Seems like the GOP watch too much tv already. Their "Jack Bauer" scenarios for legitimizing torture, their simple idea that everyone will be like some tv hero if they only had guns.
They don't THINK. Take a school shooting spree for just one example. I've heard people actually argue that the teachers should have guns.."then they could stop these nutjobs". But the reality is, something like that is chaotic, disorienting, stressfull, and adrenalin is pumping. At first no one knows what is going on, so what you don't want is a bunch of scared, paniced people walking around with guns. They'd shoot each other, think how it would be for the police who show up, not knowing WHO the shooter(s) are. Plus it isn't like there has never been a teacher that was a nutcase...

Thats a lot of reactionary kneejerk. The "they'd shoot each other" comment is the hallmark of ignorance (sorry, not trying to be combative). Most states have some form of licensed handgun carrying allowed and you dont see these individuals shooting each other. Guns are tools. No different than a hammer..its in the manner of its usage.
What is your solution? Bans? Bans only affect the honest person.

That is the most stupid comment I've ever heard. That could have come right from the NRA. Guns kill. That is all they are designed to do. Yea they are a tool-that is designed to kill. It doesn't take a genious to figure out that if there are fewer guns around, then there will be fewer deaths from guns. "Bans only affect the honest person"-that is pure B.S. People that carry guns around do it for one reason only-because it makes them feel safer. It has nothing to do with whether they are really safer, but everything to do with their feelings. The more guns that are in circulation, the less safe you really are. There is a reason why law enforcement in general does not favor hand guns. Of course to most gun enthusiasts, critical thinking and statistics have no place in this discussion. A lot of crimes and murders happen to gun owners because criminals take the guns away from those "honest persons" and use it on them.

And in a number of school shootings guess what happened the teachers or security staff were armed. Know what happened they were killed by the shooter before they could get a shot off or fired every round not hitting the shooter.
In such a scenario as a mall shooting or school shooting or any other mass murder incident licensed gun holders are far more likely to shoot innocent people rather then the shooter.

Do you have proof if that assertion? I'll note that a church shooting was foiled in Colorado Springs by an armed civilian so its half a dozen of one, half a dozen of the other.

Which is one out of over a dozen incidents in which there were armed civilians when a mass murder or shooting happened.
Most shooting perps either kill themselves or are shot dead by police.
Sorry but statistics and history shows that armed civilians are worthless to stop such incidents. They either get killed first or fire their weapons missing and then are shot dead.
Hell the incident the Limpballs often herald as having armed civilians stop a school shooter he was actually taken down by someone who wasn't armed at all. It happened at the Appalachian School of Law in 2002.

What a coincidence! I, too, have been watching All in the Family reruns lately. It really IS astonishing how much today is like it was then -- in the early 1970s. I was in college then, and didn't pay that much attention to politics, but the terms Archie and Mike use -- I could swear some of the terms were rather new. Nope -- the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I still remember this scene even though I was a child when it was first broadcast. The ideas were so ridiculous even an 8 year old could see it.

The difference today is that on msm cable tv "news" shows we regularly see Archie Bunkers who say things like this with little factual rebuttal, never mind ridicule. Cable "news" is now almost entirely tv sitcom.

Well, there's a reason they sound similar: The Republicans haven't had a new idea since 1971 - the same year All In The Family first aired.

let me add that the gun control arguments haven't changed either. Every time somebody is shot a predictable chorus of useful idiots comes out of the woodwork wanting more guns laws. It all sounds pretty much the same to my ears.

Gun grabbers! Over half of the homes in American cannot be wrong, and your guys desire to kick in doors and take away peoples second amendment rights will not change the fact, that this great nation is armed!
Nothing to see here! One wrong move on this, and the Republicans start winning elections again. You guys and your desire for radical gun restrictions hurt the party as much as the "abortion is murder" types hurt the republicans!

I seemt o remember an ATF agent shoting a woman in the head while she held her baby in her arms during the Clinton gun grabbing years...
Ruby Ridge... right? Then Waco... right? Then the Republicans took control of congress in a sweeping election, but not in time to save us from the OK city bombing.
Don't push to grab guns fellas. It is a losing issue, and will do nothing but put Republicans in office and more poor people in jail.

.. or was Ruby Ridge under Bush 1.... ?? Perhaps it was. I seem to remember the "Jack Booted Thugs" description of the ATF by the NRA drawing his ire....

Bob Hope made a crack about Democarats, in Ghost Breakers, that still makes me laugh. Punch line is directed at the wrong political party; but it still tickles my funny bone.
Bob: Do you live here? Maybe you know what a zombie is?
Man: It seems that when a person dies, a certain voodoo priest has the power to bring them back to life.
Woman: That’s horrible!
Man: It’s worst than horrible, because a zombie has no will of it’s own. You see them sometimes, walking around blindly, with dead eyes, following orders, not knowing what they do! Not caring!
Bob: You mean like democrats?

Every time there's another gun rampage, the right wing loonies roll out "guns for everyone" as the solution."
uhhh.... errrr? Not sure what planet "Chris in Paris" is living on (probly the "french planet")... but here in the USA almost everyone does indeed have a gun. "Guns for everyone" is not a solution or a problem, it is a reality, and a right protected by our consitutution.

My 84 year old mother, who I would not call a liberal but is still pretty open-minded, has a pretty good point about "All in the Family". She appreciated the humor in Archie's character, but she also thinks that his popularity let a lot of people start expressing their "inner Archie" - racist comments that they'd pass off as jokes if you chastised them for it.
Just as Ronald Reagan put a kindly face to greed, Archie Bunker made it OK to be a close-minded anti-liberal.

I'm about as liberal as they come - I'd like to see this become a true Socialist country - but I could give a damn about guns. I don't have one and I don't want one, but I don't think we should stop people from having them.
I do think that only people with military or police training should be allowed to carry concealed weapons, for I totally agree that otherwise, a mall or school shooting will turn into a circular firing squad with a bunch of Barney Fifes shooting randomly as they wet their pants.
But other than that, it's a losing propositon. Let 'em have their guns.
