AMERICAblog: Thursday Convention Night Open Thread

Thank God there have been no security issues at that huge stadium tonight. This was a HUGE undertaking!!! Anything the Republicans do now will look pipsqueak.... weak. Bravo Obama! This has been the best American political convention EVER.

and so it begins. Even through the TV you can feel the electricity...

Don't watch TV with your feet in the tub........

As an electrical engineer I have fully grounded myself against the shock, but it is nice to feel my hair standing up...
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Hey, go for it! Feels good to hear someone say what you wanted said, eh?
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
"We are the party of Roosevelt." It's good to hear that. Very nice.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
"I'm not ready to take a ten percent chance on change." Ha!
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
I like this speech. He's going real specific and hitting McCain dead on. Not a lot of soring rhetoric, just not simple direct attacks. Good tone. It will rile up the troops.

    "Own their failure!" YEah baby!
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Damn right! I think he is winning over a lot of voters tonight.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
I wish I was listening to Kucinich right now. That hobbit can rock! How cool that would be.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Who is that cute, hunky Asian guy sitting behind Michelle Obama? Is he a family member?

Did Jennifer Hudson sing yet? She was supposed to sing the national anthem tonight but I never saw her?

The Republicans are gonna be CREAMED in the debates this year. They may as well surrender now!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I heard Jennifer Hudson singing earlier on NPR and it was GORGEOUS!

Watching on MSNBC right now. Obama is kicking McBush's BUTT!
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Thanks! I found her performance on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pwIZpIviH8

"John McCain says he will follow Obama to the gates of hell but he won't even follow him to his CAVE!"

    zinggggggg!

    No... make that:

    ZINNNNNNNNNGGGGGG!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Oh, he is doing REALLY REALLY GOOD tonight!

By the way, what is UP with all the "Obama needs to do this..." "Obama needs to do that..." "Obama needs to explain this..."

Shit, those same pundits will be gushing when John McBush comes doddering up to the microphone, craps his pants and wanders off.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
"I got news for you, John McCain! We ALL put our country FIRST!"

    BAMMMM!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
"You understand that in this election, the greatest risk we can take is to try the same old politics with the same old players and expect a different result. You have shown what history teaches us – that at defining moments like this one, the change we need doesn't come from Washington. Change comes to Washington. Change happens because the American people demand it – because they rise up and insist on new ideas and new leadership, a new politics for a new time.

AMERICA, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES!"

    Rock on, BROTHER MAN!
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
    finally fighting back, yeehaaaaa
patience and timing is key to counterpunching, looking very very good so far
was all this in the pre-released speech?
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Yes! Finally a candidate who won't sit back and let the Republicans use him as a punching bag!!!!
  • patrick314 · 1 year ago
He's doing everything right that Kerry did wrong. And remember how close THAT race was. Obama should be a shoe-in!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    HE DID IT!
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
    Obama just finished.

    That's OUR Next President!

    :)
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Obama's youngest daughter is SO CUTE! They both are cute, but that little one has a personality that shines like the sun!
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
if he doesn't specifically shout out to troops, riech-wingers will say he doesn't respect them, if he does, they will say he's using them. wait for it...
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
Much more beautiful when you hear it first ;)

What's up with the country song though? I did NOT see this coming!
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
    Who's singing that song?
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
SHOCKER: Its "Brooks and Dunn" they were HUGE Bu$h supporters. I'm pleasantly surprised. I used to like them but began to hate them over their support for Bu$h. Looks like they finally caught the right bus.

By the way, the song ended with a line about "OKLAHOMA!" before going to the Presidential music Woo Hoo!
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
Ok, I'm liking the song..... COOL!
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
I want to get up and dance.!!!!!!!
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
BEST AMERICAN POLITICAL CONVENTION EVER. PERIOD.

You could actually compare tonight to the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

By contrast, I think people will be comparing the Republican convention to those awful days in the New Orleans Superbowl exactly 3 years ago.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
If the Republicans are smart, they will cancel their convention and quietly slink away in the dark at midnight. Maybe even leave McCain tied to a stake in the center of their convention center. He'll be safe in doors and the janitors will quickly find him when they come in to clean up. If they try to follow up the Democratic convention with on of their own ... no, I don't think there are enough Republicans left to try to even fake it.

I called it a dog and pony show and most only went for the free booze and partying all night. Well, it was far from that. The Democrats hit all the salient points again and again. If the Republicans can pull together and stage a convention, more so than ever, we will hear the most foul, vile, evil, hateful rhetoric that will make anything that came before forgotten. It is all that they have left to resort to given that they cannot give any legitimate response to the charges the Semocrats have made about the Republicans and the massive, massive failures and even more massive crimes of the Bush administration.

Then again, besides McCain, they can tie Bush, Cheney, Rove and a few others to other stakes with a note that they are to be surrendered to the Hague for trial for crimes against humanity as well as war crimes.

Invesco Field (dread name!) is the world's biggest, most beautiful jewel box tonight.
  • patrick314 · 1 year ago
Unbelievable speech! He was direct and dynamic. Tonight couldn't have made me happier.

BTW, country song is Brooks & Dunn, "Only in America"
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
    Thank you.

Brooks & Dunn... My my my

Olbermann is really telling it like it is.

    LOVE IT.
  • patrick314 · 1 year ago
Matthews is FIRED UP as well.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Brooks and Dunn did all kinds of concerts for George Dubya Bush... I'm SHOCKED they are allowing their song to go with Obama this time around. Maybe they learned their lesson to not promote Republicans? Maybe the "Dixie Chicks" lesson got through to them?
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Okay, now watch this, and tell me America isn't ready for change? Ready for a President who can SPEAK and represent America and show we don't elect IDIOTS to be our President:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbR_hYzmoUU

McBu$h is just MORE OF THE SAME
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
    McBu$h

That's how we should type John McCain's name ALL THE TIME

    McBu$h

    .
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
WHOA! Asking someone to watch that chimp so soon after watching Obama is like asking people to eat liver after eating cheesecake!
    ;)
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
Chris Mathews is really really pleased.
Chris Mathews said he wrote speeches.....i never wrote a speech that good.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
wtf fireworks? columns? now i'm getting pissed off, this is too damn polished...although fireworks are cool...
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Oh, for GOD'S SAKE, its a convention! Stop with the damned concern trolling.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
For instance, I can just hear Republicans had their NOT been fireworks. "Why NO red, white and blue fireworks??? Doesn't Obama like patriotic fireworks?!!?" Jeesh...

Again, McBu$h will shuffle up to the microphone, crap his pants and wander off shouting at the ceiling and the pundits will gush, "Wow, he was so Presidential!" watch...
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
You cracked me up with that last part!!
  • 2008 · 1 year ago
Yeah, Bush can do everything short of barf on camera from his drinking problems in mid-speech, and the MSM is spellbound, AWED.

That's why I'm weirded out to hear MSM call Obama's acceptance a masterpiece, perfection, etc.

    Wha????
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
    That was great, just great
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Hey, I'm liking Chris Matthews tonight. He really described the speech well just now.

Gotta give credit where its due. I usually can not STAND him.
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
"I'm here to kick butt and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of bubble gum" - Rowdy Roddy Pipper "They Live"

The only thing I can think of to describe the tone of that speech. That wasn't soring rhetoric, that was a smack laydown, lots of raw meat, and it felt damn good to hear.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
There is just NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN, that the Republican convention is going to even remotely come close...

Those shots of the stadium filled to the rafters literally brought me to tears...

God, I've never been prouder than right NOW.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
My God! LOOK at that SEA of PEOPLE! GOD BLESS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND GOD BLESS AMERICA!
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
I just can't keep from saying amazing...I just look at it and I'm awestruck...
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
I wonder how many times in McCain's speech will he tell us that he was a POW for 5 1/2 years.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
He couldn't have fireworks as a POW...
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    Now I'm laughing!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
It will be NOUN... VERB... and I WAS A POW in Viet Nam for 5 1/2 years.*

*and left my crippled wife when I came home, and committed polygamy by filing a wedding license before I divorced her and left my crippled wife, Carol, and kids in the dust.

Hey, has anyone but me heard the reason Cindy McBu$h won't show us her tax records is she has made money war profiteering? I heard it tonight...
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Oh good Lord, Andrea Mitchell is saying "the Democrats around here really didn't get fired up until he started hitting hard"...ok, yeah, sure, whatever...
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
I agree with her. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach at the beginning of the speech, until Obama clearly and in no uncertain terms started hitting McCain directly and hard. We all know Obama can give a speech, the question he needed to answer was how willing hw was to throw down. By the end of the speech the theme to Rocky was going through my head and me and my son were literally yelling at the screen. I hope Obama, Biden, the Clintons, and Kerry all go out and keep that same spirit, be proud to be a Democrat, be proud to stand up and call the GOP on their hypocrisy, show that Democrats have a heart AND are willing to stare down the GOP and fight.

Obama needed to show a little Rocky tonight, he actually put out all 5 movies worth of spirit in a 40 minute speech.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
She is doing some concern trolling tonight and trying to couch it in her bid to be neutral. She just doesn't seem to realize how many of us know she is Mrs. Greenspan and it hurts her credibility with the idea neutrality is impossible. She is Republican, and an Obama Administration will make her husband look bad. There really should be a chyron below her every time she speaks that reads: Andrea Mitchell is MARRIED to Alan Greenspan
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Huh? This is weird. I'm liking Matthews AND Chuck Todd tonight. They are both making some points I can agree with. Todd just said Republicans might not want to follow this kind of convention. He also said the response from McCain camp indicates they are confused and don't know how to respond to Obama's grand slam speech! Ha!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Wow, I was just thinking Obama's throwing punches was just genius! He proved he is a scrappy fighter, AND lets watch McCain respond. Well, he CAN'T respond in an angry way because that will just play right into what Americans worry about. John McCain has a REALLY NASTY temper. CATCH 22! John McCain can't show an angry temperament! That isn't Presidential! Can't trust McCain's finger on the button!!!

We've learned as a party to HIT BACK! Karl Rove is weeping into his pillow right now. I'm fantasizing of one year into the Obama Presidency and police bust into Rove's bathroom to arrest him for treason. He is sitting there on the toilet weeping, "Nooooo! Not Leavenworth! Noooo!"
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Do we have an "OFFICIAL" count as to the number of people there? It had to be close to 80k or 90k....
