AMERICAblog: This Just In: Senate Republicans block Medicare bill

Please do not use the word "leader" with the name Reid. He's a disgrace. Where's a Lyndon Johnson type? Now, there was a leader. Nobody rassled with him for long.

7.5% 0f medicare expenditures go to health care professionals and patients. The rest is eaten up by bureaucrats, insurance companies that manage medicare and hospitals that are run like 3rd world countries. It's a national disgrace. AND, this is the system that John McCain and Obama may try to expand to everyone in the country.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
medicare reimbursements don't even begin to cover a hospital's costs.

that's why most community hospitals are running in the red.

their reimbursements have been cut ever since the "balanced budget act" of the 90s.
  • Psyche · 1 year ago
The problem isn't with Medicare per se, it's with the add-ons like Medicare Advantage and the prescription benefit: Insurance companies and big Pharma. Medicare administrative costs are a fraction of those in private insurance. Neither Obama nor McCain have health care programs based on Medicare -- they're both afraid to pass up the largess (and wrath) of the private health industry. Edwards was the only one that allowed the option of buying into Medicare which could have opened the door to universal single-payer (such as they have in most of the civilized world). That's the answer ultimately and, with a huge pool, they can negotiate for lower drug prices the way the VA does.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
medicare is run by the insurance companies. They bid on the contracts to administrate the medicare program. The contracts used to run for 2 or 3 years, don't know about now. When you call medicare, you are calling an insurance company that is subcontracting to the US gov. The costs to administer the program are staggering. I don't know what the ratio is now; but it used to be that 70% of medicare funds went to administration. This doesn't even count the salaries of the bureaucrats, IRS, and DHS workers who work directly for the government. That's why only 7.5% of medicare funds actually wind up being paid to medical doctors. Big business is pushing hard for universal health care coverage because it gets the monkey off their back. It would save GM about $5000 per vehicle.
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
California Hospis program is a silver dime in the penny pile.
    That program in top notch!
    Very helpful and practical.
...Obama may try to expand(medicare) to everyone in the country.
May God help us all if this happens.

The republicans aren't going to do shit for seniors unless they are billionaires - then they would rush to help those poor seniors having to suffering in their mansions.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
This is really big news that is going to get a pass in the main stream media. It means doctors will be refusing patients on medicare even MORE than they do today. There is a lot about Medicare Bill HR 6331 that was good but once again Republicans have taken the side of business to turn this bill down.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
There's no difference between the 2 parties. They will court the senior vote with fear and carrots. Seniors vote en masse and often. A huge voting block. A suffering senior can run up a half million dollar medical bill so quickly that the paperwork trail looks like a confetti parade.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
True but the House passed this bill in a big bipartisan way. The Senate turned it down. Many Seniors would be up in arms IF the media made a big deal of this, but that is not going to happen in an election year.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
One of my kids is a doctor. He gets less for seeing a medicare patient than my vet gets for seeing our dog. Go figure...

On a fixed income in a frigid house you can no longer afford to heat, you choose between food and medication. Fortunately, the Supreme Court newest interpretation of the Second Amendment has given you one last option.

Liberals abort babies, liberals commit suicide. That's the way God made us. Why would any conservative or libertarian want to upset the balance of nature? There is no way that the supremes would outlaw abortion; and, now you are so right: They've put the weapon of your own destruction in your hand.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
When you make statements such as this, you just confirm the worst things I could ever think about you. Shame on you...
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Frankly, I didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

But I didn't really care either.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
People abort babies, people commit suicide, the last time I checked these things were not limited to a specific political group.
  • SouthernYankee · 1 year ago
Ah yes, and conservatives love big business. Love to start wars with countries that didn't attack us. Send our troops to be killed because of BIG OIL. They love to screw with the working people that can't fight back. Destroy our legal system. Destroy every government department in the name of getting this idiot elected again in 2004. Yes am proud to be a true American. McCain/Bush didn't want to pass the bill that would help the troops when they get out because it would not help on reenlistments. Please busboy give us a break. How old are you? Are you a real busboy?
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Polly, I was involved for a long time in helping mothers avoid abortion. 40 million potential democrats down the disposal. Did what we could; but, Planned Parenthood is a powerful force to be reckoned with. They want to abort babies. That is their mission.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
This is not about abortion or suicide, this is about trying to fix a very flawed government program.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
Schools in Canada provide students with sex education, condoms and other birth control. It's not always successful but it helps.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Related:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Skeptical states are shoving aside millions of federal dollars for abstinence education, walking away from the program the Bush administration touts for slowing teen sexual activity. Barely half the states are still in, and two more say they are leaving.

Some $50 million has been budgeted for this year, and financially strapped states might be expected to want their share. But many have doubts that the program does much, if any good, and they're frustrated by chronic uncertainty that it will even be kept in existence. They also have to chip in state money in order to receive the federal grants.

  • SouthernYankee · 1 year ago
I read the article also. But another problem that should worry you guys lthat like is that some Pharmacist don't want to give out any kind of birth control. That even the pill. They are making some pharmacies free of giving out any birth control because of religion. They don't even have to tell you where to go to another place that do have the birth control.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Planned Parenthood is there to HELP women who have an issue with their pregnancy. They do not want to ABORT, they want to help women with whatever their choice may be.

Your slanted view on this is positively horrific and that's about all I want to say about this at this point. Discussion of this crucial issue is hardly just about abortion, but of civil rights for all of us and I don't think that you "get" that aspect of it.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
PP is being sued in Idaho for encouraging women to abort. PP has sued nurses and doctors for providing pregnant women with sonograms because they claimed that PP's "client" relationship has been breached. I really don't care much anymore. PP has also gone over the line encouraging black women to abort. These are your people, aborting your constituency. It's up to you to deal with the problem.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
These are OUR people for goddness sakes Busboy.

These women (and men indirectly) are our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, neighbors and friends; they are NOT owned by any group! It's evident that you do not agree with a woman having an abortion and that is your right, however when you begin to use hate language in describing these issues is when YOU go over that line you speak of.

There's quite a difference between advocating for what you believe and using vile language and/or actions in getting your point across.

As far as ME "dealing with the problem", I think our government has already done same. We currently (at least for now) have actual laws in place stating that all woman can make up her own mind with how they decide to handle their own life and family.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
What's this hate language you're talking about? Didn't I say, I don't care anymore? Are you just trying to pick a fight?
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
The hate language I speak of is you using terms like "THESE ARE YOUR PEOPLE, ABORTING YOUR CONSTITUENCY, THEY ARE YOUR PROBLEM" for beginners. If you look at the bulk of what you have written on this topic right here, right now; you will see LOTS of hate language. The scary part is that you may not even see it as such.

And no, I'm hardly trying to start a fight; but am "responding" to what you have said to me here. Isn't that what blogs are for? To respond to each other about the topic at hand? Look, we may be cyber "friends" but that doesn't mean that I agree with or will put up with that kind of language.

Sorry if you see it as such.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Polly, I don't think abortion is an option. But, abortion is the law of the land. It will never be overturned. You won the battle. Why aren't you happy? Are you mad that only your constituency practices abortion? Hey, it was your idea. Live with it. In the meantime, the USA gets more and more conservative. My kids and grandkids make me look like an FDR liberal. There are some serious changes coming down the pike.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
You say you don't think abortion is an option, whereas the issue really is about CHOICE. You don't have to use the option of having an abortion, but you have the choice to do as you think is best for both you and your family.

And yes, Row V Wade has made CHOICE the law of the land, and thank God for that! It represents far more than just using the option of choosing an abortion versus child birth BUT it has to do with ALL of our civil rights, so YOU should actually be glad for that.

Yes, I am "happy" that AT THIS POINT we do have the option of women and men choosing what they think is best for themselves or their family; that IS something to be celebrated and NO, I'm not mad that anyone chooses to have or not to have an abortion; as it is their individual choice; thus none of my business!

As far as whether the United States is getting more conservative or not, I guess we will have to wait but from my viewpoint, it seems to be going the other way and it is about time. BUT we will have to wait and see before we judge...
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
So, we have no area of disagreement, right? Can we go back to being civil or do do you represent the "thought" police??
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I see. If we disagree about an issue, it is "I" who represent the thought police?

How totally fascist of you darling...
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Here's some more of that hate language of which I speak:
"Liberals abort babies, liberals commit suicide. That's the way God made us."

There is much more in this thread (see below), but I have cited some of the most egregious.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
If it's true? It's not hate language. I'm a practicing Catholic. We do not abort children. We are not allowed to commit suicide. You are a liberal atheist and can do both if you please. It doesn't mean we can't have many of the same goals. It just means that we have certain limitations that do not apply to you.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Here's some more HATE language Bus:

"PP has also gone over the line encouraging black women to abort.'

And this IS hate language, and it is NOT true, so please do try to get this straight. Just because YOU may believe something true, does NOT make it thus. In fact, it just may show your own bias and/or prejudice.

I'm glad you're a Catholic, but that does not make your religion the only one that is right about any one issue. It's good for you and your family, fine; but that does not mean it is true or right for everyone.

And how bloody DARE YOU call me a liberal atheist! How dare you judge me or my beliefs when you know nothing of either!

I guess I have come to grips with your own prejudice and have seen for myself just how nasty you can get in judging others. I think you are free to practice and believe what you wish, that is part of our glorious freedoms within our country, BUT you do not get to judge my life or beliefs when you have no knowledge of me.

Your hubris here, is astoundingly vulgar!
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
I'm just going on things you've said in the past. If you want to set the record straight? This is a good time to do it. If you aren't a liberal atheist; then, what are you? I'm not prejudiced. You are. I accept the status quo. I accept you. You are having a hard time accepting me.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
You are going on things I have said in the past? I have said things to you that suggest I am an atheist? Well right there it shows that you have not read what I have posted correctly, not to mention the denigration suggested in your language.

Why should I feel a need to prove to you now how or what I believe when you have already taken things that I have said and distorted them for your own benefit? I feel no need to discuss my personal beleifs with anyone who speaks of others the way you do. Telling me that PP only tells African Americans to abort children when neither issue is true, must less shows a decidedly vulgar bias on your part.

And it's nice to see that your response to this is to accuse me (once again) of being prejudiced when it was you who is making all of the accusations.

I do not have a hard time accepting you and you should know better. Who was it who has befriended you despite everyone else coming down on me for doing so? Who was it who has continued a friendship with you despite differeing views in all things?

BUT when you begin using the kind of divisive language you are using now (yes, it's called HATE speech) then I do object and I do think I have a right to tell you to stuff that sort of ideology up your wealthy tush.

We can all disagree about the best way to handle issues, but when you decide it's fair game to begin making nasty, divisive and/or racist comments about those issues, then that's when I call a time out.

Just like with children, it appears to be time to take a rest. Agreed?
  • SouthernYankee · 1 year ago

I used to work for a company that did human remains transport.
After the babies... I mean used(Semi) endoeatreal tissue... is discarded they are... I mean the tissue is put into large drums that hold guess what... Medical waist. From there I would pick it up in my white van and take the babies to be cremated... I mean the tissue to be disposed of. We used the same public burn facility that the city uses to cremate the homeless... I mean the unclaimed dead.
Thank you Busboy for your work helping mothers make a better choice.

For what its worth my wife had a child when she was 14. She gave her little girl up to adoption to a nice family in Idaho. She is 14 herself now has a 3.8 GPA and is 6 foot tall. She looks just like a young tall version of her as well. It was the hardest thing she ever had to do in her life. She has felt regret and sadness every day she has missed with her first born girl. She would do the same thing once more without a second thought.
I only wish more woman and girls could show that kind of guts.
I am not saying repeal R-V-W.
Just that I wish ladies would give more thought to what they are doing.

AQ-2, I know you to be a brilliant person. What is your solution; or the way to a solution?
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I have no solution but I will say that cutting doctor payments by ANOTHER 10,5% is not the answer. If you read more about this bill you will see the one of the main problems is the bidding process for equipment, it is a lucrative business and many politicians will not bite the hand that feeds them. The entire Medicare system is so damn cluttered with special interests, it is like a mythical hydra. Cut off one head and a new one springs up.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
    I totally agree.
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
The system needs to be scraped and something better put in place. Something less Federal dependent. Most of the problems that we have is that the Feds can not control everything from D.C. they need to let the states govern there own affairs. The more the Fed takes a hand the more power is gained by folks who are ALL embedded in special interests. That can only be changed at the state level. Everybody at the fed level is just going to add another coat of red tape over the 500,000 layers of tape that is already there. We try and go to a state run system you will see the system fall apart same as every other thing the feds get a hold of.

OT but it's a bit slow here

I guess if you have an A-bomb and a truly big standing army you get diplomacy...

Aminex believes its prospects of striking oil in North Korea are good.

"We all dream of making a big discovery," chief executive Brian Hall told BBC News Online. "And if you don't put yourself in a position where the possibilities are high, you will never do it."

A number of potential sites are close to some of China's most productive oil fields, he said. Announcing the contract, Aminex called North Korea as "highly prospective".
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
John lets do a bit on this...from the House Judiciary Committee:

David Addington was there under subpoena. And he wasn't happy about it.

Could the president ever be justified in breaking the law? "I'm not going to answer a legal opinion on every imaginable set of facts any human being could think of," Addington growled. Did he consult Congress when interpreting torture laws? "That's irrelevant," he barked. Would it be legal to torture a detainee's child? "I'm not here to render legal advice to your committee," he snarled. "You do have attorneys of your own."

    Unless he gets elected.

Between Diebold and caging he doesn't have to be elected. But if he thinks a little ole terror attack on American soil is going to help him, it won't; it'll help Cheney
  • cosanostradamus · 1 year ago
    .
Then Medicare can get Cheney a new, er, a heart, and reanimate him so he can be McBush's Pres, er, Vice-President.

See, if you'll just give it a chance, the system works!

    For some people.

  • RenoAnne · 1 year ago
Doesn't McCain have children on Medicare? He should speak up about this.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I think all the Congress should receive the same medical options as the general population. Maybe then they would figure out something is wrong with Medicare. After all, why should they, upon retirement, be entitled to the best and FREE medical care for the rest of their lives? Maybe if Cheney had to beg and plead for coronary care or Hatch had to beg for cancer treatment, or even Byrd hospitalized for 3 days for a fever, they would realize that the general population is getting shafted under Medicare.

You have to walk in someone else's shoes to know how difficult the road is, these guys don't and never will.

  • TruthTransom · 1 year ago
This exact scenario is why Obama was so smart to endorse Bush's FISA compromise. Obama wants to end all this rediculous partisan bickering and finally start passing some legislation instead of endless roadblocks (that the extremist Clintons were known for). We need to once and for all end the knee-jerk rejection of anything Republcan. Obama saw that Bush has our national security at heart in the FISA issue and had to courage to support him. Let's stop all this second-guessing and stand by Barack when he's finally going out on a limb for us. Don't give the racist Clintons the satisfaction of deadlocking government one more time.

The result here will be that Medicare patients themselves will have to make up by copays the amount that Medicare doesn't make. And millions like me won't have the money, so will scale back on doctor visits, to the detriment of our health, which the Rethugs obviously don't care about (just like they don't care whether or not low income children--and those numbers are going up--don't have health care with SCHIP, for instance).

Of course the Rethugs want to save the money to bail out their fat cat donors and Wall St. and be able to engage in massive military spending. Yesterday it was reported that it will take $100 billion to repair and refurbish equipment, etc. owned by the military, putting at risk the recruitment of people, of which 92,000 are needed to maintain current troop levels.

All that money wasted on privatization where theft, fraud and abuse of taxpayers' money was rampant and which will never be recovered. Hundreds of billions wasted on KBR, Halliburton, Blackwater, etc., making them even richer, and to hell with people who have paid taxes all their lives and expected some semblance of a civilized existence which won't exist for far too many.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Eventually, they're going to go after social security and even private retirement accounts. One way or the other. There's just no money left bailing out crooks. Thanks wingnuts.

They have their puppet in the WH with 6 months remaining in his term. Anyone think Nancy Pelosi has any regrets? I don't.

I don't see where else it's headed. Anybody see any other direction but downward, I'd like to know.

Is there anything we can do other than sit on here and post comments. I prefer to not starve to death in the next few years. Once we have replaced the Repugs with the Dems like Pelosi we are just going to have to find a replacement for her and her ilk--I can't tell you how much I am dissapointed in her and Reid. No impeachment. Just rollover politics of p***y democrats. At least the Republicans have the backbone to stand up for what they want regardless of how f'd up it is....Pelosi and Reid are just wimps--they want us to think they are something but they are not...where are the democrats from a few years ago that put up a fight????

REPUBLICANS BLOCK IMPROVED CARE FOR SENIORS AND ALLOW CUTS FACING DOCTORS

And guess what? Most Americans, especially those most affected, are not aware of what the Republicans are doing on this bill. It has not been reported on the TV news where most people get their snippets of what's going on. One has to come to the internet to find out this basic kind of policy news out of DC.

I told an old, die-hard Republican uncle about what his party is doing to his Medicare and he was mad as hell. One, that his own party is trying to cut the benefits seniors like him need. And, two, that he didn't hear about it on the news. This dumb Medicare move might actually hurt the Republicans going into the election because a strong Medicare program is crucial to seniors...that is if the word about what happened actually gets into the MSM.

Also McFlipper wants us to invest in the market instead of SSN. Republican want to bale out big business and screw seniors who worked so hard to earn they SSN and medicare.

Funny how the Senate Republicans can block anything they want but the Senate Democrats just sit there, wringing their hands and pass anything that comes along

To those anti-abortion fanatics who have written truly ignorant and offensive comments on this thread, only in the most dire and emergency situations meant to save life is a "baby" is ever aborted, and only in the most extraordinary situation could these non-fully-developed fetuses have any chance of life outside its mother's womb. Instead, an abortion removes tissue in the earliest stages of development and the terms for these early growths are blastocyst and embryo.
And to those out to "help mothers avoid abortion," I have news for you harassers and clinic bombers and doctor killers: the country, by a decisive majority, rejects your cruel and murderous actions and respects the rights of a female and/or her partner and her physician to determine her reproduction choices.
And to anyone stupid enough to write such as Planned Parenthood wants to abort babies or that Liberals abort babies while implying conservatives do not...well I can think of only this to write: You are a fool of the lowest order.

I looked at the roll call. Why did Sen. Reid vote Nay? it's a poser!
