AMERICAblog: The majority of the country agrees with us, so why does the right continue to set the agenda?

Because they are willing to advocate violence (see Rush Limbaugh-riots). Usually, the guy with a gun to your head sets the agenda.

The greatest threat to our democracy -- hell, to the planet, more than the Republican Party, more than China, more than $200 dollar a barrel oil, and sure as hell more than Osama, is the Media-Industrial complex. That is the challenge facing us; we MUST bring it down if we are to survive.
  • Patriot · 1 year ago
The super coporations, the influential religious rich, and the genuine "war is good" nut cases (aka Lieberman / McSame) have the stranglehold because they are still in power. The solution is simple. Vote them out.

Oops! What am I thinking? This would cost some of us money. Move along folks. Nothing to see here.
  • smiling_dog · 1 year ago
Because it's not the people who decide the agenda. It's the large corporations. The "Right" does their bidding for them.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Why does the right set the agenda?

I can answer that in 4 words: The two party system.

The instant we ditch the 2 party system and move to a parliamentary system, all this rightwing domination of our country will end.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
The right wing corporate media boardrooms call the shots...pretty simple dot to dot connection actually. Anyone with any honest familiarity with the media would know the corps used the synergy and downsizing of the late 80s and 90s to eliminate traditional FDR liberals from the smaller synergized newsroom. This liberal massacre, which allowed Monica, 2000, 911, 2004, Katrina and, most dreadful of all, the Iraq lie made the remaining paycheck addicts very pliable.
Just because the smiley-faced liars of modern emasculated corporate nooz constantly self-justify doesn't mean all of us listening have to swallow.
  • constantcomment · 1 year ago
cus they are so good at using the vernacular of fear.
  • Patriot · 1 year ago
I'm not sure paradox is the right term. The situation she describes seems perfectly George Orwell "Animal Farm" to me.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Rightwing corporate interests control much of every country on earth.... even France, Britain, Japan, and Germany. But of all those countries only the United States has many millions of people with no health care and many millions virtually enslaved by debt. Why? Because the two party system here makes it impossible to accomplish any big changes such as health care reform or making all education free. The two party system has emasculated America, at least as far as serving the interests of our own citizens is concerned.

As long as our laws allow corporations to create MONOPOLIES as we now can do, we can expect a corporate owned and operated media to do what is best for them. Not for us, but the bottom line is what is sought in any corporation. Disgusting you say? Yes and worse, however now that the Bush administration has changed the laws in which we operate, we can now expect more to come.

We seem to have become (in practice) an Oligarchy, which means we are ruled by a few that are far more wealthy than most. Bush and his minions have done far more damage than most even imagine.

    Monopoly (according to Wikipedia):
    1. In Economics, monopoly (also "Pure monopoly") exists when a specific individual or enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it. [1] Monopolies are thus characterized by a lack of economic competition for the good or service that they provide and a lack of viable substitute goods. [2] Alternatively (a modern and less common usage), it may be used as a verb or adjective to refer to the process (see Monopolism) by which a firm gains persistently greater market share than what is expected under perfect competition. The latter usage of the term is invoked in the theory of monopolistic competition.
    2. In political discourse, the term monopoly is frequently invoked as a blanket generalization in criticism of firms with large market share or lack of what's perceived as "fair" competition. [3]

Shirley, Most of these socially democratic countries have checks on corporate power...The corrupt two party system through the growing allure of lobbyist and unregulated special interest money eliminated or neutered our domestic checks. Of greatest importance were the changes to the Federal Communication Code in 80s and 90s which allowed unfairness and inaccuracy to run riot in the public arena.
How do any individual members of the semi-literate public learn of anything except through free, fair and factual media???

I want faces and names connected to the shameful questions flung at this man of God today.
The whole uplifting Press Club thing today, though not the current collapse of media credibility (you too Richard Quest you still employed meth addict you), reminded me of the 2006 Colbert speech to the WHCA and the resulting press pout...

Mike Whitney on today's CounterPunch website says it succinctly: "It is so frustrating to hear people say, 'The media is not doing its job.' That's just plain wrong; the media IS doing its job. It's cheerleading the country to war, it is diverting attention from the main political and economic issues of the day, and it is destroying the system’s political enemies, actual or potential." The corporate media now is a propaganda arm. The upper reaches still present some information to give the illusion of news, but they don't connect dots, they don't follow up, and they never cover their own role in the process. Digby has the right of it when she says out that this year, the Democrats aren't fighting the Republicans -- they're fighting the media.

She likes Obama and Joe and those buds he teams up with, go after her because of her views.

My take? Reality does not sell papers or motivate the couch potatoes. The old term "right is might" is more or less correct. And let's face it, if it doesn't hit the news, then Americans don't know about it. Classic example, Edwards got frozen out of the race, except for his $400 haircut, he wasn' news. Reality is John McCain is an aging flip-flopper, news is he is a darling. Guess what, McCain is the new Bush, why is that? Why aren't questions asked?

As far a Rev Wright, Keith Olbermann nailed it tonight. Rev. Wright has made several statements that have raised eyebrows over the weekend. Rev. Wright is writing a book to be released right before the elections, ya think his press rounds are just an accident? Obama has a problem with the right and Wright.

I read that the Edwardses will be taking off for Disneyland to avoid election chaos. I had, earlier, copied something which I cannot find, that said what I have thought. Edwards isn't going to declare, he is waiting for the final outcome and going fro the winner, his goal, a position with either of them.

Righto! Wright came on strong today and yesterday. And while I agreed with a lot of what he had to say, there was still SO much in his text that was ANTI Obama. I don't really believe that he and Barack are all that close...it appears that the Reverend has his own agenda here.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Easy answer. The Corporate Propaganda Media (CPM) isn't ready for the views of the Right to be at odds with the American public. It doesn't jibe with the Corporate status quo of screwing the average American. Therefore, the CPM will continue to try to pound the American media consumer with their right wing mantras. Fortunately, gas and food prices are starting to awaken the sheep.

So when did this change, I mean looking right to left? I saw Arianna twice this week, once with Stotsel? and with Bill somebody or other. Arianna was a died in the wool Republican and switched sides, I think it was in the 90's. So when did the press/kmedia change? I think the key to the question " why does the right continue to set the agenda" can be found in the boardrooms across this nation and linked to a time period when guys like Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch took over most the news.

There is a huge, engineered (by corporate media), disconnect going on. ALL the news programs, even other than Fox, pretend that far right is mainstream. They misrepresent "liberal" and use it virtually as a swearword or denigration.

The VIEWS of a majority of the people in the US, are decidedly liberal, but they have been for YEARS. But you would't know it by the news. I've never heard a tv "journalist" ask a guest if he thought so-and-so was "too conservative?" to be elected, but they ask it ALL THE TIME about liberals as if it were a real question.

It seems like the neocons flipped McCain from backing a withdrawal from Iraq last autumn. His campaign was on life support when he backed a timetable for withdrawal, but then he flipped (or forgot?), backing a "100 year" occupation, and presto!, McCain wins New Hampshire, then the nomination, and the decrepit turncoat is in a strong position to win the presidency because of his blatant hypocrisy and complete lack of honour.

The real reason that Democrats can be in favor of values that are shared by most Americans and still be perceived as impotent voices in the wilderness is that they don't know how to say these things properly any more.

FDR was able to simply say the word 'Republican' in a way that would make people laugh. Democrats are now so gun-shy that they are still, after all these years of GOP failure and disgrace, afraid to be direct with their audience.
  • bulldog909 · 1 year ago
The only way liberals can claim the majority of the country agrees with them is to lie about their beliefs. Ask people if they support banning guns, the vast majority will say no. Ask if something should be done to reduce gun violence, they will say yes. Ask if they support abortion on demand with no restrictions, no. Do they support a womans right to choice? Yes. When unabashedly liberal candidates face openly conservative candidates, the results are clear, and disasterous for the liberals (McGovern v Nixon, Carter V Reagan, Mondale v Reagan). Only when repubicans run middle of the road moderates (Ford, GHWB, Dole) do the dems have a chance. Which is why with McCain, they have a chance, since he is a middle of the road as they come.
  • Mike_H · 1 year ago
Uhm, why is anyone even asking this question? The answer is completely obvious, it's the mainstream media, which is owned by corporations that are part of the neocon agenda.

Seriously, it all comes back to this, and the fact that liberals and progressives aren't realizing this and doing something about it that is part of the problem.

The public is semi-literate because the public schools, which have a virtual monopoly on education, are turning out semi-literate graduates.

Jeremiah Wright has singlehandedly de-railed Obama's campaign. Absolutely the most ridiculous chain of events that anyone could ever dream up. Talk about not knowing when to keep your mouth shut! Everyone was anticipating that Hillary or McCain supporters would make the campaign about race; .... instead it was Obama's own friend and pastor. Wright stands to monopolize center stage through both the NC and Indy primaries.

It's difficult to to figure out who is addressing whom on disqus.

Here's a little "heads up", DNMMCDT; Obama has lost over 3 points in North Carolina since yesterday. These are Jeremiah Wright negatives coming home to roost.
Now, you're obviously the self annointed bigtime intellectual around here; so what is your take, if any, on this?

As usual, AQ-2, I think you've nailed it. Why would Edwards forego being Attorney General, Sec of State, VP or any other job he wanted by hitching his star to either candidate right now.

I don't know if Dana Milbank is considered a liberal or conservative; but he says it all better than I have about how Wright has pretty much deepsixed Obama's fantastic (up until now) campaign.

You know, I don't have a dog in this fight anymore. McCain and Hillary might as well be clones. I was hoping that Obama's intellect could lead him to new tactics to end the war and stop the creeping fascism; but, he's in the process of being run over by the JW "train to glory".

The total damage done to the campaign can't even be assessed yet because Wright is still in front of the cameras alienating about every faction of the voters that Obama needs to win.
