AMERICAblog: The Republican Senators want Lieberman

  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
Oh that is a delicious scenario! Dick Cheney in the spotlight just in time for the election! Showing America where we are headed with more GOP! Go Joe Go! Ditch the bitch and switch! PLEASE go over now!
  • Bubbles · 1 year ago
A bit of the old jujitsu politics. That's a specialty of Reid. He's more effective in the minority than he is in the majority.

Let's just hope that it scares American's enough to vote for Obama in the election.

apparently Dem voter registration is surging ....rawstory i saw it i think

"His own vice-presidential pick of Joe Lieberman was vetoed by Karl Rove, the wizard behind the Bush administration for the past eight years.

If John McCain cannot even pick his own running mate and fails to stand up to the likes of Karl Rove, how will he reform Washington?"

Actually, I believe that even if Holy Joe were to switch tomorrow, there would not be revote on control of the Senate--the Dems would still be in control, meaning they would still chair all of the committees and would continue to set the agenda as they do now.

But, next year I certainly expect Joe's committee assignments (he chairs the Homeland Security Committee) to go to a deserving Dem, and not Lieberman.

    from a commenter at Yglesias:

It’s really quite simple, as long as everyone is talking about Sarah Palin, they’re not talking about failed GOP policies. Palin is serving the purpose of the GOP by becoming the lightening rod that is designed to pull all discussions of anything political in her direction

Bravo...I've been thinking this for a week. Missy Hockey Mommy is the perfect Rovian distraction from reality. Except for us faggots who cannot bear to look at her Anchorage Walmart wardrobe choices.

You know we're all not President Bush...Many of us can walk, chew gum and juggle at the same time.
Caribou Barbie, or Agnew considering her sharp forked tongue, is the embodiment of Rethuglican failure and spin, except for her WalMart Fashions and unkempt hair...Cindy's so mortified she's dropping hair like a mange-riddled pooch.

    Sarah Palin's Jet.

Not only didn't she sell it on Ebay.

Not only did she sell if for a loss.

But she also sold it at a bargain price to one of her campaign donors.

Now there is an interesting tid-bit! Thanks.

<"It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the plane -- shy of the $2.7 million purchase price -- according to news reports at the time. Reynolds contributed to Palin's campaign in 2006.">

Please let Republicans take him. The Senate has done squat since Dems have had the majority, anyway. It isn't worth it to kiss his ass. God, I hate Lieberman. Please make him go away.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
The republicans have been big on blocking bills and Reid would have to share his position with their republican. Since the republicans believe in a super majority to pass anything and have been voting consistently to obstruct, perhaps, the Democrats could continue it if they would ever vote in a block just like the republicans and create a gridlock stalemate until the new Congress comes in and changes this. It could backfire on them as well since no one seems to care if the republican's drag their feet but if democrats do it, they are the problem. This government has always favored these republican do nothings these past twelve years and I hope this country is tired of it.
  • bunnyjump · 1 year ago
I don't think the neocons care what the population, even what the majority of the Republican party, thinks. Elections have been a sham since 2000. IMO, Cheney could give a shit.

Two months before the election....what are the neocons planning?
  • Savage8862 · 1 year ago
I say Democrats need to dump LIEberman now and let the Republicans take control of the Senate for the short term until November. They would still need 60 votes to accomplish anything and with so little time, they could not do too much damage. Then the Democrats could run with the message the the Republicans once again in control could not help the American people and only rewarded big business. It is a win win situation for Democrats.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
They wouldn't control the Senate, they would share the leadership position with Harry Reid and that would make a stalemate unless Reid loses his spine and agrees with everything the Republicans want to push through, just like he's been doing this past year or so. Perhaps, you are correct all along. ;-)
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
That should help voters decide on getting rid of the obstructionists. Lieberman would be removed as chair of a panel he is on and he would be nothing with the republicans. Just a regular "Joe." ;-) He needs to be made irrelevant.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
I like your last sentence Joe. We need to hear that more often.
  • bumpkis · 1 year ago
Jeez...take the gloves off already...all those campaign contributions that started flowing when Lieberman endorsed him did NOT come from the pro-life and anti-gay crowd. They came from people who want Lieberman sitting in the number two chair if-when McCain departs the scene...the Israeli first crowd...the ones that Palin just got her indoctrination from BEFORE she can even talk to the press.

    Go ahead...you can say it....
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
America's never been kind to turncoats.
I find it so amusing that the McCains, Lieberman and Miss Lindsey all have to kiss up a crude snowbilly like Caribou Agnew.
  • JustAnOldLady · 1 year ago
Now that Obama has appeared on the O'Reilly show, will McCain show he is not afraid and agree to be interviewed on Olbermann's show???
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
Olbermann would be too nice to him. Show him respect but get to the flip-flops and the issues at hand. That will scare McBush enough without having to "rough him up." verbally..

Time for some reflection on a true American. Here is JFK's speech to the Houston Minister's in 1960. Every Republican and Democrat should listen to this speech and take his words to heart.

The separation of Church and State was a major platform. Listen to the start where he talks about the poor in West Virginia, the old who can't afford healthcare, nothing has changed if anything it is worse.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Jr03ADQmk

The similarities are frightening. Religion took over the GOP this past week. Some other great speeches of JFK are on you tube.

    Take my senator, please.
  • ChrisBKLYN · 1 year ago
People keep saying that the Repubs would take control of the Senate if Lieberman switched and it just isn't true. It's been pointed out several times that when this session of the Senate was organized that the dems control of the chamber would extend for the entire session of this congress. If Lieberman leaves at this point the Repubs could make noise but there is not a damn thing they could do to take control of the chamber until the new session in January and at that point the dems are going to have a lot bigger majority.
  • hopelesspedant · 1 year ago
You are wrong on the facts here.

The organizing agreement for this Congress passed by the Senate (it would not have without Lieberman's vote) guarantees Dem control for the remainder of the two-year period.

Harry Reid and Lieberman made an agreement that he would caucus with the Dems, keep his chairmanship, and otherwise be a free agent. He has kept to his side of the agreement, and the Dems got to be the majority no matter what outside events occurred, including Joe doing what he has been.

January 2009 is another story - but remember, Pres. Obama may be struggling to get 60 votes to get his agenda passed, and Lieberman might just be that 60th vote.

Can't stand him myself, but that's political reality.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
Hasn't anybody noticed the slime trail that Lieberman leaves. I would think that would be automatic disqualification for member of Congress, though it really doesn't really have a requirement that Senators or Representatives be human. The Founding Fathers automatically assumed that members would be human. Bad, bad assumption.
  • ChrisBKLYN · 1 year ago
hopelesspedant - Obviously great minds think alike ;)
  • DAinLA · 1 year ago
Not true. Republicans would not have control of Congress. Democrats still would. The majority party cannot change during a session. The majority party is established at the beginning of the year and it remains that way until the next Congress begins - in January. All committees would still be controlled by Democrats. The only difference would be in voting on bills - and that would not make much of a difference with Lieberman.
  • hopelesspedant · 1 year ago
Actually, not automatically true. Control of the Senate did change in 2001 from GOP to Dem when Jim Jeffords switched caucuses. There was a different organizing resolution that year than in 2007.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Congressional complexities, a pet media, lying spinners and Dems fearful of mussiness ensure most people are totally confused regarding Congress.
As I tell people, if you talk in slogans memorized from the toob or talk radio you telegraph your utter lack of understanding and rationality...Read or something, form an opinion all your very own and be able to sustain a brief but anger and slogan-free discussion.
  • DAinLA · 1 year ago
Feel free to let us know what this means.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Feel free to investigate for yourself...Though, I imagine, truth is not your goal.
  • 1stRepublic14thStar · 1 year ago
DAinLA is right. If Lieberman switched, the current Senate (51-49 Dems) would be 50-50. According to the rules, a tie in mid-session means the majority party in control at the start of the session (Democrats) remains in control.

When Jeffords ended his Republican affiliation it moved the Senate from where it had started its session -- 50-50 with Cheney breaking the tie to give the GOP a majority -- to 51-49 Democrats, which enabled the Dems to take control.

The only way to change majority party control in the middle of the current session would be for Republicans to gain TWO seats, thus moving them into a 51-49 majority.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
It has nothing to do with Dick Cheney. It has to do with controlling floor votes and the bill agenda. Cheney can be do stuff behind the scenes. What needs to be put in the spotlight are Vitter,Craig, McConnell, Dole, Collins, Smith (OR) Sununu, and other vulnerable Republicans up for re-election or can persuade the electorate, like Craig and Vitter's antics.
  • burro · 1 year ago
It would be so impressive to see that little rat fink boil on the nations ass get kicked out. It would be a great indication of change and show the world that Dems have some pride and the wherewithal to make a positive difference in their own situation. The scumbag just stood up at RepubCo's Palinpalooza and said he wanted the country to vote for McBush. What does it f'n take? He loves hanging with the fundies. Smite the f**ker down.

And hopelesspedant, "January 2009 is another story - but remember, Pres. Obama may be struggling to get 60 votes to get his agenda passed, and Lieberman might just be that 60th vote."

To keep a schmuck like Lieberman around just for the situations where he can be coerced, bribed, cajoled to do the right thing as a sketchy 60th vote is too painful. The ego tripping alone would be too much to deal with. He has run up his flag. He just told the country to vote against Obama. Getting to the point where 59 votes are available and depending on HoJo to make the day, (hell, giving him the opportunity to make the day), is an untenable proposition.

Lieberman should be made an outcast.

Not exaclty OT: The Roman Catholic bishop of Orlando [known locally as the Polish ambassador] gave the invocation at GOP Convention. He leaves no room for doubt how Catholics are supposed to vote if they want to receive communion.

    EXACTLY RIGHT!!
  • jiminportlandoregon · 1 year ago
Are you sure if LIEberman defects that the Repugs have control? I don't think so. I believe they share power - two chairs for each committee, etc. - and Cheney decides in a tie vote. However, with McCain's record (he hasn't been present in the senate since April 8th and has missed over 100 votes) a tie along partisan lines may not be a concern. Also, with the election so close and the obvious swing to a democratic majority in the offing, they may not bother to change all committees for a couple of months (unless it is written somewhere that they must) I think, as distasteful as it is, they should actually keep LIEberman until November 5th and then tell him to go take a hike. If McCain should win the election, LIEberman will leave the senate anyway for a post elsewhere in the new administration and if Obama wins, LIEberman can be left out twisting in the wind.
  • TampaZeke · 1 year ago
There's another silver lining too. Many of the Republican Senators (like Susan Collins for example) who have been running away from Bush and their Republican party because such a position isn't very popular back home during an election year, will be forced to either vote with their party on some very controversial judges and policies to save face with the party or side with the Democrats to prove their independence back home.
  • Joneses · 1 year ago
Big plus for Liebermann, as still a Dem he can go the Dem's briefings and meetings and can give head's up to the Repugs.
