I got Fios fiber optic here in Tampa over a year ago. My speed is similar, actually just a bit better, than John's. I got the phone, internet, TV, cell package and my total bill went down considerably.
There were quite a few bugs in the Fios system at first but they seem to have worked them all out.

Just checked my connection, it sucks. Rather depressing.
But the important thing I want to relate is the story by Glenn Greenwald over at Salon. It is and important analysis of the anthrax scare and recent suicide of the purported scientist behind it and how ABC News with Brian Ross may be less that forthcoming about their journalistic practices in how they handled sources after the anthrax attacks. It is a riveting read and something that I believe will have legs. Glenn writes quite well and persuasively and I could not stop reading it. Do yourself a favor and check it out. I would be curious what John and the gang here have to say about the whole ordeal. It is going to be big, IMHO. http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/...
Rather frightening stuff.

Very frightening. Did you hear that his former "therapist" who took out a restraining order on him has related that he had "homicidal ideation" (I believe she said or homicidal tendencies) since college? When did he see this woman? The man was 62 and had probably not been in college for almost 40 years. Could her allegations be cooked? The man is hardly cold, and here she comes...wait, here's the WSJ on that.
Appreciate the additional links. I have a lot of questions, to start: who the hell was this "therapist," what was her training (no degree noted on her signature), how long had she been seeing him, how did he get to her (by himself or as an EAP referral, i.e. the government) and was she working for the "client" or the government. She was subpoenaed to testify on 8/1 and he "suicides" on the 29th. Coincidence? If he was this dangerous to himself or others, why was he admitted on a voluntary and allowed to leave. Did they hope he would suicide so he wouldn't be around to give any embarrassing details? This smells worse and worse by the minute. Congressional investigation essential!

This prob happens off and on for no apparent reason. Between times, they play fine.
I have 2-g memory, 80% free. I just read that the stop-start vid play is probably a Norton prob, but pausing play until the bar fills will prevent the interruptions. I tried that and it works!

FIOS is great, but you do pay extra for the high bandwidth service. I went with the standard bandwidth - it is usually faster than the servers I connect to. When I changed from TW Cable, I was able to get phone, cable, and Internet for what I was paying for cable and Internet. The quality of the Verizon service is much better, as they aren't saddled with all of the old Adelphia equipment.

After reading this, and checking my speeds (5,842 download, 491 upload) I called my cable company and upgraded (now speeds are 10,000 download, and 1,000 upload) and my overall cable bill (Internet and cable tv) increased by 9 bucks. AND it included my finally upgrading to DVR boxes so I can now join the 21st century in television watching. I was surprised it was not that expensive to double the speeds and upgrade. Bootlegging someone else's router signal from a house near me. They are rated as a 6mb dsl/cable. Your service sez my download is around 22~~mbps and myspeedpc Lite sez 46~~mbps. So who should I believe? I had 6mbps cable about 6 months ago and got about the same readings. So, I should complain for FREE? It's all about how you set up your cable modem or wireless card. Some might benefit from trying TCP Optimizer from SpeedGuide.net. It may be a little 'geeky' for some, but then there's always time to learn and experiment. I'm happy as can be with what I get since my first box was dial-up at 34kbps and I had it tweaked to pull the net in like it was 56k....

Thanks Freemark - I thought it was the speedtest. I just saw that the sites I like to visit are all back on line.
Their service was so shoddy in terms of reliability at my old place, in addition to them accidentally cutting off service 2 weeks before I moved and then deleting me from their customer database despite being an 8-year paying customer, that it resulted in my getting the introductory price for the next year when I moved to Brooklyn.
I also don't pay for TV, as I get all the broadcast HD channels for free through the cable (all cable companies are legally required to provide them for free), and that's good enough for me. I also have NetFlix for cable TV series and movies for $18/month.
Add in my cell service for $65, and I'm paying $108/month for internet/tv/phone. Not too horrible, but yes our broadband availability, pricing, and speeds are falling far short of Europe and Asia. This has been a problem for years, and likely will not be solved any time soon due to the immense power telecom companies hold over our government.

DocApple

It's like John mentioned above. Uploading is less frequently used for bandwidth-intensive activity (sending e-mail, posting blog entries, online transactions, etc.). The only things that really stress uploading are some games, file-sharing, and posting large files like videos to YouTube. There's less incentive for the ISPs to maintain high upload speeds, and there's also only so much total physical capacity over the lines supplying the bandwidth.
A cynical person would also argue that better upload speeds would make things like file-sharing, user-created videos, and whatnot work too easily (imagine what it would be like if everyone had 10x the upload speed when sharing files, or posting a 30 min user-created TV show to YouTube only took a few minutes).

Sorry, I cheat a bit: My condo is fully CAT5 wired, and our HOA set up a T1/aDSLs connection with an industrial provider that all residents share. We each pay less than $15/mo.
There are some issues with this approach. We have to encourage VoIP users to buy their own dedicated bandwidth, and heavy downloaders as well, like P2P users. But for normal stuff, you can't beat it.

A cynical person would also argue that better upload speeds would make things like file-sharing, user-created videos, and whatnot work too easily (imagine what it would be like if everyone had 10x the upload speed when sharing files, or posting a 30 min user-created TV show to YouTube only took a few minutes).
Download Speed: 13643 kbps (1705.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1602 kbps (200.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Sorry, I cheat a bit: My condo is fully CAT5 wired, and our HOA set up a T1/aDSLs connection with an industrial provider that all residents share. We each pay less than $15/mo.
There are some issues with this approach. We have to encourage VoIP users to buy their own dedicated bandwidth, and heavy downloaders as well, like P2P users. But for normal stuff, you can't beat it.
