My company advised all employee's on Monday, that the traditional week long closure would now be December 20 through January 5th. Please use your vacation or go unpaid.

In 35 years of employment, I've never had the week between Christmas and New Year's off, but this year is different. In addition to being shut down from Dec. 23rd to Jan 4th, my place of employment has been sending workers home early on almost a daily basis--or calling them and telling them not to bother to come in for the day.--unpaid, of course. That's on top of shutting down an entire shift and laying off those who weren't needed on a different shift. We're told things look to get worse before they get better, so lots more layoffs are possible. I'm expecting the worst.

Some people are lucky they have vacation days! In the south, the tradition held over from the textile barons' days is to close the plant during July 4 week, no pay; the second week is Christmas week, no pay. You are allowed to apply for unemployment benefits but--the July week is considered the "waiting week" so you only get it for the Christmas week. This practice so widespread that the company is allowed to submit all applications for unemployment automatically.
They give 2 weeks "vacation" except the only week you get paid is the one you get for waiting for your unemployment check in Dec. And there are no bonuses, you dolt!

I work for Adobe and I can tell you that a holiday shutdown here is SOP. We have not been asked to take extra time off.

I work for a small private art school that closes for 3 weeks at the holidays. Not a paid vacation. Last year I filed for unemployment but the state (California) dis-allowed it because I am a teacher.... never mind that I am not part of the teacher's union which in the public shcool system pays teachers for these holidays. I suppose this year when i file i will not use the word "teacher" to describe my occupation. I'll say I am a janitor or something else. Three weeks is a long time to go without a paycheck.
