Sadly, this is nothing but more propaganda. The Olympics are nothing more than the worst of vile crass commercialism. Nothing really matters except for the money, money, money generated. That they even eliminated the rules against professional athletes competing demonstrates how important the commercialism is. The vast amount of tourism generates so much money that no one wants to stop the Olympics. A really gross example of how bad the commercialism is occurred when Mark Spitz won all the gold medals in swimming. Look how bitter, nasty and hateful the corporations were when he turned out to be too wooden to be a viable commercial spokesman for them. I'm surrprised they didn't prosecute him and carry out capital punishment.

Another very gross example of how nothing counts but the money is when the Israeli athletes were massacred back in the 70s. OUt of respect for the slain athletes, they should have canceled those Olympics, but no, the only they respect is money. This year with the massive, massive human rights abuses committed by China is very vile violation of the bullshit that they call the Olympics spirit. Also notice that the massive, massive nationalism demonstrated by every nation is another violation of the Olympics spirit, actually the exact opposite of what the Olympics is supposed to be.

I notice that the decision was made by team captains, rather than "officials", and announced after Cheek was kicked out.

What an inspiring act of solidarity and courage.

And -- should anyone try to smear this as politicizing the games -- by permitting China to continue to censor dissent or intimidate objectors one colludes with China's politicizing the games.

I view things differently from the poster below. Possibly because I was hoping to be an olympian one day. First is the 1970's, why should athletes who trained their whole lives have to give up their dreams because of some asshole terrorists? Contrary to your belief, most if not all athletes do this because they love to compete. Sure companies make money, but for most of them, this is the one chance they get to show how hard they worked to their countrymen. Lopez is a great guy and if you were in the track community you would know how awesome a guy he was and why the other athletes voted for him to bear the flag. He frakkin was able to escape his country for a better life and trained hard to make these games. You probably don't understand the life of a distance runner, but as someone who pushed their life to the side, swearing off alcohol and parties and going to bed when my friends were going out to try to grasp that Olympic dream and make myself a better athlete, i take deep offense to your comments. These are people that i personally know have taken the same road I did. It's a long lonely one, even more so for a kid from Sudan. The link below is a video of him discussing escaping from Sudan to reach America to run. It's quite shocking. This is what the olympics means to me. Not your definition of commercialism.

It's a symbolic sop to the masses and it worked! Lesson learned.
