AMERICAblog: The Party of Lincoln is now the Party of McConnell, Coburn, DeMint and Vitter

The Magic Christains will ensure the sow-uth shall fall again, suh.
But all Krugman's aside, the "Obama's too liberal" meme running riot through the lazy holiday media (even the "stunningly superficial" gas bags) and the smoking remnants of the GOP are geared to maintain some of the pork and graft-laden machinations of corrupt Team Bush's astronaut killing and Halliburton-gifting Moon spectacular among other things. I hope Obama's people see through the BS to more temperate and less spectacular scientific applications like a Lagrange station and exploration of near Earth asteroids. http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/air_spa...
But .. but . . . but . . Rick Warren is going to be the keynote speaker for the new administration. Doesn't that mean that the Republicans are going to give Obama everything he wants? Hey, guys, he "reached out" for crying out loud. Aren't you going to roll over for him? I hope caving in to Warren wasn't like totally wasted.

Maybe Warren plans on coming out at the inauguration...he will then say he has immediately been cured and Obama is Satan and declare the beginning of Armageddon.

Both those pieces have a fundamental flaw: What's left of the Rethugs, esp. of their so-called leaders, is that they are NOT real conservatives, they're reactionaries, especially when it comes to social policies. Big difference. And they don't mind giving to the greedy and ignoring the needy--that's hardly a conservative fiscal stance, either.

My prediction for 2009: These republicans will be knocked on their asses and put in their place. They are completely and utterly irrelevant now. The American people will have no patience for these idiots anymore.
And maybe Rush Limbaugh will drown in his own filth and self-loathing this year. A girl can dream..............

I'm sorry? Did you say republican moderates? There is no such animal, they were driven extinct by conservative fear and hate 20 years ago.

"So, the GOP strategy is working -- for us, not them."
It's working for us if we don't let them sabotage productive efforts with their stonewalling and lies. I still don't understand why just uttering the word "filibuster" has the effect of shutting everything down.
Did it ever mean what I thought it meant? Why don't they have to stand up and filibuster? Why not say, fine, filibuster your asses off but stand before the people and come up with some crap to read and bore the hell out of yourself and the world and let the people see who's holding things up and what reasons are being given for that?
I get the feeling that it's somehow rude for Reid to make his fellow exalted Senators be inconvenienced by such a demand and that just sucks. The Senate is out of control. They answer only to themselves and that is wrong. They need to answer to the people and do the people's work. That is not happening.

I agree. What ever happened to having to stand there with the phone book and read names for 12-24 hours. If someone says filibuster then make them do it. How commmitted is someone going to be when they actually have to follow through on their threat and the public as a whole gets a chance to see what this is really all about. I feel like back in the day when people (ie.. the populace of the country) had an attention span of more than 30 seconds this would fly but in this modern day age of instant gratification how far into the Encyclopedia Brittanica is someone going to get before their senatorial phone starts ringing off the hook.

the first few months will be a steep learning cruve for barack obama. people care less about ideological land grabs (uniting right, left, up and down) than about achieving results. what he will learn is that you don't achieve results by trying to please everybody from the mushy middle.

Anytime David Vitter says or does anything everyone should just start talking about prostitutes and diapers until he stops and goes to sit quietly in a corner somewhere.

I always make it a point to laugh at/berate any Republican who proudly boasts of the "Party of Lincoln." It was around 5th grade when I learned that the Republican Party of Lincoln's era was the LIBERAL party at the time. (Or at least the only party with a liberal wing.) A lot of discussions have been ended on that point.

The south has never stopped fighting the civil war... A southern woman I knew once, told me she was 50 years old before she realized damn and yankee was two words...
I say let the south secede from the union...
If that Russian professor has any credibility, we may just see his prediction come true of America breaking in 6 regions by June 2010.... I'd be happy if just the south breaks off....

Anything that has to do with putting the country's economic well-being first will easily be filibuster proof. The Maine senators, McCain!!! and Republican senators from states where their counterpart is a Democrat won't go the filibuster route against economic recovery policy. Another strategy that the Democrats should pursue is to investigate the hell out of all the illegal shit that the Bush administration was involved in to keep the Republicans further on the defense. Also, let's recall that the Republican majority threatened the nuclear option of doing away with the filibuster if it didn't get its way on Allito. I think the tables should be turned and a similar threat made to any obstruction they may want to attempt against major policy initiatives. There are a lot more people who consider economic recovery and economic fairness as more important than Allito being on the Supreme Court. Also, let's call the bluff on the pseudo-Moralists like Rush and his percocet addiction, O'Reilly and his phone sex habits and Bill Bennett and his gambling habits.

Lincoln would not recognize today's Republican party. Heck, if he had magnets on his corpse and copper wire wrapped around his coffin, the turning in his grave would probably generate enough power for the entire state of Illinois. :)

David Vitter?????? Are you effing kidding????? How could ANY Senator, let alone a clingtotheoletacticseventhoughwegotspanked Republican even deem him fit to listen to? If I was a sitting Senator I'd gleefully take the floor and read the list of Amex receipts to Madam's Pamper Parlor and Pro Depot attributed to Dirty Diaper David Vitter. All you crusty redundant Repug blowhards shut up and sit down

It may be we'll need a few more 700 point Dow Jones plunges to remind the public that the Senate obstructionism is bad for the nation.
