i heard rush limpballs today exhorting McCain to blame the financial crisis on the dems/Obama...that's mild stuff compared to what we'll probably hear again...the problem is, they've got nothing real and they've got nothing new...it's all re-hashed BS.

    McCain's Kremlin Ties
...despite McCain's tough talk, behind the scenes his top advisers have cultivated deep ties with Russia's oligarchy--indeed, they have promoted the Kremlin's geopolitical and economic interests, as well as some of its most unsavory business figures, through greedy cynicism and geopolitical stupor. The most notable example is the tale of how McCain and his campaign manager, Rick Davis, advanced what became a key victory for the Kremlin: gaining control over the small but strategically important country of Montenegro.

According to two former senior US diplomats who served in the Balkans, Davis and his lobbying firm, Davis Manafort, received several million dollars to help run Montenegro's independence referendum campaign of 2006. The terms of the agreement were never disclosed to the public, but top Montenegrin officials told the US diplomats that Davis's work was underwritten by powerful Russian business interests connected to the Kremlin and operating in Montenegro. Neither Davis nor the McCain campaign responded to repeated requests for comment. (Davis's extensive lobbying work, especially on behalf of collapsed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has already attracted critical media scrutiny.)

But, but...what about Georgia?! I thought we were all Georgians now, and Russia was a big bully? Bwahahah! Apparently the McCain camp is playing on both sides of the fence!

Will the House repubs will still vote no?

Word has it AT&T is having some serious credit problems.

I don't think people are going to buy it this time.....the country is in a crisis right now....and Obama has proven himself in the debate.......people want answers ...and all the GOP has is more games.

Mitch McConnell has been running vicious attack spots and shameless uber self-promoting schmaltz for a while now here in Kentucky.
So far, I've not noticed one spot for the Dem in my congressional district or one spot for Mitch's opponant Bruce Lundford.

If you have a blog, I urge you to check your stats. I've been getting A LOT of hits on variations of "Obama sworn in to senate on koran" -- I blogged about his race for the Senate 4 years ago and when he was sworn in, I put up all the videos and cute pix of his kids, etc. Was so proud of him. Many of these hits seem to come from swing states and the south. Have modified my original posting to point to factcheck.org and to point out that Dick Cheney was standing right there when he was sworn in and could verify that Obama used a family bible. It doesn't matter at all to me, but the way the GOP lies about anything and everything is hideous.

A lot of people out there don't know what to think or who to believe. They've always thought they could trust the people and party they voted for (ie., McCain is "honorable"). Maybe so, but he's surrounding himself with the scum of the earth.
I don't want another 4 years of scum. 8 is enough.

One of the many improvements needed for our elections: no political ads 2 weeks out. no campaigning 1 week out, just answering press questions..
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
Everybody expects them to throw everything, including the kitchen sink, at Obama at this point. But I think we have many tuned in voters at this point and those attempts to change the subject will be transparent to those who have seen such tactics in the past (e.g. gay issues, abortion, etc.). It seems many people have seen through the McCain attempts of late rise above partisan politics - only to dig deeper into them. This late in an election cycle many voters realize that the campaign behind attacks out of desparation and discredits those efforts. I thiink voters are so tuned into the economy right now, they may just blow off Wright references.

So....do Americans become patriots now? And stop being political?

    No? Yes?

    When?

    WOW!

Check out Senator Bernie Sanders proposal in the Senate tonight. His explanation of how we got in this mess, and how it makes sense to have a "surtax" on the wealthiest one-percent makes perfect sense.

    Wow, Bernie for President!

    NY Times:

    Ads Go on the Attack

Just before Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, four independent groups have been trying to seed public opinion by running advertisements that are critical of Gov. Sarah Palin and Senator John McCain.

Campaign Money Watch, a watchdog group, produced a spot focusing on Mr. McCain’s involvement in the Keating Five scandal,

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is behind a graphic 60-second advertisement attacking Ms. Palin’s stance on the aerial hunting of wolves.

Planned Parenthood has produced a 30-second spot focusing on Ms. Palin’s tenure as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

Perhaps the harshest of the advertisements is a 30-second spot produced by the 85,000-member California Nurses Association and running in closely contested states. It is a full-fledged swipe at Mr. McCain’s age and health, and a direct attack on Ms. Palin’s readiness to take over as president if necessary.

    Good !!!
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
the nurses' ad is pretty vile. it actually comes across as callous. i hope the obama campaign disavows it.
  • vwcat · 1 year ago
As long as the economy is tanking and we are having serious problems the media is more focused on that the smear stuff. They are the ones that make or break the smears. they are the ones that report it and talk about it. But, if they are preoccupied with real issues they ignore it.
that is what will make a difference.
  • Wild_Weasel · 1 year ago
Wow, here's the full text of the speech Senator Bernie Sanders gave tonight regarding the Wall Street bailout. Great specifics, history, and context.

He proposes a modest surtax on the wealthiest one percent of Americans.

    http://www.sanders.senate.gov/news/record.cfm?i...
  • Kansaskitty · 1 year ago
Yes, Bernie gave a great speech. I totally agree with him, and had signed his petition. He was offering that proposal as an amendment, but I didn't see what happened to his amendment. I presume it didn't pass.

Odd, isn't it, that Bernie Sanders, a socialist independent, and Jeff Sessions(R-Wingnut) both vote no? Who'd a thunk it?! The far left and far right go full circle and meet again in agreement. Strange happenings here lately....

The republicans halfway got their golden parachute c/o the Senate Jellyfish. They can take expensive vacations for the next four years, subsidize their surrogates to attack everything president Obama does, then come back and launch another wave of PNAC.

$700 billion will buy an awful lot of allegiance...
  • donotmakemecomedownthere · 1 year ago
The GOP have added nothing new to the slander campaign Obama already withstood from the Clintons during the primaries. Nothing new. Same old.
  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
The irony is, the McCain campaign would probably do better were they to NOT continually hit Obama. People are looking for a reason to vote for the GOP; they're NOT looking for a reason to NOT vote Dem. They want hope, the GOP gives them fear. It's all they know how to do anymore.

Way to Go Senator Bernie Sanders:

  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
Stop with the fear, panic, and worry. Dems need to stop worrying about the GOP and emulate them. Instead of worrying about an October surprise, surprise them. Find one of the groups that currently is putting out attack ads against McCain and send them a check.

The reason the GOP won in the past isn't that hard to see. They took every strength the Democrats had and beat us over the head with it. Return the friggin favor. Time to stop playing cautious and start swinging for the walls.
  • TXfemmom · 1 year ago
They will hit with all kinds of ugly things. Some 527 needs to start publishing and putting McCain's statements made for propaganda for the N. Vietnames on ads if they get too far out of line.

What the DEMS really need is to put a hundred thousand volunteers into every voter's registration office in the country, but especially in crucial states, and keep them there recording everything that goes on, overseeing every move that is made, accompanying every voting machine and ballot box, once again on video through the remainder of the time leading up to the election, and throughout the election and vote counting, and stay with the stuff continuously until any recount is done, and Obama is declared the winner.
  • shrrrr · 1 year ago
    whoops. severe edit.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
The Republicans need to be careful about Rev. Wright. They may do some sort of "Willie Horton" ads in very targeted markets, and most likely some "push polling" in very selected markets. I wouldn't worry about the tripe they will unleashed as much as the methods, and the buy time they used for their campaigns. The Obama campaign and the Media will be on the case, but the Media may get timid or kind of confuse much like with the Swiftboating of Kerry.

I see more voter intimidation in African American and Latino communities, and some sleazy mass mailings.
  • blueoysterjoe · 1 year ago
I was thinking a couple days ago that the McCainiacs were going to wait until the last week, and then try to scare the White People with a last minute barrage of Big Scary Black Man stories. I thought they would wait, because If they pull this crap too early, it will get neutralized in the five weeks before the election, neutralized by boredom with the issue if not outrage.

But I dunno ... they may think they have no choice but to blow their wad now and hope for the best.
  • benb · 1 year ago
McCain is sinking in the polls so I certainly hope that, in regards to his current strategy, he works even harder at what he's doing.
  • petefitSD · 1 year ago
what is interesting is how some of the american taliban (evangelicals) seem to believe that obama is a muslim b/c he attended a school years and years ago

it occurred to me that by the same token that the argument could be made that McCain was brainwashed by the north vietnamese while held captive for five years and that once he takes office that he will take us the rest of the way to the socialism that is being started with the economic bailout...
think about it, it makes just as much sense as obama being a muslim

while I disagree with many tenets of the sharia (to be fair I disagree with many tenets of evangelical christian beliefs as well) please keep in mind that muslim tradition bans the charging of interest when lending money...again--true tenets of islam do not allow usury-the practice of charging interest
given the fact that we are a nation leveraged on credit with the uberclasses getting extremely wealty off of charging the working class 20% to 50% (payday loans, anyone?) it might not be a bad idea to implement such a law

Living as I do in Marsha Blackburn's TN-7 district about 5 miles from MS-1 with associates from my military service all over the south I suggest that the ability for these tactics have the effect one would consider "normal" is severely hampered this cycle.
We have seen the recent election in MS-1 and the closing in the polls in senate races in Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi & Texas reflect the ability of negative campaigning in these most receptive of areas. Heck, a recent effort by McConnell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsAiTovGe_c discussed at the following DKos diary http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/1/213153/... is blowing up in in his face. This is happening all over the south.
I understand how the national and leading bundler's are screaming for the party to go negative. What they do not realize is that this cycle is just different and by doing this they will be causing far more harm to their brand than they ever would by simply debating the substance of their record. Which does not hold much promise either, but the well has run dry. I am sure that they will go negative. As you said they just do not have any other options at this time.
Unfortunately for them, it just plays right into the established narrative and may well cause them the extra 2-5 seats in the senate that may well push us over the coveted 60 mark. In a way I say "Bring it on", chances of us reaching 60 this cycle without this assistance from the opposition would be problematic at best. Now if they do go super/hyper negative I suggest that there is a better than 50/50 chance that we will pick up at least 3 of the 7 contested southern senate seats. Combined with the blow back of 1-4 points in other key races in OR, MN, AK & N.C. may well turn the trick.

    OT:

What is going on? Why has no mention been made that Bush has broken one of the cornerstone laws of our democracy, Posse Comitatus. He has now stationed a major military unit on our American soil for the express purpose of using the army against the American people. Bush has taken the crown of despot, dictator, tyrant, emperor, king and czar and placed it on his head. No one has had the guts to even squeek in protest. Is no one going to even say anything, anyone going to try to stop him? At this point, the November elections are a foregone sham. They will be meaningless. If anyone protests, American fighter jets will straff their neighborhoods indescriminately killing hundreds of Americans. If Congress says anything, goodbye Congress, they will all be machine gunned. Please, please, please tell me I'm wrong and that the Constitution, Bill of Rights and laws of this nation still mean something. Or are you too cowardly to be the first to die for what we used to love, the United State of America as it existed under those documents.

There's no doubt the sh*t-storm is coming. Any day now, the sky to open and the worst, most unscrupulous attacks to be unleashed. Desperation is about to set in.

I absolutely expect the TV to be filled with the worst lies and images that can muster down the stretch. I mean, here we are now in October and there hasn't been a mention of Rev. Wright?? You can't tell me he's not going to show up god-damning America all over again! There's going to be a final flurry of stuff that going to make us all want to puke.

Of course the bullshit is about to hit the fan.

McCain is bleeding from the economy, the bailout bill and sarah palin. He has NOTHING to offer and I have said, already, McCain will go to the nasty and get racial quick. He can 't allow the polls to continue on this course. I expected Wright after all the debates, but he may need to play that brotherman card sooner than later. The next thing is this, will the public bite? They already know about him. Chuck Todd does not think so, because the public is so worried about the economy. If it was a peace and prosperity election, Wright would play fine, but this is a recession election, I don't think he will. Remember, those that wanted an excuse not to vote Obama was never going to vote for him anyway. It is up to the public to vote their economic interest, let's see if they are smart enough to see through the bullshit.
