When I went away to college (1974) I quickly adopted a part-siamese kitten. She developed a liking for second-hand pot smoke, and occasionally stole bags with pot in them; she also would nibble at plants people would try to grow, once getting extremely stoned.

After moving out of there, her sublimated hunting instinct got transfered to clothes, primarily socks and underwear. She was once caught pulling them out of someones drawer, open only an inch, and dropping them on the floor, in preparation for a massive heist.

She made strange 'look what I caught' noises before depositing them on my bed.

And you are being rude because...?

I agree that a little fun once in a while is ok. But this was produced by CNN, (which I have stopped watching). Its all bread and circuses as far as I can see.

Well, if you happened to be that guy who had their perfectly good pair of tighty whiteys snatched in the middle of the night, this would certainly be news to you, wouldn't it? :)

Anyhow -- not everything on this site is hardcore political news. It's OK to have a little fun once and a while.

This really ISN'T that funny or cute. That ASPCA has preached for YEARS that cats are INDOOR pets...100% of the time. This woman won't be so glib when Jack is hit by a car, or comes down with feline leukemia, or ingests pesticide, or is shot and killed by an unstable neighbor (exactly what happened to our dog 35 years ago). It never ceases to amaze me that people think that it's perfectly fine for cats to wander the neighborhood, despite all the inherent risks and liabilities to them in doing so. KEEP JACK INSIDE !!

I agree with you about keeping cats indoors. They live longer, are generally healthier, and their lives are not endangered by cars or dogs or angry gardeners or people who just generally hate cats. Also, they don't kill songbirds. Unless you're on a farm out in the country and need cats to contain your rodent population (and even then they should be vaccinated and spayed/neutered), you really aren't doing the right thing by a cat by allowing it to be outside.

It is preferable to keep cats inside, but there are some cats who are simply not going to stay in, no matter what. I have a cat who would try to escape at every opportunity because he just HAD to get out there. I eventually bought a house far enough off the main road, where it would be reasonably safe to let him out. I know all the arguments for keeping him in, but it seems cruel to keep a cat, miserable for years because it's in his nature to go out. there are some cats perfectly suited to an indoor lifestyle and some like mine who would be miserable for their entire extended life. I do make them (I have his brother too, Their mom was a stray. I've had them since they were 6 weeks old. ) come in at night and it seems like a decent balance to him. I realize that there's a trade off, and he may not live as long (He's 11 now) but his shorter life will be happier.

Cats should be kept indoors. Cats are one of the number one reasons we're seeing declines in songbird populations. I know your cat seems miserable couped up in the house all day, but think about how miserable that dead bird is now. Is your cat's enjoyment that much more important than the life of the bird? I know you don't let your cat outside with the intent that it eliminate the local bird population, but now that you know that that's what is slowly happening, I hope you think twice. And as far as you having trouble keeping the cat indoors, I know you're bigger and smarter than the cat. I have faith that you can figure out a way.

I agree. Keep your cats indoors. It's safer. However, if they must go outside, they adapt perfectly well to a leash. When I'm working out in the yard, the kitties are on their leashes. If they want to explore a different area, I just move the stake.

Another animal story in current news:

I'm a cat person...always had cats. None of them ever did anything like this, but Charlie, a stray dog that years ago came into our lives, had a passion for breaking through fences and bringing home presents from neighbors' clotheslines. I had to throw away all the ripped up pantyhose, but the unscathed pullover top he brought me one time was a keeper and I wore it for years.

Obviously a copy-cat theif. There was a similar cat burglar stealing gloves two and a half years ago:
