AMERICAblog: Thursday Morning Open Thread

Good morning. Bad debate, bad interviewers. Moving on . . . the Nazi pope is in town and attacking the American way of life as destructive to the Catholic way of life. Oh, I see . . . lurid details, please.
  • davespicer · 1 year ago
If the folks at ABC recognize nothing else, money ought to get their attention. I just sent Barack another donation.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Obama did exit with grace and dignity. I think he was taken aback, at the horrible and irrelevant questions at the beginning. Why didn't the two idiotic moderators, ask Hillary about Mark Penn? Why did they relentlessly, attack Obama?
People don't give a rip about a lapel pin, when they are without jobs, and
gas prices are high. This bloody debate was the worst one I have ever watched.
Did Bill call in the favor, and did good ole' George pay up?
Shame on ABC and the two unprofessional moderators.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
ABC must be forced to pay a price for this travesty of a debate.
I really feel Stephie or Gibson must resign or take an extended leave. The dabate executive producer and producer should be questioned and suffer the same resignation/leave formula.
ABC must have no involvement in debates leading up to November.
The failed HRC campaign must be questioned about collusion with Stephie in the guilt by association Ayers faux kerfuffle...

    Anybody else have any suggestions?
  • aarrgghh · 1 year ago
did abc just give the presidency to obama? i would not be surprised to see an unintended backlash over this. obama may have some unlikely folks to thank in november ...
  • sjblevins · 1 year ago
At last a comment in the media that actually corresponds to what I saw last night. Why isn't anyone in the media angrier than they are about HIllary Clinton's wholesale shredding of any substantive debate, of her constant assaults on Obama, of the sheer quantity of the idiciocies she spews out on any given day of the week? Last night was appalling. Her shameless pandering for votes gives democracy a bad name.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Good idea, davespicer, I'll send one too...
Remember folks, big media knows a President Obama will end the free ride enjoyed since mid Reagan.
    What would Frank Reynolds think???
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
Some old RW bitch just complained on CSPAN about correcting her wrong view that Obama is a Muslim. Christalmighty, there are some dumb-ass fucking people in this country.

And, of course, the media is spinning, as usual...
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
PS-The North Carolina debate, if necessary, should happen. Anyone know what lustrous corporate media sink hole of failed ambitions will provide the on-air hosts and production???
  • Ricky · 1 year ago
Charles deWolf Gibson and George Robert Stephanopoulos should be ashamed of themselves for presenting to the American public the most appalling, ignorant Presidential debate I've ever witnessed. They are TOTAL TOOLS and the Disney-ABC Television Group should suffer financial loss for wasting everyone's time with this charade of a debate. Contact their advertisers. Contact their affiliate stations. Boycott their network. Boycott their theme parks and movies. You won't miss anything worth watching if you delete ABC from your TV remote so that you won't even be bothered to accidentally see something of theirs as you channel surf. Shun them like the plague! ABC sucks worse than Monica but you didn't hear that from me. As per the Cokie Roberts rule, it may not be true, but it's out there.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
C-SPIN's a complete waste of time unless your into neutered adult males...
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
That old RW pope hasn't apologized to the victims of pedophile priests, either. One man I saw earlier on NBC was talking about a priest who raped his 5 yr old daughter--he was absolutely livid about that German poser's non-apology and spin...
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
    the Cokie Roberts rule

    Is this the rule?

Roberts shared a rule of thumb about employing words and special terms.
"If you have to look it up," she said, "don't use it.

Obviously no research was conducted prior to last night's latest Disney failure...but, the fax machines were running overtime with winger spin.

Issues Take Back Seat At Debate
Questions about controversial pastors, Bosnia trips, and "bitter" comments trumped focus on Iraq, the economy and health care.

Prezz, I don't listen to CSPIN for the "experts" I listen to try to gauge the ignorance of the masses as well...sometimes there is a bright spot. : ) Better than listening to absolute spin, too.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Aside from developing even more respect for Obama, and loathing Hillary even more (didn't realize that was possible at this point), all I could think of was Peter Jennings. ABC shit on his memory last night.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
    Morning.

Yep...Obama was the only one that left that stage last night with his dignity intact.

He was the only mature adult on the stage.

I just read this in our local news:
In Minnesota, bankruptcies have risen 138.8 percent since April 2006. The national average increase is 96.3 percent....

To put this into context, the increase in bankruptcy filings corresponds to the increase in the number of foreclosures in most districts. States that have been decimated by foreclosures -- California, Florida, Arizona -- rank in the Top 10 for bankruptcy filings.....

You really can't blame ABC too much - they just gave the american public what they want. If they had presented a real debate with real issues, the public wouldn't have watched, much less comprehended, and the sponsors wouldn't be happy. I don't think there are many of us left who have the capacity for reason any more.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Hillary looked horrible to the average person in that debate... like she had a stick up her butt. That turned voters off. She will lose Pennsylvania big-time now.

Tragic that Stephanopoulos sold out at such a young age.
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
Yes, Obama was the adult last night: intelligent, thoughtful, calm and inspiring.

No wonder he's beating the so-called polls. And the media? Don't EVER engage anyone who has had anything to do with the WH, whether s/he worked in it, was a WH presser, or so forth. Get a really neutral (if that's possible) person(s) to moderate these debates. Oh, for the good old days of the League of Women Voters...
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
The gushing pope coverage is repulsive. I got a good laugh out of Blitzer's alleged expert last evening and all the "practicing" Catholics at MSNBC.
The pope is here for one reason...to boost America faltering collection plates. If the church really cared would the national art and cultural patrimony held in trust for long dead parishioners and their living descendents have been sold for condo development?
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Yeah, Joe, but where's your flag pin?
  • grandma · 1 year ago
I agree Older and Wiser....Obama held his cool......I'd like to see how long McCain could hold his temper under that kind of questioning......course we will never see that cuz MoreWar McCain is their boy.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    By the way:

Bill Clinton pardoned two female members of the Weather Underground in his last days in the White House.

Can you say, "Radical Nookie" ?

You really can't blame ABC too much

    Shouldn't your name be TheEasilyManipulatedLiz?
And, speak for yourself hon, "the capasity to reason" is still alive and well in this corner of the Enchanted Forest...
  • TheOriginalLiz · 1 year ago
Prezz - Just saying that if it wasn't going to fly, ABC wouldn't have done it. And I'm glad the capacity for reason is alive and kicking in your neck of the woods, but I've come across way too many people who can't get from point A to point B if it doesn't come with a GOP talking point.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Ah yes, the League of Women Voters. Why aren't they moderating these debates?
The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) could have done a better job with this debate than ABC did.
Hell, even the Daughters of the Confederacy could have done a better job than ABC!!!
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Debates haven't been any good since the networks started banning the newspaper people.

Sure, their owners are Corporate Hacks, but most of the Newspaper Reporters themselves are fairly sharp.

The Network Talking Heads are just rich entertainers, with a vested interest in keeping the repubs in charge so they can keep their tax breaks.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
Rich entertainers is right.....Gibson think $200,000.00 a year is middle class.....they are clueless.
  • scooter in brooklyn · 1 year ago
i was just disappointed that Obama didn't look Gibson in the eye and say "you've got to be kidding. you think this is what the people of pennsylvania and the nation care about?"

it's time to call these stooges out for what they are.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
I'd forgotten that for months now Charlie Gibson has been asserting that $200,000 is a solid middle-class income, blissfully unaware that just 3.4 percent of U.S. households have an income of $200,000 or more. You could be richer than 96 percent of your fellow citizens, but still just folks to Gibson. Obviously that's not on a par with being bad at bowling or anything on the "out of touch" scale......

Democratic traitors to the party's values are everywhere...from the Clintons on down. I'm so sick of the triangulating, rethug-lite types, I could scream.

Obama is the only one who can give anyone hope it will change to a true People's Party. Otherwise, we should form our own. I mean, people like the Clintons, who sent their own daughter to Wall St. where she'll never need a union, just have no idea of how ordinary Americans live. It's obvious Hillary Clinton, when she turned down an organizing job with Saul Alinsky, showed her disdain for us right off the bat. It's always been about her, not what she can do for others. Same with Bill, same with Chelsea.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
OlderAndWiser, I do the same thing but I'm visiting C-SPIN less of late for all the reasons any regular CSPIN viewer of our bent would be familiar.
I can't forget how C-SPIN was presented, in the early 80s, as a prime example of non-governmental, public interest maintenence that, the Reaganauts promised, would flower post telcom deregulation and the emasculation of the FCC.
C-SPIN was always a shell game...presenting spin but rarely explaining it...

I also think Obama should have had a hissy fit over the vapidity and inanity of the debate. He did try to point it out, but I wish he'd yelled and screamed that spending the first 50 minutes of the debate on bullshit was a SIN. He should have called evil what it is: evil.
  • therepguy · 1 year ago
It's a little sad to said this but it's time the for American people to walk away from Hillary, Bill and ABC....
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Charlie Gibson must go to the same country club as George Will. George Will once called the Chevy Chase Lounge a "greasy spoon" - and it is a restaurant in a rich area of DC, with white tablecloths on the tables, a fine wine list, top-notch waiters dressed up very nicely, and a clientele of nothing but wealthy & influential people. Greasy spoon indeed.

The media's behavior also remind me of suburban white attitudes and behaviors common in the 60s to minimize social barrier fluidity...Black people (and even us gay hippies) could never measure up...there was ALWAYS some new noodling hurdle that had to be jumped to atain the promise of freedom for all and we never quite appeared to clear it.
We need Spencer Tracey, Sidney Poitier and Kate Hepburn to re-do "Guess Who's Coming To State Dinner?"
  • kiki · 1 year ago
That wasn't a debate, that was "SABOTAGE" against Obama. 50 minutes of nothing but tabloid garbage that wasn't worth listening to. Give me a break. The debate was ignorant, ridiculous and planned that way. DISGUSTING! If Hillary and her crew thinks last night is going to help her, "SHE IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!"

It might have helped if he had a little more John Edwards in him, and continually but politely kept the debate on topic, but he couldn't be seen losing his cool.

I'm sure part of the reason Hillary was piling on was to try to get Obama to show his temper. Everyone knows she's a screaming banshee, and that's why a lot of people don't like her. He couldn't be seen as similarly unable to control himself.

My first inkling that ABC's "debate" was going to be less than expected was the first commercial break. I thought "What the fuck!?!" A goddammed commercial break at the beginning of the debate?!?

ABC's debate was a fraud. A mirage. A HOAX. An illusion with two right-wing poltergeists masquerading as moderators. Go to the light Charles and George! Spare us all your future ignominies.

I thought Hillary and Barack did alright, considering what they had to work with. No one should have to suffer ABC anymore, especially our Presidential candidates. If I was Hillary or Barack and anyone from ABC called I would instruct my staff hang up and block their phone number.

What debate rule has allowed the on-air inflation of the host role(s) and the ginning of drama.
Aren't debates by their very nature dramatic? Is the public interest served for a huge corporation to expand the dramatic possibilities to the detriment of actual national concerns?
I even hated ABC's silly and ponderous "Constitution" bumpers and their absolutely awful election music...Pregnant Chelsea was my only comic break in the alleged coverage.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
Thanks for the Washington Post link Sage 24:

    from that article:

When Barack Obama met Hillary Clinton for another televised Democratic candidates' debate last night, it was more than a step forward in the 2008 presidential election. It was another step downward for network news -- in particular ABC News, which hosted the debate from Philadelphia and whose usually dependable anchors, Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, turned in shoddy, despicable performances.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Shoddy and despicable performances by Gibson, George indeed.....and I would include Hillary.

As the mud slinging went on during last night's debate, I found myself looking for an American flag pin on Hillary's lapel, one showing her true patriotism. Lo and behold I found none. I wondered why that hasn't been brought to our attention. Then I figured it out. To "attack" Hillary for not wearing a flag lapel pin might be considered gender bashing. She certainly couldn't be expected to wear one on her designer suit, one that would interfere with her fashion statement.

Gally, but Clinton is WHITE! It's already assumed she is patriotic...[snark].

Tom Shales article summed it up nicely, Sage, but no question about whether or not George S. is/was a Clintonite? He should never have been allowed to moderate, more so than Gibson, even. Gibson is an elite, you know and so is GS, now that he's totally sold out.

  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
Come on Mr. Sudbay. Why aren't you making an issue of the fact that Clinton doesn't wear a flag lapel pin. Okay for her to be a traitor but not okay because Obama is automatically a traitor given that he is Black.

This and the "bitter" comment will be repeated and repeated until the November election to try to Swiftboat Obama to defeat him. I can see 2 inch headlines on the front of the New York Times on the day before the election raising these non-issues. There are no real issues/flaws with Obama so you know they have to manufacture them and pretty clear these are what they will use with the repeated lie technique to smear him and try to destroy his effort to be our president. Only way to stop it is if we demonstrate just as loudly for Obama.
