Jesse Helms was an early adopter of the 50% +1 strategy. He maintained his base of religious fundamentalists and tobacco farmers - two powerful constituencies in that state. He pandered to that base and gave a raised middle finger to the rest of North Carolina.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
I read about a third through. Don't want to know even more about him than I already knew that was despicable after reading he was a slum lord.

Sheesh, that makes so much sense about it if you understand it from a southern perspective.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
It was common knowledge in North Carolina that he was a slum lord. That didn't stop the tobacco farmers from voting for him.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
    Uh, they're called, "white trash."
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Enough with the "white trash" theme. It is a term invented by racist, classist bigots to describe poor whites.
  • LawMichigander · 1 year ago
Contrast that with CNN's which only says "accused of racism" and nothing more.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
Whores are paid to read teleprompters. There is no truth in this country.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
It's so easy to speak the truth about these United States when you don't live in these United States.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
The Guardian simply recounted Jesse's record. A task one hopes is not beyond the skills of our esteemed scribbling (jabbering) class but I ain't taking bets.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I gather from your comment that you maintain the fiction that we have freedom of speech and opinion in these United States. Nevertheless, I'm confident that you realize that anything beyond the recitation of propoganda is socially disruptive outside of the blogs and will eventually be punished.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
You assume I participate in "society"...
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
    That's true.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
If anything, the Guardian was kind to him. As someone who grew up in North Carolina, I can state that they did not even scratch the surface of how evil that old bastard was.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
It's a peculiar thing about hating black people in the south but the hatred in northern states exists so clean up your own problems and stop blaming your crutch, the south. Bigest bigot I ever worked with was from Mass. And he thought he could be "really open" about it to me since I was from "the south." The same goes for the black community. Get your shit together and stop blaming the south, too. Or "white racism" in general.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
    Yes. All that. Truth!
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    OT.

    Bin Laden gets his wish.

New York Times, 14 October 2001
''If bin Laden takes over and becomes king of Saudi Arabia, he'd turn off the tap,'' said Roger Diwan, a managing director of the Petroleum Finance Company, a consulting firm in Washington. ''He said at one point that he wants oil to be $144 a barrel'' -- about six times what it sells for now.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Helms was white trash. Good riddance. I remember last night that I had written him years ago, I would piss on his grave when he croaked. Cracked me up after remembering it. Robertson and Dobson, you're next. And the rest of you yuppie fundie warriors. The fire is going out. Now the rest following just don't seem to have that same hateful fire...
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
OK, need a correction of myself here. Hey, when I see I'm wrong, I admit it. None of these were yuppies.

    My apologies.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Tony Perkins is a yuppie, though. So is Ralph Reed...
  • GeorgeSalt · 1 year ago
Franklin Graham is one of the new breed. He's as as contemptible they come - far worse than his old man
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Yeah, he had his 'ministry' passing out bibles right after the invasion of Iraq for oil.

I'm just going to watch my grainy PBS cooking shows. I don't know what the hell they're cooking but it's funny. This cook just said "you need to strain it to remove all the wrinkles." I like that than the constant idiocy from the msm and moron americans on other programs.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Hey - I grew up as white trash also. My grandfather was a prison guard. I lived in the poor section of Fayetteville NC. I resent the term "white trash." It dates back to the Southern caste system, with African-Americans and Native Americans as the lowest caste, followed by "White Trash, then the other classes, with the "Southern Gentility" at the top. By calling someone white trash, you are calling them "barely better than a Negro." It is a racist term.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
Even people of good heart fall into these established traps. Your comment is a lesson for us all. If we are to break with the hatefulness that permeates our society, first we must first recognize how we keep it going and then refuse to keep feeding it.

    It's as simple as that.

Great comments from you today, ekwhite.
  • bigassbelle · 1 year ago
and was probably a good christian, yes? what a repulsive creature. would that all the rest could join him in the hot place.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
Mitch McConnell is another low life lying, racist scumbag. I guess what it all boils down to is that the South is still reeling form having its ass kicked from the Mason-Dixon line to the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks North Carolina - for one of the most racist pieces of s*** to ever walk the Earth. See if you can't do better in the next Century (same to you guys in KY, AL, et al.).
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
What regional area are you from? Plenty of racists there. too, I bet. Really.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Mitch McConnell is from Kentucy, coal extraction. That's not the "South."
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Kentucky is considered "the North" here." Far northerner and foreign. The weren't part of the Confedercy. Sorry coward asses. Why, noboby around these parts has ever met anyone from Kentucky. (no kidding) They belong to y'all northerners.
  • Schmedlap · 1 year ago
Right, they were not part of the Confederacy but they had slaves as did West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Missouri which fought for the Union. In fact, these states took it upon themselves to rid themselves of slavery during the war. The Emancipation Proclamation applied only to the Conderate states.

I agree with the earlier comment about Massachusetts. Lived there for five years and heard the "n" word for the first time in years. Remember Louise Day Hicks and the busing controversy?

Sorry fact is that racism exists everywhere. The main difference I find is that Southern politicians are unmotivated to campaign vigorously for racial equality and Northern politicians are free to do so. That leads to only one conclusion: The ferocity of racism in the South exceeds that of the North. I've lived a large part of my life in the South, too. Make no mistake about it, the Confederate flag is a terrorism device.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Excellent comment.
Racism is everywhere. I've traveled extensively through or lived in all but one state. In my experiences, the most blatant racism was found in inland Maine and the UP of Michigan but by no means limited to there. Northern politicians are most likely to include some degree of "equality" in their campaigns, and garner votes because of it, while Southern politicians rarely do and are championed for the exclusion. In my experience "the ferocity of racism in the South exceeds that of the North" is true.
  • KatherineHepburnEyes · 1 year ago
Isn't Joe Sudbay of Americablog from Massachusetts (or is it Maine)?
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Excellent comment. One of the amazing things about the north was the bigotry against ethnic groups I had never heard of. My brother's ex-Mother in Law, who still lives in Fall River MA, used to rail against "those damn Portuguese." When I was living in New Jersey, I used to hear the N word a lot more than in the post-segregation South.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
You do realize that alot of southerners had ancestors killed in that war? Not so many with northeners at the time. And blacks and southerners have been here the longest, and you know? Your ancestors probably got here 50 years ago. I had a jewish friend of mine who got really angry and more angry about being jewish than being gay. Go ahead on, though.
  • catty · 1 year ago
Actually the south went red when Johnson passed the civil rights bill. That's when the bigots united. What is remarkable, is some red states may turn blue ,because of Bush and waht he's done to the US.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
As a former North Carolinian, I can tell you that insults will NOT convert anyone to our side. North Carolina is a potential swing state - Jesse Helms was a master at squeaking by with narrow wins despite the sheer hatred of him by a large minority of North Carolinians. And by the way, I have met many a racist low-life scumbag here in the "liberal" state of California, as well as in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and a lot of other "liberal" states. See if you can do better in the next century also.
  • jr · 1 year ago
"Jesse Helms was a saint among men"-cable news
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
    McShrub hasn't said anything.

    Too funny.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
US mainstream media: Helms was cantankerous, but like your grandpa, ya just had to love him, anyway! He was a straight-shooter, and you could always take him at his word! He was a loving and faithful husband! And a courtly Southern gentleman! Gosh darn it, he was as crustily lovable as a Muppet, just like the Cookie Monster!
  • RenoAnne · 1 year ago
It's nice to see someone in the world get this piece of human filth's obituary somewhat right.
  • Joe Perez · 1 year ago
Thanks for the link. I reply on my blog here.
  • nikto · 1 year ago
The location of his gravesite should be indicated so it can be a national site,
attracting thousands each week to piss on his grave.

Helm's burial site should be permeated by the smell
of inner-city "ammonia" (if you catch my drift).
  • KatherineHepburnEyes · 1 year ago
I wonder if the whereabouts of his grave will be known to the public?
  • shanobama · 1 year ago
Hey, he was a slum lord too?

    What a freakin' overachiever!
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
I suspect this racist, homophobic asshole will be vaulted, not actually buried. So, as much as I'd like to squat over his grave and let go a huge dump, it ain't gonna happen. He was a waste of skin alive, and if there is a hell (which I don't actually believe), he'll be sitting at the right hand of Lucifer.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
Helms was pond scum, but he would not have prospered unless he was repeatedly reelected by the bigons from North Carolina. He got away with saying despicable things because the journalists.
Bush said when Helms retired "Sen. Helms has been a tireless defender of our nation's freedom and a champion of democracy abroad". Like all our politicians he was about himself and not a single talking head ever took him on.
Good riddance, sorry you lived this long.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Bigons? I assume you mean bigots, lynchie.

Here's the man that is responsible for the rise of Jeese Helms:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/09/politics/09fi...

And he's a gay man, for Christ sake!
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
You can leave a message in the Jesse Helms Memory Book:
    http://www.jessehelmscenter.org/memorybook/defa...
  • mirth · 1 year ago
Oddly, my Jesse Helms Memory Book message did not appear.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
I left a message praising Jesse for "courageously standing up to filthy homosexuals, shiftless black people, and bra-burning ladies." I wonder if they will let it appear on the site. So far, there are only about 30 messages, so I am assuming they are filtering out most of what they receive.
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
Shirley, that piece was just proof that selfish, Randian types don't give a shit about gays in general, just what THEY want, and they will take advantage of progressives who work for changes in the law. I'm sure The Fink only married to make sure all that ill-gotten money he's made over the last 35 years doesn't wind up helping to advance gay causes.

The article goes on to describe Finkelstein as a "Libertarian" which is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing, IMHO, they wouldn't care if babies (or anyone else) died, as long as the govt didn't help. I'll bet he goes to Helms' funeral, too. Wonder if he'll take his spouse? These people are as disgusting as Helms himself, because they are takers, not givers--it's always about them, no one else.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Where are they burying him?

I need to take a piss.
  • nikto · 1 year ago
    OK, everybody, let's sing along:

    Has anybody here
    Seen my old friend Jesse
Can you tell me where he's goooone

He's burnin' in Hell's lower level,
    and temp's still goin' up,
    I just hear him scream,
    and he's gone...
  • joshuasgrandma · 1 year ago
The biggest lie about Jesse is the claim he was a 'southern gentleman' - A true southern gentleman always exhibits basic common decency in face-to-face relationships. He may rail about those 'uppity blacks' but is always polite and decent in person! Jesse, on meeting new Senator Carol Mosely Braun, sang Dixie at her and said he would 'sing it until she cried'. That is no southern gentleman, that is a man who has no decency and even totally forgot his thin veneer of manners! I guess the fact of 'uppity' actually reaching the Senate just blew him away!
