AMERICAblog: That private jet gimmick: She "put it on eBay." She didn't sell it on eBay.

will she put Cindy McCain's private jet on Ebay? What about any one of McCain's 12 homes?

    Just wondering.

From April, "McCain's Answer for Poverty? eBay!"

In Martin County, Kentucky this week, John McCain added another one his "Forgotten Places" to the growing list of places his campaign would now like to forget. With a straight face, McCain told the residents of the economically devastated region that eBay represents their economic future. And he did so by appropriating the words of Meg Whitman, who just happens to be not only McCain's national campaign co-chair, but the former CEO of eBay.

As NPR reported this morning, McCain took pains to deride President Johnson's "Great Society" and subsequent action by the federal government to alleviate poverty. Donning his compassionate conservative hat, McCain told an audience in Inez, Kentucky, "You have a right to expect us to show as much concern for helping you create more and better choices to make for yourselves as we show any other community in America." And one of those better choices, according to John McCain, is to become a seller on the auction site, eBay:

"Today, for example, 1.3 million people in the world make a living off eBay, most of those are in the United State of America."

Ebay's Whitman couldn't have put it better herself. In fact, she put it almost exactly the same on way on CBS 60 Minutes in March. As she told Lesley Stahl:

"We have about - around the world, about 1.3 million people make most, if not all, of their living selling on eBay."

Cheney said this same shit, too. If people need money, they can just sell their stuff on ebay. If people need health care, they can just go to an emergency room.

She'll put America's honor on Ebay next.....wait a minute....the shrub already did that.....

No takers, after 8 years, with a "teaser" start bid of 0.99. Buy-It-Now Price: $24.99.

McCain stated on the trail this morning that not only did she put the plane on E-Bay, she sold it on E-Bay for a profit??? Her comments in the same appearance were exactly the ones used in her speech Wednes. Guess she can't think of anything to say on her own.
  • nicho · 1 year ago
You don't sell private jets on eBay. You sell them through brokers. This isn't a used guitar we're talking about.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
You can sell a plane on ebay.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
People sell multi million dollar items on eBay quite often, planes, land, homes, yachts, cars, expensive jewelry.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Actually you can sell planes, cars, homes and even Islands on eBay, it's done all of the time.

    Crazy? YES!
  • Cpeterka · 1 year ago
Finally sold by a private dealer to a 'business man from Valdez" for 1/2 a million less than what it cost the state.

    Joe

You need to add that today John McCain, in Cederburg WI, said she sold it on ebay AND "she "sold it at a profit"

I screwed up the figures in earlier posts BUT if the plane costs 2.7 million and sold for 2.1 million, how is that a profit?
    McCain-onomics
  • alaskan · 1 year ago
She did not sell it on EBay. She lost 500,000 on it
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Actually, if the plane actually did cost $2.7 million as I have heard claimed and they sold it for $2.1 million, then
they LOST $600,000 on the sale. That is hardly a profit as they claimed. PLUS there were listing fees on eBay and for an item that expensive, they would be VERY STEEP.

Might I even suggest they LIED.

Has anybody been able to find a record on eBay of this auction? What I'd like to know is what was paid for auction fees, which you have to pay based on selling price (or reserve price) and I would assume would be pretty steep for an item of that value!

  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
The plane NEVER sold when it was on eBay, they had to give it to an aircraft broker who finally sold it for $2.1 million.

Aquarius's numbers on the plane are correct and here are 2 sources:

  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Don't forget, it also COSTS money to put it on eBay, even if it DOESN'T sell...
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Right AND at a selling price of $2.5 million, you can bet that those fees were STEEP!
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
Not if there's a reserve. She said there was a reserve.
  • cephas · 1 year ago
My point is, even if you DON'T sell an item on eBay, you still have to pay a percentage of the selling price or reserve price to eBay for listing fees. So, I would imagine a large amount of money went to eBay for the auction even though it didn't sell on eBay. I'd love to know how much that cost!!! Talk about wasteful spending.

Here's one more source on the sale for anyone who cares about McCain & Palin's lies:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/25/us/25jet.html...
    .
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
As a seller on eBay myself, I can say that you are absolutely correct about eBay's fees and for an item this expensive it must have cost a FORTUNE to list it.

I could find out how much that would cost, but I'm not sure I have that kind of time. Actually anyone could figure it out if you go to http:www.ebay.com

Just go to the sellers section and see what they say are the costs for the LISTING FEE for an item selling for $2.5 Million. That is the name of the charges that would apply to that sale.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
    It wouldn't be 20%
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I'm sure it's nothing like that. Once an item is priced over a certain amount (not sure what it is) I believe they have flat rates for listings. Remember, it's to Ebay's benefit to actually have them SELL the item as once sold, eBay gets a FINAL VALUE FEE and that is really these days.

So whatever the amount is, on an item that expensive, the fees still would be VERY high.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
It sure as Hell wouldn't have been $500,000!

Post modern pols have no qualms about grabbing anything and twisting it anyway to bluster their way through any pesky Q&A.
Twisting Palin's viewers into supporters, HRC's primary voters into diehards, taxing the top 1% into massive crippling middle class taxes, occupation into war and into the chimera of single front victory...It's so easy a Rethuglican could do it!

nah... has to be more like 3months... too soon after Trig for Bristol to be preggers again.

    I'm sure it's nothing.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Joe,
She IS crafty with her words, BUT they still lied about making a profit on the plane!

The plane cost $2.7 million, they listed in on eBay for $2.5 million and it didn't sell. So they gave it to an aircraft broker who sold it for $2.1 million.

They did finally SELL the plane however NO PROFIT WAS MADE as they claimed.

    Oprah:

OPRAH'S STATEMENT: "The item in today's Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Oh, the Right is in a frenzy over this Oprah story. They are the ones who have been flooding her website with emails telling her to have Palin on. I'm with Oprah on this one, sure Palin would be a great interview, but she has not had Obama on since he began running for President. All of her support has been for him as Private Citizen. You go Oprah! Don't back down to the crazy fringe Right.

    Ben Smith at Politico:

But McCain, retelling the story, misstated it today:

"You know what i enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- made a profit," he said, introducing Palin.

Well, no. And the state sold it at a loss of half a million dollars.

    MISS CONGENIALITY?

Was Sarah Palin actually Miss Congeniality in the Miss Wasilla contest? Another woman, Amy Gwin of University City Missouri says that she was awarded that title. (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/columnist...)

This is a minor point, and I don't know who is telling the truth. But why are so many details about Sarah Palin so fuzzy? It's absurd that the facts about someone who's running for VP for the US is so flimsy,

By the way, the woman who claims that she was Miss Congeniality sounds like a very reputable person with nothing to gain from any notoriety. She was featured in another article - a very poignant one - about the challenges of having an autistic daughter.

Oh Lord, here we go again. So many wingnuts say that eBay is a faaaaabulous way to earn a vast second or third income. (Or even a first.) I buy a LOT of stuff from eBay, and it pains me to see how much work it takes to list items, keep track of, package, do the moneywork, and ship the items for the little money sold for vast majority of the stuff sold there--books, small household items, etc. The exception is for a seller who has carved out a niche selling expensive things, and/or a person with an existing business who sells on eBay as a sideline rather than rent or expand office space. In fact, I've even paid more for an item--for example, a dog-eared paperback nonfiction book, one time, at which I was the top bidder at five cents, because I harbored a grudge against the author (actually, thanks to me, the co-author), who'd gotten a great deal of work out of me without credit or a share of sales. I told the seller why I was paying her five bucks extra; I didn't want to make HER do all that work and get shafted because of my malevolence. She responded that she'd gladly refund the fiver if I asked, but she was trying to support her children as a single mom. I saw no reason to doubt her.

So, make a fortune off eBay? Suuuuuure. Just ask Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay. Not how she made her bundle, no?
  • FatRat · 1 year ago
Three jets and very little reality.

Romney accused Gore of owning a jet, at the RNC.
McCain's wife bought John a jet. It's nice to be a millionaire.
Palain took a financial drubbing, when she sold the Ebay jet.

Reality is not exactly kind to the Republicans; but they aren't part of the reality based community. The Republicans are lucky that the that the 4th estate is dead.
