Welcome to global price deflation! And with our funds rate at 1.5% we're dangerously close to entering a liquidity trap!

Wait. Why is this trouble? If we want to do some infrastructure building, we need this. They consume about half the world's cement right now. If they want to use less of it, it will be cheaper for us to build the roads we need. And let's have some of their cranes too. The Chinese have built more than they need right now, so let's use that stuff to build what we need. If we start building what we need, maybe we'll have jobs. And maybe we can use that stuff after it's built. Of course, building properly would help. So let's start with refurbishing our roads and bridges, and let's build a modern electricity grid. Other countries have those fancy modern electrical grids, why can't we? Oh yeah, it's not profitable under current rules. But why do we insist that a modern country should operate with a third world infrastructure? Thailand thinks that good roads, good public transportation, good electricity, and good communications are a good thing. Why can't we at least follow their lead? They beat us on most of those things and they are a developing country. Why can't we at least keep up with their progress? Yeah, they are still behind us, but they move in the right direction. We are going the other way. And there's no reason for it. We choose to be stupid when we are the smartest and most innovative people in the world. When I travel to Third World countries, people always ask me why we aren't leading anymore. I don't want to give them the answer. The answer is sadly simple. We don't want to. We think we can just relax and everyone will anoint us with precious oils. We ain't kings, and nobody else is, either. We're just the rich rednecks that we are. That won't always work for us. But education and infrastructure will. It's time to compete.

Chris, are you aware that exports account for about 5% of China's economic output? Yes, exports are a main growth driver, perhaps accounting for a quarter of growth, but the idea that the Chinese economy will wilt without American demand is just a wishful talking point shared by left and right wing China bashers. "Violent dissension in the countryside" is one possibility the new land reform is aimed at. I'd say the unstable USA is by far the world's biggest problem.
