is living in the 21st Century rather than the 17th?

Ricky, that sounds like a pretty good explanation. After watching the comments sections for a few months I left for awhile. I pretty much came up with the same conclusion.

What a turn of events for a country which, after "The Wizard of Oz" was released in 1939! Everyone has been singing "I'm off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz" ever since...
Obviously, the state of Florida has been overtaken by medieval minds with no sense of humor, no appreciation of sleight of hand. Remember, this is a state that REQUIRES the teaching of creationism alongside real science.

While on the surface, this all seems stupid and comical, there did appear to be actual reasons for firing this guy according to the article. In my heart of hearts I would like to believe it was the fact that he got a parent complaint (regardless of the stupidity of the complaint) on top of the other things. He is a substitute teacher...they are a dime a dozen. Before anyone comes down on me, my wife is a sub and I know that the district she works for doesnt put up with any garbage. If she had done the things the article had stated, wizardry excluded LOL, then Im sure she might not be asked back the next year. Just my .02

And only Florida would allow a discriminatory development like this to proceed:
*Conservative Christians everywhere tremble, grab their kids and usher them inside for another homeschool lesson on creationism, thanking the Lord that they never allowed their kids to be exposed to such demonic things as public school, television, or...thinking.*
(Sorry. Revisited my childhood and watched "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" recently. If this teacher is bad, I guess Angela Lansbury is the modern earthly incarnation of Satan himself. Do religious nuts watch "Murder She Wrote?" Has the boycott begun yet? No? When does the witch-burning begin?)

This is crazy. Did you read the comments from people on that news website. The crazy people that pretend to be Christians are trying to defend the actions and everyone that is against it as being Anti-Christian.
You folks do not own the religion, deal with it. Your little wooden church in a corn field by an unordained, uneducated, pretend minister does not count. You are going to hell. Just because the minister yells and screams hatred to make up for his lack of qualifications does not make him qualified. This is not a issue of Christian vs. unChristian. It is an issue of educated people vs. those that were denied admission to college or failed high school. Why is that uneducated people seem to be getting into positions they are unqualified for?
